Defect entanglement entropy for superconformal RG Interfaces

We study the defect contribution to the entanglement entropy of a spherical region centred on four-dimensional superconformal RG interfaces. These interfaces are supersymmetric codimension one defects separating the Leigh--Strassler SCFT vacuum and the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory deformed by spatially varying mass terms. Exploiting the holographic dual to these interfaces, we extract a cutoff-independent interface contribution to the entanglement entropy, $\mathcal{C}^I$. We quantify the non-trivial dependence of $\mathcal{C}^I$ on the supersymmetric mass deformation, and observe a scaling regime for large deformations. We further relate $\mathcal{C}^I$ to the renormalized on-shell action and the stress-tensor one-point function of the interface theory. Our results provide the first fully backreacted holographic computation of this entanglement quantity for superconformal RG interfaces in more than two dimensions.

Spindle solutions with hyperscalars in $D=4$ gauged supergravity

We construct new classes of supersymmetric $AdS_2\times \Sigma$ solutions, where $\Sigma=\Sigma(n_N,n_S)$ is a spindle. Such solutions can arise as the near horizon limit of supersymmetric, accelerating black holes. The solutions are constructed using $D=4$ STU $U(1)^4$ gauged supergravity theory coupled to a charged hyperscalar, and can be uplifted to obtain smooth, supersymmetric $AdS_2\times Y_9$ solutions of $D=11$ supergravity. We allow $(n_N,n_S)$ to be non-coprime integers, including orbifolds of the round $S^2$. We also allow the hyperscalar to vanish at the poles. The $AdS_2$ solutions with non-vanishing hyperscalar can naturally arise as the endpoint of holographic RG flows, triggered by relevant hyperscalar deformations of the $AdS_2$ solutions of the STU model.

Approaching a dynamical extreme black hole horizon

We give an explicit closed form description of the late-time near-horizon approach to dynamical extreme Reissner-Nordstrom (DERN) black holes. These are spherically symmetric dynamical solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to a neutral scalar that feature: (i) a spacetime metric which tends to that of a static extreme Reissner-Nordstrom (RN), and (ii) a scalar field which exhibits the linear Aretakis instability ad infinitum in the non-linear theory. We employ the two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity to solve explicitly for the non-linear s-wave dynamics of the four-dimensional theory near an ${\rm AdS}_2\times {\rm S}^2$ throat. For a teleologically defined black hole horizon, we impose boundary conditions on JT's dilaton field (which encodes the gravitational dynamics) and the scalar matter as follows: (i) the JT dilaton decays at late times on the ${\rm AdS}_2$ boundary to a value that corresponds to a static extreme RN in the exterior, and (ii) the scalar obeys boundary conditions characteristic of linear Aretakis behavior on ${\rm AdS}_2$. We ensure our DERN solutions are singularity-free and we note that our approach to DERN is accompanied by a final burst of outgoing scalar matter flux leaking out of the ${\rm AdS}_2$ throat. The boundary conditions we impose on the JT dilaton place its late-time boundary profile on the threshold of black hole formation with sub-extreme and super-extreme RN on either side of our DERNs.

Monodromy Defects in Massive Type IIA

In this paper we study solutions to massive Type IIA supergravity which we propose are dual to co-dimension 2 monodromy defects in 6d (1,0) CFTs realised in NS5-D6-D8 brane systems, as well as in the 5d Sp(N) fixed point theory. In the first case the defects are studied holographically as solutions to 7d $U(1)$ gauged supergravity that asymptote locally to its maximally supersymmetric $\text{AdS}_7$ vacuum away from the defects. In the second case they are dual to solutions to 6d $U(1)^2$ gauged supergravity that asymptote to its maximally supersymmetric $\text{AdS}_6$ vacuum. These solutions are then uplifted to massive Type IIA supergravity using known consistent truncations previously constructed in the literature. We compute the defect entanglement entropy and provide evidence that for the 3d defects, the entanglement entropy can be written as a linear combination of the free energy and conformal weight of the defect. Finally, we construct new co-dimension 2 monodromy defects in 6d and 5d CFTs compactified on Riemann surfaces and/or spindles.

Defect entanglement entropy for superconformal monodromy defects

We compute the defect entanglement entropy for co-dimension two superconformal monodromy defects in well known maximally symmetric holographic theories of various dimension. In each case we explicitly relate the universal part of the defect entanglement entropy to field theory data characterising the defect conformal field theory. We provide evidence that, unlike in the bulk theories in which the defects reside, the universal part of the defect entanglement entropy does not necessarily decrease along a renormalisation group flow.

Spindle solutions, hyperscalars and smooth uplifts

We construct $AdS_3\times Y_7$ solutions of type IIB supergravity, where $Y_7$ is a smooth $S^5$ bundle over a spindle $\Sigma(n_N,n_S)$, which are dual to $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ SCFTs in $d=2$. The solutions are constructed using the $D=5$ STU $U(1)^3$ gauged supergravity theory coupled to a hyperscalar charged under $U(1)_B$. We investigate spindle solutions with two new features: first, we allow $(n_N,n_S)$ to be non-coprime integers, including orbifolds of the round $S^2$, which can lead to non-unique, inequivalent uplifts, distinguished by the hyperscalar spectra, for given magnetic flux through the spindle. Second, we also allow the hyperscalar to vanish at the poles leading to solutions carrying non-vanishing $U(1)_B$ flux. The new hyperscalar $AdS_3$ solutions can naturally arise as the endpoint of RG flows, triggered by relevant hyperscalar deformations of the $AdS_3$ solutions of the STU model.

de Sitter versus Anti de Sitter flows and the (super)gravity landscape: Part II

Generic solutions are studied in Einstein-scalar gravity in an ansatz that can interpolate between de Sitter and Anti-de Sitter regimes. The scalar potential is arbitrary. All solutions are determined by their end-points in the scalar field space. All such end-points are classified. This provides a complete classification and characterization of the full space of regular solutions. It is shown that there are no regular (Centaur) solutions that interpolate between an AdS boundary and a dS interior, within our ansatz, when $d>2$. This no-go theorem persists in the presence of multiple scalar fields with a non-trivial field space metric. The Gubser classification of regular solutions is also upgraded to include cases that are not Lorentz invariant and do not contain AdS boundaries.

Superconformal Monodromy Defects in ABJM and mABJM Theory

We study $D=11$ supergravity solutions which are dual to one-dimensional superconformal defects in $d=3$ SCFTs. We consider defects in ABJM theory with monodromy for $U(1)^4\subset SO(8)$ global symmetry, as well as in $\mathcal{N}=2$ mABJM SCFT, which arises from the RG flow of a mass deformation of ABJM theory, with monodromy for $U(1)^3\subset SU(3)\times U(1)$ global symmetry. We show that the defects of the two SCFTs are connected by a line of bulk marginal mass deformations and argue that they are also related by bulk RG flow. In all cases we allow for the possibility of conical singularities at the location of the defect. Various physical observables of the defects are computed including the defects conformal weight and the partition function, as well as associated supersymmetric Renyi entropies.

Superconformal Monodromy Defects in $\mathcal{N}$=4 SYM and LS theory

We study type IIB supergravity solutions that are dual to two-dimensional superconformal defects in $d=4$ SCFTs which preserve $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetry. We consider solutions dual to defects in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory that have non-trivial monodromy for $U(1)^3\subset SO(6)$ global symmetry and we also allow for the possibility of conical singularities. In addition, we consider the addition of fermionic and bosonic mass terms that have non trivial dependence on the spatial directions transverse to the defect, while preserving the superconformal symmetry of the defect. We compute various physical quantities including the central charges of the defect expressed as a function of the monodromy, the on-shell action as well as associated supersymmetric Renyi entropies. Analogous computations are carried out for superconformal defects in the $\mathcal{N}=1$, $d=4$ Leigh-Strassler SCFT. We also show that the defects of the two SCFTs are connected by a line of bulk marginal mass deformations and argue that they are also related by bulk RG flow.

Leigh-Strassler compactified on a spindle

We construct a new class of supersymmetric $AdS_3\times Y_7$ solutions of type IIB supergravity, where $Y_7$ is an $S^5$ fibration over a spindle, which are dual to $d=2$, $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ SCFTs. The solutions are constructed in a sub-truncation of $D=5$, $SO(6)$ maximal gauged supergravity and they all lie within the anti-twist class. We show that the central charge computed from the gravity solutions agrees with an anomaly polynomial calculation associated with compactifying the $\mathcal{N}=1$, $d=4$ Leigh-Strassler SCFT on a spindle.

Marginal deformations and RG flows for type IIB S-folds

We construct a continuous one parameter family of $AdS_4\times S^1\times S^5$ S-fold solutions of type IIB string theory which have nontrivial $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ monodromy in the $S^1$ direction. The solutions span a subset of a conformal manifold that contains the known $\mathcal{N}=4$ S-fold SCFT in $d=3$, and generically preserve $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry. We also construct RG flows across dimensions, from $AdS_5\times S^5$, dual to $\mathcal{N}=4$, $d=4$ SYM compactified with a twisted spatial circle, to various $AdS_4\times S^1\times S^5$ S-fold solutions, dual to $d=3$ SCFTs. We construct additional flows between the $AdS_5$ dual of the Leigh-Strassler SCFT and an $\mathcal{N}=2$ S-fold as well as RG flows between various S-folds.

A new family of $AdS_4$ S-folds in type IIB string theory

We construct infinite new classes of $AdS_4\times S^1\times S^5$ solutions of type IIB string theory which have non-trivial $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ monodromy along the $S^1$ direction. The solutions are supersymmetric and holographically dual, generically, to $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs in $d=3$. The solutions are first constructed as $AdS_4\times \mathbb{R}$ solutions in $D=5$ $SO(6)$ gauged supergravity and then uplifted to $D=10$. Unlike the known $AdS_4\times \mathbb{R}$ S-fold solutions, there is no continuous symmetry associated with the $\mathbb{R}$ direction. The solutions all arise as limiting cases of Janus solutions of $d=4$, $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory which are supported both by a different value of the coupling constant on either side of the interface, as well as by fermion and boson mass deformations. As special cases, the construction recovers three known S-fold constructions, preserving $\mathcal{N}=1,2$ and 4 supersymmetry, as well as a recently constructed $\mathcal{N}=1$ $AdS_4\times S^1\times S^5$ solution (not S-folded). We also present some novel "one-sided Janus" solutions that are non-singular.

Spatially modulated and supersymmetric mass deformations of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

We study mass deformations of $\mathcal{N}=4$, $d=4$ SYM theory that are spatially modulated in one spatial dimension and preserve some residual supersymmetry. We focus on generalisations of $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ theories and show that it is also possible, for suitably chosen supersymmetric masses, to preserve $d=3$ conformal symmetry associated with a co-dimension one interface. Holographic solutions can be constructed using $D=5$ theories of gravity that arise from consistent truncations of $SO(6)$ gauged supergravity and hence type IIB supergravity. For the mass deformations that preserve $d=3$ superconformal symmetry we construct a rich set of Janus solutions of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory which have the same coupling constant on either side of the interface. Limiting classes of these solutions give rise to RG interface solutions with $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM on one side of the interface and the Leigh-Strassler (LS) SCFT on the other, and also to a Janus solution for the LS theory. Another limiting solution is a new supersymmetric $AdS_4\times S^1\times S^5$ solution of type IIB supergravity.

Superconformal RG interfaces in holography

We construct gravitational solutions that holographically describe two different $d=4$ SCFTs joined together at a co-dimension one, planar RG interface and preserving $d=3$ superconformal symmetry. The RG interface joins $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory on one side with the $\mathcal{N}=1$ Leigh-Strassler SCFT on the other. We construct a family of such solutions, which in general are associated with spatially dependent mass deformations on the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM side, but there is a particular solution for which these deformations vanish. We also construct a Janus solution with the Leigh-Strassler SCFT on either side of the interface. Gravitational solutions associated with superconformal interfaces involving ABJM theory and two $d=3$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs with $G_2$ symmetry are also discussed and shown to have similar properties, but they also exhibit some new features.

Consistent truncations of supergravity and $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS RG flows in $4d$ SCFTs

With the purpose of holographically describing flows from a large family of four dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ conformal field theories, we discuss truncations of seven dimensional supergravity to five dimensions. We write explicitly the reduced gauged supergravity and find BPS equations for simple configurations. Lifting these flows to eleven dimensions or Massive IIA supergravity, we present string duals to RG flows from strongly coupled conformal theories when deformed by marginal and/or relevant operators. We further discuss observables common to infinite families of ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ QFTs in this context.

Consistent KK truncations for M5-branes wrapped on Riemann surfaces

We construct a consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of $D=11$ supergravity on $Σ_2\times S^4$, where $Σ_2=S^2,\mathbb{R}^2$ or $H^2$, or a quotient thereof, at the level of the bosonic fields. The result is a gauged $N=4$, $D=5$ supergravity theory coupled to three vector multiplets, with the gauging lying in an $SO(2)\times SE(3)\subset SO(5,3)$ subgroup of the $SO(1,1)\times SO(5,3)$ global symmetry group of the ungauged theory. For $Σ_2=H^2$, the $D=5$ theory has a maximally supersymmetric $AdS_5$ vacuum which uplifts to the known solution of $D=11$ supergravity corresponding to M5-branes wrapping a Riemann surface with genus greater than one and dual to an $N=2$ SCFT in $d=4$. For $Σ_2=S^2$, we find two $AdS_5$ solutions, one of which is new, and both of which are unstable. There is an additional subtruncation to an $N=2$ gauged supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets, with very special real manifold $SO(1,1)\times SO(1,1)$, and a single hypermultiplet, with quaternionic Kähler manifold $SU(2,1)/S[U(2)\times U(1)]$ and gauging associated with an $SO(2)\times\mathbb{R}\subset SU(2,1)$ subgroup.

Spatially modulated and supersymmetric deformations of ABJM theory

We construct supersymmetric solutions of $D=11$ supergravity, preserving 1/4 of the supersymmetry, that are holographically dual to ABJM theory which has been deformed by spatially varying mass terms depending on one of the two spatial directions. We show that the BPS equations reduce to the Helmholtz equation on the complex plane leading to rich classes of new solutions. In particular, the construction gives rise to infinite classes of supersymmetric boomerang RG flows, as well as generalising a known Janus solution.

Susy Q and spatially modulated deformations of ABJM theory

Within a holographic framework we construct supersymmetric Q-lattice (`Susy Q') solutions that describe RG flows driven by supersymmetric and spatially modulated deformations of the dual CFTs. We focus on a specific $D=4$ supergravity model which arises as a consistent KK truncation of $D=11$ supergravity on the seven sphere that preserves $SO(4)\times SO(4)$ symmetry. The Susy Q solutions are dual to boomerang RG flows, flowing from ABJM theory in the UV, deformed by spatially modulated mass terms depending on one of the spatial directions, back to the ABJM vacuum in the far IR. For large enough deformations the boomerang flows approach the well known Poincaré invariant RG dielectric flow. The spatially averaged energy density vanishes for the Susy Q solutions.
