Revisiting generic mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^3$

Bamler--Kleiner recently proved a multiplicity-one theorem for mean curvature flow in R^3 and combined it with the authors' work on generic mean curvature flows to fully resolve Huisken's genericity conjecture. In this paper we show that a short density-drop theorem plus the Bamler--Kleiner multiplicity-one theorem for tangent flows at the first nongeneric singular time suffice to resolve Huisken's conjecture -- without relying on the strict genus drop theorem for one-sided ancient flows previously established by the authors.

Generic regularity for minimizing hypersurfaces in dimension 11

We prove that area-minimizing hypersurfaces are generically smooth in ambient dimension $11$ in the context of the Plateau problem and of area minimization in integral homology. For higher ambient dimensions, $n+1 \geq 12$, we prove in the same two contexts that area-minimizing hypersurfaces have at most an $n-10-ε_n$ dimensional singular set after an arbitrarily $C^\infty$-small perturbation of the Plateau boundary or the ambient Riemannian metric, respectively.

Almgren's Three-Legged Starfish

In this note we use classical tools from min-max and hyperbolic geometry to substantiate a folklore example in Almgren--Pitts min-max theory, the three-legged starfish metric on a 2-sphere, whose systolic length, Almgren--Pitts width, and Gromov--Guth width are attained by ``figure-eight'' geodesics. We also recover a hyperbolic geometry fact about ``figure-eight'' geodesics using min-max.

Mean curvature flow with generic low-entropy initial data II

We prove that the mean curvature flow of a generic closed embedded hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^4$ or $\mathbb{R}^5$ with entropy $\leq 2$, or with entropy $\leq λ(\mathbb{S}^1)$ if in $\mathbb{R}^6$, encounters only generic singularities.

Improved generic regularity of codimension-1 minimizing integral currents

Let $Γ$ be a smooth, closed, oriented, $(n-1)$-dimensional submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. We show that there exist arbitrarily small perturbations $Γ'$ of $Γ$ with the property that minimizing integral $n$-currents with boundary $Γ'$ are smooth away from a set of Hausdorff dimension $\leq n-9-\varepsilon_n$, where $\varepsilon_n \in (0, 1]$ is a dimensional constant. This improves on our previous result (where we proved generic smoothness of minimizers in $9$ and $10$ ambient dimensions). The key ingredients developed here are a new method to estimate the full singular set of the foliation by minimizers and a proof of superlinear decay of closeness (near singular points) that holds even across non-conical scales.

Mean curvature flow with generic initial data

We show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ avoids asymptotically conical and non-spherical compact singularities. We also show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed low-entropy hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ is smooth until it disappears in a round point. The main technical ingredient is a long-time existence and uniqueness result for ancient mean curvature flows that lie on one side of asymptotically conical or compact shrinking solitons.

Decomposing 4-manifolds with positive scalar curvature

We show that every closed, oriented, topologically PSC 4-manifold can be obtained via 0 and 1-surgeries from a topologically PSC 4-orbifold with vanishing first Betti number and second Betti number at most as large as the original one.

Mean curvature flow with generic low-entropy initial data

We prove that sufficiently low-entropy closed hypersurfaces can be perturbed so that their mean curvature flow encounters only spherical and cylindrical singularities. Our theorem applies to all closed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with entropy $\leq 2$ and to all closed hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with entropy $\leq λ(\mathbb{S}^1 \times \mathbb{R}^2)$. When combined with recent work of Daniels-Holgate, this strengthens Bernstein-Wang's low-entropy Schoenflies-type theorem by relaxing the entropy bound to $λ(\mathbb{S}^1 \times \mathbb{R}^2)$. Our techniques, based on a novel density drop argument, also lead to a new proof of generic regularity result for area-minimizing hypersurfaces in eight dimensions (due to Hardt-Simon and Smale).

The p-widths of a surface

The $p$-widths of a closed Riemannian manifold are a nonlinear analogue of the spectrum of its Laplace--Beltrami operator, which corresponds to areas of a certain min-max sequence of possibly singular minimal submanifolds. We show that the $p$-widths of any closed Riemannian two-manifold correspond to a union of closed immersed geodesics, rather than simply geodesic nets. We then prove optimality of the sweepouts of the round two-sphere constructed from the zero set of homogeneous polynomials, showing that the $p$-widths of the round sphere are attained by $\lfloor \sqrt{p}\rfloor$ great circles. As a result, we find the universal constant in the Liokumovich--Marques--Neves--Weyl law for surfaces to be $\sqrtπ$. En route to calculating the $p$-widths of the round two-sphere, we prove two additional new results: a bumpy metrics theorem for stationary geodesic nets with fixed edge lengths, and that, generically, stationary geodesic nets with bounded mass and bounded singular set have Lusternik--Schnirelmann category zero.

Metrics with $λ_1(-Δ+ k R) \geq 0$ and flexibility in the Riemannian Penrose Inequality

On a closed manifold, consider the space of all Riemannian metrics for which -Delta + kR is positive (nonnegative) definite, where k > 0 and R is the scalar curvature. This spectral generalization of positive (nonnegative) scalar curvature arises naturally for different values of k in the study of scalar curvature via minimal hypersurfaces, the Yamabe problem, and Perelman's Ricci flow with surgery. When k=1/2, the space models apparent horizons in time-symmetric initial data to the Einstein equations. We study these spaces in unison and generalize Codá Marques's path-connectedness theorem. Applying this with k=1/2, we compute the Bartnik mass of 3-dimensional apparent horizons and the Bartnik--Bray mass of their outer-minimizing generalizations in all dimensions. Our methods also yield efficient constructions for the scalar-nonnegative fill-in problem.

Variational aspects of phase transitions with prescribed mean curvature

We study the spectrum of phase transitions with prescribed mean curvature in Riemannian manifolds. These phase transitions are solutions to an inhomogeneous semilinear elliptic PDE that give rise to diffuse objects (varifolds) that limit to hypersurfaces, possibly with singularities, whose mean curvature is determined by the "prescribed mean curvature" function and the limiting multiplicity. We establish upper bounds for the eigenvalues of the diffuse problem, as well as the more subtle lower bounds when the diffuse problem converges with multiplicity one. For the latter, we also establish asymptotics that are sharp to order $o(\varepsilon^2)$ and $C^{2,α}$ estimates on multiplicity-one phase transition layers.

Ancient gradient flows of elliptic functionals and Morse index

We study closed ancient solutions to gradient flows of elliptic functionals in Riemannian manifolds, including mean curvature flow and harmonic map heat flow. Our work has various consequences. In all dimensions and codimensions, we classify ancient mean curvature flows in S^n with low area: they are steady or shrinking equatorial spheres. In the mean curvature flow case in S^3, we classify ancient flows with more relaxed area bounds: they are steady or shrinking equators or Clifford tori. In the embedded curve shortening case in S^2, we completely classify ancient flows of bounded length: they are steady or shrinking circles.

Capacity, quasi-local mass, and singular fill-ins

We derive new inequalities between the boundary capacity of an asymptotically flat 3-manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature and boundary quantities that relate to quasi-local mass; one relates to Brown--York mass and the other is new. We argue by recasting the setup to the study of mean-convex fill-ins with nonnegative scalar curvature and, in the process, we consider fill-ins with singular metrics, which may have independent interest. Among other things, our work yields new variational characterizations of Riemannian Schwarzschild manifolds and new comparison results for surfaces in them.

Allen-Cahn min-max on surfaces

We use a min-max procedure on the Allen-Cahn energy functional to construct geodesics on closed, 2-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, as motivated by the work of Guaraco. Borrowing classical blowup and curvature estimates from geometric analysis, as well as novel Allen-Cahn curvature estimates due to Wang-Wei, we manage to study the fine structure of potential singular points at the diffuse level, and show that the problem reduces to that of understanding "entire" singularity models constructed by del Pino-Kowalczyk-Pacard with Morse index 1. The argument is completed by a Morse index estimate on these singularity models.

Minimal surfaces and the Allen-Cahn equation on 3-manifolds: index, multiplicity, and curvature estimates

The Allen-Cahn equation is a semilinear PDE which is deeply linked to the theory of minimal hypersurfaces via a singular limit. We prove curvature estimates and strong sheet separation estimates for stable solutions (building on recent work of Wang-Wei) of the Allen-Cahn equation on a 3-manifold. Using these, we are able to show for generic metrics on a 3-manifold, minimal surfaces arising from Allen-Cahn solutions with bounded energy and bounded Morse index are two-sided and occur with multiplicity one and the expected Morse index. This confirms, in the Allen-Cahn setting, a strong form of the multiplicity one conjecture and the index lower bound conjecture of Marques-Neves in 3-dimensions regarding min-max constructions of minimal surfaces. Allen-Cahn min-max constructions were recently carried out by Guaraco and Gaspar-Guaraco. Our resolution of the multiplicity one and the index lower bound conjectures shows that these constructions can be applied to give a new proof of Yau's conjecture on infinitely many minimal surfaces in a 3-manifold with a generic metric (recently proven by Irie-Marques-Neves) with new geometric conclusions. Namely, we prove that a 3-manifold with a generic metric contains, for every $p$ = 1, 2, 3, ..., a two-sided embedded minimal surface with Morse index $p$ and area $p^{1/3}$, as conjectured by Marques-Neves.
