Optimization of high performance spintronic terahertz sources

To achieve high efficiency and good performance of spintronic terahertz sources, we propose and corroborate a remnant magnetization method to radiate continuously and stably terahertz pulses from W/CoFeB/Pt magnetic nanofilms without carrying magnets on the transmitters driven by femtosecond laser pulses. We systematically investigate the influences of the pumping central wavelength and find out the optimal wavelength for a fixed sample thickness. We also optimize the incidence angle of the pumping laser and find the emission efficiency is enhanced under oblique incidence. Combing the aforementioned optimizations, we finally obtain comparable radiation efficiency and broadband spectra in W/CoFeB/Pt heterostructures compared with that from 1 mm thick ZnTe nonlinear crystals via optical rectification under the same pumping conditions of 100 fs pulse duration from a Ti:sapphire laser oscillator, which was not previously demonstrated under such pulse duration. We believe our observations not only benefit for a deep insight into the physics of femtosecond spin dynamics, but also help develop novel and cost-effective ultrabroadband spintronic terahertz emitters.

Ages and Masses of 0.64 million Red Giant Branch stars from the LAMOST Galactic Spectroscopic Survey

We present a catalog of stellar age and mass estimates for a sample of 640\,986 red giant branch (RGB) stars of the Galactic disk from the LAMOST Galactic Spectroscopic Survey (DR4). The RGB stars are distinguished from the red clump stars utilizing period spacing derived from the spectra with a machine learning method based on kernel principal component analysis (KPCA). Cross-validation suggests our method is capable of distinguishing RC from RGB stars with only 2 per cent contamination rate for stars with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) higher than 50. The age and mass of these RGB stars are determined from their LAMOST spectra with KPCA method by taking the LAMOST - $Kepler$ giant stars having asteroseismic parameters and the LAMOST-TGAS sub-giant stars based on isochrones as training sets. Examinations suggest that the age and mass estimates of our RGB sample stars with SNR $>$ 30 have a median error of 30 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively. Stellar ages are found to exhibit positive vertical and negative radial gradients across the disk, and the age structure of the disk is strongly flared across the whole disk of $6<R<13$\,kpc. The data set demonstrates good correlations among stellar age, [Fe/H] and [$α$/Fe]. There are two separate sequences in the [Fe/H] -- [$α$/Fe] plane: a high--$α$ sequence with stars older than $\sim$\,8\,Gyr and a low--$α$ sequence composed of stars with ages covering the whole range of possible ages of stars. We also examine relations between age and kinematic parameters derived from the Gaia DR2 parallax and proper motions. Both the median value and dispersion of the orbital eccentricity are found to increase with age. The vertical angular momentum is found to fairly smoothly decrease with age from 2 to 12\,Gyr, with a rate of about $-$50\,kpc\,km\,s$^{-1}$\,Gyr$^{-1}$. A full table of the catalog is public available online.

An Ultrasensitive 3D Printed Tactile Sensor for Soft Robotics

A new method is presented to manufacture piezoresistive tactile sensors using fused deposition modelling (FDM)printing technology with two different filaments made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and polylactic acid-graphene (PLA-G) composite. The sensor shows very high sensitivity (gauge factor~550) and excellent recovery to bending-induced strain and can detect a wide range of pressures. This new technology opens the door for 3D printing soft robotic parts capable of tactile communications.

LEMONY--a Library of Empirical Medium-resolution spectra by Observations with the NAOC Xinglong 2.16\,m and YNAO Gaomeigu 2.4\,m telescopes

This study expands the coverage and improves the homogeneity of the distribution of MILES template stars in the parameter space, as well as extends the wavelength coverage of the template spectra to the far red beyond the Ca\,{\sc{ii}} triplet. To achieve this we have carried out a major observational campaign using the OMR long-slit spectrograph mounted on the NAOC 2.16\,m telescope and the YFOSC long-slit spectrograph mounted on the YNAO 2.4\,m telescope. The original sample is based on the MILES library, supplemented by 918 stars selected from PASTEL database. In total, 822 OMR and 1,324 YFOSC spectra, covering respectively the wavelength ranges $λλ$3800--5180 and $λλ$5150--9000, have been collected and reduced. The spectra have a mean resolution FWHM (full-width at half-maximum) of $\sim 3.3$\,Å and are wavelength- and flux-calibrated to an accuracy of $\sim 20$\,km\,s$^{-1}$ and $\sim 5$\,per\,cent, respectively. The spectra are further corrected for systematic errors in the wavelength calibration to an accuracy of $\sim 4$\,km\,s$^{-1}$ by cross-correlating with the theoretical spectra. Almost all the spectra have an average signal to noise ratio (SNR) better than 100 per pixel. Combined with the MILES spectra, there are now 1,731, 1,542, 1,324 and 1,273 stars with spectra covering respectively $λλ$3800--5180, $λλ$3800--7500, $λλ$5150--9000 and $λλ$3800--9000. This paper describes our template star selection, the observation and data reduction, and presents the reduced spectra collected hitherto.

Stellar mass distribution and star formation history of the Galactic disk revealed by mono-age stellar populations from LAMOST

We present a detailed determination and analysis of 3D stellar mass distribution of the Galactic disk for mono-age populations using a sample of 0.93 million main-sequence turn-off and subgiant stars from the LAMOST Galactic Surveys. Our results show (1) all stellar populations younger than 10\,Gyr exhibit strong disk flaring, which is accompanied with a dumpy vertical density profile that is best described by a $sech^n$ function with index depending on both radius and age; (2) Asymmetries and wave-like oscillations are presented in both the radial and vertical direction, with strength varying with stellar populations; (3) As a contribution by the Local spiral arm, the mid-plane stellar mass density at solar radius but 400--800\,pc (3--6$^\circ$) away from the Sun in the azimuthal direction has a value of $0.0594\pm0.0008$\,$M_\odot$/pc$^3$, which is 0.0164\,$M_\odot$/pc$^3$ higher than previous estimates at the solar neighborhood. The result causes doubts on the current estimate of local dark matter density; (4) The radial distribution of surface mass density yields a disk scale length evolving from $\sim$4\,kpc for the young to $\sim$2\,kpc for the old populations. The overall population exhibits a disk scale length of $2.48\pm0.05$\,kpc, and a total stellar mass of $3.6(\pm0.1)\times10^{10}$\,$M_\odot$ assuming $R_{\odot}=8.0$\,kpc, and the value becomes $4.1(\pm0.1)\times10^{10}$\,$M_\odot$ if $R_{\odot}=8.3$\,kpc; (5) The disk has a peak star formation rate ({\rm SFR}) changing from 6--8\,Gyr at the inner to 4--6\,Gyr ago at the outer part, indicating an inside-out assemblage history. The 0--1\,Gyr population yields a recent disk total {\rm SFR} of $1.96\pm0.12$\,$M_\odot$/yr.

On the kinematic signature of the Galactic warp as revealed by the LAMOST-TGAS data

Using a sample of about 123,000 stars with accurate 3D velocity measurements from the LAMOST-TGAS data, we confirm the kinematic signature of the Galactic warp found by Schönrich & Dehnen recently. The data reveal a clear trend of increasing mean vertical velocity $\overline{V_{z}}$ as a function of absolute vertical angular momentum $L_{z}$ and azimuthal velocity $V_ϕ$ for guiding center radius $R_{g}$ between 6.0 and 10.5 kpc. The trend is consistent with a large-scale Galactic warp. Similar to Schönrich & Dehnen, we also find a wave-like pattern of $\overline{V_{z}}$ versus $L_{z}$ with an amplitude of $\sim 0.9$ km s$^{-1}$ on a scale of $\sim 2.0$ kpc, which could arise from bending waves or a winding warp. Finally, we confirm a prominent, localized peak in $\overline{V_z}$ near $L_z \sim 2150$ kpc km s$^{-1}$ (corresponding to $R_{g} \sim 9$ kpc and $V_ϕ \sim 255$ km s$^{-1}$). The additional line-of-sight velocity information from LAMOST reveals that stars in this feature have a large, inward radial velocity of $V_{R} \sim -13.33 \pm 0.59$ km s$^{-1}$ and a small radial velocity dispersion $σ_{R} \sim 25.27 \pm 0.89$ km s$^{-1}$, suggesting that a stellar stream gives rise to this feature.

A new catalogue of radial velocity standard stars from the APOGEE data

We present a new catalogue of 18 080 radial velocity standard stars selected from the APOGEE data. These RV standard stars are observed at least three times and have a median stability ($3σ_{\rm RV}$) around 240 m s$^{-1}$ over a time baseline longer than 200 days. They are largely distributed in the northern sky and could be extended to the southern sky by the future APOGEE-2 survey. Most of the stars are red giants ($J - K_{\rm s} \ge 0.5$) owing to the APOGEE target selection criteria. Only about ten per cent of them are main-sequence stars. The $H$ band magnitude range of the stars is 7-12.5 mag with the faint limit much fainter than the magnitudes of previous RV standard stars. As an application, we show the new set of standard stars to determine the radial velocity zero points of the RAVE, the LAMOST {and the Gaia-RVS} Galactic spectroscopic surveys.

Mapping the emission line strengths and kinematics of Supernova Remnant S147 with extensive LAMOST spectroscopic observations

We present extensive spectroscopic observations of supernova remnant (SNR) S147 collected with the Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). The spectra were carefully sky-subtracted taking into account the complex filamentary structure of S147. We have utilized all available LAMOST spectra toward S147, including sky and stellar spectra. By measuring the prominent optical emission lines including Hα, [NII]λ6584, and [SII]λλ6717,6731, we present maps of radial velocity and line intensity ratio covering the whole nebula of S147 with unprecedented detail. The maps spatially correlated well with the complex filamentary structure of S147. For the central 2 deg of S147, the radial velocity varies from -100 to 100 km/s and peaks between ~ 0 and 10 km/s. The intensity ratios of Hα/[SII]λλ6717,6731, [SII]λ6717/λ6731 and Hα/[NII]λ6584 peak at about 0.77, 1.35 and 1.48, respectively, with a scatter of 0.17, 0.19 and 0.37, respectively. The intensity ratios are consistent with the literature values. However, the range of variations of line intensity ratios estimated here and representative of the whole nebula, are larger than previously estimated.

Binary Star Fractions from the LAMOST DR4

Stellar systems composed of single, double, triple or high-order systems are rightfully regarded as the fundamental building blocks of the Milky Way. Binary stars play an important role in formation and evolution of the Galaxy. Through comparing the radial velocity variations from multi-epoch observations, we analyze the binary fraction of dwarf stars observed with the LAMOST. Effects of different model assumptions such as orbital period distributions on the estimate of binary fractions, are investigated. The results based on log-normal distribution of orbital periods reproduce the previous complete analyses better than the power-law distribution. We find that the binary fraction increases with $T_{\rm eff}$ and decreases with [Fe/H]. We first investigate the relation between $α$-elements and binary fraction in such a large sample as the LAMOST. The old stars with high [$α$/Fe] dominate higher binary fraction than young stars with low [$α$/Fe]. At the same mass, former forming stars possess a higher binary fraction than newly forming ones, which may be related with the evolution of the Galaxy.

New Open Cluster Candidates Discovered in the XSTPS-GAC Survey

The Xuyi Schmidt Telescope Photometric Survey of the Galactic Anti-center (XSTPS-GAC) is a photometric sky survey that covers nearly 6 000 deg^2 towards Galactic anti-center in g r i bands. Half of its survey field locates on the Galactic Anti-center disk, which makes XSTPS-GAC highly suitable for searching new open clusters in the GAC region. In this paper, we report new open cluster candidates discovered in this survey, as well as properties of these open cluster candidates, such as age, distance and reddening, derived by isochrone fitting in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD). These open cluster candidates are stellar density peaks detected in the star density maps by applying the method from Koposov et al. (2008). Each candidate is inspected on its true color image composed from XSTPS-GAC three band images. Then its CMD is checked, in order to identify whether the central region stars have a clear isochrone-like trend differing from the background stars. The parameters derived from isochrone fitting for these candidates are mainly based on three band photometry of XSTPS-GAC. Meanwhile, when these new candidates are able to be seen clearly on 2MASS, their parameters are also derived based on 2MASS (J-H, J) CMD. Finally, there are 320 known open clusters rediscovered and 24 new open cluster candidates discovered in this work. Further more, the parameters of these new candidates, as well as another 11 known recovered open clusters, are properly determined for the first time.

Discovery of two new hypervelocity stars from the LAMOST spectroscopic surveys

We report the discovery of two new unbound hypervelocity stars (HVSs) from the LAMOST spectroscopic surveys. They are respectively a B2V type star of ~ 7 M$_{\rm \odot}$ with a Galactic rest-frame radial velocity of 502 km/s at a Galactocentric radius of ~ 21 kpc and a B7V type star of ~ 4 M$_{\rm \odot}$ with a Galactic rest-frame radial velocity of 408 km/s at a Galactocentric radius of ~ 30 kpc. The origins of the two HVSs are not clear given their currently poorly measured proper motions. However, the future data releases of Gaia should provide proper motion measurements accurate enough to solve this problem. The ongoing LAMOST spectroscopic surveys are expected to yield more HVSs to form a statistical sample, providing vital constraint on understanding the nature of HVSs and their ejection mechanisms.

Ages and masses of million Galactic disk main sequence turn-off and sub-giant stars from the LAMOST Galactic spectroscopic surveys

We present estimates of stellar age and mass for 0.93 million Galactic disk main sequence turn-off and sub-giant stars from the LAMOST Galactic Spectroscopic Surveys. The ages and masses are determined by matching with stellar isochrones using Bayesian algorithm, utilizing effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$, absolute magnitude ${\rm M}_V$, metallicity [Fe/H] and $α$-element to iron abundance ratio [$α$/Fe] deduced from the LAMOST spectra. Extensive examinations suggest the age and mass estimates are robust. The overall sample stars have a median error of 34 per cent for the age estimates, and half of the stars older than 2\,Gyr have age uncertainties of only 20--30 per cent. Median error for the mass estimates of the whole sample stars is $\sim8$ per cent. The huge dataset demonstrates good correlations among stellar age, [Fe/H] ([$α$/H]) and [$α$/Fe]. Particularly, double sequence features are revealed in the both the age--[$α$/Fe] and age--[Fe/H]([$α$/H]) spaces. In the [Fe/H]--[$α$/Fe] space, stars of 8--10\,Gyr exhibit both the thin and thick disk sequences, while younger (older) stars show only the thin (thick) disk sequence, indicating that the thin disk became prominent 8--10\,Gyr ago, while the thick disk formed earlier and almost quenched 8\,Gyr ago. Stellar ages exhibit positive vertical and negative radial gradients across the disk, and the outer disk of $R\gtrsim$\,9\,kpc exhibits a strong flare in stellar age distribution.

Empirical Analysis of Password Reuse and Modification across Online Service

Leaked passwords from data breaches can pose a serious threat to users if the password is reused elsewhere. With more online services getting breached today, there is still a lack of large-scale quantitative understanding of the risks of password reuse across services. In this paper, we analyze a large collection of 28.8 million users and their 61.5 million passwords across 107 services. We find that 38% of the users have reused exactly the same password across different sites, while 20% have modified an existing password to create new ones. In addition, we find that the password modification patterns are highly consistent across different user demographics, indicating a high predictability. To quantify the risk, we build a new training-based guessing algorithm, and show that more than 16 million password pairs can be cracked within just 10 attempts (30% of the modified passwords and all the reused passwords).

Towards Monetary Incentives in Social Q&A Services

Community-based question answering (CQA) services are facing key challenges to motivate domain experts to provide timely answers. Recently, CQA services are exploring new incentive models to engage experts and celebrities by allowing them to set a price on their answers. In this paper, we perform a data-driven analysis on two emerging payment-based CQA systems: Fenda (China) and Whale (US). By analyzing a large dataset of 220K questions (worth 1 million USD collectively), we examine how monetary incentives affect different players in the system. We find that, while monetary incentive enables quick answers from experts, it also drives certain users to aggressively game the system for profits. In addition, in this supplier-driven marketplace, users need to proactively adjust their price to make profits. Famous people are unwilling to lower their price, which in turn hurts their income and engagement over time. Finally, we discuss the key implications to future CQA design.

LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic Anticentre (LSS-GAC): the second release of value-added catalogues

We present the second release of value-added catalogues of the LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic Anticentre (LSS-GAC DR2). The catalogues present values of radial velocity $V_{\rm r}$, atmospheric parameters --- effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$, surface gravity log$g$, metallicity [Fe/H], $α$-element to iron (metal) abundance ratio [$α$/Fe] ([$α$/M]), elemental abundances [C/H] and [N/H], and absolute magnitudes ${\rm M}_V$ and ${\rm M}_{K_{\rm s}}$ deduced from 1.8 million spectra of 1.4 million unique stars targeted by the LSS-GAC since September 2011 until June 2014. The catalogues also give values of interstellar reddening, distance and orbital parameters determined with a variety of techniques, as well as proper motions and multi-band photometry from the far-UV to the mid-IR collected from the literature and various surveys. Accuracies of radial velocities reach 5kms$^{-1}$ for late-type stars, and those of distance estimates range between 10 -- 30 per cent, depending on the spectral signal-to-noise ratios. Precisions of [Fe/H], [C/H] and [N/H] estimates reach 0.1dex, and those of [$α$/Fe] and [$α$/M] reach 0.05dex. The large number of stars, the contiguous sky coverage, the simple yet non-trivial target selection function and the robust estimates of stellar radial velocities and atmospheric parameters, distances and elemental abundances, make the catalogues a valuable data set to study the structure and evolution of the Galaxy, especially the solar-neighbourhood and the outer disk.

Estimating stellar atmospheric parameters, absolute magnitudes and elemental abundances from the LAMOST spectra with Kernel-based Principal Component Analysis

Accurate determination of stellar atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances is crucial for Galactic archeology via large-scale spectroscopic surveys. In this paper, we estimate stellar atmospheric parameters -- effective temperature T_{\rm eff}, surface gravity log g and metallicity [Fe/H], absolute magnitudes M_V and M_{Ks}, α-element to metal (and iron) abundance ratio [α/M] (and [α/Fe]), as well as carbon and nitrogen abundances [C/H] and [N/H] from the LAMOST spectra with amultivariate regressionmethod based on kernel-based principal component analysis, using stars in common with other surveys (Hipparcos, Kepler, APOGEE) as training data sets. Both internal and external examinations indicate that given a spectral signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) better than 50, our method is capable of delivering stellar parameters with a precision of ~100K for Teff, ~0.1 dex for log g, 0.3 -- 0.4mag for M_V and M_{Ks}, 0.1 dex for [Fe/H], [C/H] and [N/H], and better than 0.05 dex for [α/M] ([α/Fe]). The results are satisfactory even for a spectral SNR of 20. The work presents first determinations of [C/H] and [N/H] abundances from a vast data set of LAMOST, and, to our knowledge, the first reported implementation of absolute magnitude estimation directly based on the observed spectra. The derived stellar parameters for millions of stars from the LAMOST surveys will be publicly available in the form of value-added catalogues.
