A High-Flux Source of Cold Strontium with a Loading Rate of $4 \times 10^{10}$ atoms/s for Open Release

We present a high-flux source of cold strontium atoms based on a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap (2D MOT) and a Zeeman slower. We use the source to load a 3D MOT in a separate science chamber, observing a loading rate of $4 \times 10^{10}$ atoms/s -- to our knowledge, the highest reported loading flux for strontium. To characterise the vacuum pressure in the science chamber, we load the atoms into a magnetic trap and measure a lifetime of between 8 and 24 seconds, depending on oven temperature. Finally, we characterise the atom flux and velocity distributions from the oven and from the 2D MOT source, finding reasonable agreement with models in the free molecular flow regime. Our results show it is possible to readily produce a cold strontium flux at comparable levels to alkali species, at oven temperatures compatible with long-term operation, and at vacuum pressures suitable for state-of-the-art quantum experiments. We make our design available at no cost, to benefit researchers in the quantum community.

Schr\"{o}dinger cat states of a macroscopic charged particle co-trapped with an ion

We investigate the feasibility of observing matter-wave interference of a micron-sized charged particle by putting it into a quantum superposition of states with a distinguishable separation. In the proposed method, an atomic ion is confined in a linear Paul trap along with the massive charged particle so that we can make use of the extensive toolbox of experimental techniques developed to control quantum states of trapped ions, and to manipulate their motions with high fidelity operations. This approach provides a stringent test of the predictions of dynamical reduction models of delocalised quantum superpositions of a particle, reaching macroscopicities of up to $\mathcal{M}=17$.

Co-trapping different species in ion traps using multiple radio-frequencies

We consider the stability of systems subjected to periodic parametric driving such that their equations of motion are ordinary differential equations with periodic coefficients and carry out a detailed analysis of important aspects of such systems in the context of the confinement of ions by oscillating electric fields. We show how they can be understood in terms of a pseudopotential approximation and resonances arising from the parametric excitation and investigate the properties of a novel linear Paul trap configuration operating with two radio-frequencies to simultaneously confine two species with extremely different charge-to-mass ratios. The theoretical calculations have been verified by molecular dynamics simulations and normal modes analysis.

Precise shaping of laser light by an acousto-optic deflector

We present a laser beam shaping method using acousto-optic deflection of light and discuss its application to dipole trapping of ultracold atoms. By driving the acousto-optic deflector with multiple frequencies, we generate an array of overlapping diffraction-limited beams that combine to form an arbitrary-shaped smooth and continuous trapping potential. Confinement of atoms in a flat-bottomed potential formed by a laser beam with uniform intensity over its central region confers numerous advantages over the harmonic confinement intrinsic to Gaussian beam dipole traps and many other trapping schemes. We demonstrate the versatility of this beam shaping method by generating potentials with large flat-topped regions as well as intensity patterns compensating for residual external potentials to create a uniform background to which the trapping potential of experimental interest can be added.

Enhancement of On-Site Interactions of Tunnelling Ultracold Atoms in Optical Potentials using Radio-Frequency Dressing

We show how it is possible to more than double the on-site interaction energy of neutral atoms in optical potentials by the technique of radio-frequency (rf) dressing, while maintaining interwell dynamics. We calculate Bose-Hubbard parameters for rf dressed optical lattices and arrays of rf dressed dipole traps. We show that decreasing the distance between wells, by the interpolation of wells confining different m_F states, increases the interaction energy more than decreasing the height of the classically forbidden region between existing wells. The schemes we propose have negligible Landau-Zener losses caused by atomic motion; this was a dominant effect in the first experimental demonstration of the modification of an optical potential by radio-frequency dressing.

Temperature Dependence of Damping and Frequency Shifts of the Scissors Mode of a trapped Bose-Einstein Condensate

We have studied the properties of the scissors mode of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{87}$Rb atoms at finite temperature. We measured a significant shift in the frequency of the mode below the hydrodynamic limit and a strong dependence of the damping rate as the temperature increased. We compared our damping rate results to recent theoretical calculations for other observed collective modes finding a fair agreement. From the frequency measurements we deduce the moment of inertia of the gas and show that it is quenched below the transition point, because of the superfluid nature of the condensed gas.
