Compact Size, High $\Sigma$SFR: Defining Morphological Features of Ly$\alpha$-Emitters

The mechanisms of Ly$\alpha$ photon escape are key to understanding galaxy evolution and cosmic reionization, yet remain poorly understood. We investigate the UV-continuum sizes of 23 Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) at Cosmic Noon ($1.7 < z < 3.3$), extending previous size analyses to include fainter galaxies ($M_{\rm UV} \simeq -14$) using gravitational lensing. Our results show that these LAEs are unusually small for their luminosity, with a mean effective radius ($r_{\rm eff}$) of $170 \pm 140$ pc. They follow a distinct size-luminosity relation, with an intercept at $M_{\rm UV} = -21$ approximately three times smaller than typical star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at similar redshifts. This relation, however, is consistent with that of low-redshift Green Pea galaxies, suggesting that LAEs maintain compact sizes across redshifts. We also find that Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width (EW(Ly$\alpha$)) increases with decreasing $r_{\rm eff}$, confirming previous findings. The small sizes of LAEs lead to high star formation surface densities ($\Sigma$SFR $= 1-600 M_{\odot} \ \rm{yr}^{-1} \ \rm{kpc^{-2}}$), clearly separating them from typical SFGs in the $\Sigma$SFR vs. $r_{\rm eff}$ space. Given that high $\Sigma$SFR is linked to strong galactic outflows, our findings imply that compact morphology plays a key role in Ly$\alpha$ escape, likely facilitated by outflows that clear under-dense channels in the ISM. Thus, these results demonstrate that compact size and high $\Sigma$SFR can help identify Ly$\alpha$-emitters.

The Rest-UV Spectral Properties of Dwarf Galaxies at $z\sim2$

Rest-UV spectroscopy can constrain properties of the stellar populations, outflows, covering fractions, and can indirectly constrain the Lyman continuum escape fraction of galaxies. Many works have studied the rest-UV spectra of more massive star forming galaxies and low-mass galaxies selected via strong nebular line emission or via Ly$\alpha$ emission. However, studies of rest-UV spectroscopy have yet to be done on an unbiased sample at low mass during the epoch of peak star formation ($z\sim2$). We present a stacked rest-UV spectrum of a complete sample of 16 dwarf galaxies ($\rm \langle log(M^*/M_\odot)\rangle_{median} = 8.2$) at $z\sim2$. The rest-UV Keck/LRIS spectroscopy is complemented by rest-optical Keck/MOSFIRE spectroscopy and Hubble photometry. We find generally larger Ly$\alpha$ equivalent widths ($\rm EW_{Ly\alpha} = 11.2\;$\AA) when compared with higher mass ($\rm \langle log(M^*/M_\odot)\rangle_{median} = 10.3$) composites from KBSS ($\rm EW_{Ly\alpha} = -5\;$\AA). The average low- and high-ionization absorption line EWs ($\rm EW_{LIS}$ and $\rm EW_{HIS}$, respectively) are weaker ($\rm EW_{LIS}$=-1.18 \AA, $\rm EW_{HIS}=$-0.99 \AA) in dwarf galaxies than in higher mass galaxies ($\rm EW_{LIS}$=-2.04 \AA, $\rm EW_{HIS}=$-1.42 \AA). The LIS absorption lines are optically thick and is thus a good tracer of the neutral hydrogen covering fraction. Both higher $\rm EW_{Ly\alpha}$ and lower $\rm EW_{LIS}$ measurements imply that the escape fraction of ionizing radiation is larger in lower-mass galaxies at $z\sim2$.

The Direct-Method Oxygen Abundance of Typical Dwarf Galaxies at Cosmic High-Noon

We present a Keck/MOSFIRE, rest-optical, composite spectrum of 16 typical, gravitationally-lensed, star-forming, dwarf galaxies at $1.7 \lesssim z \lesssim 2.6$ ($z_{\rm{mean}}=2.30$), all chosen independent of emission-line strength. These galaxies have a median stellar mass of $\log(M_\ast/\rm{M_\odot})_{\rm{med}} = 8.29^{+0.51}_{-0.43}$ and a median star formation rate of $\rm{SFR_{H\alpha}^{med} = 2.25^{+2.15}_{-1.26}\ M_\odot\ yr^{-1}}$. We measure the faint, electron-temperature-sensitive, [O III] $\lambda$4363 emission line at $2.5\sigma$ ($4.1\sigma$) significance when considering a bootstrapped (statistical-only) uncertainty spectrum. This yields a direct-method oxygen abundance of $12+\log(\rm{O/H})_{\rm{direct}}=7.88^{+0.25}_{-0.22}$ ($0.15^{+0.12}_{-0.06}\ \rm{Z_\odot}$). We investigate the applicability at high-$z$ of locally-calibrated, oxygen-based, strong-line metallicity relations, finding that the local reference calibrations of arXiv:1805.08224 best reproduce ($\lesssim 0.12$ dex) our composite metallicity at fixed strong-line ratio. At fixed $M_\ast$, our composite is well-represented by the $z \sim 2.3$ direct-method stellar mass$\,-\,$gas-phase metallicity relation (MZR) of arXiv:1907.00013. When comparing to predicted MZRs from the IllustrisTNG and FIRE simulations, we find excellent agreement with the FIRE MZR. Our composite is consistent with no metallicity evolution, at fixed $M_\ast$ and SFR, of the locally-defined fundamental metallicity relation. We measure the doublet ratio [O II] $\lambda$3729/[O II] $\lambda3726 = 1.56 \pm 0.32$ ($1.51 \pm 0.12$) and a corresponding electron density of $n_e = 1^{+215}_{-0}\ \rm{cm^{-3}}$ ($n_e = 1^{+74}_{-0}\ \rm{cm^{-3}}$) when considering the bootstrapped (statistical-only) error spectrum. This result suggests that lower-mass galaxies have lower densities than higher-mass galaxies at $z \sim 2$.

The Detection of [O III]$λ$4363 in a Lensed, Dwarf Galaxy at $z$ = 2.59: Testing Metallicity Indicators and Scaling Relations at High Redshift and Low Mass

We present Keck/MOSFIRE and Keck/LRIS spectroscopy of A1689-217, a lensed (magnification $\sim7.9$), star-forming (SFR $\sim$ 16 $\rm M_\odot\ yr^{-1}$), dwarf (log($M_\ast/M_\odot$) = $8.07-8.59$), Ly$α$-emitter ($\rm EW_0\sim138$ A) at $z$ = 2.5918. Dwarf galaxies similar to A1689-217 are common at high redshift and likely responsible for reionization, yet few have been studied with detailed spectroscopy. We report a 4.2$σ$ detection of the electron-temperature-sensitive [O III]$λ$4363 emission line and use this line to directly measure an oxygen abundance of 12+$\log$(O/H) = 8.06 $\pm$ 0.12 ($\sim1/4\ \rm Z_\odot$). A1689-217 is the lowest mass galaxy at $z>$ 2 with an [O III]$λ$4363 detection. Using the rest-optical emission lines, we measure A1689-217's other nebular conditions including electron temperature ($T_e$([O III]) $\sim$ 14,000 K), electron density ($n_e\sim$ 220 $\rm cm^{-3}$) and reddening ($E(B-V)\sim$ 0.39). We study relations between strong-line ratios and direct metallicities with A1689-217 and other galaxies with [O III]$λ$4363 detections at $z\sim0-3.1$, showing that the locally-calibrated, oxygen-based, strong-line relations are consistent from $z\sim0-3.1$. We also show additional evidence that the $\rm O_{32}$ vs. $\rm R_{23}$ excitation diagram can be utilized as a redshift-invariant, direct-metallicity-based, oxygen abundance diagnostic out to $z\sim$ 3.1. From this excitation diagram and the strong-line ratio $-$ metallicity plots, we observe that the ionization parameter at fixed O/H is consistent with no redshift evolution. Although A1689-217 is metal-rich for its $M_\ast$ and SFR, we find it to be consistent within the large scatter of the low-mass end of the Fundamental Metallicity Relation.
