Dynamics influencing ordering of a s=3 Ising antiferromagnetic on a triangular lattice

Antiferromagnetically coupled Ising s =3 spins on a triangular lattice are very close to ordering at zero temperature. The low temperature behaviour of a triangular lattice with Ising spins s =3 has been simulated by using both Glauber and Kawasaki dynamics. The formation of misfit clusters, which are essential for destabilizing the ordered state, are inhibited by the use of Kawasaki dynamics. The sublattice susceptibilities and the sublattice order parameter are found to depend qualitatively on the dynamics used so that robust ordering occurs when Kawasaki dynamics are employed. The thermal behaviour that is found for the spin model with Kawasaki dynamics gives insight into the observed ordering of side chains seen in a tetraphilic liquid crystal.

Monte Carlo study of the ordering in a strongly frustrated liquid crystal

We have performed Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the temperature dependence of the ordering of the side chains of the X-shape liquid crystal molecules which are arranged in a hexagonal array. Each hexagon contains six side chains, one from each side of the hexagon. Each liquid crystal molecule has two, dissimilar, side chains, one that contains silicon and one containing fluorine. Like chains attract each other more strongly than unlike chains and this drives an order-disorder transition. The system is frustrated because it is not possible to find a configuration in which all the hexagons are occupied by either all silicon or all fluorine chains. There are two phase transitions. If only pairwise interactions are included it is found that there is a novel fluctuating phase between the disordered phase and the fully ordered ground state. This did not agree with the experiments where an intermediate phase was seen that had long range order on one of the three sublattices. Agreement was found when the calculations were modified to include attractive three body interactions between the silicon chains.

On-chip interference of single photons from an embedded quantum dot and an external laser

In this work, we demonstrate the on-chip two-photon interference between single photons emitted by a single self-assembled InGaAs quantum dot and an external laser. The quantum dot is embedded within one arm of an air-clad directional coupler which acts as a beam-splitter for incoming light. Photons originating from an attenuated external laser are coupled to the second arm of the beam-splitter and then combined with the quantum dot photons, giving rise to two-photon quantum interference between dissimilar sources. We verify the occurrence of on-chip Hong-Ou-Mandel interference by cross-correlating the optical signal from the separate output ports of the directional coupler. This experimental approach allows us to use classical light source (laser) to assess in a single step the overall device performance in the quantum regime and probe quantum dot photon indistinguishability on application realistic time scales.

Monte Carlo simulations for Ising spins with spin greater than 1/2 applied to the square and triangular lattices with antiferromagnetic interactions and comparing results using Kawasaki and Glauber dynamics

This paper has a pedagogical introduction. We describe the correct method for performing Monte Carlo simulations of Ising model systems with spin greater than one half. Correct and incorrect procedures are clearly outlined and the consequences of using the incorrect procedure are shown. The difference between Kawasaki and Glauber dynamics is then outlined and both methods are applied to the antiferromagnetic square and triangular lattices for S =1.
