Enabling Technologies for Scalable Superconducting Quantum Computing

Experiments with superconducting quantum processors have successfully demonstrated the basic functions needed for quantum computation and evidence of utility, albeit without a sizable array of error-corrected qubits. The realization of the full potential of quantum computing centers on achieving large scale fault-tolerant quantum computers. Science, engineering and industry advances are needed to robustly generate, sustain, and efficiently manipulate an exponentially large computational (Hilbert) space as well as supply the number and quality components needed for such a scaled system. In this article, we suggest critical areas of quantum system and ecosystem development, with respect to the handling and transmission of quantum information within and out of a cryogenic environment, that would accelerate the development of quantum computers based on superconducting circuits.

Observation of Photon Blockade in a Tavis-Cummings System

We observe blockade of microwave photons in a Tavis-Cummings system comprising a superconducting cavity and up to $N=3$ transmon qubits. The effect is characterized with photon number-resolving spectroscopy using an additional dispersively coupled transmon "witness" qubit to directly probe the cavity's photon number distribution. We first observe polariton formation with splitting proportional to $\sqrt{N}$, confirming the Tavis-Cummings coupling, and subsequently obtain sub-Poissonian cavity photon statistics when the cavity is driven at polariton frequencies.

Digital Quantum Simulation of Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics: Insights from Superconducting and Trapped Ion Quantum Testbeds

We explore the potential for hybrid development of quantum hardware where currently available quantum computers simulate open Cavity Quantum Electrodynamical (CQED) systems for applications in optical quantum communication, simulation and computing. Our simulations make use of a recent quantum algorithm that maps the dynamics of a singly excited open Tavis-Cummings model containing N atoms coupled to a lossy cavity. We report the results of executing this algorithm on two noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers: a superconducting processor and a trapped ion processor, to simulate the population dynamics of an open CQED system featuring N = 3 atoms. By applying technology-specific transpilation and error mitigation techniques, we minimize the impact of gate errors, noise, and decoherence in each hardware platform, obtaining results which agree closely with the exact solution of the system. These results can be used as a recipe for efficient and platform-specific quantum simulation of cavity-emitter systems on contemporary and future quantum computers.

Slightly Non-Minimal Dark Matter in PAMELA and ATIC

We present a simple model in which dark matter couples to the standard model through a light scalar intermediary that is itself unstable. We find this model has several notable features, and allows a natural explanation for a surplus of positrons, but no surplus of anti-protons, as has been suggested by early data from PAMELA and ATIC. Moreover, this model yields a very small nucleon coupling, well below the direct detection limits. In this paper we explore the effect of this model in both the early universe and in the galaxy.

Dark matter in natural supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model

We explore the dark matter sector in extensions of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) that can provide a good fit to the PAMELA cosmic ray positron excess, while at the same time addressing the little hierarchy problem of the MSSM. Adding a singlet Higgs superfield, S, can account for the observed positron excess, as recently discussed in the literature, but we point out that it requires a fine-tuned choice for the parameters of the model. We find that including an additional singlet allows both a reduction of the weak-scale fine-tuning, and an interpretation of the cosmic ray observations in terms of dark matter annihilations in the galactic halo. Our setup contains a light axion, but does not require light CP-even scalars in the spectrum.

Protecting unparticles from the MSSM Higgs sector

We construct a model of an unparticle sector consisting of a supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory with the number of flavors in the Seiberg conformal window. We couple this sector to the MSSM via heavy messengers. The resulting low energy theory has a Higgs coupling to unparticles. The Higgs vev drives the hidden Seiberg sector to a new conformal fixed point. The coupling to the Higgs mediates supersymmetry breaking to the Seiberg sector, and breaks conformal invariance at a lower scale. The low energy theory contains light stable and metastable mesons. Higgs decay into this sector gives signatures which are similar to those of "hidden valley" models. Decays of the lightest superpartner of standard model particles into the hidden sector reveal potentially observable unparticle kinematics.

Stability in MaVaN Models

Mass-varying neutrino (MaVaN) models propose a source of dark energy in a new scalar field called the acceleron. Recent work has shown that nonrelativistic neutrino fields in these theories are unstable to inhomogeneous fluctuations, and form structures that no longer behave as dark energy. One might expect that in multiple-neutrino models, the lighter species could continue to act as a source for the acceleron, generating dark energy without the help of heavier species. This paper shows that by considering the evolution of the acceleron field for a large class of models, the result of any neutrino component becoming unstable is that all components become unstable within a short time on cosmological scales. An alternate model employing a second scalar field in a hybrid potential is shown to have stable MaVaN dark energy even in the presence of unstable heavier components.
