Design of a millimetre-scale magnetic surface trap for cold atoms

We study a novel millimetre-scale magnetic trap for ultracold atoms, in which the current carrying conductors can be situated outside the vacuum region, a few mm away from the atoms. This design generates a magnetic field gradient in excess of \SI{1000}{G/cm} at a distance of \SI{2}{mm} from the conductors. We perform electromagnetic and thermo-mechanical characterisation using Finite Element Methods (FEM). The predicted behaviour has been verified by electrical and thermal measurements on a prototype, but has not been implemented on an apparatus with cold atoms. Operating this trap at the highest gradient allows for rapid evaporative cooling comparable to that achieved by atom chips.

Bose gas: Theory and Experiment

For many years, $^4$He typified Bose-Einstein superfluids, but recent advances in dilute ultra-cold alkali-metal gases have provided new neutral superfluids that are particularly tractable because the system is dilute. This chapter starts with a brief review of the physics of superfluid $^4$He, followed by the basic ideas of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), first for an ideal Bose gas and then considering the effect of interparticle interactions, including time-dependent phenomena. Extensions to more exotic condensates include magnetic dipolar gases, mixtures of two components, and spinor condensates that require a focused infrared laser for trapping of all the various hyperfine magnetic states in a particular hyperfine $F$ manifold of $m_F$ states. With an applied rotation, the trapped BECs nucleate quantized vortices. Recent theory and experiment have shown that laser coupling fields can mimic the effect of rotation. The resulting synthetic gauge fields have produced vortices in a nonrotating condensate.

Tunnelling dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensate in a four wells loop shaped system

We investigated the tunnelling dynamics of a zero-temperature Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in configuration of four potential wells arranged in a loop. We found three interesting dynamic regimes: (a) flows of matter with small amplitude, (b) steady flow and (c) forced flow of matter for large amplitudes. The regime of quantum self-confinement has been studied and a new variant of it has been found for this system.
