Charge-induced conformational changes of dendrimers

We study the effect of chargeable monomers on the conformation of dendrimers of low generation by computer simulations, employing bare Coulomb interactions. The presence of the latter leads to an increase in size of the dendrimer due to a combined effect of electrostatic repulsion and the presence of counterions within the dendrimer, and also enhances a shell-like structure for the monomers of different generations. In the resulting structures the bond-length between monomers, especially near the center, will increase to facilitate a more effective usage of space in the outer-regions of the dendrimer.

Colloidal crystal growth at externally imposed nucleation clusters

We study the conditions under which and how an imposed cluster of fixed colloidal particles at prescribed positions triggers crystal nucleation from a metastable colloidal fluid. Dynamical density functional theory of freezing and Brownian dynamics simulations are applied to a two-dimensional colloidal system with dipolar interactions. The externally imposed nucleation clusters involve colloidal particles either on a rhombic lattice or along two linear arrays separated by a gap. Crystal growth occurs after the peaks of the nucleation cluster have first relaxed to a cutout of the stable bulk crystal.

Genetic algorithms predict formation of exotic ordered configurations for two-component dipolar monolayers

We employ genetic algorithms (GA), which allow for an unbiased search for the global minimum of energy landscapes, to identify the ordered equilibrium configurations formed by binary dipolar systems confined on a plane. A large variety of arrangements is identified, the complexity of which grows with increasing asymmetry between the two components and with growing concentration of the small particles. The effects of the density are briefly discussed and a comparison with results obtained via conventional lattice-sum minimization is presented. Our results can be confirmed by experiments involving Langmuir monolayers of polystyrene dipolar spheres or super-para-magnetic colloids confined on the air-water interface and polarized by an external, perpendicular magnetic field.

Polyelectrolyte-Compression Forces between Spherical DNA Brushes

Optical tweezers are employed to measure the forces of interaction within a single pair of DNA-grafted colloids in dependence of the molecular weight of the DNA-chains, and the concentration and valence of the surrounding ionic medium. The resulting forces are short-range and set in as the surface-to-surface distance between the colloidal cores reaches the value of the brush height. The measured force-distance dependence is analyzed by means of a theoretical treatment based on the compression of the chains on the surface of the opposite-lying colloid. Quantitative agreement with the experiment is obtained for all parameter combinations.

Computer Assembly of Cluster-Forming Amphiphilic Dendrimers

Recent theoretical studies have predicted a new clustering mechanism for soft matter particles that interact via a certain kind of purely repulsive, bounded potentials. At sufficiently high densities, clusters of overlapping particles are formed in the fluid, which upon further compression crystallize into cubic lattices with density-independent lattice constants. In this work we show that amphiphilic dendrimers are suitable colloids for the experimental realization of this phenomenon. Thereby, we pave the way for the synthesis of such macromolecules, which form the basis for a novel class of materials with unusual properties.

Diffusion and Relaxation Dynamics in Cluster Crystals

For a large class of fluids exhibiting ultrasoft bounded pair potentials, particles form crystals consisting of clusters located in the lattice sites, with a density-independent lattice constant. Here we present an investigation on the dynamic features of a representative example of this class. It is found that particles can diffuse between lattice sites, maintaining the lattice structure, through an activated hopping mechanism. This feature yields finite values for the diffusivity and full relaxation of density correlation functions. Simulations suggest the existence of a localization transition which is avoided by hopping, and a dynamic decoupling between self- and collective correlations.

Why do ultrasoft repulsive particles cluster and crystallize? Analytical results from density functional theory

We demonstrate the accuracy of the hypernetted chain closure and of the mean-field approximation for the calculation of the fluid-state properties of systems interacting by means of bounded and positive-definite pair potentials with oscillating Fourier transforms. Subsequently, we prove the validity of a bilinear, random-phase density functional for arbitrary inhomogeneous phases of the same systems. On the basis of this functional, we calculate analytically the freezing parameters of the latter. We demonstrate explicitly that the stable crystals feature a lattice constant that is independent of density and whose value is dictated by the position of the negative minimum of the Fourier transform of the pair potential. This property is equivalent with the existence of clusters, whose population scales proportionally to the density. We establish that regardless of the form of the interaction potential and of the location on the freezing line, all cluster crystals have a universal Lindemann ratio L = 0.189 at freezing. We further make an explicit link between the aforementioned density functional and the harmonic theory of crystals. This allows us to establish an equivalence between the emergence of clusters and the existence of negative Fourier components of the interaction potential. Finally, we make a connection between the class of models at hand and the system of infinite-dimensional hard spheres, when the limits of interaction steepness and space dimension are both taken to infinity in a particularly described fashion.

Polyelectrolyte stars in planar confinement

We employ monomer-resolved Molecular Dynamics simulations and theoretical considerations to analyze the conformations of multiarm polyelectrolyte stars close to planar, uncharged walls. We identify three mechanisms that contribute to the emergence of a repulsive star-wall force, namely: the confinement of the counterions that are trapped in the star interior, the increase in electrostatic energy due to confinement as well as a novel mechanism arising from the compression of the stiff polyelectrolyte rods approaching the wall. The latter is not present in the case of interaction between two polyelectrolyte stars and is a direct consequence of the impenetrable character of the planar wall.

Density functional theory of freezing for soft interactions in two dimensions

A density functional theory of two-dimensional freezing is presented for a soft interaction potential that scales as inverse cube of particle distance. This repulsive potential between parallel, induced dipoles is realized for paramagnetic colloids on an interface, which are additionally exposed to an external magnetic field. An extended modified weighted density approximation which includes correct triplet correlations in the liquid state is used. The theoretical prediction of the freezing transition is in good agreement with experimental and simulation data.

Partial Clustering in Binary Two-Dimensional Colloidal Suspensions

Strongly interacting binary mixtures of superparamagnetic colloidal particles confined to a two-dimensional water-air interface are examined by theory, computer simulation and experiment. The mixture exhibits a partial clustering in equilibrium: in the voids of the matrix of unclustered big particles, the small particles form subclusters with a sponge-like topology which is accompanied by a characteristic small-wave vector peak in the small-small structure factor. This partial clustering is a general phenomenon occurring for strongly coupled negatively non-additive mixtures.

Collapse of Telechelic Star Polymers to Water-Melon Structures

Conformational properties of star-shaped polymer aggregates that carry attractive end-groups, called telechelic star polymers, are investigated by simulation and analytical variational theory. We focus on the case of low telechelic star polymer functionalities, $f \leq 5$, a condition which allows aggregation of all attractive monomers on one site. We establish the functionality- and polymerization-number dependence of the transition temperature from the "star burst'' to the "water melon" macroparticle structure. Extensions to telechelic stars featuring partially collapsed configurations are also discussed.

Formation of Polymorphic Cluster Phases for Purely Repulsive Soft Spheres

We present results from density functional theory and computer simulations that unambiguously predict the occurrence of first-order freezing transitions for a large class of ultrasoft model systems into cluster crystals. The clusters consist of fully overlapping particles and arise without the existence of attractive forces. The number of particles participating in a cluster scales linearly with density, therefore the crystals feature density-independent lattice constants. Clustering is accompanied by polymorphic bcc-fcc transitions, with fcc being the stable phase at high densities.

Equilibrium properties of highly asymmetric star-polymer mixtures

We employ effective interaction potentials to study the equilibrium structure and phase behavior of highly asymmetric mixtures of star polymers. We consider in particular the influence of the addition of a component with a small number of arms and a small size on a concentrated solution of large stars with a high functionality. By employing liquid integral equation theories we examine the evolution of the correlation functions of the big stars upon addition of the small ones, finding a loss of structure that can be attributed to a weakening of the repulsions between the large stars due to the presence of the small ones. We analyze this phenomenon be means of a generalized depletion mechanism which is supported by computer simulations. By applying thermodynamic perturbation theory we draw the phase diagram of the asymmetric mixture, finding that the addition of small stars melts the crystal formed by the big ones. A systematic comparison between the two- and effective one-component descriptions of the mixture that corroborates the reliability of the generalized depletion picture is also carried out.

Soft effective interactions between weakly charged polyelectrolyte chains

We apply extensive Molecular Dynamics simulations and analytical considerations in order to study the conformations and the effective interactions between weakly charged, flexible polyelectrolyte chains in salt-free conditions. We focus on charging fractions lying below 20%, for which case there is no Manning condensation of counterions and the latter can be thus partitioned in two states: those that are trapped within the region of the flexible chain and the ones that are free in the solution. We examine the partition of counterions in these two states, the chain sizes and the monomer distributions for various chain lengths, finding that the monomer density follows a Gaussian shape. We calculate the effective interaction between the centers of mass of two interacting chains, under the assumption that the chains can be modeled as two overlapping Gaussian charge profiles. The analytical calculations are compared with measurements from Molecular Dynamics simulations. Good quantitative agreement is found for charging fractions below 10%, where the chains assume coil-like configurations, whereas deviations develop for charge fraction of 20%, in which case a conformational transition of the chain towards a rodlike configuration starts to take place.

Polydisperse star polymer solutions

We analyze the effect of polydispersity in the arm number on the effective interactions, structural correlations and the phase behavior of star polymers in a good solvent. The effective interaction potential between two star polymers with different arm numbers is derived using scaling theory. The resulting expression is tested against monomer-resolved molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the theoretical pair potential is in agreement with the simulation data in a much wider polydispersity range than other proposed potentials. We then use this pair potential as an input in a many-body theory to investigate polydispersity effects on the structural correlations and the phase diagram of dense star polymer solutions. In particular we find that a polydispersity of 10%, which is typical in experimental samples, does not significantly alter previous findings for the phase diagram of monodisperse solutions.

Triplet forces between star polymers

We analyze the effective triplet interactions between the centers of star polymers in a good solvent. Using an analytical short distance expansion inspired by scaling theory, we deduce that the triplet part of the three-star force is attractive but only 11% of the pairwise part even for a close approach of three star polymers. We have also performed extensive computer simulations for different arm numbers to extract the effective triplet force. The simulation data show good correspondence with the theoretical predictions. Our results justify the effective pair potential picture even beyond the star polymer overlap concentration.

Colloids with polymer stars: The interaction

We derive the short distance interaction of star polymers in a colloidal solution. We calculate the corresponding force between two stars with arbitrary numbers of legs f_1 and f_2. We show that a simple scaling theory originally derived for high f_1, f_2 nicely matches with the results of elaborated renormalization group analysis for f_1 + f_2 =< 6 generalizing and confirming a previous conjecture based only on scaling results for f_1=f_2=1,2.
