The Rise of Artificial Intelligence in Educational Measurement: Opportunities and Ethical Challenges

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in educational measurement has revolutionized assessment methods, enabling automated scoring, rapid content analysis, and personalized feedback through machine learning and natural language processing. These advancements provide timely, consistent feedback and valuable insights into student performance, thereby enhancing the assessment experience. However, the deployment of AI in education also raises significant ethical concerns regarding validity, reliability, transparency, fairness, and equity. Issues such as algorithmic bias and the opacity of AI decision-making processes pose risks of perpetuating inequalities and affecting assessment outcomes. Responding to these concerns, various stakeholders, including educators, policymakers, and organizations, have developed guidelines to ensure ethical AI use in education. The National Council of Measurement in Education's Special Interest Group on AI in Measurement and Education (AIME) also focuses on establishing ethical standards and advancing research in this area. In this paper, a diverse group of AIME members examines the ethical implications of AI-powered tools in educational measurement, explores significant challenges such as automation bias and environmental impact, and proposes solutions to ensure AI's responsible and effective use in education.

Using Language Models to Detect Alarming Student Responses

This article details the advances made to a system that uses artificial intelligence to identify alarming student responses. This system is built into our assessment platform to assess whether a student's response indicates they are a threat to themselves or others. Such responses may include details concerning threats of violence, severe depression, suicide risks, and descriptions of abuse. Driven by advances in natural language processing, the latest model is a fine-tuned language model trained on a large corpus consisting of student responses and supplementary texts. We demonstrate that the use of a language model delivers a substantial improvement in accuracy over the previous iterations of this system.

Language models and Automated Essay Scoring

In this paper, we present a new comparative study on automatic essay scoring (AES). The current state-of-the-art natural language processing (NLP) neural network architectures are used in this work to achieve above human-level accuracy on the publicly available Kaggle AES dataset. We compare two powerful language models, BERT and XLNet, and describe all the layers and network architectures in these models. We elucidate the network architectures of BERT and XLNet using clear notation and diagrams and explain the advantages of transformer architectures over traditional recurrent neural network architectures. Linear algebra notation is used to clarify the functions of transformers and attention mechanisms. We compare the results with more traditional methods, such as bag of words (BOW) and long short term memory (LSTM) networks.

Neural network approach to classifying alarming student responses to online assessment

Automated scoring engines are increasingly being used to score the free-form text responses that students give to questions. Such engines are not designed to appropriately deal with responses that a human reader would find alarming such as those that indicate an intention to self-harm or harm others, responses that allude to drug abuse or sexual abuse or any response that would elicit concern for the student writing the response. Our neural network models have been designed to help identify these anomalous responses from a large collection of typical responses that students give. The responses identified by the neural network can be assessed for urgency, severity, and validity more quickly by a team of reviewers than otherwise possible. Given the anomalous nature of these types of responses, our goal is to maximize the chance of flagging these responses for review given the constraint that only a fixed percentage of responses can viably be assessed by a team of reviewers.

A symmetric difference-differential Lax pair for Painlevé VI

We present a Lax pair for the sixth Painlevé equation arising as a continuous isomonodromic deformation of a system of linear difference equations with an additional symmetry structure. We call this a symmetric difference-differential Lax pair. We show how the discrete isomonodromic deformations of the associated linear problem gives us a discrete version of the fifth Painlevé equation. By considering degenerations we obtain symmetric difference-differential Lax pairs for the fifth Painlevé equation and the various degenerate versions of the third Painlevé equation.

Commutation Relations and Discrete Garnier Systems

We present four classes of nonlinear systems which may be considered discrete analogues of the Garnier system. These systems arise as discrete isomonodromic deformations of systems of linear difference equations in which the associated Lax matrices are presented in a factored form. A system of discrete isomonodromic deformations is completely determined by commutation relations between the factors. We also reparameterize these systems in terms of the image and kernel vectors at singular points to obtain a separate birational form. A distinguishing feature of this study is the presence of a symmetry condition on the associated linear problems that only appears as a necessary feature of the Lax pairs for the least degenerate discrete Painlevé equations.

An elliptic Garnier system

We present a linear system of difference equations whose entries are expressed in terms of theta functions. This linear system is singular at $4m+12$ points for $m \geq 1$, which appear in pairs due to a symmetry condition. We parameterize this linear system in terms a set of kernels at the singular points. We regard the system of discrete isomonodromic deformations as an elliptic analogue of the Garnier system. We identify the special case in which $m=1$ with the elliptic Painlevé equation, hence, this work provides an explicit form and Lax pair for the elliptic Painlevé equation.

Spectral curves and discrete Painlevé equations

It is well known that isomonodromic deformations admit a Hamiltonian description. These Hamiltonians appear as coefficients of the characteristic equations of their Lax matrices, which define spectral curves for linear systems of differential and difference systems. The characteristic equations in the case of the associated linear problems for various discrete Painlevé equations is biquadratic in the Painlevé variables. We show that the discrete isomonodromic deformations that define the discrete Painlevé equations may be succinctly described in terms of the characteristic equation of their Lax matrices.

Twisted reductions of integrable lattice equations, and their Lax representations

It is well known that from two-dimensional lattice equations one can derive one-dimensional lattice equations by imposing periodicity in some direction. In this paper we generalize the periodicity condition by adding a symmetry transformation and apply this idea to autonomous and non-autonomous lattice equations. As results of this approach, we obtain new reductions of the discrete potential Korteweg-de Vries equation, discrete modified Korteweg-de Vries equation and the discrete Schwarzian Korteweg-de Vries equation. We will also describe a direct method for obtaining Lax representations for the reduced equations.

Symmetries and Special Solutions of Reductions of the Lattice Potential KdV Equation

We identify a periodic reduction of the non-autonomous lattice potential Korteweg-de Vries equation with the additive discrete Painlevé equation with $E^{(1)}_6$ symmetry. We present a description of a set of symmetries of the reduced equations and their relations to the symmetries of the discrete Painlevé equation. Finally, we exploit the simple symmetric form of the reduced equations to find rational and hypergeometric solutions of this discrete Painlevé equation.

Tropical geometric interpretation of ultradiscrete singularity confinement

Using the interpretation of the ultradiscretization procedure as a non-Archimedean valuation, we use results of tropical geometry to show how roots and poles manifest themselves in piece-wise linear systems as points of non-differentiability. This will allow us to demonstrate a correspondence between singularity confinement for discrete integrable systems and ultradiscrete singularity confinement for ultradiscrete integrable systems.

Construction of a Lax Pair for the $E_6^{(1)}$ $q$-Painlevé System

We construct a Lax pair for the $E^{(1)}_6 $ $q$-Painlevé system from first principles by employing the general theory of semi-classical orthogonal polynomial systems characterised by divided-difference operators on discrete, quadratic lattices [arXiv:1204.2328]. Our study treats one special case of such lattices - the $q$-linear lattice - through a natural generalisation of the big $q$-Jacobi weight. As a by-product of our construction we derive the coupled first-order $q$-difference equations for the $E^{(1)}_6 $ $q$-Painlevé system, thus verifying our identification. Finally we establish the correspondences of our result with the Lax pairs given earlier and separately by Sakai and Yamada, through explicit transformations.

Reductions of lattice mKdV to $q$-$\mathrm{P}_{VI}$

This Letter presents a reduction of the lattice modified Korteweg-de-Vries equation that gives rise to a $q$-analogue of the sixth Painlevé equation. This new approach allows us to give the first ultradiscrete Lax representation of an ultradiscrete analogue of the sixth Painlevé equation.

Symmetries in Connection Preserving Deformations

We wish to show that the root lattice of Bäcklund transformations of the $q$-analogue of the third and fourth Painlevé equations, which is of type $(A_2+ A_1)^{(1)}$, may be expressed as a quotient of the lattice of connection preserving deformations. Furthermore, we will show various directions in the lattice of connection preserving deformations present equivalent evolution equations under suitable transformations. These transformations correspond to the Dynkin diagram automorphisms.

The Lattice Structure of Connection Preserving Deformations for q-Painlevé Equations I

We wish to explore a link between the Lax integrability of the $q$-Painlevé equations and the symmetries of the $q$-Painlevé equations. We shall demonstrate that the connection preserving deformations that give rise to the $q$-Painlevé equations may be thought of as elements of the groups of Schlesinger transformations of their associated linear problems. These groups admit a very natural lattice structure. Each Schlesinger transformation induces a Bäcklund transformation of the $q$-Painlevé equation. Each translational Bäcklund transformation may be lifted to the level of the associated linear problem, effectively showing that each translational Bäcklund transformation admits a Lax pair. We will demonstrate this framework for the $q$-Painlevé equations up to and including $q$-$\mathrm{P}_{\mathrm{VI}}$.

Connection preserving deformations and $q$-semi-classical orthogonal polynomials

We present a framework for the study of $q$-difference equations satisfied by $q$-semi-classical orthogonal systems. As an example, we identify the $q$-difference equation satisfied by a deformed version of the little $q$-Jacobi polynomials as a gauge transformation of a special case of the associated linear problem for $q$-$\mathrm{P}_{\mathrm{VI}}$. We obtain a parameterization of the associated linear problem in terms of orthogonal polynomial variables and find the relation between this parameterization and that of Jimbo and Sakai.

A study of the associated linear problem for $q$-$\mathrm{P}_{\mathrm{V}}$

We consider the associated linear problem for a q-analogue of the fifth Painleve equation (qPV). We identify a lattice of connection preserving deformations in the space of the connection data for the linear problem with the lattice of translational Backlund transformations for qPV, hence, show all translational Backlund transformations possess a Lax pair. We shall show that the big q-Laguerre polynomials, and a suitable generalization, solve a special case of the linear problem, hence, find solutions to qPV in terms of determinants of Hankel matrices with entries consisting of rational or hypergeometric functions.

Differential equations for deformed Laguerre polynomials

The distribution function for the first eigenvalue spacing in the Laguerre unitary ensemble of finite size may be expressed in terms of a solution of the fifth Painleve transcendent. The generating function of a certain discontinuous linear statistic of the Laguerre unitary ensemble can similarly be expressed in terms of a solution of the fifth Painleve equation. The methodology used to derive these results rely on two theories regarding differential equations for orthogonal polynomial systems, one involving isomonodromic deformations and the other ladder operators. We compare the two theories by showing how either can be used to obtain a characterization of a more general Laguerre unitary ensemble average in terms of the Hamiltonian system for Painleve V.
