Integrated Localization, Mapping, and Communication through VCSEL-Based Light-emitting RIS (LeRIS)

Light-emitting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (LeRISs) have recently emerged as a promising solution for providing the spatial awareness required for reliable millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication in programmable wireless environments (PWEs). However, existing LeRIS designs rely on the diffuse emission of light-emitting diodes, while LiDAR-assisted solutions require dedicated sensing modules that hinder their direct integration into RIS panels. In this paper, a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL)-based LeRIS framework is developed to jointly support user localization, obstacle-aware mapping, and mmWave communication. Specifically, the narrow Gaussian beams and multimode operation of VCSELs are exploited to derive closed-form schemes for the joint recovery of the user position and orientation from received signal strength measurements. According to the provided simulation results, is shown that five VCSELs are sufficient for unique recovery, while this requirement is reduced to three dual-mode VCSELs under specific geometric conditions. Furthermore, the position error bound (PEB) is derived to characterize the achievable localization accuracy, while reflected-signal time-of-arrival measurements are employed to identify obstructed links and enable blockage-resilient LeRIS routing. As a result, the proposed framework achieves cm-level localization accuracy, reliable obstacle detection, and substantial spectral-efficiency and minimum-user-rate gains, thereby establishing VCSEL-based LeRISs as a solution for spatially aware and resilient PWEs.

Non-Uniform Codebook Design for Optical IRS-Assisted VLC Systems

Optical intelligent reflecting surfaces (OIRS) can improve the coverage of indoor visible light communication (VLC) systems, however, practical deployment requires a finite offline codebook to avoid repeated real-time optimisation of mirror orientations. A uniform codebook with fixed angular steps does not provide uniform coverage on the user plane, because the mapping from steering angles to reflection locations on the user plane is nonlinear. To address this problem, this paper proposes a geometric-optics-based non-uniform codebook design for OIRS-assisted VLC systems. The proposed method constructs an individual codebook for each IRS element according to its geometric position, so that the reflected beams are distributed more uniformly over the user plane. The codebook accuracy is evaluated using the Frobenius norm of the channel error matrix. Simulation results show that the proposed design provides more uniform spatial mapping with fewer codewords than the uniform codebook, and that the sweep-angle resolution has a stronger effect on the codebook accuracy than the tilt-angle resolution.

Quantized Zero-Energy RIS: Residual Phase Modeling and Outage Analysis

Zero-energy reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (zeRISs) have recently emerged as a promising solution for enabling energy-efficient and scalable programmable wireless environments (PWEs) by harvesting their operational energy from impinging radio-frequency signals. However, the operation of zeRIS-assisted systems is inherently constrained by the coupling between energy harvesting and signal reflection, a dependency that becomes more intricate under practical hardware limitations such as finite-resolution phase control. In this paper, we develop a comprehensive analytical framework for zeRIS-assisted communication systems operating under quantized phase shifts and harvest-and-reflect (HaR) schemes. Specifically, we analyze the joint energy-data rate outage probability and the energy efficiency under time switching and element splitting schemes, considering both transmitter-side and user-side deployment scenarios. By explicitly modeling the residual phase error induced by quantization and incorporating its statistical properties into the analysis, we show that quantization jointly affects energy harvesting and signal reflection, thereby inducing non-trivial trade-offs. As a result, the presented framework enables accurate performance evaluation and reveals critical design trade-offs for the selection of the phase resolution, and the applied HaR scheme in zeRIS-assisted wireless networks.

Enabling mmWave Communications with VCSEL-Based Light-Emitting Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

This paper proposes a light-emitting reconfigurable intelligent surface (LeRIS) architecture that integrates vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) to jointly support user localization and mmWave communication. By leveraging the directional Gaussian beams and dual-mode diversity of VCSELs, we derive a closed-form method for estimating user position and orientation using only three VCSEL sources. These estimates are then used to configure LeRIS panels for directional mmWave beamforming, enabling optimized wave propagation in programmable wireless environments. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed system achieves millimeter-level localization accuracy and maintains high spectral efficiency. These findings establish VCSEL-integrated LeRIS as a scalable and multifunctional solution for future 6G programmable wireless environments.

A novel RF-enabled Non-Destructive Inspection Method through Machine Learning and Programmable Wireless Environments

Contemporary industrial Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI) methods require sensing capabilities that operate in occluded, hazardous, or access restricted environments. Yet, the current visual inspection based on optical cameras offers limited quality of service to that respect. In that sense, novel methods for workpiece inspection, suitable, for smart manufacturing are needed. Programmable Wireless Environments (PWE) could help towards that direction, by redefining the wireless Radio Frequency (RF) wave propagation as a controllable inspector entity. In this work, we propose a novel approach to Non-Destructive Inspection, leveraging an RF sensing pipeline based on RF wavefront encoding for retrieving workpiece-image entries from a designated database. This approach combines PWE-enabled RF wave manipulation with machine learning (ML) tools trained to produce visual outputs for quality inspection. Specifically, we establish correlation relationships between RF wavefronts and target industrial assets, hence yielding a dataset which links wavefronts to their corresponding images in a structured manner. Subsequently, a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) derives visual representations closely matching the database entries. Our results indicate that the proposed method achieves an SSIM 99.5% matching score in visual outputs, paving the way for next-generation quality control workflows in industry.

How Many Pinching Antennas Are Enough?

Programmable wireless environments (PWEs) have emerged as a key paradigm for next-generation communication networks, aiming to transform wireless propagation from an uncontrollable phenomenon into a reconfigurable process that can adapt to diverse service requirements. In this framework, pinching-antenna systems (PASs) have recently been proposed as a promising enabling technology, as they allow the radiation location and effective propagation distance to be adjusted by selectively exciting radiating points along a dielectric waveguide. However, most existing studies on PASs rely on the idealized assumption that pinching-antenna (PA) positions can be continuously adjusted along the waveguide, while realistically only a finite set of pinching locations is available. Motivated by this, this paper analyzes the performance of two-state PASs, where the PA positions are fixed and only their activation state can be controlled. By explicitly accounting for the spatial discreteness of the available pinching points, closed-form analytical expressions for the outage probability and the ergodic achievable data rate are derived. In addition, we introduce the pinching discretization efficiency to quantify the performance gap between discrete and continuous pinching configurations, enabling a direct assessment of the number of PAs required to approximate the ideal continuous case. Finally, numerical results validate the analytical framework and show that near-continuous performance can be achieved with a limited number of PAs, offering useful insights for the design and deployment of PASs in PWEs.

RIS-Assisted 3D Spherical Splatting for Object Composition Visualization using Detection Transformers

The pursuit of immersive and structurally aware multimedia experiences has intensified interest in sensing modalities that reconstruct objects beyond the limits of visible light. Conventional optical pipelines degrade under occlusion or low illumination, motivating the use of radio-frequency (RF) sensing, whose electromagnetic waves penetrate materials and encode both geometric and compositional information. Yet, uncontrolled multipath propagation restricts reconstruction accuracy. Recent advances in Programmable Wireless Environments (PWEs) mitigate this limitation by enabling software-defined manipulation of propagation through Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs), thereby providing controllable illumination diversity. Building on this capability, this work introduces a PWE-driven RF framework for three-dimensional object reconstruction using material-aware spherical primitives. The proposed approach combines RIS-enabled field synthesis with a Detection Transformer (DETR) that infers spatial and material parameters directly from extracted RF features. Simulation results confirm the framework's ability to approximate object geometries and classify material composition with an overall accuracy of 79.35%, marking an initial step toward programmable and physically grounded RF-based 3D object composition visualization.

Equivalent Circuit Modeling of a Lumped-element Loaded Metasurface under Arbitrary Incidence and Polarization

In this work we develop a simple equivalent circuit model (ECM) that predicts the spectral response of a lumped-element loaded single patterned layer reflective metasurface. The proposed ECM maintains accuracy across varying design parameters including dual-polarization, arbitrary obliquity and azimuthal rotation of incidence plane, as well as physical dimensions of the lumped elements. Our approach is built incrementally, starting from an elementary unit cell which is extended to a 2-by-2 arrangement that allows for multifunctionality and reconfigurability in both polarizations, independently. These capabilities facilitate the design of tunable holographic metasurfaces which can implement reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for advanced wireless communication systems. We evaluate the limitations and accuracy of the proposed ECM with full-wave simulations (FWS), which evidence robustness up to 45 degrees and thus highlight its aptitude as a rapid design tool or a guide for FWS-based optimization.

Performance Analysis of Pinching-Antenna Systems

The sixth generation of wireless networks envisions intelligent and adaptive environments capable of meeting the demands of emerging applications such as immersive extended reality, advanced healthcare, and the metaverse. However, this vision requires overcoming critical challenges, including the limitations of conventional wireless technologies in mitigating path loss and dynamically adapting to diverse user needs. Among the proposed reconfigurable technologies, pinching antenna systems (PASs) offer a novel way to turn path loss into a programmable parameter by using dielectric waveguides to minimize propagation losses at high frequencies. In this paper, we develop a comprehensive analytical framework that derives closed-form expressions for the outage probability and average rate of PASs while incorporating both free-space path loss and waveguide attenuation under realistic conditions. In addition, we characterize the optimal placement of pinching antennas to maximize performance under waveguide losses. Numerical results show the significant impact of waveguide losses on system performance, especially for longer waveguides, emphasizing the importance of accurate loss modeling. Despite these challenges, PASs consistently outperform conventional systems in terms of reliability and data rate, underscoring their potential to enable high-performance programmable wireless environments.

Location-Driven Programmable Wireless Environments through Light-emitting RIS (LeRIS)

As 6G wireless networks seek to enable robust and dynamic programmable wireless environments (PWEs), reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a cornerstone for controlling electromagnetic wave propagation. However, realizing the potential of RISs for demanding PWE applications depends on precise and real-time user localization, especially in scenarios with random receiver orientations and inherent hardware imperfections. To address this challenge, we propose a novel optical localization framework that integrates conventional ceiling-mounted LEDs with light-emitting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (LeRISs). By leveraging the spatial diversity offered by the LeRIS architecture, the framework introduces robust signal paths that improve localization accuracy and reduce errors under varying orientations. To this end, we derive a system of equations for received signal strength-based localization that accounts for random receiver orientations and imposes spatial constraints on LED placement, ensuring unique and reliable solutions. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves precise beam control and high spectral efficiency even for RISs with large number of reflecting elements, establishing our solution as scalable and adaptive for PWEs that require real-time accuracy and flexibility.

Empowering Programmable Wireless Environments with Optical Anchor-based Positioning

The evolution toward sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks has introduced programmable wireless environments (PWEs) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) as transformative elements for achieving near-deterministic wireless communications. However, the enhanced capabilities of RISs within PWEs, especially as we move toward more complex electromagnetic functions by increasing the number of reflecting elements, underscore the need for high-precision user localization, since inaccurate localization could lead to erroneous configuration of RISs, which would then compromise the effectiveness of PWEs. In this direction, this paper investigates the integration of RISs and optical anchors within PWEs, emphasizing the crucial role of ultra-precise localization in unlocking advanced electromagnetic functionalities. Specifically, we present an in-depth analysis of various localization techniques, both RISbased and RIS-independent, while introducing the concept of empowering PWEs with optical anchors for enhanced localization precision. Our findings highlight that accurate localization is essential to fully exploit the capabilities of RISs, paving the way for future applications. Through this exploration, we contribute to the advancement of PWEs in line with the ambitious goals of the 6G standards and improve the quality of service in next generation wireless networks.

Zero-Energy Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (zeRIS)

A primary objective of the forthcoming sixth generation (6G) of wireless networking is to support demanding applications, while ensuring energy efficiency. Programmable wireless environments (PWEs) have emerged as a promising solution, leveraging reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), to control wireless propagation and deliver exceptional quality-ofservice. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a network supported by zero-energy RISs (zeRISs), which harvest energy for their operation and contribute to the realization of PWEs. Specifically, we investigate joint energy-data rate outage probability and the energy efficiency of a zeRIS-assisted communication system by employing three harvest-and-reflect (HaR) methods, i) power splitting, ii) time switching, and iii) element splitting. Furthermore, we consider two zeRIS deployment strategies, namely BS-side zeRIS and UE-side zeRIS. Simulation results validate the provided analysis and examine which HaR method performs better depending on the zeRIS placement. Finally, valuable insights and conclusions for the performance of zeRISassisted wireless networks are drawn from the presented results.

Energy-aware Trajectory Optimization for UAV-mounted RIS and Full-duplex Relay

In the evolving landscape of sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as transformative tools for dynamic and adaptive connectivity. However, dynamically adjusting their position to offer favorable communication channels introduces operational challenges in terms of energy consumption, especially when integrating advanced communication technologies like reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and full-duplex relays (FDRs). To this end, by recognizing the pivotal role of UAV mobility, the paper introduces an energy-aware trajectory design for UAV-mounted RISs and UAV-mounted FDRs using the decode and forward (DF) protocol, aiming to maximize the network minimum rate and enhance user fairness, while taking into consideration the available on-board energy. Specifically, this work highlights their distinct energy consumption characteristics and their associated integration challenges by developing appropriate energy consumption models for both UAV-mounted RISs and FDRs that capture the intricate relationship between key factors such as weight, and their operational characteristics. Furthermore, a joint time-division multiple access (TDMA) user scheduling-UAV trajectory optimization problem is formulated, considering the power dynamics of both systems, while assuring that the UAV energy is not depleted mid-air. Finally, simulation results underscore the importance of energy considerations in determining the optimal trajectory and scheduling and provide insights into the performance comparison of UAV-mounted RISs and FDRs in UAV-assisted wireless networks.

On the Distribution of the Sum of Double-Nakagami-m Random Vectors and Application in Randomly Reconfigurable Surfaces

Meta-surfaces intend to improve significantly the performance of future wireless networks by controlling the wireless propagation and shaping the radio waves according to the generalized Snell's law. A recent application of meta-surfaces is reconfigurable intelligent surfaces which are practically limited by the requirement for perfect knowledge of the user's position. For the case where the user's position cannot be obtained, we introduce randomly reconfigurable surfaces (RRSs) aiming to diffuse the incoming wave. A RRS is defined as a reconfigurable meta-surface that each of its elements induces a randomly selected time-variant phase shift on the reflected signal. To facilitate the performance analysis of a RRS-assisted system, first, we present novel closed-form expressions for the probability density function, the cumulative distribution function, the moments, and the characteristic function of the distribution of the sum of double-Nakagami-m random vectors, whose amplitudes follow the double-Nakagami-m distribution, i.e., the distribution of the product of two Nakagami-m random variables, and phases follow the circular uniform distribution. We also consider a special case of this distribution, namely the distribution of the sum of Rayleigh-Nakagami-m random vectors. Then, we exploit these expressions to investigate the performance of the RRS-assisted composite channel, assuming that the two links undergo Nakagami-m fading and the equivalent phase follows the circular uniform distribution. Closed-form expressions for the outage probability, the average received signal-to-noise ratio, the ergodic capacity, the bit error probability, the amount of fading, and the channel quality estimation index are provided to evaluate the performance of the considered system. These metrics are also derived for the practical special case where one of the two links undergoes Rayleigh fading.
