Correlated materials design: prospects and challenges

The design of correlated materials challenges researchers to combine the maturing, high throughput framework of DFT-based materials design with the rapidly-developing first-principles theory for correlated electron systems. We review the field of correlated materials, distinguishing two broad classes of correlation effects, static and dynamics, and describe methodologies to take them into account. We introduce a material design workflow, and illustrate it via examples in several materials classes, including superconductors, charge ordering materials and systems near an electronically driven metal to insulator transition, highlighting the interplay between theory and experiment with a view towards finding new materials. We review the statistical formulation of the errors of currently available methods to estimate formation energies. Correlation effects have to be considered in all the material design steps. These include bridging between structure and property, obtaining the correct structure and predicting material stability. We introduce a post-processing strategy to take them into account.

Combined computational and experimental investigation of the La-Cu-S-O quaternary system

The lack of a mechanistic framework for chemical reactions forming inorganic extended solids presents a challenge to accelerated materials discovery. We demonstrate here a combined computational and experimental methodology to tackle this problem, in which in situ X-ray diffraction measurements monitor solid state reactions and deduce reaction pathways, while theoretical computations rationalize reaction energetics. The method has been applied to the La-Cu-S-O quaternary system, following an earlier prediction that enhanced superconductivity could be found in these of new lanthanum copper(II) oxysulfide compounds. In situ diffraction measurements show that reactants containing Cu(II) and S(2-) ions undergo redox reactions, leaving their ions in oxidation states that are incompatible with forming the desired new compounds. Computations of the reaction energies confirm that the observed synthetic pathways are indeed favored over those that would hypothetically form the suggested compounds. The consistency between computation and experiment in the La-Cu-S-O system suggests a new role for predictive theory: to identify and to explicate new synthetic routes for forming predicted compounds.

Weyl-link semimetals

A family of topological semimetallic phases where twofold degenerate gapless points form linked rings is introduced. We refer to this phase as Weyl-link semimetals. A concrete two-band model with two linked nodal lines is constructed. We demonstrate that the Chern-Simons 3-form depends on the linking number of rings in a generic two-band model. In addition, we show the emergence of zero-energy modes in the Landau level spectrum can reveal the location of nodal lines, providing a method of probing their linking number.

Metal-Mott insulator interfaces

Motivated by the direct observation of electronic phase separation in first-order Mott transitions, we model the interface between the thermodynamically coexisting metal and Mott insulator. We show how to model the required slab geometry and extract the electronic spectra. We construct an effective Landau free energy and compute the variation of its parameters across the phase diagram. Finally, using a linear mixture of the density and double-occupancy, we identify a natural Ising order parameter which unifies the treatment of the bandwidth and filling controlled Mott transitions.

Guided design of copper oxysulfide superconductors

We describe a framework for designing novel materials, combining modern first-principles electronic structure tools, materials databases, and evolutionary algorithms capable of exploring large configurational spaces. Guided by the chemical principles introduced by Antipov, \emph{et. al.}, for the design and synthesis of the Hg-based high-temperature superconductors, we apply our framework to design a new layered copper oxysulfide, Hg(CaS)$_2$CuO$_2$. We evaluate the prospects of superconductivity in this oxysulfide using theories based on charge-transfer energies, orbital distillation and uniaxial strain.

Lazy skip lists, a new algorithm for fast hybridization-expansion quantum Monte Carlo

The solution of a generalized impurity model lies at the heart of electronic structure calculations with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). In the strongly-correlated regime, the method of choice for solving the impurity model is the hybridization expansion continuous time quantum Monte Carlo(CT-HYB). Enhancements to the CT-HYB algorithm are critical for bringing new physical regimes within reach of current computational power. Taking advantage of the fact that the bottleneck in the algorithm is a product of hundreds of matrices, we present optimizations based on the introduction and combination of two concepts of more general applicability: a) skip lists and b) fast rejection of proposed configurations based on matrix bounds. Considering two very different test cases with $d$ electrons, we find speedups of $\sim 25$ up to $\sim 500$ compared to the direct evaluation of the matrix product. Even larger speedups are likely with $f$ electron systems and with clusters of correlated atoms.

Phase separation in doped Mott insulators

Motivated by the commonplace observation of Mott insulators away from integer filling, we construct a simple thermodynamic argument for phase separation in first-order doping-driven Mott transitions. We show how to compute the critical dopings required to drive the Mott transition using electronic structure calculations for the titanate family of perovskites, finding good agreement with experiment. The theory predicts the transition is percolative and should exhibit Coulomb frustration.

Tuning the charge-transfer energy in hole-doped cuprates

Chemical substitution, combined with strain, allows the charge-transfer energy in hole-doped cuprates to be broadly tuned. We theoretically characterize the structural and electronic properties of the family of compounds $R_2$CuO$_2$S$_2$, constructed by sulfur replacement of the apical oxygens and rare earth substitutions in the parent cuprate La$_2$CuO$_4$. Additionally, the enthalpies of formation for possible synthesis pathways are determined.

Scaling of the transition temperature of hole-doped cuprate superconductors with the charge-transfer energy

We use first-principles calculations to extract two essential microscopic parameters, the charge-transfer energy and the inter-cell oxygen-oxygen hopping, which correlate with the maximum superconducting transition temperature $\Tcmax$ across the cuprates. We explore the superconducting state in the three-band model of the copper-oxygen planes using cluster Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. We find that the variation in the charge-transfer energy largely accounts for the empirical trend in $\Tcmax$, resolving a long-standing contradiction with theoretical calculations.

Dynamical Mean-Field Theory within the Full-Potential Methods: Electronic structure of Ce-115 materials

We implemented the charge self-consistent combination of Density Functional Theory and Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) in two full-potential methods, the Augmented Plane Wave and the Linear Muffin-Tin Orbital methods. We categorize the commonly used projection methods in terms of the causality of the resulting DMFT equations and the amount of partial spectral weight retained. The detailed flow of the Dynamical Mean Field algorithm is described, including the computation of response functions such as transport coefficients. We discuss the implementation of the impurity solvers based on hybridization expansion and an analytic continuation method for self-energy. We also derive the formalism for the bold continuous time quantum Monte Carlo method. We test our method on a classic problem in strongly correlated physics, the isostructural transition in Ce metal. We apply our method to the class of heavy fermion materials CeIrIn_5, CeCoIn_5 and CeRhIn_5 and show that the Ce 4f electrons are more localized in CeRhIn_5 than in the other two, a result corroborated by experiment. We show that CeIrIn_5 is the most itinerant and has a very anisotropic hybridization, pointing mostly towards the out-of-plane In atoms. In CeRhIn_5 we stabilized the antiferromagnetic DMFT solution below 3K, in close agreement with the experimental Néel temperature.

Valence Fluctuations and Quasiparticle Multiplets in Pu Chalcogenides and Pnictides

The spectra of Pu chalcogenides and pnictides are computed with LDA+DMFT and interpreted with the aid of valence histograms and slave-boson calculations. We find the chalcogenides are mixed-valent ($n_f = 5.2$) materials with a strongly $T$-dependent low-energy density of states and a triplet of quasiparticle peaks below the Fermi level. Furthermore, we predict a doublet of reflected peaks above the Fermi level. In the pnictides, the raising of $f^6$ states relative to $f^5$ suppresses valence fluctuations, resulting in integral-valent ($n_f = 5.0$) local moment metals.
