The dehydration of water worlds via atmospheric losses

We present a three-species multi-fluid MHD model (H$^+$, H$_2$O$^+$ and e$^-$), endowed with the requisite atmospheric chemistry, that is capable of accurately quantifying the magnitude of water ion losses from exoplanets. We apply this model to a water world with Earth-like parameters orbiting a Sun-like star for three cases: (i) current normal solar wind conditions, (ii) ancient normal solar wind conditions, and (iii) one extreme "Carrington-type" space weather event. We demonstrate that the ion escape rate for (ii), with a value of 6.0$\times$10$^{26}$ s$^{-1}$, is about an order of magnitude higher than the corresponding value of 6.7$\times$10$^{25}$ s$^{-1}$ for (i). Studies of ion losses induced by space weather events, where the ion escape rates can reach $\sim$ 10$^{28}$ s$^{-1}$, are crucial for understanding how an active, early solar-type star (e.g., with frequent coronal mass ejections) could have accelerated the depletion of the exoplanet's atmosphere. We briefly explore the ramifications arising from the loss of water ions, especially for planets orbiting M-dwarfs where such effects are likely to be significant.

Is Proxima Centauri b habitable? -- A study of atmospheric loss

We address the important question of whether the newly discovered exoplanet, Proxima Centauri b (PCb), is capable of retaining an atmosphere over long periods of time. This is done by adapting a sophisticated multi-species MHD model originally developed for Venus and Mars, and computing the ion escape losses from PCb. The results suggest that the ion escape rates are about two orders of magnitude higher than the terrestrial planets of our Solar system if PCb is unmagnetized. In contrast, if the planet does have an intrinsic dipole magnetic field, the rates are lowered for certain values of the stellar wind dynamic pressure, but they are still higher than the observed values for our Solar system's terrestrial planets. These results must be interpreted with due caution, since most of the relevant parameters for PCb remain partly or wholly unknown.

Nonlinear sub-cyclotron resonance as a formation mechanism for gaps in banded chorus

An interesting characteristic of magnetospheric chorus is the presence of a frequency gap at $ω\simeq 0.5Ω_e$, where $Ω_e$ is the electron cyclotron angular frequency. Recent chorus observations sometimes show additional gaps near $0.3Ω_e$ and $0.6Ω_e$. Here we present a novel nonlinear mechanism for the formation of these gaps using Hamiltonian theory and test-particle simulations in a homogeneous, magnetized, collisionless plasma. We find that an oblique whistler wave with frequency at a fraction of the electron cyclotron frequency can resonate with electrons, leading to effective energy exchange between the wave and particles.

Minor ion heating in spectra of linearly and circularly polarized Alfvén waves: Thermal and non-thermal motions associated with perpendicular heating

Minor ion (such as $He^{2+}$) heating via nonresonant interaction with spectra of linearly and circularly polarized Alfvén waves (LPAWs and CPAWs hereafter) is studied. The obtained analytic solutions are in good agreement with the simulation results, indicating that newborn ions are heated by low-frequency Alfvén waves with finite amplitude in low-beta plasmas such as the solar corona. The analytic solutions also reproduce the preferential heating of heavy ions in the solar wind. In the presence of parallel propagating Alfvén waves, turbulence-induced particle motion is clearly observed in the wave (magnetic field) polarized directions. After the waves diminish, the newborn ions are heated, which is caused by the phase difference (randomization) between ions due to their different parallel thermal motions. The heating is dominant in the direction perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field. The perpendicular heating, $η=(T_{i\perp}^R-T_{i0\perp}^R)/T_{i0\perp}^R$ (where $T_{i0\perp}^R$ and $T_{i\perp}^R$ are the perpendicular temperature of species $i$ before and after genuine heating, respectively), in the spectrum of CPAWs is a factor of two stronger than that of LPAWs. Moreover, we also study the effect of field-aligned differential flow speed of species $i$ relative to $H^+$, $δv_{ip} = (\mathbf{v_i}-\mathbf{v_p}) \cdot \mathbf{B} / |\mathbf{B}|$ (where $\mathbf{v_i}$ and $\mathbf{v_p}$ denote vector velocities of the $H^+$ and species $i$, respectively), on the perpendicular heating. It reveals that large drift speed, $v_d=δv_{ip}$, has an effect on reducing the efficiency of perpendicular heating, which is consistent with observations.

Ion pseudoheating by low-frequency Alfvén waves revisited

Pseudoheating of ions in the presence of Alfvén waves is studied. We show that this process can be explained by $E\times B$ drift. The analytic solution obtained in this paper are quantitatively in accordance with previous results. Our simulation results show that the Maxwellian distribution is broadened during the pseudoheating; however, the shape of the broadening distribution function depends on the number of wave modes (i.e., a wave spectrum or a monochromatic dispersionless wave) and the initial thermal speed of ions ($v_{p}$). It is of particular interests to find that the Maxwellian shape is more likely to maintain during the pseudoheating under a wave spectrum compared with a monochromatic wave. It significantly improves our understanding of heating processes in interplanetary space where Alfvénic turbulences exist pervasively. Compared with a monochromatic Alfvén wave, $E\times B$ drift produces more energetic particles in a broad spectrum of Alfvén waves, especially when the Alfvénic turbulence with phase coherent wave modes is given. Such particles may escape from the region of interaction with the Alfvén waves and can contribute to fast particle population in astrophysical and space plasmas.

Heating of ions by low-frequency Alfvén waves in partially ionized plasmas

In the solar atmosphere, the chromospheric and coronal plasmas are much hotter than the visible photosphere. The heating of the solar atmosphere, including the partially ionized chromosphere and corona, remains largely unknown. In this paper we demonstrate that the ions can be substantially heated by Alfvén waves with very low frequencies in partially ionized low beta plasmas. This differs from other Alfvén wave related heating mechanisms such as ion-neutral collisional damping of Alfvén waves and heating described by previous work on resonant Alfvén wave heating. In this paper, we find that the non-resonant Alfvén wave heating is less efficient in partially ionized plasmas than when there are no ion-neutral collisions, and the heating efficiency depends on the ratio of the ion-neutral collision frequency to the ion gyrofrequency.

Effects of Prediction Feedback in Multi-Route Intelligent Traffic Systems

We first study the influence of an efficient feedback strategy named prediction feedback strategy (PFS) based on a multi-route scenario in which dynamic information can be generated and displayed on the board to guide road users to make a choice. In this scenario, our model incorporates the effects of adaptability into the cellular automaton models of traffic flow. Simulation results adopting this optimal information feedback strategy have demonstrated high efficiency in controlling spatial distribution of traffic patterns compared with the other three information feedback strategies, i.e., vehicle number and flux. At the end of this paper, we also discuss in what situation PFS will become invalid in multi-route systems.
