Total progeny for spectrally negative branching L{\'e}vy processes with absorption

We consider a spectrally negative branching L{\'e}vy process in which particles are killed upon crossing below zero. It is known that such a process becomes extinct almost surely if the drift toward -$\infty$ is sufficiently strong to counterbalance the reproduction rate. In this note, we study the tail asymptotics of the number of particles absorbed at the boundary during the lifetime of the process, in both the subcritical and critical regimes.

On the maximal displacement of some critical branching L{\'e}vy processes with stable offspring distribution

Let X be a critical branching L{\'e}vy process whose offspring distribution is in the domain of attraction of a stable random variable. We study the tail probability of the maximum location ever reached by a particle in two different situations: first when the underlying L{\'e}vy process L admits moments of order at least two and is not centered, and then when the distribution of L has a regularly varying tail. This work complements some earlier results in which either L was centered or the offspring distribution was assumed to have moments of order three.

A pursuit problem for squared Bessel processes

In this note, we are interested in the probability that two independent squared Bessel processes do not cross for a long time. We show that this probability has a power decay which is given by the first zero of some hypergeometric function. We also compute along the way the distribution of the location where the crossing eventually occurs.

Persistence exponents via perturbation theory: MA(1)-processes

For the moving average process $X_n=\rho \xi_{n-1}+\xi_n$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, where $\rho\in\mathbb{R}$ and $(\xi_i)_{i\ge -1}$ is an i.i.d. sequence of normally distributed random variables, we study the persistence probabilities $\mathbb{P}(X_0\ge 0,\dots, X_N\ge 0)$, for $N\to\infty$. We exploit that the exponential decay rate $\lambda_\rho$ of that quantity, called the persistence exponent, is given by the leading eigenvalue of a concrete integral operator. This makes it possible to study the problem with purely functional analytic methods. In particular, using methods from perturbation theory, we show that the persistence exponent $\lambda_\rho$ can be expressed as a power series in $\rho$. Finally, we consider the persistence problem for the Slepian process, transform it into the moving average setup, and show that our perturbation results are applicable.

Maximal displacement of spectrally negative branching L\'evy processes

We consider a branching Markov process in continuous time in which the particles evolve independently as spectrally negative L\'evy processes. When the branching mechanism is critical or subcritical, the process will eventually die and we may define its overall maximum, i.e. the maximum location ever reached by a particule. The purpose of this paper is to give asymptotic estimates for the survival function of this maximum. In particular, we show that in the critical case the asymptotics is polynomial when the underlying L\'evy process oscillates or drifts towards $+\infty$, and is exponential when it drifts towards $-\infty$.

Parisian times for linear diffusions

We compute the joint distribution of the first times a linear diffusion makes an excursion longer than some given duration above (resp. below) some fixed level. In the literature, such stopping times have been introduced and studied in the framework of \emph{Parisian} barrier options, mainly in the case of Brownian motion with drift. We also exhibit several independence properties, and provide some formulae for the associated ruin probabilities.

The area under a spectrally positive stable excursion and other related processes

We study the distribution of the area under the normalized excursion of a spectrally positive stable L{\'e}vy process L, as well as the area under its meander, and under L conditioned to stay positive. Our results involve a special case of Wright's function, which may be seen as a generalization of the classic Airy function appearing in similar Brownian's areas.

Persistence and exit times for some additive functionals of skew Bessel processes

Let X be some homogeneous additive functional of a skew Bessel process Y. In this note, we compute the asymptotics of the first passage time of X to some fixed level b, and study the position of Y when X exits a bounded interval [a, b]. As a by-product, we obtain the probability that X reaches the level b before the level a. Our results extend some previous works on additive functionals of Brownian motion by Isozaki and Kotani for the persistence problem, and by Lachal for the exit time problem.

Cram\'er's estimate for stable processes with power drift

We investigate the upper tail probabilities of the all-time maximum of a stable L\'evy process with a power negative drift. The asymptotic behaviour is shown to be exponential in the spectrally negative case and polynomial otherwise, with explicit exponents and constants. Analogous results are obtained, at a less precise level, for the fractionally integrated stable L\'evy process. We also study the lower tail probabilities of the integrated stable L\'evy process in the presence of a power positive drift.

On the supremum of products of symmetric stable processes

We study the asymptotics, for small and large values, of the supremum of a product of symmetric stable processes. We show in particular that the persistence exponent remains the same as for only one process, up to some logarithmic terms.

Piecewise Constant Martingales and Lazy Clocks

This paper discusses the possibility to find and construct \textit{piecewise constant martingales}, that is, martingales with piecewise constant sample paths evolving in a connected subset of $\mathbb{R}$. After a brief review of standard possible techniques, we propose a construction based on the sampling of latent martingales $\tilde{Z}$ with \textit{lazy clocks} $\theta$. These $\theta$ are time-change processes staying in arrears of the true time but that can synchronize at random times to the real clock. This specific choice makes the resulting time-changed process $Z_t=\tilde{Z}_{\theta_t}$ a martingale (called a \textit{lazy martingale}) without any assumptions on $\tilde{Z}$, and in most cases, the lazy clock $\theta$ is adapted to the filtration of the lazy martingale $Z$. This would not be the case if the stochastic clock $\theta$ could be ahead of the real clock, as typically the case using standard time-change processes. The proposed approach yields an easy way to construct analytically tractable lazy martingales evolving on (intervals of) $\mathbb{R}$.

A stochastic approach to colloidal particle collision/agglomeration

Colloidal particles that experience perfectly elastic collisions can be modelled using Langevin processes with specular reflection conditions. The article presents a discretisation scheme and offers a conjecture for the rate of convergence of the bias produced. Numerically, these conjectures are confirmed for the specular reflection scheme but also for the absorption scheme, which models perfect agglomeration.

Local time penalizations with various clocks for one-dimensional diffusions

We study some limit theorems for the law of a generalized one-dimensional diffusion weighted and normalized by a non-negative function of the local time evaluated at a parametrized family of random times (which we will call a clock). As the clock tends to infinity, we show that the initial process converges towards a new penalized process, which generally depends on the chosen clock. However, unlike with deterministic clocks, no specific assumptions are needed on the resolvent of the diffusion. We then give a path interpretation of these penalized processes via some universal $ \sigma $-finite measures.

On the harmonic measure of stable processes

Using three hypergeometric identities, we evaluate the harmonic measure of a finite interval and of its complementary for a strictly stable real L{\'e}vy process. This gives a simple and unified proof of several results in the literature, old and recent. We also provide a full description of the corresponding Green functions. As a by-product, we compute the hitting probabilities of points and describe the non-negative harmonic functions for the stable process killed outside a finite interval.

Windings of the stable Kolmogorov process

We investigate the windings around the origin of the two-dimensional Markov process (X,L) having the stable Lévy process L and its primitive X as coordinates, in the non-trivial case when |L| is not a subordinator. First, we show that these windings have an almost sure limit velocity, extending McKean's result [McK63] in the Brownian case. Second, we evaluate precisely the upper tails of the distribution of the half-winding times, connecting the results of our recent papers [CP14, PS14].

Persistence of integrated stable processes

We compute the persistence exponent of the integral of a stable Lévy process in terms of its self-similarity and positivity parameters. This solves a problem raised by Z. Shi (2003). Along the way, we investigate the law of the stable process L evaluated at the first time its integral X hits zero, when the bivariate process (X,L) starts from a coordinate axis. This extends classical formulae by McKean (1963) and Gor'kov (1975) for integrated Brownian motion.
