Analysis of chemical abundances in planetary nebulae with [WC] central stars. I. Line intensities and physical conditions

(Abridged) Planetary nebulae (PNe) around Wolf-Rayet [WR] central stars ([WR]PNe) constitute a particular photoionized nebula class that represents about 10% of the PNe with classified central stars. We analyse deep high-resolution spectrophotometric data of 12 [WR]PNe. This sample represents the most extensive analysed so far, at such high spectral resolution. We aim to select the optimal physical conditions in the PNe to be used in ionic abundance calculations that will be presented in a forthcoming paper. We acquired spectra at LCO with the 6.5-m telescope and the MIKE spectrograph, covering a wavelength range from 3350 to 9400 A. The spectra were exposed deep enough to detect, with signal-to-noise ratio higher than three, the weak ORLs of OII, CII, and other species. We detect and identify about 2980 emission lines, which, to date, is the most complete set of spectrophotometric data published for this type of objects. From our deep data, numerous diagnostic line ratios for Te and Ne are determined from CELs, ORLs, and continuum measurements. Densities are closely described by the average of all determined values for objects with ne<10^4 cm-3, and by ne([Cl III]) for the densest objects. For Te, we adopt a three-zone ionization scheme, where the low ionization zone is characterized by Te([NII]), the medium ionization zone by Te([OIII]) and the highest ionization one by Te([ArIV]) when available. We compute Te from the HI Paschen discontinuity and from HeI lines. We do not find evidences of the presence of low-temperature, high-density clumps in our [WR]PNe from the analysis of faint O II and N II plasma diagnostics. The behaviour of Te([OIII])/Te([NII]) being very low for high ionization degrees can be reproduced by a set of combined matter-bounded and radiation-bounded models, however, for the lowest temperature ratios, too high metallicity seem required.

NGC 6302: high-ionization permitted lines. Applying X-SSN synthesis to VLT-UVES spectra

A preliminary VLT-UVES spectrum of NGC 6302 (Casassus et al. 2002, MN), which hosts one of the hottest PN nuclei known (Teff ~ 220000 K; Wright et al. 2011, MN), has been recently analysed by means of X-SSN, a spectrum synthesis code for nebulae (Morisset and Péquignot). Permitted recombination lines from highly-ionized species are detected/identified for the first time in a PN, and some of them probably for the first time in (Astro)Physics. The need for a homogeneous, high signal-to-noise UVES spectrum for NGC 6302 is advocated.

Abundances and ADFs in PNe with WC central stars

We present preliminary results obtained from the analysis of very deep echelle spectra of a dozen planetary nebulae with [WC] or weak emission lines (wels) central stars. The computed abundance discrepancy factors (ADFs) are moderate, with values lower than 4. In principle, no evidence of the H-poor metal enriched inclusions proposed by Liu et al. (2000) have been found. However, a detailed analysis of the data is in progress.

Ionization of the diffuse gas in galaxies: Hot low-mass evolved stars at work

We revisit the question of the ionization of the diffuse medium in late type galaxies, by studying NGC 891, the prototype of edge-on spiral galaxies. The most important challenge for the models considered so far was the observed increase of [OIII]/Hbeta, [OII]/Hbeta, and [NII]/Halpha with increasing distance to the galactic plane. We propose a scenario based on the expected population of massive OB stars and hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES) in this galaxy to explain this observational fact. In the framework of this scenario we construct a finely meshed grid of photoionization models. For each value of the galactic latitude z we look for the models which simultaneously fit the observed values of the [OIII]/Hbeta, [OII]/Hbeta, and [NII]/Halpha ratios. For each value of z we find a range of solutions which depends on the value of the oxygen abundance. The models which fit the observations indicate a systematic decrease of the electron density with increasing z. They become dominated by the HOLMES with increasing z only when restricting to solar oxygen abundance models, which argues that the metallicity above the galactic plane should be close to solar. They also indicate that N/O increases with increasing z.

Shape: A 3D Modeling Tool for Astrophysics

We present a flexible interactive 3D morpho-kinematical modeling application for astrophysics. Compared to other systems, our application reduces the restrictions on the physical assumptions, data type and amount that is required for a reconstruction of an object's morphology. It is one of the first publicly available tools to apply interactive graphics to astrophysical modeling. The tool allows astrophysicists to provide a-priori knowledge about the object by interactively defining 3D structural elements. By direct comparison of model prediction with observational data, model parameters can then be automatically optimized to fit the observation. The tool has already been successfully used in a number of astrophysical research projects.

The Double-Degenerate Nucleus of the Planetary Nebula TS 01. A Close Binary Evolution Showcase

We present a detailed investigation of SBS1150+599A, a close binary star hosted by the planetary nebula PN G135.9+55.9 (TS01, Stasinska et al, 2009). The nebula, located in the Galactic halo, is the most oxygen-poor one known to date and is the only one known to harbor a double degenerate core. We present XMM-Newton observations of this object, which allowed the detection of the previously invisible component of the binary core, whose existence was inferred so far only from radial velocity and photometric variations. The parameters of the binary system were deduced from a wealth of information via three independent routes using the spectral energy distribution (from the infrared to X-rays), the light and radial velocity curves, and a detailed model atmosphere fitting of the stellar absorption features of the optical/UV component. We find that the cool component must have a mass of 0.54+/-0.2 Msun, an average effective temperature, Teff, of 58000+/-3000 K, a mean radius of 0.43+/-0.3 Rsun, a gravity log g=5.0+/-0.3, and that it nearly fills its Roche lobe. Its surface elemental abundances are found to be: 12 + log He/H = 10.95+/-0.04 dex, 12 + log C/H = 7.20+/-0.3 dex, 12 + log N/H < 6.92 and 12 + log O/H < 6.80, in overall agreement with the chemical composition of the planetary nebula. The hot component has Teff = 160-180 kK, a luminosity of about ~10e4 Lsun and a radius slightly larger than that of a white dwarf. It is probably bloated and heated as a result of intense accretion and nuclear burning on its surface in the past. The total mass of the binary system is very close to Chandrasekhar limit. This makes TS01 one of the best type Ia supernova progenitor candidates. We propose two possible scenarios for the evolution of the system up to its present stage.

The Mexican Million Models Database: a virtual observatory for gaseous nebulae

The 3MdB (Mexican Million Models database) is a large database of photoionization models for H II regions. The number of free parameters for the models is close to 15, including the description of the ionizing Spectral Energy Distribution (effective temperature, luminosity, surface gravity, for different type of stellar atmosphere models) and the description of the ionized gas (distance to the ionizing source, density, abundances of the most common elements, dust). The outputs of the models are more than 70 emission line intensities, the ionic fractions and temperatures. All the parameters and outputs are included in the MySQL database, giving the possibility to the user to search into the database for example for all the models that reproduce a given set of observations.

Expansion parallax of the planetary nebula IC 418

In this paper, we present radio continuum observations of the planetary nebula IC 418 obtained at two epochs separated by more than 20 years. These data allow us to show that the angular expansion rate of the ionization front in IC 418 is 5.8 $\pm$ 1.5 mas yr$^{-1}$. If the expansion velocity of the ionization front is equal to the expansion velocity of the gas along the line of sight as measured by optical spectroscopy, then the distance to IC 418 must be 1.1 $\pm$ 0.3 kpc. Recent theoretical predictions appropriate for the case of IC 418, however, suggest that the ionization front may be expanding about 20% faster than the material. Under this assumption, the distance to IC 418 would increase to 1.3 $\pm$ 0.4 kpc.

Dust and the ultraviolet energy distribution of quasars

The ultraviolet energy distribution of quasars shows a sharp steepening of the continuum shortward of 1000 A (rest-frame). We describe how we came to consider the possibility that this continuum break might be the result of absorption by carbon crystallite dust grains.

The NII spectrum of the Orion Nebula

The predicted emission spectrum of NII is compared with observations of permitted lines in the Orion nebula. Conventional nebular models show that the intensities of the more intense lines can be explained by fluorescence of starlight absorption with a N abundance that is consistent with forbidden lines. Lines excited mostly by recombination on the other hand predict high N abundances. The effects of stellar and nebular parameters and of the atomic data on the predicted intensities are examined.

The ISO Galactic Metallicity Gradient Revisited

Two independent groups (Giveon et al. 2002; Martin-Hernandez et al. 2002) have recently investigated the Galactic metallicity gradient as probed by ISO observations of mid-infrared emission lines from HII regions. We show that the different gradients inferred by the two groups are due to differing source selection and differing extinction corrections. We show that both data sets in fact provide consistent results if identical assumptions are made in the analysis. We present a consistent set of gradients in which we account for extinction and variation in electron temperature across the disk.
