On the Cocycle Structure of the Boltzmann Distribution

Based on a cocycle structure, we identify a new derivation of the Boltzmann distribution for finite energy-level systems from the maximal entropy principle (MEP). Our approach does not rely on the method of the Lagrange multiplier, and it provides a more transparent way to understand the dependence on the energy levels of the temperature $T = 1/β$ for the equilibrium distribution. Finally, we make two curious observations associated with our derivations.

Large order behavior near the AD point: the case of $\mathcal{N} =2$, $su(2)$, $N_f =2$

A non-perturbative effect in $κ$ (renormalized string coupling) obtained from the large order behavior in the vicinity of the prototypical Argyres-Douglas critical point of $su(2)$, $N_f =2$, $\mathcal{N} =2$ susy gauge theory can be studied in the GWW unitary matrix model with the log term: the one as the work done against the barrier of the effective potential by a single eigenvalue lifted from the sea and the other as a non-perturbative function contained in the solutions of the nonlinear differential equation PII that goes beyond the asymptotic series. The leading behaviors are of the form $\exp (-\frac{4}{3}\frac{1}κ \, (1, \left(\frac{s}{K}\right)^{\frac{3}{2}} ))$ respectively. We make comments on their agreement.

Flattening the Curve with Einstein's Quantum Elevator: Hermitization of Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians via a Generalized Vielbein Formalism

The formalism for non-Hermitian quantum systems sometimes blurs the underlying physics. We present a systematic study of the vielbein-like formalism which transforms the Hilbert space bundles of non-Hermitian systems into the conventional ones, rendering the induced Hamiltonian to be Hermitian. In other words, any non-Hermitian Hamiltonian can be "transformed" into a Hermitian one without altering the physics. Thus we show how to find a reference frame (corresponding to Einstein's quantum elevator) in which a non-Hermitian system, equipped with a non-trivial Hilbert space metric, reduces to a Hermitian system within the standard formalism of quantum mechanics.

Graphic Enumerations and Discrete Painlevé Equations via Random Matrix Models

We revisit the enumeration problems of random discrete surfaces (RDS) based on solutions of the discrete equations derived from the matrix models. For RDS made of squares, the recursive coefficients of orthogonal polynomials associated with the quartic matrix model satisfy the discrete type I Painlevé equation. Through the use of generating function techniques, we show that the planar contribution to the free energy is controlled by the Catalan numbers. We also develop a new systematic scheme of calculating higher-genus contributions to the topological expansion of the free energy of matrix models. It is important that our exact solutions are valid for finite-$N$ matrix models and no continuous limits are taken within our approach. To show the advantages of our approach, we provide new results of the topological expansion of the free energy for the finite-$N$ cubic matrix model.

Orthogonal Polynomials in Mathematical Physics

This is a review of ($q$-)hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials and their relation to representation theory of quantum groups, to matrix models, to integrable theory, and to knot theory. We discuss both continuous and discrete orthogonal polynomials and consider their various generalizations. The review also includes the orthogonal polynomials into a generic framework of ($q$-)hypergeometric functions and their integral representations. In particular, this gives rise to relations with conformal blocks of the Virasoro algebra.

Anatomy of a q-generalization of the Laguerre/Hermite Orthogonal Polynomials

We study a q-generalization of the classical Laguerre/Hermite orthogonal polynomials. Explicit results include: the recursive coefficients, matrix elements of generators for the Heisenberg algebra, and the Hankel determinants. The power of quadratic relation is illustrated by comparing two ways of calculating recursive coefficients. Finally, we derive a q-deformed version of the Toda equations for both q-Laguerre/Hermite ensembles.

Wronskians, dualities and FZZT-Cardy branes

The resolvent operator plays a central role in matrix models. For instance, with utilizing the loop equation, all of the perturbative amplitudes including correlators, the free-energy and those of instanton corrections can be obtained from the spectral curve of the resolvent operator. However, at the level of non-perturbative completion, the resolvent operator is generally not sufficient to recover all the information from the loop equations. Therefore it is necessary to find a sufficient set of operators which provide the missing non-perturbative information. In this paper, we study generalized Wronskians of the Baker-Akhiezer systems as a manifestation of these new degrees of freedom. In particular, we derive their isomonodromy systems and then extend several spectral dualities to these systems. In addition, we discuss how these Wronskian operators are naturally aligned on the Kac table. Since they are consistent with the Seiberg-Shih relation, we propose that these new degrees of freedom can be identified as FZZT-Cardy branes in Liouville theory. This means that FZZT-Cardy branes are the bound states of elemental FZZT branes (i.e. the twisted fermions) rather than the bound states of principal FZZT-brane (i.e. the resolvent operator).

To see Symmetry in a Forest of Trees

The exact symmetry identities among four-point tree-level amplitudes of bosonic open string theory as derived by G. W. Moore are re-examined. The main focuses of this work are: (1) Explicit construction of kinematic configurations and a new polarization basis for the scattering processes. These setups simplify greatly the functional forms of the exact symmetry identities, and help us to extract easily high-energy limits of stringy amplitudes appearing in the exact identities. (2) Connection and comparison between D. J. Gross's high-energy stringy symmetry and the exact symmetry identities as derived by G. W. Moore. (3) Observation of symmetry patterns of stringy amplitudes with respect to the order of energy dependence in scattering amplitudes.

Duality Constraints on String Theory: Instantons and spectral networks

We study an implication of $p-q$ duality (spectral duality or T-duality) on non-perturbative completion of $(p,q)$ minimal string theory. According to the Eynard-Orantin topological recursion, spectral $p-q$ duality was already checked for all-order perturbative analysis including instanton/soliton amplitudes. Non-perturbative realization of this duality, on the other hand, causes a new fundamental issue. In fact, we find that not all the non-perturbative completions are consistent with non-perturbative $p-q$ duality; Non-perturbative duality rather provides a constraint on non-perturbative contour ambiguity (equivalently, of D-instanton fugacity) in matrix models. In particular, it prohibits some of meta-stability caused by ghost D-instantons, since there is no non-perturbative realization on the dual side in the matrix-model description. Our result is the first quantitative observation that a missing piece of our understanding in non-perturbative string theory is provided by the principle of non-perturbative string duality. To this end, we study Stokes phenomena of $(p,q)$ minimal strings with spectral networks and improve the Deift-Zhou's method to describe meta-stable vacua. By analyzing the instanton profile on spectral networks, we argue the duality constraints on string theory.

Analytic Study for the String Theory Landscapes via Matrix Models

We demonstrate a first-principle analysis of the string theory landscapes in the framework of non-critical string/matrix models. In particular, we discuss non-perturbative instability, decay rate and the true vacuum of perturbative string theories. As a simple example, we argue that the perturbative string vacuum of pure gravity is stable; but that of Yang-Lee edge singularity is inescapably a false vacuum. Surprisingly, most of perturbative minimal string vacua are unstable, and their true vacuum mostly does not suffer from non-perturbative ambiguity. Importantly, we observe that the instability of these tachyon-less closed string theories is caused by ghost D-instantons (or ghost ZZ-branes), the existence of which is determined only by non-perturbative completion of string theory.

Stokes Phenomena and Quantum Integrability in Non-critical String/M Theory

We study Stokes phenomena of the k \times k isomonodromy systems with an arbitrary Poincaré index r, especially which correspond to the fractional-superstring (or parafermionic-string) multi-critical points (\hat p,\hat q)=(1,r-1) in the k-cut two-matrix models. Investigation of this system is important for the purpose of figuring out the non-critical version of M theory which was proposed to be the strong-coupling dual of fractional superstring theory as a two-matrix model with an infinite number of cuts. Surprisingly the multi-cut boundary-condition recursion equations have a universal form among the various multi-cut critical points, and this enables us to show explicit solutions of Stokes multipliers in quite wide classes of (k,r). Although these critical points almost break the intrinsic Z_k symmetry of the multi-cut two-matrix models, this feature makes manifest a connection between the multi-cut boundary-condition recursion equations and the structures of quantum integrable systems. In particular, it is uncovered that the Stokes multipliers satisfy multiple Hirota equations (i.e. multiple T-systems). Therefore our result provides a large extension of the ODE/IM correspondence to the general isomonodromy ODE systems endowed with the multi-cut boundary conditions. We also comment about a possibility that N=2 QFT of Cecotti-Vafa would be "topological series" in non-critical M theory equipped with a single quantum integrability.

Stokes Phenomena and Non-perturbative Completion in the Multi-cut Two-matrix Models

The Stokes multipliers in the matrix models are invariants in the string-theory moduli space and related to the D-instanton chemical potentials. They not only represent non-perturbative information but also play an important role in connecting various perturbative string theories in the moduli space. They are a key concept to the non-perturbative completion of string theory and also expected to imply some remnant of strong coupling dynamics in M theory. In this paper, we investigate the non-perturbative completion problem consisting of two constraints on the Stokes multipliers. As the first constraint, Stokes phenomena which realize the multi-cut geometry are studied in the Z_k symmetric critical points of the multi-cut two-matrix models. Sequence of solutions to the constraints are obtained in general k-cut critical points. A discrete set of solutions and a continuum set of solutions are explicitly shown, and they can be classified by several constrained configurations of the Young diagram. As the second constraint, we discuss non-perturbative stability of backgrounds in terms of the Riemann-Hilbert problem. In particular, our procedure in the 2-cut (1,2) case (pure-supergravity case) completely fixes the D-instanton chemical potentials and results in the Hastings-McLeod solution to the Painlevé II equation. It is also stressed that the Riemann-Hilbert approach realizes an off-shell background independent formulation of non-critical string theory.

Fractional-Superstring Amplitudes, Multi-Cut Matrix Models and Non-Critical M Theory

Multi-cut two-matrix models are studied in the Z_k symmetry breaking k-cut (\hat p,\hat q) critical points which should correspond to (\hat p,\hat q) minimal k-fractional superstring theory. FZZT-brane or macroscopic loop amplitudes are obtained in all of these critical points and found to have two kinds of solutions in general. Each of these solutions is expressed by hyperbolic cosine or sine functions with proper phase shifts. The algebraic geometries and ZZ-brane disk amplitudes (instanton actions) of these solutions are also studied. In particular, our results suggest that minimal \infty-fractional superstring theory can be viewed as a mother theory which includes all the minimal k-fractional superstring theories (k=1,2,...) as its perturbative vacua in the weak-coupling string landscape. Our results also indicate that, in the strong coupling regime of this fractional superstring theory, there is a three-dimensional theory which would be understood as the non-critical version of M theory in the sense proposed by P. Horava and C. A. Keeler.

Macroscopic loop amplitudes in the multi-cut two-matrix models

Multi-cut critical points and their macroscopic loop amplitudes are studied in the multi-cut two-matrix models, based on an extension of the prescription developed by Daul, Kazakov and Kostov. After identifying possible critical points and potentials in the multi-cut matrix models, we calculate the macroscopic loop amplitudes in the Z_k symmetric background. With a natural large N ansatz for the matrix Lax operators, a sequence of new solutions for the amplitudes in the Z_k symmetric k-cut two-matrix models are obtained, which are realized by the Jacobi polynomials.

High-Energy Symmetry of Bosonic Open String Theory in the Light-like Linear Dilaton Background

High-energy limits of fixed-angle tree-level stringy scattering amplitudes in the light-like linear dilaton background are calculated. Treating the time component of the gradient of light-like dilaton field (V_0) as a moduli parameter, we show that: (1) there exists a new fixed-point (V_0/E \to \infty) in the moduli space of the bosonic open string theory, where a new high-energy symmetry among scattering amplitudes can be identified, (2) this new symmetry can be interpreted as a deformation of the flat-space high-energy symmetry, as proposed by D. Gross. Hence, our results give a concrete illustration about the relation between high-energy stringy symmetry and the background independent formulation of string theory.

Massive Vertex Operators and Conformal Algebra of the Bosonic Open String Theory in Flat Space-time

A systematic scheme is developed for solving conformal algebra of the massive vertex operators in the old covariant first quantized string theory. Using the first massive level in the covariant spectrum of bosonic open string theory in flat space-time as an example, we explicitly verify the conformal algebra for the normal-ordered covariant vertex operator. We emphasize that the requirement of fully covariant gauge-fixing specifies the form of normal-ordering for massive vertex operators.

Vertex Operators and Scattering Amplitudes of the Bosonic Open String Theory in the Linear Dilaton Background

The operator formalism of the first quantized string theory is applied to the stringy excitations in the linear dilaton background. In particular, the normal-ordered vertex operators in the old-covariant spectrum of the bosonic open string, which correspond to the physical state solutions of the Virasoro constraints, are shown to satisfy the conformal algebra. Tree-level scattering amplitudes among different stringy states are computed using the coherent-state method and the modified inner product of the Hilbert space. Decoupling of the zero-norm states, i.e., the on-shell stringy Ward identities are shown to hold for all tree-level amplitudes under consideration.
