Phase estimation for an SU(1,1) interferometer in the presence of phase diffusion and photon losses

We theoretically study the quantum Fisher information (QFI) of the SU(1,1) interferometer with phase shifts in two arms taking account of realistic noise effects. A generalized phase transform including the phase diffusion effect is presented by the purification process. Based on this transform, the analytical QFI and the bound to the quantum precision are derived when considering the effects of phase diffusion and photon losses simultaneously. To beat the standard quantum limit with the reduced precision of phase estimation due to noisy, the upper bounds of decoherence coefficients as a function of total mean photon number are given.

High-performance Raman quantum memory with optimal control

Quantum memories with high efficiency and fidelity are essential for long-distance quantum communication and information processing. Techniques have been developed for quantum memories based on atomic ensembles. The atomic memories relying on the atom-light resonant interaction usually suffer from the limitations of narrow bandwidth. The far-off-resonant Raman process has been considered a potential candidate for use in atomic memories with large bandwidths and high speeds. However, to date, the low memory efficiency remains an unsolved bottleneck. Here, we demonstrate a high-performance atomic Raman memory in Rb87 vapour with the development of an optimal control technique. A memory efficiency of 82.6% for 10-ns optical pulses is achieved and is the highest realized to date in atomic Raman memories. In particular, an unconditional fidelity of up to 98.0%, significantly exceeding the no-cloning limit, is obtained with the tomography reconstruction for a single-photon level coherent input. Our work marks an important advance of atomic Raman memory towards practical applications in quantum information processing.

Intramode correlations enhanced phase sensitivities in an SU(1,1) interferometer

We theoretically derive the lower and upper bounds of quantum Fisher information (QFI) of an SU(1,1) interferometer whatever the input state chosen. According to the QFI, the crucial resource for quantum enhancement is shown to be large intramode correlations indicated by the Mandel $Q$-parameter. For a photon-subtracted squeezed vacuum state with high super-Poissonian statistics in one input port and a coherent state in the other input port, the quantum Cramér-Rao bound of the SU(1,1) interferometer can beat $1/\langle\hat{N}\rangle$ scaling in presence of large fluctuations in the number of photons, with a given fixed input mean number of photons. The definition of the Heisenberg limit (HL) should take into account the amount of fluctuations. The HL considering the number fluctuation effect may be the ultimate phase limit.

Resonance interaction of two dipoles in optically active surroundings

We study the resonance interaction between two quantum electric dipoles immersed in optically active surroundings. Quantum electrodynamics is employed to deal with dipole-vacuum interaction. Our results show that the optical activity of surroundings will not change the single atom behaviors while it can change the collective behaviors of the two dipoles, as well as greatly affect the dipole-dipole resonance interaction. Especially, if the orientations of two dipoles are orthogonal and respectively perpendicular to the interdipole axis, the interdipole resonance interaction can be established with the help of optically active surroundings while there is no resonance interaction in vacuum.

Phase sensitivity at the Heisenberg limit in an SU(1,1) interferometer via parity detection

We theoretically investigate the phase sensitivity with parity detection on an SU(1,1) interferometer with a coherent state combined with a squeezed vacuum state. This interferometer is formed with two parametric amplifiers for beam splitting and recombination instead of beam splitters. We show that the sensitivity of estimation phase approaches Heisenberg limit and give the corresponding optimal condition. Moreover, we derive the quantum Cramér-Rao bound of the SU(1,1) interferometer.

Effects of losses in the hybrid atom-light interferometer

Enhanced Raman scattering can be obtained by injecting a seeded light field which is correlated with the initially prepared collective atomic excitation. This Raman amplification process can be used to realize atom-light hybrid interferometer. We numerically calculate the phase sensitivities and the signal-to-noise ratios of this interferometer with the method of homodyne detection and intensity detection, and give their differences between this two methods. In the presence of loss of light field and atomic decoherence the measure precision will be reduced which can be explained by the break of the intermode decorrelation conditions of output modes

SU(1,2) Interferometer

We theoretically investigate an interferometer composed of four four-wave-mixers by Lie group method. Lie group SU(1,2) characterizes the mode transformations of this kind of interferometer. With vacuum state inputs, the phase sensitivity of SU(1,2) interferometer achieves the Heisenberg limit, and the absolute accuracy beats SU(1,1) interferometer because of higher intensity of light inside the interferometer. For different input cases, the optimal combination of output photon number for detection to obtain the best phase sensitivity is calculated. Our research on SU(1,2) interferometer sheds light on the performance of SU(1,n) interferometer in quantum metrology.

SU(1,1)-type light-atom correlated interferometer

The quantum correlation of light and atomic collective excitation can be used to compose an SU(1,1)-type hybrid light-atom interferometer, where one arm in optical SU(1,1) interferometer is replaced by the atomic collective excitation. The phase-sensing probes include not only the photon field but also the atomic collective excitation inside the interferometer. For a coherent squeezed state as the phase-sensing field, the phase sensitivity can approach the Heisenberg limit under the optimal conditions. We also study the effects of the loss of light field and the dephasing of atomic excitation on the phase sensitivity. Since nonlinear processes are involved in this interferometer, they can couple a variety of different waves and form new types of hybrid interferometers, which provides a new method for basic measurement using the hybrid interferometers.

The phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer with homodyne detection

We theoretically study the phase sensitivity of the SU(1,1) interferometer with a coherent light together with a squeezed vacuum input case using the method of homodyne. We find that the homodyne detection has better sensitivity than the intensity detection under this input case. For a certain intensity of coherent light (squeezed light) input, the relative phase sensitivity is not always better with increasing the squeezed strength (coherent light strength). The phase sensitivity can reach the Heisenberg limit only under a certain moderate parameter interval, which can be realized with current experiment ability.

Correlation enhanced phase sensitive Raman scattering in atomic vapors

We theoretically propose a method to enhance Raman scattering by injecting a seeded light field which is correlated with the initially prepared atomic spin wave. Such a light-atom correlation leads to an interference in the Raman scattering. The interference is sensitive to the relative phase between the seeded light field and initially prepared atomic spin wave. For constructive interference, the Raman scattering is greatly enhanced. Such an enhanced Raman scattering may find applications in quantum information, nonlinear optics and optical metrology due to its simplicity.

Efficient Raman Frequency Conversion by Feedbacks of Pump and Stokes Fields

We experimentally demonstrate efficient Raman conversion to respective Stokes and anti-Stokes fields in both pulsed and continuous modes with a Rb-87 atomic vapor cell. The conversion efficiency is about 40-50% for the Stokes field and 20-30% for the anti-Stokes field, respectively. This conversion process is realized with feedback of both the Raman pump and the frequency-converted fields (Stokes or anti-Stokes). The experimental setup is very simple and can be applied easily to produce the light source with larger frequency difference using other Raman media. They may have wide applications in nonlinear optics, atomic physics, quantum optics and precise measurement.

Storage and retrieval of continuous-variable polarization-entangled cluster states in atomic ensembles

We present a proposal for storing and retrieving a continuous-variable quadripartite polarization-entangled cluster state, using macroscopic atomic ensembles in a magnetic field. The Larmor precession of the atomic spins leads to a symmetry between the atomic canonical operators. In this scheme, each of the four spatially separated pulses passes twice through the respective ensemble in order to map the polarization-entangled cluster state onto the long-lived atomic ensembles. The stored state can then be retrieved by another four read-out pulses, each crossing the respective ensemble twice. By calculating the variances, we analyzed the fidelities of the storage and retrieval, and our scheme is feasible under realistic experimental conditions.

Coherently enhanced Raman scattering in atomic vapor

We present a scheme to obtain the coherently enhanced Raman scattering in atomic vapor which is induced by a spin wave initially written by a weak write laser. The enhancement of Raman scattering is dependent on the number and the spatial distribution of the flipped atoms generated by the weak write laser. Such an enhanced Raman scattering may have practical applications in quantum information, nonlinear optics and laser spectroscopy because of its simplicity.

Observation of Rabi oscillation of light assisted by atomic spin wave

Coherent conversion between a Raman pump field and its Stokes field is observed in a Raman process with a strong atomic spin wave initially prepared by another Raman process operated in the stimulated emission regime. The oscillatory behavior resembles the Rabi oscillation in atomic population in a two-level atomic system driven by a strong light field. The Rabi-like oscillation frequency is found to be related to the strength of the pre-built atomic spin wave. High conversion efficiency of 40% from the Raman pump field to the Stokes field is recorded and it is independent of the input Raman pump field. This process can act as a photon frequency multiplexer and may find wide applications in quantum information science.

Quantum tunneling time of a Bose-Einstein condensate traversing through a laser-induced potential barrier

We theoretically study the effect of atomic nonlinearity on the tunneling time in the case of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) traversing the laser-induced potential barrier. The atomic nonlinearity is controlled to appear only in the region of the barrier by employing the Feshbach resonance technique to tune interatomic interaction in the tunneling process. Numerical simulation shows that the atomic nonlinear effect dramatically changes the tunneling behavior of the BEC matter wave packet, and results in the violation of Hartman effect and the occurrence of negative tunneling time.

Generating correlated (2+1)-photon in an active Raman gain medium

A scheme of generating controllable (2+1) photons in a double-$% Λ$ atomic system based on active-Raman-gain is presented in this paper. Such (2+1) photons can be a potential candidate to generate a correlated photon pair as the photon `1' acts as a trigger. Compared to other schemes of generating correlated photon pairs, our scheme exhibits a number of advantages due to the exploit of the stimulated Raman process.

Storage of polarization-encoded cluster states in an atomic system

We present a scheme for entanglement macroscopic atomic ensembles which are four spatially separate regions of an atomic cloud using cluster-correlated beams. We show that the cluster-type polarization-encoded entanglement could be mapped onto the long-lived collective ground state of the atomic ensembles, and the stored entanglement could be retrieved based on the technique of electromagnetically induced transparency. We also discuss the efficiency of, the lifetime of, and some quantitative restrictions to the proposed quantum memory.
