Strichartz estimates for the wave equation on manifolds with boundary

We prove certain mixed-norm Strichartz estimates on manifolds with boundary. Using them we are able to prove new results for the critical and subcritical wave equation in 4-dimensions with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. We obtain global existence in the subcricital case, as well as global existence for the critical equation with small data. We also can use our Strichartz estimates to prove scattering results for the critical wave equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions in 3-dimensions.

Global existence of null-form wave equations in exterior domains

We provide a proof of global existence of solutions to quasilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition in certain exterior domains. In particular, our proof does not require estimation of the fundamental solution for the free wave equation. We instead rely upon a class of Keel-Smith-Sogge estimates for the perturbed wave equation. Using this, a notable simplification is made as compared to previous works concerning wave equations in exterior domains: one no longer needs to distinguish the scaling vector field from the other admissible vector fields.

On the $L^p$ norm of spectral clusters for compact manifolds with boundary

We use microlocal and paradifferential techniques to obtain $L^8$ norm bounds for spectral clusters associated to elliptic second order operators on two-dimensional manifolds with boundary. The result leads to optimal $L^q$ bounds, in the range $2\le q\le\infty$, for $L^2$-normalized spectral clusters on bounded domains in the plane and, more generally, for two-dimensional compact manifolds with boundary. We also establish new sharp $L^q$ estimates in higher dimensions for a range of exponents $\bar{q}_n\le q\le \infty$.

Nonlinear hyperbolic equations in infinite homogeneous waveguides

In this paper we prove global and almost global existence theorems for nonlinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities in infinite homogeneous waveguides. We can handle both the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions and Neumann boundary conditions. In the case of Neumann boundary conditions we need to assume a natural nonlinear Neumann condition on the quasilinear terms. The results that we obtain are sharp in terms of the assumptions on the dimensions for the global existence results and in terms of the lifespan for the almost global results. For nonlinear wave equations, in the case where the infinite part of the waveguide has spatial dimension three, the hypotheses in the theorem concern whether or not the Laplacian for the compact base of the waveguide has a zero mode or not.

Global existence for Dirichlet-wave equations with quadratic nonlinearties in high dimensions

We prove global existence of solutions to quasilinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities exterior to nontrapping obstacles in spatial dimensions four and higher. This generalizes a result of Shibata and Tsutsumi in spatial dimensions greater than or equal to six. The technique of proof would allow for more complicated geometries provided that an appropriate local energy decay exists for the associated linear wave equation.

Global existence of solutions to multiple speed systems of quasilinear wave equations in exterior domains

In this paper we prove global existence for certain multispeed Dirichlet-wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities outside of obstacles. We assume the natural null condition for systems of quasilinear wave equations with multiple speeds. The null condition only puts restrictions on the self-interactions of each wave family. We use the method of commuting vector fields and weighted space-time $L^2$ estimates.

Global existence of quasilinear, nonrelativistic wave equations satisfying the null condition

We prove global existence of solutions to multiple speed, Dirichlet-wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities satisfying the null condition in the exterior of compact obstacles. This extends the result of our previous paper by allowing general higher order terms. In the currect setting, these terms are much more difficult to handle than for the free wave equation, and we do so using an analog of a pointwise estimate due to Kubota and Yokoyama.

Hyperbolic trapped rays and global existence of quasilinear wave equations

We prove global existence for quasilinear wave equations outside of a wide class of obstacles. The obstacles may contain trapped hyperbolic rays as long as there is local exponential energy decay for the associated linear wave equation. Thus, we can handle all non-trapping obstacles. We are also able to handle non-diagonal systems satisfying the appropriate null condition.

Global existence for nonlinear wave equations with multiple speeds

We shall be concerned with the Cauchy problem for quasilinear systems in three space dimensions of the form \label{i.1} \partial^2_tu^I-c^2_IΔu^I = C^{IJK}_{abc}\partial_c u^J\partial_a\partial_b u^K + B^{IJK}_{ab}\partial_a u^J\partial_b u^K, \quad I=1,..., D. Here we are using the convention of summing repeated indices, and $\partial u$ denotes the space-time gradient, $\partial u=(\partial_0 u, \partial_1 u, \partial_2 u, \partial_3u)$, with $\partial_0=\partial_t$, and $\partial_j=\partial_{x_j}$, $j=1,2,3$. We shall be in the nonrelativistic case where we assume that the wave speeds $c_k$ are all positive but not necessarily equal. Using a new pointwise estimate of the M. Keel, H. Smith and the author we shall prove global existence of small amplitude solutions for such equations satisfying a null condition. This generalizes the earlier result of Christodoulou and Klainerman where all the wave speeds are the same. Our approach is related to that of Klainerman; however, since we are in the non-relativistic case we cannot use the Lorentz boost vector fields or the Morawetz vector fields. Instead we exploit both the 1/t decay of linear solutions as well as the much easier to prove 1/|x| decay.

Eigenfunction and Bochner Riesz estimates on manifolds with boundary

The purpose of this paper is to give a simple proof of sharp $L^\infty$ estimates for the eigenfunctions of the Dirichlet Laplacian on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ of dimension $n\ge 2$ with boundary $\partial M$ and then to use these estimates to prove new estimates for Bochner Riesz means in this setting. Our eigenfunction estimates involve estimating the $L^2\to L^\infty$ mapping properties of the operators $χ_λ$ which project onto unit bands of the spectrum of the square root of the Laplacian. These generalize the recent estimates of D. Grieser for individual eigenfunctions. We use an idea of Grieser of estimating away from the boundary using earlier estimates of Seeley, Pham The Lai, and Hörmander, and then proving estimates near the boundary using a maximum principle. Our proof of the Bochner Riesz estimates is related to an argument for the Euclidean case of C. Fefferman, and one for the boundaryless Riemannian case that is due to the author. Here, unlike in the boundaryless Riemannian case we cannot use parametrices for the wave equation, and instead lie on a more economical argument that only uses the eigenfunction estimates and the finite propagation speed of the wave equation.

Almost global existence for some semilinear wave equations

We prove almost global existence for semilinear wave equations outside of nontrapping obstacles. We use the vector field method, but only use the generators of translations and Euclidean rotations. Our method exploits 1/r decay of wave equations, as opposed to the much harder to prove 1/t decay.

Riemannian manifolds with maximal eigenfunction growth

On any compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ of dimension $n$, the $L^2$-normalized eigenfunctions $\{ϕ_λ\}$ satisfy $||ϕ_λ||_{\infty} \leq C λ^{\frac{n-1}{2}}$ where $-Δϕ_λ = λ^2 ϕ_λ.$ The bound is sharp in the class of all $(M, g)$ since it is obtained by zonal spherical harmonics on the standard $n$-sphere $S^n$. But of course, it is not sharp for many Riemannian manifolds, e.g. flat tori $\R^n/Γ$. We say that $S^n$, but not $\R^n/Γ$, is a Riemannian manifold with maximal eigenfunction growth. The problem which motivates this paper is to determine the $(M, g)$ with maximal eigenfunction growth. Our main result is that such an $(M, g)$ must have a point $x$ where the set ${\mathcal L}_x$ of geodesic loops at $x$ has positive measure in $S^*_x M$. We show that if $(M, g)$ is real analytic, this puts topological restrictions on $M$, e.g. only $M = S^2$ (topologically) in dimension 2 can possess a real analytic metric of maximal eigenfunction growth. We further show that generic metrics on any $M$ fail to have maximal eigenfunction growth. In addition, we construct an example of $(M, g)$ for which ${\mathcal L}_x$ has positive measure for an open set of $x$ but which does not have maximal eigenfunction growth, thus disproving a naive converse to the main result.
