CLLAP: Contrastive Learning-based LiDAR-Augmented Pretraining for Enhanced Radar-Camera Fusion

Accurate 3D object detection is critical for autonomous driving, necessitating reliable, cost-effective sensors capable of operating in adverse weather conditions. Camera and millimeter-wave radar fusion has emerged as a promising solution; however, these methods often rely on finely annotated radar data, which is scarce and labor-intensive to produce. To address this challenge, we present CLLAP, a Contrastive Learning-based LiDAR-Augmented Pretraining framework that enhances the performance of existing radar-camera fusion methods for 3D object detection. CLLAP leverages abundant LiDAR data to generate pseudo-radar data using the proposed L2R (LiDAR-to-Radar) Sampling method. Then, it incorporates this data into a novel dual-stage, dual-modality contrastive learning strategy, enabling effective self-supervised learning from paired pseudo-radar and image data. This approach facilitates effective pretraining of existing radar-camera fusion models in a plug-and-play manner, enhancing their feature extraction capabilities and improving detection accuracy and robustness. Experimental results using NuScenes and Lyft Level 5 datasets demonstrate significant performance improvements across three baseline models, highlighting CLLAP's effectiveness in advancing radar-camera fusion for autonomous driving applications.

Giant Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy in Honeycomb Iridate NiIrO3 with Large Coercive Field Exceeding 17 T

The realization of unconventional quantum phases in frustrated and spin-orbit coupled materials remains at the forefront of quantum materials research. Here we report the synthesis and discovery of NiIrO3, the first honeycomb iridate with coupled 3d-5d magnetic sublattices, through a soft topotactic reaction. Structural analysis reveals an ilmenite-type stacking of edge-sharing NiO6 and IrO6 octahedral honeycomb sublattices in a Kitaev geometry. Comprehensive magnetic and electrical transport measurements unveil its long-range ferrimagnetic order below 213 K, which is in sharp contrast to the predominantly antiferromagnetic order in the known honeycomb iridates. Notably, the titled compound displays an exceptionally large magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy of 32.2 meV/f.u. and a giant coercivity with coercive field exceeding 17.3 T below 4.2 K, both ranking among the highest observed in iridates to date. Combined experimental and theoretical investigations indicate that the exceptional anisotropy and coercivity originate from the synergistic effect between strong lattice frustration in the coupled 3d-5d honeycomb lattice network and the robust spin-orbit coupling of the Ir4+ (Jeff = 1/2) state. This work positions NiIrO3 as a promising platform to investigate low-dimensional and frustrated quantum spin systems, and highlights its potential for spintronic applications through the targeted engineering of 3d-5d interactions.

mmCooper: A Multi-agent Multi-stage Communication-efficient and Collaboration-robust Cooperative Perception Framework

Collaborative perception significantly enhances individual vehicle perception performance through the exchange of sensory information among agents. However, real-world deployment faces challenges due to bandwidth constraints and inevitable calibration errors during information exchange. To address these issues, we propose mmCooper, a novel multi-agent, multi-stage, communication-efficient, and collaboration-robust cooperative perception framework. Our framework leverages a multi-stage collaboration strategy that dynamically and adaptively balances intermediate- and late-stage information to share among agents, enhancing perceptual performance while maintaining communication efficiency. To support robust collaboration despite potential misalignments and calibration errors, our framework prevents misleading low-confidence sensing information from transmission and refines the received detection results from collaborators to improve accuracy. The extensive evaluation results on both real-world and simulated datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the mmCooper framework and its components.

Prediction of topotactic transition from black to blue phosphorus induced by surface Br adsorption

Based on first-principles calculations, we propose a potential access to the yet unrealized freestanding blue phosphorus (blueP) through transformation of black phosphorus (blackP) induced by surface bromine (Br) adsorption. Formation of the Br-P bonds disrupts the original sp3 configurations in blackP, generates unpaired pz electrons and induces a structural transformation that results in blueP formation by re-pairing the pz orbitals. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations confirm that randomly adsorbed Br adatoms on bilayer blackP spontaneously diffuse into specific patterns to render the emergence of the blueP phase. The expected obtainment Br-passivated blueP nanoribbons exhibit tunable band gaps in a wide range and high carrier mobilities of the order of 1000 cm2V-1s-1. This study provides an opportunity to fabricate blueP through the conversion from blackP by tuning its surface chemistry.
