O-minimality on twisted universal torsors and Manin's conjecture over number fields

Manin's conjecture predicts the distribution of rational points on Fano varieties. Using explicit parameterizations of rational points by integral points on universal torsors and lattice-point-counting techniques, it was proved for several specific varieties over $\mathbb{Q}$, in particular del Pezzo surfaces. We show how this method can be implemented over arbitrary number fields $K$, by proving Manin's conjecture for a singular quartic del Pezzo surface of type $\mathbf{A}_3+\mathbf{A}_1$. The parameterization step is treated in high generality with the help of twisted integral models of universal torsors. To make the counting step feasible over arbitrary number fields, we deviate from the usual approach over $\mathbb{Q}$ by placing higher emphasis on the geometry of numbers in the framework of o-minimal structures.

Schanuel's theorem for heights defined via extension fields

Let $k$ be a number field, let $θ$ be a nonzero algebraic number, and let $H(\cdot)$ be the Weil height on the algebraic numbers. In response to a question by T. Loher and D. W. Masser, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of $α\in k$ with $H(αθ)\leq X$. We also prove an asymptotic counting result for a new class of height functions defined via extension fields of $k$. This provides a conceptual framework for Loher and Masser's problem and generalizations thereof. Moreover, we analyze the leading constant in our asymptotic formula for Loher and Masser's problem. In particular, we prove a sharp upper bound in terms of the classical Schanuel constant.

Sums of units in function fields

Let R be the ring of S-integers of an algebraic function field (in one variable) over a perfect field, where S is finite and not empty. It is shown that for every positive integer N there exist elements of R that can not be written as a sum of at most N units.

Sums of units in function fields II - The extension problem

In 2007, Jarden and Narkiewicz raised the following question: Is it true that each algebraic number field has a finite extension L such that the ring of integers of L is generated by its units (as a ring)? In this article, we answer the analogous question in the function field case. More precisely, it is shown that for every finite non-empty set S of places of an algebraic function field F | K over a perfect field K, there exists a finite extension F' | F, such that the integral closure of the ring of S-integers of F in F' is generated by its units (as a ring).

Counting rational points over number fields on a singular cubic surface

A conjecture of Manin predicts the distribution of K-rational points on certain algebraic varieties defined over a number field K. In recent years, a method using universal torsors has been successfully applied to several hard special cases of Manin's conjecture over the field Q of rational numbers. Combining this method with techniques developed by Schanuel, we give a proof of Manin's conjecture over arbitrary number fields for the singular cubic surface S given by the equation w^3 = x y z.

Counting imaginary quadratic points via universal torsors

A conjecture of Manin predicts the distribution of rational points on Fano varieties. We provide a framework for proofs of Manin's conjecture for del Pezzo surfaces over imaginary quadratic fields, using universal torsors. Some of our tools are formulated over arbitrary number fields. As an application, we prove Manin's conjecture over imaginary quadratic fields K for the quartic del Pezzo surface S of singularity type A_3 with five lines given in P^4 by the equations vw - xy = vy + wy + xz = 0.

On rings of integers generated by their units

We give an affirmative answer to the following question by Jarden and Narkiewicz: Is it true that every number field has a finite extension L such that the ring of integers of L is generated by its units (as a ring)? As a part of the proof, we generalize a theorem by Hinz on power-free values of polynomials in number fields.

Non-unique factorization of polynomials over residue class rings of the integers

We investigate non-unique factorization of polynomials in Z_{p^n}[x] into irreducibles. As a Noetherian ring whose zero-divisors are contained in the Jacobson radical, Z_{p^n}[x] is atomic. We reduce the question of factoring arbitrary non-zero polynomials into irreducibles to the problem of factoring monic polynomials into monic irreducibles. The multiplicative monoid of monic polynomials of Z_{p^n}[x] is a direct sum of monoids corresponding to irreducible polynomials in Z_p[x], and we show that each of these monoids has infinite elasticity. Moreover, for every positive integer m, there exists in each of these monoids a product of 2 irreducibles that can also be represented as a product of m irreducibles.

Additive unit representations in global fields - A survey

We give an overview on recent results concerning additive unit representations. Furthermore the solutions of some open questions are included. The central problem is whether and how certain rings are (additively) generated by their units. This has been investigated for several types of rings related to global fields, most importantly rings of algebraic integers. We also state some open problems and conjectures which we consider to be important in this field.
