Interface layer of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

This paper deals with the study of the behaviour of the wave functions of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate near the interface, in the case of strong segregation. This yields a system of two coupled ODE's for which we want to have estimates on the asymptotic behaviour, as the strength of the coupling tends to infinity. As in phase separation models, the leading order profile is a hyperbolic tangent. We construct an approximate solution and use the properties of the associated linearized operator to perturb it into a genuine solution for which we have an asymptotic expansion. We prove that the constructed heteroclinic solutions are linearly nondegenerate, in the natural sense, and that there is a spectral gap, independent of the large interaction parameter, between the zero eigenvalue (due to translations) at the bottom of the spectrum and the rest of the spectrum. Moreover, we prove a uniqueness result which implies that, in fact, the constructed heteroclinic is the unique minimizer (modulo translations) of the associated energy, for which we provide an expansion.

Remarks on the interface layer of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

We consider the heteroclinic connection problem for a class of Hamiltonian systems, containing a large competition parameter, which arise in the study of the behaviour of the wave functions of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate near the interface, in the case of segregation. This problem was studied in detail recently in arXiv:1509.08328 under a symmetry assumption. Here, we extend the approach of the latter paper to the nonsymmetric case, to recover essentially the same result. Moreover, we establish a uniqueness result for such solutions.

Analysis of an irregular boundary layer behavior for the steady state flow of a Boussinesq fluid

Using a perturbation approach, we make rigorous the formal boundary layer asymptotic analysis of Turcotte, Spence and Bau from the early eighties for the vertical flow of an internally heated Boussinesq fluid in a vertical channel with viscous dissipation and pressure work. A key point in our proof is to establish the non-degeneracy of a special solution of the Painlevé-I transcendent. To this end, we relate this problem to recent studies for the ground states of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in an annulus. We also relate our result to a particular case of the well known Lazer-McKenna conjecture from nonlinear analysis.

On the confinement of bounded entire solutions to a class of semilinear elliptic systems

Under appropriate assumptions, we show that all bounded entire solutions to a class of semilinear elliptic systems are confined in a convex domain. Moreover, we prove a Liouville type theorem in the case where the domain is strictly convex. Our result represents an extension, under less regularity assumptions, of a recent result of Smyrnelis. We also provide several applications.

On the existence of dark solitons of the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with periodic inhomogeneous nonlinearity

We provide a simple proof of the existence of dark solitons of the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with periodic inhomogeneous nonlinearity. Moreover, our proof allows for a broader class of inhomogeneities and gives some new properties of the solutions. We also apply our approach to the defocusing cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a periodic potential.

On the growth of the energy of entire solutions to the vector Allen-Cahn equation

We prove that the energy over balls of entire, nonconstant, bounded solutions to the vector Allen-Cahn equation grows faster than $(\ln R)^k R^{n-2}$, for any $k>0$, as the volume $R^n$ of the ball tends to infinity. This improves the growth rate of order $R^{n-2}$ that follows from the general weak monotonicity formula. Moreover, our estimate can be considered as an approximation to the corresponding rate of order $R^{n-1}$ that is known to hold in the scalar case.

Energy estimates for minimizers to a class of elliptic systems of Allen-Cahn type and the Liouville property

We prove a theorem for the growth of the energy of bounded, globally minimizing solutions to a class of semilinear elliptic systems of the form $Δu=\nabla W(u)$, $x\in \mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 2$, with $W:\mathbb{R}^m\to \mathbb{R}$, $m\geq 1$, nonnegative and vanishing at exactly one point (at least in the closure of the image of the considered solution $u$). As an application, we can prove a Liouville type theorem under various assumptions.

Thomas-Fermi approximation for coexisting two component Bose-Einstein condensates and nonexistence of vortices for small rotation

We study minimizers of a Gross--Pitaevskii energy describing a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a radially symmetric harmonic trap and set into rotation. We consider the case of coexistence of the components in the Thomas-Fermi regime, where a small parameter $\ep$ conveys a singular perturbation. The minimizer of the energy without rotation is determined as the positive solution of a system of coupled PDE's for which we show uniqueness. The limiting problem for $\ep =0$ has degenerate and irregular behavior at specific radii, where the gradient blows up. By means of a perturbation argument, we obtain precise estimates for the convergence of the minimizer to this limiting profile, as $\ep$ tends to 0. For low rotation, based on these estimates, we can show that the ground states remain real valued and do not have vortices, even in the region of small density.

Uniform estimates for positive solutions of semilinear elliptic equations and related Liouville and one-dimensional symmetry results

We consider a semilinear elliptic equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions in a smooth, possibly unbounded, domain. Under suitable assumptions, we deduce a condition on the size of the domain that implies the existence of a positive solution satisfying a uniform pointwise estimate. Here, uniform means that the estimate is independent of the domain. The main advantage of our approach is that it allows us to remove a restrictive monotonicity assumption that was imposed in the recent paper. In addition, we can remove a non-degeneracy condition that was assumed in the latter reference. Furthermore, we can generalize an old result, concerning semilinear elliptic nonlinear eigenvalue problems. Moreover, we study the boundary layer of global minimizers of the corresponding singular perturbation problem. For the above applications, our approach is based on a refinement of a result, concerning the behavior of global minimizers of the associated energy over large balls, subject to Dirichlet conditions. Combining this refinement with global bifurcation theory and the sliding method, we can prove uniform estimates for solutions away from their nodal set. Combining our approach with a-priori estimates that we obtain by blow-up, a doubling lemma, and known Liouville type theorems, we can give a new proof of a known Liouville type theorem without using boundary blow-up solutions. We can also provide an alternative proof, and a useful extension, of a Liouville theorem, involving the presence of an obstacle. Making use of the latter extension, we consider the singular perturbation problem with mixed boundary conditions. Moreover, we prove some new one-dimensional symmetry and rigidity properties of certain entire solutions to Allen-Cahn type equations, as well as in half spaces, convex cylindrical domains. In particular, we provide a new proof of Gibbons' conjecture in two dimensions.

The ground state of a Gross-Pitaevskii energy with general potential in the Thomas-Fermi limit

We study the ground state which minimizes a Gross-Pitaevskii energy with general non-radial trapping potential, under the unit mass constraint, in the Thomas-Fermi limit where a small parameter tends to 0. This ground state plays an important role in the mathematical treatment of recent experiments on the phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation, and in the study of various types of solutions of nonhomogeneous defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equations. Many of these applications require delicate estimates for the behavior of the ground state near the boundary of the condensate, as the singular parameter tends to zero, in the vicinity of which the ground state has irregular behavior in the form of a steep corner layer. In particular, the role of this layer is important in order to detect the presence of vortices in the small density region of the condensate, understand the superfluid flow around an obstacle, and also has a leading order contribution in the energy. In contrast to previous approaches, we utilize a perturbation argument to go beyond the classical Thomas-Fermi approximation and accurately approximate the layer by the Hastings-McLeod solution of the Painleve-II equation. This settles an open problem, answered very recently only for the special case of the model harmonic potential. In fact, we even improve upon previous results that relied heavily on the radial symmetry of the potential trap. Moreover, we show that the ground state has the maximal regularity available, namely it remains uniformly bounded in the 1/2-Holder norm, which is the exact Holder regularity of the singular limit profile, as the singular parameter tends to zero. Our study is highly motivated by an interesting open problem posed recently by Aftalion, Jerrard, and Royo-Letelier, and an open question of Gallo and Pelinovsky, concerning the removal of the radial symmetry assumption from the potential trap.
