Final State Interactions in Hadronic B Decays

There exist many experimental indications that final-state interactions (FSIs) may play a prominent role not only in charmful B decays but also in charmless B ones. We examine the final-state rescattering effects on the hadronic B decay rates and their impact on direct CP violation. The color-suppressed neutral modes such as $B^0\to D^0π^0,π^0π^0,ρ^0π^0,K^0π^0$ can be substantially enhanced by long-distance rescattering effects. The direct CP-violating partial rate asymmetries in charmless B decays to $ππ/πK$ and $ρπ$ are significantly affected by final-state rescattering and their signs are generally different from that predicted by the short-distance approach. For example, direct CP asymmetry in $B^0\toρ^0π^0$ is increased to around 60% due to final state rescattering effects whereas the short-distance picture gives about 1%. Evidence of direct CP violation in the decay $\bar B^0\to K^-π^+$ is now established, while the combined BaBar and Belle measurements of $\bar B^0\toρ^\pmπ^\mp$ imply a $3.6σ$ direct CP asymmetry in the $ρ^+π^-$ mode. Our predictions for CP violation agree with experiment in both magnitude and sign, whereas the QCD factorization predictions seem to have some difficulty with the data. Current data on $πK$ modes seem to violate the isospin sum rule relation, suggesting the presence of electroweak penguin contributions. We have also investigated whether a large transverse polarization in $B\to ϕK^*$ can arise from the final-state rescattering of $D^{(*)}\bar D_s^{(*)}$ into $ϕK^*$.

Light-Front Approach for Pentaquark Strong Decays

Assuming the two diquark structure for the pentaquark state as advocated in the Jaffe-Wilczek model, we study the strong decays of light and heavy parity-even pentaquark states using the light-front quark model in conjunction with the spectator approximation. The narrowness of the Theta width is ascribed to the p-wave configuration of the diquark pair. Taking the Theta width as a benchmark, we estimate the rates of the strong decays Xi_{3/2}-- to Xi- pi-, Sigma- K-, Sigma_{5c}0 to D_s- p, D_{s0}*- p and Xi_{5c}0 to D_s- Sigma+, D_{s0}^{*-} Sigma+ with Sigma_{5c} Xi_{5c} being antisextet charmed pentaquarks and D_{s0}* a scalar strange charmed meson. The ratio of Gamma(P_c to Baryon D_{s0}*)/Gamma(P_c to Baryon D_s) is very useful for verifying the parity of the antisextet charmed pentaquark P_c. It is expected to be of order unity for an even parity P_c and much less than one for an odd parity pentaquark.

Light-Front Approach for Heavy Pentaquark Transitions

Assuming the two diquark structure for the pentaquark state as advocated in the Jaffe-Wilczek model, there exist exotic parity-even anti-sextet and parity-odd triplet heavy pentaquark baryons. The theoretical estimate of charmed and bottom pentaquark masses is quite controversial and it is not clear whether the ground-state heavy pentaquark lies above or below the strong-decay threshold. We study the weak transitions of heavy pentaquark states using the light-front quark model. In the heavy quark limit, heavy-to-heavy pentaquark transition form factors can be expressed in terms of three Isgur-Wise functions: two of them are found to be normalized to unity at zero recoil, while the third one is equal to 1/2 at the maximum momentum transfer, in accordance with the prediction of the large-Nc approach or the quark model. Therefore, the light-front model calculations are consistent with the requirement of heavy quark symmetry. Numerical results for form factors and Isgur-Wise functions are presented. Decay rates of the weak decays Theta_b+ to Theta_c0 pi+ (rho+), Theta_c0 to Theta+ pi- (rho-), Sigma'_{5b}+ to Sigma'_{5c}0 pi+ (rho+) and Sigma'_{5c}0 to N_8+ pi- (rho-) with Theta_Q, Sigma'_{5Q} and N_8 being the heavy anti-sextet, heavy triplet and light octet pentaquarks, respectively, are obtained. For weakly decaying Theta_b+ and Theta_c0, the branching ratios of Theta_b+ to Theta_c0 pi+, Theta_c0 to Theta+ pi- are estimated to be at the level of 10^{-3} and a few percents, respectively.

Extraction of Axial Form Factors from Bbar0 --> D+ K- K{*0} Decay

Based on Bbar to D{(*)}K-K{*0} decay data, which supports factorization, we propose to extract the kaon axial form factor in the factorization framework. Experiment indicates that the K-K{*0} pair is produced by an axial current where only one out of three axial form factors is dominant. The axial form factor can be extracted by fitting the K-K{*0} mass spectrum with an a_1(1260)-resonance plus QCD-motivated non-resonant contributions, which can be improved as data improves.

Evidence for Factorization in Three-body $\bar B\to D^{(*)} K^- K^0$ Decays

Motivated by experimental results on $\bar B\to D^{(*)}K^-K^{0}$, we use a factorization approach to study these decays. Two mechanisms concerning kaon pair production arise: current-produced (from vacuum) and transition (from the $B$ meson). The kaon pair in the $\bar B {}^0\to D^{(*)+}K^-K^0$ decays can be produced only by the vector current (current-produced), whose matrix element can be extracted from $e^+e^-\to K\bar K$ processes via isospin relations. The decay rates obtained this way are in good agreement with experiment. The $B^-\to D^{(*)0}K^-K^0$ decays involve both current-produced and transition processes. By using QCD counting rules and the measured $B^-\to D^{(*)0} K^- K^0$ decay rates, the measured decay spectra can be understood.

Covariant Light-Front Approach for B to K* gamma, K_1 gamma, K*_2 gamma Decays

Exclusive radiative B decays, B to K* gamma, K_1(1270) gamma, K_1(1400) gamma and K*_2(1430) gamma, are studied in the framework of a covariant light-front quark model. The tensor form factor T_1(q^2) at q^2=0, which is relevant to the decay B to K* gamma, is found to be 0.24, substantially smaller than what expected from the conventional light-front model or light-cone sum rules. Taking into account the sizable next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections, the calculated branching ratio of B to K* gamma agrees with experiment, while most of the existing models predict too large B to K* gamma compared to the data. The relative strength of B to K_1(1270) gamma and B to K_1(1400) gamma rates is very sensitive to the sign of the K_1(1270)-K_1(1400) mixing angle. Contrary to the other models in which K_1(1270) gamma and K_1(1400) gamma rates are predicted to be comparable, it is found that one of them is strongly suppressed owing to a large cancellation between two different form factor terms. The calculated branching ratio of B to K*_2 gamma is in a good agreement with experiment and this may imply the smallness of NLO corrections to this radiative decay mode.

Covariant Light-Front Approach for s-wave and p-wave Mesons: Its Application to Decay Constants and Form Factors

We study the decay constants and form factors of the ground-state s-wave and low-lying p-wave mesons within a covariant light-front approach. Numerical results of the form factors for transitions between a heavy pseudoscalar meson and an s-wave or p-wave meson and their momentum dependence are presented in detail. In particular, form factors for heavy-to-light and B to D** transitions, where D** denotes generically a p-wave charmed meson, are compared with other model calculations. The experimental measurements of the decays B^- to D** pi^- and B to D D**_s are employed to test the decay constants of D**_s and the B to D** transition form factors. The heavy quark limit behavior of the decay constants and form factors is examined and it is found that the requirement of heavy quark symmetry is satisfied. The universal Isgur-Wise (IW) functions, one for s-wave to s-wave and two for s-wave to p-wave transitions, are obtained. The values of IW functions at zero recoil and their slope parameters can be used to test the Bjorken and Uraltsev sum rules.

Covariant Light-Front Approach for s-wave and p-wave Mesons

We study the decay constants and form factors of the ground-state s-wave and low-lying p-wave mesons within a covariant light-front approach. Numerical results of the B to D** transition form factors, where D** denotes generically a p-wave charmed meson, are compared with other model calculations. Predictions on the decay rates for Bbar to D** pi, D** rho, Dbar**_s D* by using these decay constants and form factors are in agreement with the experimental data. The universal Isgur-Wise functions, xi, tau_{1/2}, tau_{3/2} are obtained and are used to test the Bjorken and Uraltsev sum rules.

$\bar B^0\to ϕK_S$ and $\bar K^{*0}γ$ CP Asymmetries from Supersymmetric Right-handed Flavor Mixing: Implications for Heavy Quark Phenomenology

Two recent experimental developments, when combined, may have far reaching implications. $S_{ϕK_S} < 0$, if confirmed, would imply large $s$-$b$ mixing, a new CP phase, and right-handed dynamics. Large $Δm_{B_s}$ would be likely, making the $B_s$ program at hadron machines difficult. Reconstruction of $B$ vertex from $K_S$ at B factories, as shown by BaBar's first measurement of $S_{K_Sπ^0}$, makes $S_{K_Sπ^0γ}$ in $\bar B\to \bar K^{*0}γ$ accessible. This would be a boon for B factory upgrades. Supersymmetric Abelian flavor symmetry, independently motivated, can realize all of this with a light $\widetilde{sb}_1$ squark. B factory and collider studies of flavor, CP and SUSY may not be what we had expected.

Accounting for Slow J/psi from B Decay

A slow J/psi excess exists in the inclusive B -> J/psi+X spectrum, and is indicative of some hadronic effect. From color octet nature of c cbar pair in b-> c cbar s decay, one such possibility would be B -> J/psi+ K_g decay, where K_g is a hybrid resonance with sbar g q constituents. We show that a K_g resonance of ~ 2 GeV mass and suitably broad width could be behind the excess.

Charmless Two-body Baryonic B Decays

We study charmless two-body baryonic B decays in a diagramatic approach. Relations on decay amplitudes are obtained. In general there are more than one tree and more than one penguin amplitudes. The number of independent amplitudes can be reduced in the large m_B limit. It leads to more predictive results. Some prominent modes for experimental searches are pointed out.

Indication for Large Rescatterings in Charmless Rare B Decays

The current wealth of charmless B decay data may suggest the presence of final state rescattering. In a factorized amplitude approach, better fits are found by incorporating two SU(3) rescattering phase differences, giving delta ~ 65 degree and sigma ~ 90 - 100 degree. Fitting with unitarity phase phi_3 as a fit parameter gives phi_3 ~ 96 degree, the CP asymmetries A_{pi pi}, S_{pi pi} agree better with BaBar, and the sigma phase is slightly lower. Keeping phi_3 = 60 degree fixed in fit gives S_{pi pi} ~-0.9, which agrees better with Belle. With the sizable delta, sigma rescattering phases as fitted, many direct CP asymmetries flip sign, and B0 --> pi0 pi0, K- K+ rates are of order 10^{-6}, which can be tested soon.

Three-body Baryonic anti-B -->Lambda anti-p pi Decays and Such

We study decay rates and spectra of anti-B --> Lambda anti-p pi, Sigma0 anti-p pi, Sigma- anti-n pi, Xi0 anti-Sigma+ pi, Xi- anti-Sigma0 pi and Xi- anti-Lambda pi modes under a factorization approach. The baryon pairs are produced through vector, axial vector, scalar and pseudoscalar operators. Previous predictions, including ours, are an order of magnitude too small compared to experiment. By incorporating QCD counting rules and studying the asymptotic behavior, we find an earlier relation between the pseudoscalar and axial vector form factors to be too restrictive. Instead, the pseudoscalar and scalar form factors are related asymptotically. Following this approach, the measured Lambda anti-p pi rate (~4.0x10^{-6}) and spectrum can be understood, and Lambda should be dominantly left-hand polarized, while we expect Br(Sigma0 anti-p pi)~1.6x10^{-6}. These results and other predictions can be checked soon.

Evidence for Factorization in Three-body B --> D(*) K- K0 Decays

Motivated by recent experimental results, we use a factorization approach to study the three-body B --> D(*) K- K0 decay modes. Two mechanisms are proposed for kaon pair production: current-produced (from vacuum) and transition (from B meson). The Bbar0 --> D(*)+ K- K0 decay is governed solely by the current-produced mechanism. As the kaon pair can be produced only by the vector current, the matrix element can be extracted from e+ e- --> K Kbar processes via isospin relations. The decay rates obtained this way are in good agreement with experiment. Both current-produced and transition processes contribute to B- --> D(*)0 K- K0 decays. By using QCD counting rules and the measured B- --> D(*)0 K- K0 decay rates, the measured decay spectra can be understood.

Charmless Three-Body Baryonic B Decays

Motivated by recent data on B-> p pbar K decay, we study various charmless three-body baryonic B decay modes, including Lambda pbar pi, Sigma0 pbar pi, p pbar pi, p pbar Kbar0, in a factorization approach. These modes have rates of order 10^{-6}. There are two mechanisms for the baryon pair production, current-produced and transition. The behavior of decay spectra from these baryon production mechanisms can be understood by using QCD counting rules. Predictions on rates and decay spectra can be checked in the near future.

Possible Hints and Search for Glueball Production in Charmless Rare B Decays

Recent data on B->p pbar K, K0 pi pi and K Kbar K hint at a $\sim 2.3$ GeV object recoiling against a kaon. This could be the narrow state observed in J/ψ-> gamma xi. Nonobservation in p pbar annihilation implies ${\cal B}(ξ\to p\bar p) \sim$ few $\times 10^{-3}$, consistent with eta_c and J/ψdecays, but there are actual hints in p pbar -> phi phi and p p-> p pi^+ pi^- pi^+ pi^- p. Simple modeling shows ${\cal B}(B \to ξK){\cal B}(ξ\to p\bar p) \sim 1\times 10^{-6}$, appearing as a spike in the $p\bar p$ spectrum, with $\sim$ 30 events per 100 fb$^{-1}$; modes such as K K_s K_s, K phi phi, K4 pi (K f_2 pi pi) etc. should be explored. The underlying dynamics of g* -> g xi is analogous to g* -> g etaprime or gluon fragmentation. Discovery of sizable B -> xi K could be useful for CP violation studies.

Final State Rescattering and Color-suppressed \bar B^0-> D^{(*)0} h^0 Decays

The color-suppressed \bar B^0-> D^{(*)0}π^0, D^{(*)0}η, D^0ωdecay modes have just been observed for the first time. The rates are all larger than expected, hinting at the presence of final state interactions. Considering \bar B^0-> D^{(*)0}π^0 mode alone, an elastic D^{(*)}π-> D^{(*)}πrescattering phase difference δ\equiv δ_{1/2} - δ_{3/2} \sim 30^\circ would suffice, but the \bar B^0-> D^{(*)0}η, D^0ωmodes compel one to extend the elastic formalism to SU(3) symmetry. We find that a universal a_2/a_1=0.25 and two strong phase differences 20^\circ \sim θ< δ< δ^\prime \sim 50^\circ can describe both DP and D^*P modes rather well; the large phase of order 50^\circ is needed to account for the strength of {\it both} the D^{(*)0}π^0 and D^{(*)0}ηmodes. For DV modes, the nonet symmetry reduces the number of physical phases to just one, giving better predictive power. Two solutions are found. We predict the rates of the \bar B^0-> D^{+}_s K^-, D^{*+}_s K^-, D^0ρ^0, D^+_s K^{*-} and D^0ϕmodes, as well as \bar B^0-> D^{0}\bar K^0, D^{*0}\bar K^0, D^{0}\bar K^{*0} modes. The formalism may have implications for rates and CP asymmetries of charmless modes.

One-Loop Analysis of FCNC Induced by Right-handed Down Squark Mixings

If the underlying flavor symmetry is Abelian, quark mixings in $d_R$ sector are the most prominent. Such flavor violating effects can reveal itself through $\tilde d_R$ squark mixings if supersymmetry is realized in Nature. Quark-squark alignment is necessary to deal with $Δm_K$ and $ε_K$ constraints, but interestingly, with $m_{\tilde q}$, $m_{\tilde g} \sim$ TeV, the $\tilde d_R$ mixing effects are comparable to $B_d$ and $B_s$ mixings in the Standard Model, while $D^0$ mixing is tantalizingly close to some hints from data. CP phases in these mixings would therefore be deviant, and $| V_{td}|$ and $\arg V_{ub}^*$ may be larger than allowed by unitarity constraints, which can be checked by the BaBar and Belle experiments. Mixing induced CP violation in $b\to sγ$ and $dγ$ transitions can be obtained, in particular, by sizable enhancement with an extra $\tanβ$ factor from non-standard soft breaking terms. Heavy superparticles can escape present flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) bounds and direct searches at colliders, but reveal themselves in the B system.
