Interval exchanges that do not embed in free groups

A disjoint rotation map is an interval exchange transformation (IET) on the unit interval that acts by rotation on a finite number of invariant subintervals. It is currently unknown whether the group E of all IETs possesses any non-abelian free subgroups. It is shown that it is not possible for a disjoint rotation map to occur in a subgroup of E that is isomorphic to a non-abelian free group.

Continuous Interval Exchange Actions

Let E denote the group of all interval exchange transformations on [0,1). Given a suitable topological group structure on E, it is possible to classify all one-parameter interval exchange actions (continuous homomorphisms from R to E). In particular, up to conjugacy in E, any one-parameter interval exchange action factors through a rotational torus action.

Discontinuity growth of interval exchange maps

For an interval exchange map, the number of discontinuities of its iterates either exhibits linear growth or is bounded. This dichotomy is used to prove that the group of interval exchanges does not contain distortion elements, giving examples of groups that do not act faithfully via interval exchanges. As a further application of this dichotomy, a classification of centralizers in the group of interval exchanges is given. This classification of centralizers is used to compute the automorphism group of the interval exchange group.
