Closed-form Approximation for Performance Bound of Finite Blocklength Massive MIMO Transmission

Ultra-reliable low latency communications (uRLLC) is adopted in the fifth generation (5G) mobile networks to better support mission-critical applications that demand high level of reliability and low latency. With the aid of well-established multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) information theory, uRLLC in the future 6G is expected to provide enhanced capability towards extreme connectivity. Since the latency constraint can be represented equivalently by blocklength, channel coding theory at finite block-length plays an important role in the theoretic analysis of uRLLC. On the basis of Polyanskiy's and Yang's asymptotic results, we first derive the exact close-form expressions for the expectation and variance of channel dispersion. Then, the bound of average maximal achievable rate is given for massive MIMO systems in ideal independent and identically distributed fading channels. This is the study to reveal the underlying connections among the fundamental parameters in MIMO transmissions in a concise and complete close-form formula. Most importantly, the inversely proportional law observed therein implies that the latency can be further reduced at expense of spatial degrees of freedom.

High-Throughput Flexible Belief Propagation List Decoder for Polar Codes

Owing to its high parallelism, belief propagation (BP) decoding is highly amenable to high-throughput implementations and thus represents a promising solution for meeting the ultra-high peak data rate of future communication systems. However, for polar codes, the error-correcting performance of BP decoding is far inferior to that of the widely used CRC-aided successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding algorithm. To close the performance gap to SCL, BP list (BPL) decoding expands the exploration of candidate codewords through multiple permuted factor graphs (PFGs). From an implementation perspective, designing a unified and flexible hardware architecture for BPL decoding that supports various PFGs and code configurations presents a big challenge. In this paper, we propose the first hardware implementation of a BPL decoder for polar codes and overcome the implementation challenge by applying a hardware-friendly algorithm that generates flexible permutations on-the-fly. First, we derive the graph selection gain and provide a sequential generation (SG) algorithm to obtain a near-optimal PFG set. We further prove that any permutation can be decomposed into a combination of multiple fixed routings, and we design a low-complexity permutation network to satisfy the decoding schedule. Our BPL decoder not only has a low decoding latency by executing the decoding and permutation generation in parallel, but also supports an arbitrary list size without any area overhead. Experimental results show that, for length-1024 polar codes with a code rate of one-half, our BPL decoder with 32 PFGs has a similar error-correcting performance to SCL with a list size of 4 and achieves a throughput of 25.63 Gbps and an area efficiency of 29.46 Gbps/mm$^{2}$ at SNR=4.0dB, which is 1.82$\times$ and 4.33$\times$ faster than the state-of-the-art BP flip and SCL decoders,~respectively

Bridging the Emotional Semantic Gap via Multimodal Relevance Estimation

Human beings have rich ways of emotional expressions, including facial action, voice, and natural languages. Due to the diversity and complexity of different individuals, the emotions expressed by various modalities may be semantically irrelevant. Directly fusing information from different modalities may inevitably make the model subject to the noise from semantically irrelevant modalities. To tackle this problem, we propose a multimodal relevance estimation network to capture the relevant semantics among modalities in multimodal emotions. Specifically, we take advantage of an attention mechanism to reflect the semantic relevance weights of each modality. Moreover, we propose a relevant semantic estimation loss to weakly supervise the semantics of each modality. Furthermore, we make use of contrastive learning to optimize the similarity of category-level modality-relevant semantics across different modalities in feature space, thereby bridging the semantic gap between heterogeneous modalities. In order to better reflect the emotional state in the real interactive scenarios and perform the semantic relevance analysis, we collect a single-label discrete multimodal emotion dataset named SDME, which enables researchers to conduct multimodal semantic relevance research with large category bias. Experiments on continuous and discrete emotion datasets show that our model can effectively capture the relevant semantics, especially for the large deviations in modal semantics. The code and SDME dataset will be publicly available.

Non-interactive Multi-client Searchable Symmetric Encryption with Small Client Storage

Considerable attention has been paid to dynamic searchable symmetric encryption (DSSE) which allows users to search on dynamically updated encrypted databases. To improve the performance of real-world applications, recent non-interactive multi-client DSSE schemes are targeted at avoiding per-query interaction between data owners and data users. However, existing non-interactive multi-client DSSE schemes do not consider forward privacy or backward privacy, making them exposed to leakage abuse attacks. Besides, most existing DSSE schemes with forward and backward privacy rely on keeping a keyword operation counter or an inverted index, resulting in a heavy storage burden on the data owner side. To address these issues, we propose a non-interactive multi-client DSSE scheme with small client storage, and our proposed scheme can provide both forward privacy and backward privacy. Specifically, we first design a lightweight storage chain structure that binds all keywords to a single state to reduce the storage cost. Then, we present a Hidden Key technique, which preserves non-interactive forward privacy through time range queries, ensuring that data with newer timestamps cannot match earlier time ranges. We conduct extensive experiments to validate our methods, which demonstrate computational efficiency. Moreover, security analysis proves the privacy-preserving property of our methods.

Toward 6G TK$μ$ Extreme Connectivity: Architecture, Key Technologies and Experiments

Sixth-generation (6G) networks are evolving towards new features and order-of-magnitude enhancement of systematic performance metrics compared to the current 5G. In particular, the 6G networks are expected to achieve extreme connectivity performance with Tbps-scale data rate, Kbps/Hz-scale spectral efficiency, and $μ$s-scale latency. To this end, an original three-layer 6G network architecture is designed to realise uniform full-spectrum cell-free radio access and provide task-centric agile proximate support for diverse applications. The designed architecture is featured by super edge node (SEN) which integrates connectivity, computing, AI, data, etc. On this basis, a technological framework of pervasive multi-level (PML) AI is established in the centralised unit to enable task-centric near-real-time resource allocation and network automation. We then introduce a radio access network (RAN) architecture of full spectrum uniform cell-free networks, which is among the most attractive RAN candidates for 6G TK$μ$ extreme connectivity. A few most promising key technologies, i.e., cell-free massive MIMO, photonics-assisted Terahertz wireless access and spatiotemporal two-dimensional channel coding are further discussed. A testbed is implemented and extensive trials are conducted to evaluate innovative technologies and methodologies. The proposed 6G network architecture and technological framework demonstrate exciting potentials for full-service and full-scenario applications.

Efficient Strong Privacy-Preserving Conjunctive Keyword Search Over Encrypted Cloud Data

Searchable symmetric encryption (SSE) supports keyword search over outsourced symmetrically encrypted data. Dynamic searchable symmetric encryption (DSSE), a variant of SSE, further enables data updating. Most DSSE works with conjunctive keyword search primarily consider forward and backward privacy. Ideally, the server should only learn the result sets involving all keywords in the conjunction. However, existing schemes suffer from keyword pair result pattern (KPRP) leakage, revealing the partial result sets containing two of query keywords. We propose the first DSSE scheme to address aforementioned concerns that achieves strong privacy-preserving conjunctive keyword search. Specifically, our scheme can maintain forward and backward privacy and eliminate KPRP leakage, offering a higher level of security. The search complexity scales with the number of documents stored in the database in several existing schemes. However, the complexity of our scheme scales with the update frequency of the least frequent keyword in the conjunction, which is much smaller than the size of the entire database. Besides, we devise a least frequent keyword acquisition protocol to reduce frequent interactions between clients. Finally, we analyze the security of our scheme and evaluate its performance theoretically and experimentally. The results show that our scheme has strong privacy preservation and efficiency.

A Sequence Repetition Node-Based Successive Cancellation List Decoder for 5G Polar Codes: Algorithm and Implementation

Due to the low-latency and high-reliability requirements of 5G, low-complexity node-based successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding has received considerable attention for use in 5G communications systems. By identifying special constituent codes in the decoding tree and immediately decoding these, node-based SCL decoding provides a significant reduction in decoding latency compared to conventional SCL decoding. However, while there exists many types of nodes, the current node-based SCL decoders are limited by the lack of a more generalized node that can efficiently decode a larger number of different constituent codes to further reduce the decoding time. In this paper, we extend a recent generalized node, the sequence repetition (SR) node to SCL decoding and we describe the first implementation of an SR-List decoder. By merging certain SR-List decoding operations and applying various optimizations for 5G New Radio (NR) polar codes, our optimized SR-List decoding algorithm increases the throughput by almost ${2\times}$ compared to a similar state-of-the-art node-based SCL decoder. We also present our hardware implementation of the optimized SR-List decoding algorithm which supports all 5G NR polar codes. Synthesis results show that our SR-List decoder can achieve a $2.94 \, \mathrm{Gbps}$ throughput and $6.70\, \mathrm{Gbps} / \mathrm{mm}^2$ area efficiency for ${L=8}$.

Automatic Hybrid-Precision Quantization for MIMO Detectors

In the design of wireless systems, quantization plays a critical role in hardware, which directly affects both area efficiency and energy efficiency. Being an enabling technique, the wide applications of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) heavily relies on efficient implementations balancing both performance and complexity. However, most of the existing detectors uniformly quantize all variables, resulting in high redundancy and low flexibility. Requiring both expertise and efforts, an in-depth tailored quantization usually asks for prohibitive costs and is not considered by conventional MIMO detectors. In this paper, a general framework named the automatic hybrid-precision quantization (AHPQ) is proposed with two parts: integral quantization determined by probability density function (PDF), and fractional quantization by deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Being automatic, AHPQ demonstrates high efficiency in figuring out good quantizations for a set of algorithmic parameters. For the approximate message passing (AMP) detector, AHPQ achieves up to $58.7\%$ lower average bitwidth than the unified quantization (UQ) one with almost no performance sacrifice. The feasibility of AHPQ has been verified by implementation with $65$ nm CMOS technology. Compared with its UQ counterpart, AHPQ exhibits $2.97\times$ higher throughput-to-area ratio (TAR) with $19.3\%$ lower energy dissipation. Moreover, by node compression and strength reduction, the AHPQ detector outperforms the state-of-the-art (SOA) in both throughput ($17.92$ Gb/s) and energy efficiency ($7.93$ pJ/b). The proposed AHPQ framework is also applicable for other digital signal processing algorithms.

Belief-selective Propagation Detection for MIMO Systems

Compared to the linear MIMO detectors, the Belief Propagation (BP) detector has shown greater capabilities in achieving near optimal performance and better nature to iteratively cooperate with channel decoders. Aiming at real applications, recent works mainly fall into the category of reducing the complexity by simplified calculations, at the expense of performance sacrifice. However, the complexity is still unsatisfactory with exponentially increasing complexity or required exponentiation operations. Furthermore, due to the inherent loopy structure, the existing BP detectors persistently encounter error floor in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region, which becomes even worse with calculation approximation. This work aims at a revised BP detector, named {Belief-selective Propagation (BsP)} detector by selectively utilizing the \emph{trusted} incoming messages with sufficiently large \textit{a priori} probabilities for updates. Two proposed strategies: symbol-based truncation (ST) and edge-based simplification (ES) squeeze the complexity (orders lower than the Original-BP), while greatly relieving the error floor issue over a wide range of antenna and modulation combinations. For the $16$-QAM $8 \times 4$ MIMO system, the $\mathcal{B}(1,1)$ {BsP} detector achieves more than $4$\,dB performance gain (@$\text{BER}=10^{-4}$) with roughly $4$ orders lower complexity than the Original-BP detector. Trade-off between performance and complexity towards different application requirement can be conveniently obtained by configuring the ST and ES parameters.

Supervised Contrastive CSI Representation Learning for Massive MIMO Positioning

Similarity metric is crucial for massive MIMO positioning utilizing channel state information~(CSI). In this letter, we propose a novel massive MIMO CSI similarity learning method via deep convolutional neural network~(DCNN) and contrastive learning. A contrastive loss function is designed considering multiple positive and negative CSI samples drawn from a training dataset. The DCNN encoder is trained using the loss so that positive samples are mapped to points close to the anchor's encoding, while encodings of negative samples are kept away from the anchor's in the representation space. Evaluation results of fingerprint-based positioning on a real-world CSI dataset show that the learned similarity metric improves positioning accuracy significantly compared with other known state-of-the-art methods.

The effects of diffusional couplings on compositional trajectories and interfacial free energies during phase separation in a quaternary Ni-Al-Cr-Re model superalloy

The temporal evolution of ordered gamma-prime(L12)-precipitates and the compositional trajectories during phase-separation of the gamma(face-centered-cubic(f.c.c.)) and gamma-prime(L12)-phases are studied in a Ni-0.10Al-0.085Cr-0.02Re(mole-fraction) superalloy, utilizing atom-probe tomography, transmission electron microscopy, and the Philippe-Voorhees (PV) coarsening model. As the gamma-prime(L12)-precipitates grow, the excesses of Ni, Cr and Re, and depletion of Al in the gamma(f.c.c.)-matrix develop as a result of diffusional fluxes crossing gamma(f.c.c.)/gamma-prime(L12) heterophase interfaces. The coupling effects on diffusional fluxes was introduced (PV coarsening model) in terms of the diffusion tensor, D, and the second-derivative tensor of the molar Gibbs free energies, G", obtained employing Thermo-Calc and DICTRA calculations. The Gibbs interfacial free energies are (6.9 +- 1.4) mJ/m2 with all terms in D and G", which changes to (18.9 +- 2.1) mJ/m2, (37.7 +- 3.3) mJ/m2, and (-7.5 +- 1.2) mJ/m2 without including the off-diagonal terms in D, G", and both D and G", respectively. The experimental APT compositional trajectories are displayed and compared with the PV model in a partial quaternary phase-diagram, employing a tetrahedron. The compositional trajectories measured by APT exhibit curvilinear behavior in the nucleation and growth regimes, which become vectors, moving simultaneously toward the gamma(f.c.c.) and gamma-prime(L12) conjugate solvus-surfaces, for the quasi-stationary coarsening regime. The compositional trajectories are compared to the PV model with and without the off-diagonal terms in D and G". The directions including the off-diagonal terms in D and G" tensors are consistent with the APT experimental data.

A New High Energy Efficiency Scheme Based on Two-Dimension Resource Blocks in Wireless Communication Systems

Energy efficiency (EE) plays a key role in future wireless communication network and it is easily to achieve high EE performance in low SNR regime. In this paper, a new high EE scheme is proposed for a MIMO wireless communication system working in the low SNR regime by using two dimension resource allocation. First, we define the high EE area based on the relationship between the transmission power and the SNR. To meet the constraint of the high EE area, both frequency and space dimension are needed. Besides analysing them separately, we decided to consider frequency and space dimensions as a unit and proposed a two-dimension scheme. Furthermore, considering communication in the high EE area may cause decline of the communication quality, we add quality-of-service(QoS) constraint into the consideration and derive the corresponding EE performance based on the effective capacity. We also derive an approximate expression to simplify the complex EE performance. Finally, our numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Spatiotemporal 2-D Channel Coding for Very Low Latency Reliable MIMO Transmission

To fully support vertical industries, 5G and its corresponding channel coding are expected to meet requirements of different applications. However, for applications of 5G and beyond 5G (B5G) such as URLLC, the transmission latency is required to be much shorter than that in eMBB. Therefore, the resulting channel code length reduces drastically. In this case, the traditional 1-D channel coding suffers a lot from the performance degradation and fails to deliver strong reliability with very low latency. To remove this bottleneck, new channel coding scheme beyond the existing 1-D one is in urgent need. By making full use of the spacial freedom of massive MIMO systems, this paper devotes itself in proposing a spatiotemporal 2-D channel coding for very low latency reliable transmission. For a very short time-domain code length $N^{\text{time}}=16$, $64 \times 128$ MIMO system employing the proposed spatiotemporal 2-D coding scheme successfully shows more than $3$\,dB performance gain at $\text{FER}=10^{-3}$, compared to the 1-D time-domain channel coding. It is noted that the proposed coding scheme is suitable for different channel codes and enjoys high flexibility to adapt to difference scenarios. By appropriately selecting the code rate, code length, and the number of codewords in the time and space domains, the proposed coding scheme can achieve a good trade-off between the transmission latency and reliability.

A Novel Full-Polarization SAR Images Ship Detector Based on the Scattering Mechanisms and the Wave Polarization Anisotropy

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is considered being a good option for earth observation with its unique advantages. In this paper, we proposed an adaptive ship detector using full-polarization SAR images. First, by thoroughly investigating the scattering characteristics between ships and their background, and the wave polarization anisotropy, a novel ship detector is proposed by jointing the two characteristics, named Scattering-Anisotropy joint (joint-SA). Based on the theoretical analysis, we showed that the joint-SA is an effective physical quantity to show the difference between the ship and its background, and thus joint-SA can be used for ship detection of full-polarization image data. Second, the generalized Gamma distribution was used to characterize the joint-SA statistics of sea clutter with a large range of homogeneity. As a result, an adaptive constant false alarm rate (CFAR) method was implemented based on the joint-SA. Finally, RADARSAT-2 and GF-3 data in C-band and ALOS data in L-band are used for verification. We tested on five datasets, and the experimental results verify the correctness and superiority of the constant false alarm rate (CFAR) method based on the joint-SA. In addition, the experimental results also showed that the signal-clutter ratio (SCR) of the proposed ship detector joint-SA (33.17 dB, 35.98 dB, 57.25 dB) is better than that of DBSP (8.92 dB, 3.43 dB, 25.40 dB) and RsDVH (17.28 dB, 11.17 dB, 54.55 dB). More importantly, the proposed detector joint-SA has higher detection accuracy and a lower false alarm rate.

Soft-Output Joint Channel Estimation and Data Detection using Deep Unfolding

We propose a novel soft-output joint channel estimation and data detection (JED) algorithm for multiuser (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems. Our algorithm approximately solves a maximum a-posteriori JED optimization problem using deep unfolding and generates soft-output information for the transmitted bits in every iteration. The parameters of the unfolded algorithm are computed by a hyper-network that is trained with a binary cross entropy (BCE) loss. We evaluate the performance of our algorithm in a coded MU-MIMO system with 8 basestation antennas and 4 user equipments and compare it to state-of-the-art algorithms separate channel estimation from soft-output data detection. Our results demonstrate that our JED algorithm outperforms such data detectors with as few as 10 iterations.

Joint Channel Estimation and Data Detection in Cell-Free Massive MU-MIMO Systems

We propose a joint channel estimation and data detection (JED) algorithm for densely-populated cell-free massive multiuser (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, which reduces the channel training overhead caused by the presence of hundreds of simultaneously transmitting user equipments (UEs). Our algorithm iteratively solves a relaxed version of a maximum a-posteriori JED problem and simultaneously exploits the sparsity of cell-free massive MU-MIMO channels as well as the boundedness of QAM constellations. In order to improve the performance and convergence of the algorithm, we propose methods that permute the access point and UE indices to form so-called virtual cells, which leads to better initial solutions. We assess the performance of our algorithm in terms of root-mean-squared-symbol error, bit error rate, and mutual information, and we demonstrate that JED significantly reduces the pilot overhead compared to orthogonal training, which enables reliable communication with short packets to a large number of UEs.

Scalable massively parallel computing using continuous-time data representation in nanoscale crossbar array

The growth of connected intelligent devices in the Internet of Things has created a pressing need for real-time processing and understanding of large volumes of analogue data. The difficulty in boosting the computing speed renders digital computing unable to meet the demand for processing analogue information that is intrinsically continuous in magnitude and time. By utilizing a continuous data representation in a nanoscale crossbar array, parallel computing can be implemented for the direct processing of analogue information in real time. Here, we propose a scalable massively parallel computing scheme by exploiting a continuous-time data representation and frequency multiplexing in a nanoscale crossbar array. This computing scheme enables the parallel reading of stored data and the one-shot operation of matrix-matrix multiplications in the crossbar array. Furthermore, we achieve the one-shot recognition of 16 letter images based on two physically interconnected crossbar arrays and demonstrate that the processing and modulation of analogue information can be simultaneously performed in a memristive crossbar array.
