On genus one mirror symmetry in higher dimensions and the BCOV conjectures

The mathematical physicists Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa (BCOV) proposed, in a seminal article from '94, a conjecture extending genus zero mirror symmetry to higher genera. With a view towards a refined formulation of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem, we offer a mathematical description of the BCOV conjecture at genus one. As an application of the arithmetic Riemann-Roch theorem of Gillet-Soulé and of our previous results on the BCOV invariant, we establish this conjecture for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in projective spaces. Our contribution takes place on the $B$-side, and together with the work of Zinger on the $A$-side, it provides the first complete examples of the mirror symmetry program in higher dimensions. The case of quintic threefolds was studied by Fang-Lu-Yoshikawa. Our approach also lends itself to arithmetic considerations of the BCOV invariant, and we study a Chowla-Selberg type theorem expressing it in terms of special $Γ$ values for certain Calabi-Yau manifolds with complex multiplication.

BCOV invariants of Calabi--Yau manifolds and degenerations of Hodge structures

Calabi--Yau manifolds have risen to prominence in algebraic geometry, in part because of mirror symmetry and enumerative geometry. After Bershadsky--Cecotti--Ooguri--Vafa (BCOV), it is expected that genus 1 curve counting on a Calabi--Yau manifold is related to a conjectured invariant, only depending on the complex structure of the mirror, and built from Ray--Singer holomorphic analytic torsions. To this end, extending work of Fang--Lu--Yoshikawa in dimension 3, we introduce and study the BCOV invariant of Calabi--Yau manifolds of arbitrary dimension. To determine it, knowledge of its behaviour at the boundary of moduli spaces is imperative. We address this problem by proving precise asymptotics along one-parameter degenerations, in terms of topological data and intersection theory. Central to the approach are new results on degenerations of $L^2$ metrics on Hodge bundles, combined with information on the singularities of Quillen metrics in our previous work.

Singularities of metrics on Hodge bundles and their topological invariants

We consider degenerations of complex projective Calabi--Yau varieties and study the singularities of $L^2$, Quillen and BCOV metrics on Hodge and determinant bundles. The dominant and subdominant terms in the expansions of the metrics close to non-smooth fibers are shown to be related to well-known topological invariants of singularities, such as limit Hodge structures, vanishing cycles and log-canonical thresholds. We also describe corresponding invariants for more general degenerating families in the case of the Quillen metric.

Stability of the tangent bundle of G/P in positive characteristics

Let $G$ be an almost simple simply-connected affine algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p > 0$. If $G$ has type $B_n$, $C_n$ or $F_4$, we assume that $p > 2$, and if $G$ has type $G_2$, we assume that $p > 3$. Let $P \subset G$ be a parabolic subgroup. We prove that the tangent bundle of $G/P$ is Frobenius stable with respect to the anticanonical polarization on $G/P$.

Hessian of the natural Hermitian form on twistor spaces

We compute the hessian of the natural Hermitian form successively on the Calabi family of a hyperkähler manifold, on the twistor space of a 4-dimensional anti-self-dual Riemannian manifold and on the twistor space of a quaternionic Kähler manifold. We show a strong convexity property of the cycle space of twistor lines on the Calabi family of a hyperkähler manifold. We also prove convexity properties of the 1-cycle space of the twistor space of a 4-dimensional anti-self-dual Einstein manifold of non-positive scalar curvature and of the 1-cycle space of the twistor space of a quaternionic Kähler manifold of non-positive scalar curvature. We check that no non-Kähler strong KT manifold occurs as such a twistor space.

Hodge metrics and the curvature of higher direct images

Using the harmonic theory developed by Takegoshi for representation of relative cohomology and the framework of computation of curvature of direct images bundles by Berndtsson, we prove that the higher direct images by a smooth morphism of the relative canonical bundle twisted by a semi-positive vector bundle are locally free and semi-positively curved, when endowed with a suitable Hodge type metric.

Extension of twisted Hodge metrics for Kähler morphisms

Let f : X --> Y be a holomorphic map of complex manifolds, which is proper, Kahler, and surjective with connected fibers, and which is smooth over Y-Z the complement of an analytic subset Z. Let E be a Nakano semi-positive vector bundle on X, and consider direct image sheaves F = R^qf_*(K_{X/Y} \otimes E) for q \geq 0. In our previous paper, we discussed the Nakano semi-positivity of F with respect to the so-called Hodge metric, when the map f is smooth. In this paper, we discuss the extension of the induced metric on the tautological line bundle O(1) on the projective space bundle P(F) ``over Y-Z'' as a singular Hermitian metric with semi-positive curvature ``over Y''. As a particular consequence, if Y is projective, R^qf_*(K_{X/Y} \otimes E) is weakly positive over Y-Z in the sense of Viehweg.

Exponential localization of Wannier functions in insulators

The exponential localization of Wannier functions in two or three dimensions is proven for all insulators that display time-reversal symmetry, settling a long-standing conjecture. Our proof relies on the equivalence between the existence of analytic quasi-Bloch functions and the nullity of the Chern numbers (or of the Hall current) for the system under consideration. The same equivalence implies that Chern insulators cannot display exponentially localized Wannier functions. An explicit condition for the reality of the Wannier functions is identified.

Hodge metrics and positivity of direct images

Building on Fujita-Griffiths method of computing metrics on Hodge bundles, we show that the direct image of an adjoint semi-ample line bundle by a projective submersion has a continuous metric with Griffiths semi-positive curvature. This shows that for every holomorphic semi-ample vector bundle $E$ on a complex manifold, and every positive integer $k$, the vector bundle $S^kE\otimes\det E$ has a continuous metric with Griffiths semi-positive curvature. If $E$ is ample on a projective manifold, the metric can be made smooth and Griffiths positive.

Analytic torsion of Hirzebruch surfaces

Using different forms of the arithmetic Riemann-Roch theorem and the computations of Bott-Chern secondary classes, we compute the analytic torsion and the height of Hirzebruch surfaces.

Computations of Bott-Chern classes on P(E)

We compute the Bott-Chern classes of the metric Euler sequence describing the relative tangent bundle of the variety P(E) of hyperplans of a holomorphic hermitian vector bundle (E,h) on a complex manifold. We give applications to the construction of the arithmetic characteristic classes of an arithmetic vector bundle and to the computation of the height of P(E) with respect to the tautological quotient bundle O_E(1).

Interpolation in non-positively curved Kähler manifolds

We extend to any simply connected Kähler manifold with non-positive sectional curvature some conditions for interpolation in $\mathbb{C}$ and in the unit disk given by Berndtsson, Ortega-Cerdà and Seip. The main tool is a comparison theorem for the Hessian in Kähler geometry due to Greene, Wu and Siu, Yau.

Nakano positivity and the L2-metric on the direct image of an adjoint positive line bundle

We prove that the $L^2$ metric on the direct image of an adjoint positive line bundle by a locally trivial submersion between projective manifolds is Nakano positive, under the assumption that the typical fiber has zero first Betti number. As a consequence, we get that the symmetric powers of an ample vector bundle tensorized by its determinant are Nakano positive, in particular Griffiths positive. This in turn gives vanishing theorems and an analytic characterization of ample vector bundles.
