Exact correlation functions in particle-reaction models with immobile particles

Exact results on particle-densities as well as correlators in two models of immobile particles, containing either a single species or else two distinct species, are derived. The models evolve following a descent dynamics through pair-annihilation where each particle interacts at most once throughout its entire history. The resulting large number of stationary states leads to a non-vanishing configurational entropy. Our results are established for arbitrary initial conditions and are derived via a generating-function method. The single-species model is the dual of the 1D zero-temperature kinetic Ising model with Kimball-Deker-Haake dynamics. In this way, both infinite and semi-infinite chains and also the Bethe lattice can be analysed. The relationship with the random sequential adsorption of dimers and weakly tapped granular materials is discussed.

Relaxation at finite temperature in Fully-Frustrated Ising Models

We consider by means of Monte Carlo simulations the relaxation in the paramagnetic phase of the anti-ferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice and of a fully-frustrated Ising model on a square lattice. In contradistinction to previous studies of the second model, we show that spin-spin correlation functions do not decay with a stretched-exponential law at low temperature but that both models display an exponential decay with logarithmic corrections that are interpreted as the signature of topological defects.

Aging and stationary properties of non-equilibrium symmetrical three-state models

We consider a non-equilibrium three-state model whose dynamics is Markovian and displays the same symmetry as the three-state Potts model, i.e., the transition rates are invariant under the permutation of the states. Unlike the Potts model, detailed balance is in general not satisfied. The aging and the stationary properties of the model defined on a square lattice are obtained by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the phase diagram presents a critical line, belonging to the three-state Potts universality class, that ends at a point whose universality class is that of the voter model. Aging is considered on the critical line, at the voter point and in the ferromagnetic phase.

Mesoscopic rings with Spin-Orbit interactions

A didactic description of charge and spin equilibrium currents on mesoscopic rings in the presence of Spin-Orbit interaction is presented. Emphasis is made on the non trivial construction of the correct Hamiltonian in polar coordinates, the calculation of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions and the symmetries of the ground state properties. Spin currents are derived following an intuitive definition and then a more thorough derivation is built upon the canonical Lagrangian formulation that emphasizes the SU(2) gauge structure of the transport problem of spin 1/2 fermions in spin-orbit active media. The quantization conditions that follow from the constraint of single-valued Pauli spinors are also discussed. The targeted students are those of a graduate Condensed Matter Physics course.

Numerical study of Schramm-Loewner Evolution in the random 3-state Potts model

We have numerically studied the properties of the interface induced in the ferromagnetic random-bond three-state Potts model by symmetry-breaking boundary conditions. The fractal dimension $d_f$ of the interface was determined. The corresponding SLE parameter $κ$ was estimated to be $κ\simeq 3.18(6)$, compatible with previous estimate. On the other hand, we estimated $κ$ independently from the probability of passage of the interface at the left of a given point. The numerical data are well reproduced by the Schramm theoretical prediction and the fit leads to $κ\simeq 3.245(10)$, in agreement with the first estimate. This provides evidences that the geometric properties of spin interfaces in the random 3-state Potts model may be described by chordal ${\rm SLE}_κ$.

Symmetry relation for multifractal spectra at random critical points

Random critical points are generically characterized by multifractal properties. In the field of Anderson localization, Mirlin, Fyodorov, Mildenberger and Evers [Phys. Rev. Lett 97, 046803 (2006)] have proposed that the singularity spectrum $f(α)$ of eigenfunctions satisfies the exact symmetry $f(2d-α)=f(α)+d-α$ at any Anderson transition. In the present paper, we analyse the physical origin of this symmetry in relation with the Gallavotti-Cohen fluctuation relations of large deviation functions that are well-known in the field of non-equilibrium dynamics: the multifractal spectrum of the disordered model corresponds to the large deviation function of the rescaling exponent $γ=(α-d)$ along a renormalization trajectory in the effective time $t=\ln L$. We conclude that the symmetry discovered on the specific example of Anderson transitions should actually be satisfied at many other random critical points after an appropriate translation. For many-body random phase transitions, where the critical properties are usually analyzed in terms of the multifractal spectrum $H(a)$ and of the moments exponents X(N) of two-point correlation function [A. Ludwig, Nucl. Phys. B330, 639 (1990)], the symmetry becomes $H(2X(1) -a)= H(a) + a-X(1)$, or equivalently $Δ(N)=Δ(1-N)$ for the anomalous parts $Δ(N) \equiv X(N)-NX(1)$. We present numerical tests in favor of this symmetry for the 2D random $Q-$state Potts model with various $Q$.

Numerical investigation of the aging of the Fully-Frustrated XY model

We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the fully-frustrated XY model. At equilibrium, this model undergoes two phase transitions at two very close temperatures: a Kosterlitz-Thouless topological transition and a second-order phase transition between a paramagnetic phase and a low-temperature phase where the chiralities of the lattice plaquettes are anti-ferromagnetically ordered. We compute by Monte Carlo simulations two-time spin-spin and chirality-chirality autocorrelation and response functions. From the dynamics of the spin waves in the low temperature phase, we extract the temperature-dependent exponent $η$. We provide evidences for logarithmic corrections above the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature and interpret them as a manifestation of free topological defects. Our estimates of the autocorrelation exponent and the fluctuation-dissipation ratio differ from the XY values, while $η(T_{\rm KT})$ lies at the boundary of the error bar. Indications for logarithmic corrections at the second-order critical temperature are presented. However, the coupling between angles and chiralities is still strong and explains why autocorrelation exponent and fluctuation-dissipation ratio are far from the Ising values and seems stable.

Extended Scaling in High Dimensions

We apply and test the recently proposed "extended scaling" scheme in an analysis of the magnetic susceptibility of Ising systems above the upper critical dimension. The data are obtained by Monte Carlo simulations using both the conventional Wolff cluster algorithm and the Prokof'ev-Svistunov worm algorithm. As already observed for other models, extended scaling is shown to extend the high-temperature critical scaling regime over a range of temperatures much wider than that achieved conventionally. It allows for an accurate determination of leading and sub-leading scaling indices, critical temperatures and amplitudes of the confluent corrections.

Logarithmic corrections in the aging of the fully-frustrated Ising model

We study the dynamics of the critical two-dimensional fully-frustrated Ising model by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The dynamical exponent is estimated at equilibrium and is shown to be compatible with the value $z_c=2$. In a second step, the system is prepared in the paramagnetic phase and then quenched at its critical temperature $T_c=0$. Numerical evidences for the existence of logarithmic corrections in the aging regime are presented. These corrections may be related to the topological defects observed in other fully-frustrated models. The autocorrelation exponent is estimated to be $λ=d$ as for the Ising chain quenched at $T_c=0$.

Temperature-extended Jarzynski relation: Application to the numerical calculation of the surface tension

We consider a generalization of the Jarzynski relation to the case where the system interacts with a bath for which the temperature is not kept constant but can vary during the transformation. We suggest to use this relation as a replacement to the thermodynamic perturbation method or the Bennett method for the estimation of the order-order surface tension by Monte Carlo simulations. To demonstrate the feasibility of the method, we present some numerical data for the 3D Ising model.

Probability distributions of the work in the 2D-Ising model

Probability distributions of the magnetic work are computed for the 2D Ising model by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The system is first prepared at equilibrium for three temperatures below, at and above the critical point. A magnetic field is then applied and grown linearly at different rates. Probability distributions of the work are stored and free energy differences computed using the Jarzynski equality. Consistency is checked and the dynamics of the system is analyzed. Free energies and dissipated works are reproduced with simple models. The critical exponent $δ$ is estimated in an usual manner.

Monte Carlo Study of Phase Transitions in the Bond-Diluted 3D 4-State Potts Model

Large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of the bond-diluted three-dimensional 4-state Potts model are performed. The phase diagram and the physical properties at the phase transitions are studied using finite-size scaling techniques. Evidences are given for the existence of a tricritical point dividing the phase diagram into a regime where the transitions remain of first order and a second regime where the transitions are softened to continuous ones by the influence of disorder. In the former regime, the nature of the transition is essentially clarified through an analysis of the energy probability distribution. In the latter regime critical exponents are estimated. Rare and typical events are identified and their role is qualitatively discussed in both regimes.

Random Ising model in three dimensions: theory, experiment and simulation - a difficult coexistence

We discuss different approaches for studying the influence of disorder in the three-dimensional Ising model. From the theoretical point of view, renormalisation group calculations provide quite accurate results. Experiments carried out on crystalline mixtures of compounds lead to measurements as accurate as three digits on the values of critical exponents. Numerically, extensive Monte Carlo simulations then pretend to be of comparable accuracy. Life becomes complicated when details are compared between the three approaches.

On universality in aging ferromagnets

This work is a contribution to the study of universality in out-of-equilibrium lattice models undergoing a second-order phase transition at equilibrium. The experimental protocol that we have chosen is the following: the system is prepared in its high-temperature phase and then quenched at the critical temperature $T_c$. We investigated by mean of Monte Carlo simulations two quantities that are believed to take universal values: the exponent $λ/z$ obtained from the decay of autocorrelation functions and the asymptotic value $X_\infty$ of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio $X(t,s)$. This protocol was applied to the Ising model, the 3-state clock model and the 4-state Potts model on square, triangular and honeycomb lattices and to the Ashkin-Teller model at the point belonging at equilibrium to the 3-state Potts model universality class and to a multispin Ising model and the Baxter-Wu model both belonging to the 4-state Potts model universality class at equilibrium.

Bond dilution in the 3D Ising model: a Monte Carlo study

We study by Monte Carlo simulations the influence of bond dilution on the three-dimensional Ising model. This paradigmatic model in its pure version displays a second-order phase transition with a positive specific heat critical exponent $α$. According to the Harris criterion disorder should hence lead to a new fixed point characterized by new critical exponents. We have determined the phase diagram of the diluted model, between the pure model limit and the percolation threshold. For the estimation of critical exponents, we have first performed a finite-size scaling study, where we concentrated on three different dilutions. We emphasize in this work the great influence of the cross-over phenomena between the pure, disorder and percolation fixed points which lead to effective critical exponents dependent on the concentration. In a second set of simulations, the temperature behaviour of physical quantities has been studied in order to characterize the disorder fixed point more accurately. In particular this allowed us to estimate ratios of some critical amplitudes. In accord with previous observations for other models this provides stronger evidence for the existence of the disorder fixed point since the amplitude ratios are more sensitive to the universality class than the critical exponents. Moreover, the question of non-self-averaging at the disorder fixed point is investigated and compared with recent results for the bond-diluted $q=4$ Potts model. Overall our numerical results provide evidence that, as expected on theoretical grounds, the critical behaviour of the bond-diluted model is governed by the same universality class as the site-diluted model.

A far-from-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relation for an Ising-Glauber-like model

We derive an exact expression of the response function to an infinitesimal magnetic field for an Ising-Glauber-like model with arbitrary exchange couplings. The result is expressed in terms of thermodynamic averages and does not depend on the initial conditions or on the dimension of the space. The response function is related to time-derivatives of a complicated correlation function and so the expression is a generalisation of the equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation theorem in the special case of this model. Correspondence with the Ising-Glauber model is discussed. A discrete-time version of the relation is implemented in Monte Carlo simulations and then used to study the aging regime of the ferromagnetic two-dimensional Ising-Glauber model quenched from the paramagnetic phase to the ferromagnetic one. Our approach has the originality to give direct access to the response function and the fluctuation-dissipation ratio.

Fluctuation-dissipation relation for the Ising-Glauber model with arbitrary exchange couplings

We derive an exact expression of the response function to an infinitesimal magnetic field for the Ising-Glauber model with arbitrary exchange couplings.nThe result is expressed in terms of thermodynamic averages and does not depend on initial conditions or dimension of space. The comparison with the equilibrium case gives some understanding on the way the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is violated out-of-equilibrium.

Phase transitions in two-dimensional random Potts models

The influence of uncorrelated, quenched disorder on the phase transition of two dimensional Potts models will be reviewed. After an introduction where the conditions of relevance of quenched randomness on phase transitions are exemplified by experimental measurements, the results of perturbative and numerical investigations in the case of the Potts model will be presented. The Potts model is of particular interest, since it can have in the pure case a second-order or a first-order transition, depending on the number of states per spin. In 2D, transfer matrix calculations and Monte Carlo simulations were used in order to check the validity of conformal invariance methods in disordered systems. These techniques were then used to investigate the universality class of the disordered Potts model, in both regimes of the pure model phase transitions. A test of replica symmetry became possible through a study of multiscaling properties and a detailed analysis of the probability distribution of the correlation functions was also made possible.
