Direct visualization of edge state in even-layer MnBi2Te4 at zero magnetic field

Being the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic(AFM) topological insulator(TI), MnBi2Te4 is argued to be a topological axion state in its even-layer form due to the antiparallel magnetization between the top and bottom layers. Here we combine both transport and scanning microwave impedance microscopy(sMIM) to investigate such axion state in atomically thin MnBi2Te4 with even-layer thickness at zero magnetic field. While transport measurements show a zero Hall plateau signaturing the axion state, sMIM uncovers an unexpected edge state raising questions regarding the nature of the 'axion state'. Based on our model calculation, we propose that the edge state of even-layer MnBi2Te4 at zero field is derived from gapped helical edge states of the quantum spin Hall effect with time-reversal-symmetry breaking, when a crossover from a three-dimensional TI MnBi2Te4 to a two-dimensional TI occurs. Our finding thus signifies the richness of topological phases in MnB2Te4 that has yet to be fully explored.

Majorana corner modes and flat-band Majorana edge modes in superconductor/topological-insulator/superconductor junctions

Recently, superconductors with higher-order topology have stimulated extensive attention and research interest. Higher-order topological superconductors exhibit unconventional bulk-boundary correspondence, thus allow exotic lower-dimensional boundary modes, such as Majorana corner and hinge modes. However, higher-order topological superconductivity has yet to be found in naturally occurring materials. In this work, we investigate higher-order topology in a two-dimensional Josephson junction comprised of two $s$-wave superconductors separated by a topological insulator thin film. We found that zero-energy Majorana corner modes, a boundary fingerprint of higher-order topological superconductivity, can be achieved by applying magnetic field. When an in-plane Zeeman field is applied to the system, two corner states appear in the superconducting junction. Furthermore, we also discover a two dimensional nodal superconducting phase which supports flat-band Majorana edge modes connecting the bulk nodes. Importantly, we demonstrate that zero-energy Majorana corner modes are stable when increasing the thickness of topological insulator thin film.

Quantum Anomalous Layer Hall Effect in the Topological Magnet MnBi2Te4

Recently, a type of Hall effect due to an unusual layer-locked Berry curvature called the layer Hall effect (LHE) has been reported in the even-layered two-dimensional antiferromagnetic (AFM) MnBi2Te4 [A. Gao et.al, Nature 595, 521 (2021)]. In this work, we report that the quantization of LHE, which we call the quantum anomalous layer Hall effect (QALHE), can be realized in MnBi2Te4. The QALHE originates from kicking a layer-locked Berry-curvature monopole out of the Fermi sea by a vertielectric cal field. Remarkably, we demonstrate that the electric-field reversal can switch the sign of the quantized Hall conductance of QALHE in the even-layered AFM phase. The QALHE can also be realized in the ferromagnetic phase. These results provide a promising way toward the electric engineering of the Berry curvature monopoles and quantized-layered transport in topological magnets.

Half-Quantized Helical Hinge Currents in Axion Insulators

We propose that half-quantized helical hinge currents manifest as the fingerprint of the axion insulator (AI). These helical hinge currents microscopically originate from the lateral Goos-Hänchen (GH) shift of massless side-surface Dirac electrons that are totally reflected from the hinges. Meanwhile, due to the presence of the massive top and bottom surfaces of the AI, the helical current induced by the GH shift is half-quantized. The semiclassical wave packet analysis uncovers that the hinge current has a topological origin and its half-quantization is robust to parameter changes. Lastly, we propose an experimentally feasible six-terminal device to identify the half-quantized hinge channels by measuring the nonreciprocal conductances. Our results advance the understanding of the non-trivial transport and topological magnetoelectric responses in AIs.

Edge states in a non-Hermitian topological crystalline insulator

Breaking Hermiticity in topological systems gives rise to intriguing phenomena, such as the exceptional topology and the non-Hermitian skin effect. In this work, we study a non-Hermitian topological crystalline insulator sitting on the Kekulé-modulated honeycomb lattice with balanced gain and loss. We find that the gaplessness of the topological edge states in the non-Hermitian system is insensitive to edge geometries under moderate strength of gain and loss, unlike the cases of Hermitian topological crystalline insulators that depend on edge geometries crucially. We focus on two types of gain and loss configurations, which are $PT$-symmetric and $PT$-asymmetric, respectively. For the $PT$-symmetric configuration, the Dirac point of the topological edge states in the Hermitian molecular-zigzag-terminated ribbons splits into a pair of exceptional points. The edge gap in the Hermitian armchair-terminated ribbons vanishes and a Dirac point forms as far as moderate gain and loss is induced. The band gaps of edge and bulk states in the Hermitian armchair-terminated ribbons close simultaneously for the $PT$-asymmetric configuration.

Transport Theory of Half-quantized Hall Conductance in a Semi-magnetic Topological Insulator

Recently,a half-quantized Hall conductance (HQHC) plateau is experimentally observed in a semi-magnetic topological insulator heterostructure. However, the heterostructure is metallic with a nonzero longitudinal conductance, which contradicts the common belief that quantized Hall conductance is usually observed in insulators. In this work,we systematically study the surface transport of the semi-magnetic topological insulator with both gapped and gapless Dirac surfaces in the presence of dephasing process. In particular, we reveal that the HQHC is directly related to the half-quantized chiral current along the edge of a strongly dephasing metal. The Hall conductance keeps a half-quantized value for large dephasing strengths, while the longitudinal conductance varies with Fermi energies and dephasing strengths. Furthermore, we evaluate both the conductance and resistance as a function of the temperature, which is consistent with the experimental results. Our results not only provide the microscopic transport mechanism of the HQHC,but also are instructive for the probe of the HQHC in future experiments.

Evolution of Berry curvature and reentrant quantum anomalous Hall effect in an intrinsic magnetic topological insulator

Recently, the magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ emerged as a competitive platform to realize quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) states. We report a Berry-curvature splitting mechanism to realize the QAH effect in the disordered magnetic TI multilayers when switching from an antiferromagnetic order to a ferromagnetic order. We reveal that the splitting of spin-resolved Berry curvature, originating from the separation of the mobility edge during the magnetic switching, can give rise to a QAH insulator even \emph{without} closing the band gap. We present a global phase diagram, and also provide a phenomenological picture to elucidate the Berry curvature splitting mechanism by the evolution of topological charges. At last, we predict that the Berry curvature splitting mechanism will lead to a reentrant QAH effect, which can be detected by tuning gate voltage. Our theory will be instructive for the studies of the QAH effect in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ in future experiments.

Coexisting of Quantum Hall and Quantum Anomalous Hall phases in Disordered $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$

In most cases, to observe quantized Hall plateaux, an external magnetic field is applied in intrinsic magnetic topological insulators $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$. Nevertheless, whether the nonzero Chern number ($C\neq 0$) phase is a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state, or a quantum Hall (QH) state, or a mixing state of both is still a puzzle, especially for the recently observed $C=2$ phase [Deng \textit{et al}., Science \textbf{367}, 895 (2020)]. In this Letter, we propose a physical picture based on the Anderson localization to understand the observed Hall plateaux in disordered $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$. Rather good consistency between the experimental and numerical results confirms that the bulk states are localized in the absence of a magnetic field and a QAH edge state emerges with $C=1$. However, under a strong magnetic field, the lowest Landau band formed with the localized bulk states, survives disorder, together with the QAH edge state, leading to a $C=2$ phase. Eventually, we present a phase diagram of a disordered $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$ which indicates more coexistence states of QAH and QH to be verified by future experiments.

Bulk-boundary correspondence in disordered higher-order topological insulators

In this work, we study the disorder effects on the bulk-boundary correspondence of two-dimensional higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs). We concentrate on two cases: (i) bulk-corner correspondence, (ii) edge-corner correspondence. For the bulk-corner correspondence case, we demonstrate the existence of the mobility gaps and clarify the related topological invariant that characterizes the mobility gap. Furthermore, we find that, while the system preserves the bulk-corner correspondence in the presence of disorder, the corner states are protected by the mobility gap instead of the bulk gap. For the edge-corner correspondence case, we show that the bulk mobility gap and edge band gaps of HOTIs are no longer closed simultaneously. Therefore, a rich phase diagram is obtained, including various disorder-induced phase transition processes. Notably, a disorder-induced transition from the non-trivial to trivial phase is realized, distinguishing the HOTIs from the other topological states. Our results deepen the understanding of bulk-boundary correspondence and enrich the topological phase transitions of disordered HOTIs.

Topological excitonic corner states and nodal phase in bilayer quantum spin Hall insulators

Interaction induced topological states remain one of the fascinating phases in condensed matter physics. The exciton condensate has recently sparked renewed interest due to the discovery of new candidate materials and its driving force to realize exotic topological states. In this work, we explore the exciton orders induced high-order topology in the bilayer quantum spin Hall insulators and find that the topological excitonic corner states can be realized by tuning the gate and magnetic field. When an in-plane Zeeman field is applied to the system, two or four excitonic boundary-obstructed corner states emerge in the bilayer system for distinct possible $s$-wave excitonic pairings. Besides, we also find a two-dimensional excitonic Weyl nodal phase, which supports flat band edge states connecting the bulk Weyl nodes.

Chiral Interface States and Related Quantized Transport in Disordered Chern Insulators

In this Letter, we study an Anderson-localization-induced quantized transport in disordered Chern insulators (CIs). By investigating the disordered CIs with a step potential, we find that the chiral interface states emerge along the interfaces of the step potential, and the energy range for such quantized transport can be manipulated through the potential strength. Furthermore, numerical simulations on cases with a multi-step potential demonstrate that such chiral state can be spatially shifted by varying the Fermi energy, and the energy window for quantized transport is greatly enlarged. Experimentally, such chiral interface states can be realized by imposing transverse electric field, in which the energy window for quantized transport is much broader than the intrinsic band gap of the corresponding CI. These phenomena are quite universal for disordered CIs due to the direct phase transition between the CI and the normal insulator.

The Global Phase Diagram of disordered Higher-order Weyl Semimetals

We study the disorder-induced phase transition of higher-order Weyl semimetals (HOWSMs) and the fate of the topological features of disordered HOWSMs. We obtain a global phase diagram of HOWSMs according to the scaling theory of Anderson localization. Specifically, a phase transition from the Weyl semimetal (WSM) to the HOWSM is uncovered, distinguishing the disordered HOWSMs from the traditional WSMs. Further, we confirm the robustness of Weyl-nodes for HOWSMs. Interestingly, the unique topological properties of HOWSMs show different behaviors: (i) the quantized quadrupole moment and the corresponding quantized charge of hinge states are fragile to weak disorder; (ii) the hinge states show moderate stability which enables the feasibility in experimental observation. Our study deepens the understanding of the topological nature of HOWSMs and paves a possible way to the characterization of such a phase in experiments.

Critical Behavior and Universal Signature of an Axion Insulator State

Recently, the search for an axion insulator state in the ferromagnet-3D topological insulator (TI) heterostructure and $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$ has attracted intensive interest. However, its detection remains difficult in experiments. We systematically investigate the disorder-induced phase transition of the axion insulator state in a 3D TI with antiparallel magnetization alignment surfaces. It is found that there exists a 2D disorder-induced phase transition which shares the same universality class with the quantum Hall plateau to plateau transition. Then, we provide a phenomenological theory which maps the random mass Dirac Hamiltonian of the axion insulator state into the Chalker-Coddington network model. Therefore, we propose to probe the axion insulator state by investigating the universal signature of such a phase transition in the ferromagnet-3D TI heterostructure and $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$. Our findings not only show a global phase diagram of the axion insulator state, but also provide a new experimental routine to probe it.

Scaling Behavior of the Quantum Phase Transition from a Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulator to an Axion Insulator

The phase transitions from one plateau to the next plateau or to an insulator in quantum Hall and quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) systems have revealed universal scaling behaviors. A magnetic-field-driven quantum phase transition from a QAH insulator to an axion insulator was recently demonstrated in magnetic topological insulator sandwich samples. Here, we show that the temperature dependence of the derivative of the longitudinal resistance on magnetic field at the transition point follows a characteristic power-law that indicates a universal scaling behavior for the QAH to axion insulator phase transition. Similar to the quantum Hall plateau to plateau transition, the QAH to axion insulator transition can also be understood by the Chalker-Coddington network model. We extract a critical exponent k~ 0.38 in agreement with recent high-precision numerical results on the correlation length exponent of the Chalker-Coddington model at v ~ 2.6, rather than the generally-accepted value of 2.33.

Emergent $Z_2$ Topological Invariant and Robust Helical Edge States in Two-Dimensional Topological Metals

In this work, we study the disorder effect on topological metals that support a pair of helical edge modes deeply embedded inside the gapless bulk states. Strikingly, we predict that a quantum spin Hall (QSH) phase can be obtained from such topological metals without opening a global band gap. To be specific, disorder can lead to a pair of robust helical edge states which is protected by an emergent $Z_2$ topological invariant, giving rise to a quantized conductance plateau in transport measurements. These results are instructive for solving puzzles in {various transport experiments on QSH materials} that are intrinsically metallic. This work also will inspire experimental realization of the QSH effect in disordered topological metals.

Higher-Order Topological Insulators in Quasicrystals

Current understanding of higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) is based primarily on crystalline materials. Here, we propose that HOTIs can be realized in quasicrystals. Specifically, we show that two distinct types of second-order topological insulators (SOTIs) can be constructed on the quasicrystalline lattices (QLs) with different tiling patterns. One is derived by using a Wilson mass term to gap out the edge states of the quantum spin Hall insulator on QLs. The other is the quasicrystalline quadrupole insulator (QI) with a quantized quadrupole moment. We reveal some unusual features of the corner states (CSs) in the quasicrystalline SOTIs. We also show that the quasicrystalline QI can be simulated by a designed electrical circuit, where the CSs can be identified by measuring the impedance resonance peak. Our findings not only extend the concept of HOTIs into quasicrystals but also provide a feasible way to detect the topological property of quasicrystals in experiments.

Hinged Quantum Spin-Hall Effect in Antiferromagnetic Topological Insulators

In this work, we predict a hinged quantum spin-Hall (HQSH) effect featured by a pair of helical hinge modes in antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator (TI) multilayers. This pair of helical hinge modes are localized on the hinges of the top and bottom surfaces of the AFM TI multilayers. Unlike the conventional QSH effect, the HQSH effect survives the breaking of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) and thus represents a different kind of topological phenomenon. The helical hinge modes are sustainable to inelastic scattering and TRS-breaking disorder, which can be observed in macroscopic samples. We show that this HQSH effect can be understood as a three-dimensional generalization of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and its topology is characterized by the spin Chern number. At last, we propose that the HQSH effect can be realized in newly found intrinsic AFM TI materials (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ or magnetic-doped TI multilayers by current experimental setups.

Evidence of Higher Order Topology in Multilayer WTe$_2$ from Josephson Coupling through Anisotropic Hinge States

The noncentrosymmetric Td-WTe$_2$, previously known as a type-II Weyl semimetal, is expected to have higher order topological phases with topologically protected, helical one-dimensional (1D) hinge states when their scarcely separated Weyl points get annihilated. However, the detection of these hinge states is difficult in the presence of the semimetallic behaviour of the bulk. Here, we spatially resolved the hinge states by analysing the magnetic field interference of supercurrent in Nb-WTe$_2$-Nb proximity Josephson junctions. The Josephson current along the a-axis of the WTe$_2$ crystal, but not along the b-axis, showed sharp enhancements at the edges of the junction; the amount of enhanced Josephson current was comparable to the upper limits of a single 1D conduction channel. Our experimental observations provide evidence of the higher order topological phase in WTe$_2$ and its corresponding anisotropic topological hinge states, in good agreement with theoretical calculations. Our work paves the way for hinge transport studies on topological semimetals in superconducting heterostructures, including their topological superconductivity.
