The Case for a Muon Collider Higgs Factory

We propose the construction of a compact Muon Collider Higgs Factory. Such a machine can produce up to \sim 14,000 at 8\times 10^{31} cm^-2 sec^-1 clean Higgs events per year, enabling the most precise possible measurement of the mass, width and Higgs-Yukawa coupling constants.

"Super"-Dilatation Symmetry of the Top-Higgs System

The top-Higgs system, consisting of top quark (LH doublet, RH singlet) and Higgs boson kinetic terms, with gauge fields set to zero, has an exact (modulo total divergences) symmetry where both fermion and Higgs fields are shifted and mixed in a supersymmetric fashion. The full Higgs-Yukawa interaction and Higgs-potential, including additional \sim 1/Λ^2 NJL-like interactions, also has this symmetry to O(1/Λ^4), up to null-operators. Thus the interaction lagrangian can be viewed as a power series in 1/Λ^2. The symmetry involves interplay of the Higgs quartic interaction with the Higgs-Yukawa interaction and implies the relationship, λ= \half g^2 between the top--Yukawa coupling, g, and Higgs quartic coupling, λ, at a high energy scale Λ>= few TeV. We interpret this to be a new physics scale. The top quark is massless in the symmetric phase, satisfying the Nambu-Goldstone theorem. The fermionic shift part of the current is \propto (1-H^\dagger H/v^2), owing to the interplay of λand g, and vanishes in the broken phase. Hence the Nambu-Goldstone theorem is trivially evaded in the broken phase and the top quark becomes heavy (it is not a Goldstino). We have m_t=m_h, subject to radiative corrections that can in principle pull the Higgs into concordance with experiment.

Topological Interactions in Warped Extra Dimensions

Topological interactions will be generated in theories with compact extra dimensions where fermionic chiral zero modes have different localizations. This is the case in many warped extra dimension models where the right-handed top quark is typically localized away from the left-handed one. Using deconstruction techniques, we study the topological interactions in these models. These interactions appear as trilinear and quadrilinear gauge boson couplings in low energy effective theories with three or more sites, as well as in the continuum limit. We derive the form of these interactions for various cases, including examples of Abelian, non-Abelian and product gauge groups of phenomenological interest. The topological interactions provide a window into the more fundamental aspects of these theories and could result in unique signatures at the Large Hadron Collider, some of which we explore.

Dirac Branes and Anomalies/Chern-Simons terms in any D

The Dirac quantization procedure of a magnetic monopole can be used to derive the coefficient of the D=3 Chern-Simons term through a self-consistency argument, which can be readily generalized to any odd D. This yields consistent and covariant axial anomaly coefficients on a D-1 boundary, and Chern-Simons term coefficients in D. In D=3 magnetic monopoles cannot exist if the Chern-Simons AdA term is present. The Dirac solenoid then becomes a physical closed string carrying electric current. The charge carriers on the string must be consistent with the charge used to quantize the Dirac solenoidal flux. This yields the Chern-Simons term coefficient. In higher odd D the intersection of (D-1)/2 Dirac branes yields a charged world-line permitting the consistency argument. The covariant anomaly coefficients follow readily from generalizing the counterterm. This purely bosonic derivation of anomalies is quite simple, involving semiclassical evaluation of exact integrals, like \int dAdA...dA, in the brane intersections.

Chern-Simons and WZW Anomaly Cancelations Across Dimensions

The WZW functional in D=4 can be derived directly from the Chern-Simons functional of a compactified D=5 gauge theory and the boundary fermions it supplants. A simple pedagogical model based on U(1) gauge groups illustrates how this works. A bulk-boundary system with the fermions eliminated manifestly evinces anomaly cancelations between CS and WZW terms.

Standard Model Gauging of the WZW Term: Anomalies, Global Currents and pseudo-Chern-Simons Interactions

The standard model $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ gauging of the Wess-Zumino-Witten term requires a modified counterterm when background fields, needed to generate the full set of currents, are introduced. The modified counterterm plays an essential role in properly defining covariant global currents and their anomalies. For example, it is required in order to correctly derive the gauge invariant baryon number current and its anomalous divergence. The background fields can also be promoted to a description of the physical spin-1 vector and axial-vector mesons in QCD and the counterterm leads to novel interactions. These are (pseudo-) Chern-Simons terms, such as $ε^{μνρσ} ω_μZ_ν\partial_ρA_σ$ and $ε^{μνρσ} ρ^{\pm}_μW^{\mp}_ν\partial_ρA_σ$ that mediate new interactions between neutrinos and photons at finite baryon density.

Anomaly mediated neutrino-photon interactions at finite baryon density

We propose new physical processes based on the axial vector anomaly and described by the Wess-Zumino-Witten term that couples the photon, Z-boson, and the omega-meson. The interaction takes the form of a pseudo-Chern-Simons term, $\sim ε_{μνρσ}ω^μZ^νF^{ρσ}$. This term induces neutrino-photon interactions at finite baryon density via the coupling of the Z-boson to neutrinos. These interactions may be detectable in various laboratory and astrophysical arenas. The new interactions may account for the MiniBooNE excess. They also produce a competitive contribution to neutron star cooling at temperatures >10^9 K. These processes and related axion--photon interactions at finite baryon density appear to be relevant in many astrophysical regimes.

T-Parity Violation by Anomalies

Little Higgs theories often rely on an internal parity ("T-parity'') to suppress non-standard electroweak effects or to provide a dark matter candidate. We show that such a symmetry is generally broken by anomalies, as described by the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. We study a simple SU(3) x SU(3)/SU(3) Little Higgs scheme where we obtain a minimal form for the topological interactions of a single Higgs field. The results apply to more general models, including [SU(3) x SU(3)/SU(3)]^4, SU(5)/SO(5), and SU(6)/Sp(6).

Topological Physics of Little Higgs Bosons

Topological interactions will generally occur in composite Higgs or Little Higgs theories, extra-dimensional gauge theories in which A_5 plays the role of a Higgs boson, and amongst the pNGB's of technicolor. This phenomena arises from the chiral and anomaly structure of the underlying UV completion theory, and/or through chiral delocalization in higher dimensions. These effects are described by a full Wess-Zumino-Witten term involving gauge fields and pNGB's. We give a general discussion of these interactions, some of which may have novel signatures at future colliders, such as the LHC and ILC.

Exact Equivalence of the D=4 Gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten Term and the D=5 Yang-Mills Chern-Simons Term

We derive the full Wess-Zumino-Witten term of a gauged chiral lagrangian in D=4 by starting from a pure Yang-Mills theory of gauged quark flavor in a flat, compactified D=5. The theory is compactified such that there exists a B_5 zero mode, and supplemented with quarks that are ``chirally delocalized'' with q_L (q_R) on the left (right) boundary (brane). The theory then necessarily contains a Chern-Simons term (anomaly flux) to cancel the fermionic anomalies on the boundaries. The constituent quark mass represents chiral symmetry breaking and is a bilocal operator in D=5 of the form: \bar{q}_LWq_R+h.c, where W is the Wilson line spanning the bulk, 0\leq x^5 \leq R and is interpreted as a chiral meson field, W=\exp(2i\tildeπ/f_π), where f_π\sim 1/R. The quarks are integrated out, yielding a Dirac determinant which takes the form of a ``boundary term'' (anomaly flux return), and is equivalent to Bardeen's counterterm that connects consistent and covariant anomalies. The Wess-Zumino-Witten term then emerges straightforwardly, from the Yang-Mills Chern-Simons term, plus boundary term. The method is systematic and allows generalization of the Wess-Zumino-Witten term to theories of extra dimensions, and to express it in alternative and more compact forms. We give a novel form appropriate to the case of (unintegrated) massless fermions.

Anomalies, Chern-Simons Terms and Chiral Delocalization in Extra Dimensions

Gauge invariant topological interactions, such as the D=5 Chern-Simons terms, are required in models in extra dimensions that split anomaly free representations. The Chern-Simons term is necessary to maintain the overall anomaly cancellations of the theory, but it can have significant, observable, physical effects. The CS-term locks the KK-mode parity to the parity of space-time, leaving a single parity symmetry. It leads to new processes amongst KK-modes, eg, the decay of a KK-mode to a 2-body final state of KK-modes. A formalism for the effective interaction amongst KK-modes is constructed, and the decay of a KK-mode to KK-mode plus zero mode is analyzed as an example. We elaborate the general KK-mode current and anomaly structure of these theories. This includes a detailed study of the triangle diagrams and the associated ``consistent anomalies'' for Weyl spinors on the boundary branes. We also develop the non-abelian formalism. We illustrate this by showing in a simple way how a D=5 Yang-Mills ``quark flavor'' symmetry leads to the D=4 chiral lagrangian of mesons and the quantized Wess-Zumino-Witten term.

Conjecture on the Physical Implications of the Scale Anomaly

Murray Gell-Mann, after co-inventing QCD, recognized the interplay of the scale anomaly, the renormalization group, and the origin of the strong scale, Lambda_{QCD}. I tell a story, then elaborate this concept, and for the sake of discussion, propose a conjecture that the physical world is scale invariant in the classical, \hbar -> 0, limit. This principle has implications for the dimensionality of space-time, the cosmological constant, the weak scale, and Planck scale.

Dimensional Deconstruction and Wess-Zumino-Witten Terms

A new technique is developed for the derivation of the Wess-Zumino-Witten terms of gauged chiral lagrangians. We start in D=5 with a pure (mesonless) Yang-Mills theory, which includes relevant gauge field Chern-Simons terms. The theory is then compactified, and the effective D=4 lagrangian is derived using lattice techniques, or ``deconstruction,'' where pseudoscalar mesons arise from the lattice Wilson links. This yields the WZW term with the correct Witten coefficient by way of a simple heuristic argument. We discover a novel WZW term for singlet currents, that yields the full Goldstone-Wilczek current, and a U(1) axial current for the skyrmion, with the appropriate anomaly structures. A more detailed analysis is presented of the dimensional compactification of Yang-Mills in D=5 into a gauged chiral lagrangian in D=4, heeding the consistency of the D=4 and D=5 Bianchi identities. These dictate a novel covariant derivative structure in the D=4 gauge theory, yielding a field strength modified by the addition of commutators of chiral currents. The Chern-Simons term of the pure D=5 Yang-Mills theory then devolves into the correct form of the Wess-Zumino-Witten term with an index (the analogue of N_{colors}=3) of N=D=5. The theory also has a Skyrme term with a fixed coefficient.

Chiral Multiplets of Heavy-Light Mesons

The recent discovery of a narrow resonance in D_s+pi^0 by the BABAR collaboration is consistent with the interpretation of a heavy J^P(0+,1+) spin multiplet. This system is the parity partner of the groundstate (0-,1-) multiplet, which we argue is required in the implementation of SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R chiral symmetry in heavy-light meson systems. The (0+,1+)->(0-,1-)+pi transition couplings satisfy a Goldberger-Treiman relation, g_pi = Delta(M)/f_pi, where Delta(M) is the mass gap. The BABAR resonance fits the 0+ state, with a kinematically blocked principal decay mode to D+K. The allowed D_s+pi, D_s+2pi and electromagnetic transitions are computed from the full chiral theory and found to be suppressed, consistent with the narrowness of the state. This state establishes the chiral mass difference for all such heavy-quark chiral multiplets, and precise predictions exist for the analogous B_s and strange doubly-heavy baryon states.

Geometrical Renormalization Groups: Perfect Deconstruction Actions

By combining two distinct renormalization group transformations, opposing scale transformations, we obtain a composite transformation which does not rescale the system, and drives it to a "geometrical" fixed point, controlling the effective geometry and locality. The latticized (deconstructed) action for an extra-dimensional field theory becomes a ``perfect action,'' with a linear ladder spectrum for N KK-modes.

Strong Dynamics and Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

The breaking of the electroweak symmetry, and origin of the associated ``weak scale,'' may be due to a new strong interaction. Theoretical developments over the past decade have led to viable models and mechanisms that are consistent with current experimental data. Many of these schemes feature a privileged role for the top quark, and third generation, and are natural in the context of theories of extra space dimensions at the weak scale. We review various models and their phenomenological implications which will be subject to definitive tests in future collider runs at the Tevatron, the LHC, and future linear electron-positron colliders, as well as sensitive studies of rare processes.
