Exploring neutralino dark matter resonance annihilation via bA,bH -> b mu^+ mu^- at the LHC

One of the main channels which allows for a large rate of neutralino dark matter annihilation in the early Universe is via the pseudoscalar Higgs A-resonance. In this case, the measured dark matter abundance can be obtained in the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model when tan(beta)\sim 50 and 2m_{\tz_1}\sim m_A. We investigate the reaction pp\to bϕ\to bμ^+μ^- +X (where ϕ=A or H) at the CERN LHC where requiring the tag of a single b-jet allows for amplification of the signal-to-background ratio. The rare but observable Higgs decay to muon pairs allows for a precise measurement of the Higgs boson mass and decay width. We evaluate signal and background using CalcHEP, with muon energy smearing according to the CMS detector. We find that the Higgs width (Γ_A) can typically be determined with the accuracy up to \sim 8% (\sim 17%) for m_A\sim 400 (600) GeV assuming 10^3 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity. Therefore, the pp\to bϕ\to bμ^+μ^- +X process provides a unique possibility for direct Γ_A measurement at the LHC. While the Higgs width is correlated with the parameter \tanβfor a given value of m_A, extracting \tanβis complicated by an overlap of the A and H peaks, radiative corrections to the b and τYukawa couplings, and the possibility that SUSY decay modes of the Higgs may be open. In the case where a dilepton mass edge from \tz_2\to\ell^+\ell^-\tz_1 is visible, it should be possible to test the relation that 2m_{\tz_1}\sim m_A.

Searching for Colorons at the Large Hadron Collider

We investigate the prospects for the discovery of massive color-octet vector bosons at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV. A phenomenological Lagrangian is adopted to evaluate the cross section of a pair of colored vector bosons (colorons, $\tildeρ$) decaying into four colored scalar resonances (hyper-pions, $\tildeπ$), which then decay into eight gluons. We include the dominant physics background from the production of $8g,7g1q, 6g2q$, and $5g3q$, and determine the masses of $\tildeπ$ and $\tildeρ$ where discovery is possible. For example, we find that a 5$σ$ signal can be established for $M_{\tildeπ} \alt 495$ GeV ($M_{\tildeρ} \alt 1650$ GeV). More generally we give the reach of this process for a selection of possible cuts and integrated luminosities.

Discovering Colorons at the Early Stage LHC

We investigate the prospects for the discovery of massive hyper-gluons using data from the early runs of the CERN Large Hadron Collider with $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV and assuming an integrated luminosity of 1 fb$^{-1}$. A phenomenological Lagrangian is adopted to evaluate the cross section of a pair of colored vector bosons (coloron, $\tildeρ$) decaying into four colored scalar resonances (hyper-pion, $\tildeπ$), which then decay into eight gluons. We include the dominant physics background from the production of $8g$, $7g1q$, $6g2q$, and $5g3q$. We find an abundance of signal events and that realistic cuts reduce the background enough to establish a $5σ$ signal for $m_{\tildeπ} \alt 220$ GeV or $m_{\tildeρ} \alt 733$ GeV.

Discovering the Higgs Bosons of Minimal Supersymmetry with Bottom Quarks

We investigate the prospects for the discovery of a neutral Higgs boson produced with one bottom quark followed by Higgs decay into a pair of bottom quarks at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We work within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The dominant physics background is calculated with realistic acceptance cuts and efficiencies including the production of $bb\bar{b}$, $\bar{b}b\bar{b}$, $jb\bar{b}$ ($j = g, q, \bar{q}$; $q = u, d, s, c$), $t\bar{t} \to b\bar{b}jj\ellν$, and $t\bar{t} \to b\bar{b}jjjj$. Promising results are found for the CP-odd pseudoscalar ($A^0$) and the heavier CP-even scalar ($H^0$) Higgs bosons with masses up to 800 GeV for the LHC with an integrated luminosity ($L$) of 30 fb$^{-1}$ and up to 1 TeV for $L =$ 300 fb$^{-1}$.

Discovering the Higgs Bosons of Minimal Supersymmetry with Tau Leptons and a Bottom Quark

We investigate the prospects for the discovery at the CERN Large Hadron Collider or at the Fermilab Tevatron of neutral Higgs bosons through the channel where the Higgs are produced together with a single bottom quark and the Higgs decays into a pair of tau leptons, $bg \to bϕ^0 \to bτ^+τ^-, ϕ^0 = h^0, H^0, A^0$. We work within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric model. The dominant physics background from the production of $bτ^+τ^-$, $jτ^+τ^-$ ($j = g, u, d, s, c$), $b\bar{b}W^+W^-$, $W+2j$ and $Wbj$ is calculated with realistic acceptance cuts and efficiencies. Promising results are found for the CP-odd pseudoscalar ($A^0$) and the heavier CP-even scalar ($H^0$) Higgs bosons with masses up to one TeV.

SUSY QCD Corrections to Higgs Pair Production from Bottom Quark Fusion

We present a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation for the total cross section for inclusive Higgs pair production via bottom-quark fusion at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and the minimal supergravity model (mSUGRA). We emphasize the contributions of squark and gluino loops (SQCD) and the decoupling properties of our results for heavy squark and gluino masses. The enhanced couplings of the b quark to the Higgs bosons in supersymmetric models with large tanb yield large NLO SQCD corrections in some regions of parameter space.

Bs ->mu+ mu- versus Direct Higgs Searches

We investigate the prospects for the discovery of neutral Higgs bosons with muons by direct searches at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as well as by indirect searches in the rare decay Bs -> mu+ mu- at the Fermilab Tevatron and the LHC. Promising results have been found for the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model, and supergravity models with non-universal Higgs masses (NUHM SUGRA). For tanb \simeq 50, we find that (i) the contours for a branching fraction of B(Bs -> mu+ mu-) = 1x10^{-8} in the parameter space are very close to the 5σcontours for pp -> b ϕ^0 -> b mu+ mu- + X, ϕ^0 = h^0, H^0, A^0 at the LHC with an integrated luminosity (L) of 30 fb^{-1},(ii) the regions covered by B(Bs -> mu+ mu-) \ge 5x10^{-9} and the discovery region for bϕ^0 -> b mu+ mu- with 300 fb^{-1} are complementary in the mSUGRA parameter space,(iii) in NUHM SUGRA models, a discovery of B(Bs -> mu+ mu-) \simeq 5x10^{-9} at the LHC will cover regions of the parameter space beyond the direct search for pp -> bϕ^0 -> b mu+ mu- with L = 300 fb^{-1}.

QCD Corrections to Higgs Pair Production in Bottom Quark Fusion

We present a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation for the total cross section of inclusive Higgs pair production via bottom-quark fusion ($b\bar{b} \to hh$) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the Standard Model. The NLO QCD corrections lead to less dependence on the renormalization scale ($μ_R$) and the factorization scale ($μ_F$) than the leading-order (LO) cross section, and they significantly increase the LO cross section. The rate for inclusive Higgs pair production is small in the Standard Model, but can be large in models with enhanced couplings of the $b$ quark to the Higgs bosons.

Detecting Higgs Bosons with Muons at Hadron Colliders

We investigate the prospects for the discovery of neutral Higgs bosons with a pair of muons by direct searches at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as well as by indirect searches in the rare decay $B_s \to μ^+μ^-$ at the Fermilab Tevatron and the LHC. Promising results are found for the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model, and supergravity models with non-universal Higgs masses (NUHM SUGRA). For $\tanβ\simeq 50$, we find that (i) the contours for a branching fraction of $B(B_s \to μ^+μ^-) = 1 \times 10^{-8}$ in the parameter space are very close to the $5σ$ contours for $pp \to bϕ^0 \to bμ^+μ^- +X, ϕ^0 = h^0, H^0, A^0$ at the LHC with an integrated luminosity ($L$) of 30 fb$^{-1}$, (ii) the regions covered by $B(B_s \to μ^+μ^-) \ge 5\times 10^{-9}$ and the discovery region for $bϕ^0 \to bμ^+μ^-$ with 300 fb$^{-1}$ are complementary in the mSUGRA parameter space, (iii) in NUHM SUGRA models, a discovery of $B(B_s \to μ^+μ^-) \simeq 5\times 10^{-9}$ at the LHC will cover regions of the parameter space beyond the direct search for $bϕ^0 \to bμ^+μ^-$ with $L = 300$ fb$^{-1}$.

Detecting a Higgs Pseudoscalar with a Z Boson Produced in Bottom Quark Fusion

We investigate the prospects of detecting a Higgs pseudoscalar ($A^0$) in association with a $Z$ gauge boson produced from bottom quark fusion ($b\bar{b} \to ZA^0$) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A general two Higgs doublet model and the minimal supersymmetric standard model are adopted to study the discovery potential of $pp \to ZA^0 \to \ell \bar{\ell} b\bar{b} +X (\ell = e, μ)$, via $b\bar{b} \to ZA^0$ with physics backgrounds and realistic cuts. Promising results are found for $m_A \alt 400$ GeV in a general two Higgs doublet model when the heavier Higgs scalar ($H^0$) can decay into a $Z$ boson and a Higgs pseudoscalar ($H^0 \to ZA^0$). We compare the production rates from bottom quark fusion ($b\bar{b} \to ZA^0$) and gluon fusion ($gg \to ZA^0$) and find that they are complementary processes to produce $ZA^0$ in hadron collisions. While gluon fusion is the major source for producing a Higgs pseudoscalar associated with a $Z$ boson at the LHC for $\tanβ\alt 10$, bottom quark fusion can make dominant contributions for $\tanβ\agt 10$.

Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment in a Supersymmetric U(1)' Model

We study the muon anomalous magnetic moment a_μ= (g_μ- 2)/2 in a supersymmetric U(1)' model. The neutralino sector has extra components from the superpartners of the U(1)' gauge boson and the extra Higgs singlets that break the U(1)' symmetry. The theoretical maximum bound on the lightest neutralino mass is much smaller than that of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) because of the mixing pattern of the extra components. In a U(1)' model where the U(1)' symmetry is broken by a secluded sector (the S-model), tanβis required to be < 3 to have realistic electroweak symmetry breaking. These facts suggest that the a_μprediction may be meaningfully different from that of the MSSM. We evaluate and compare the muon anomalous magnetic moment in this model and the MSSM and discuss the constraints on tanβand relevant soft breaking terms. There are regions of the parameter space that can explain the experimental deviation of a_μfrom the Standard Model calculation and yield an acceptable cold dark matter relic density without conflict with collider experimental constraints.

Neutralino Relic Density in a Supersymmetric U(1)' Model

We study properties of the lightest neutralino (χ) and calculate its cosmological relic density in a supersymmetric U(1)' model with a secluded U(1)' breaking sector (the S-model). The lightest neutralino mass is smaller than in the minimal supersymmetric standard model; for instance, m_χ< 100 GeV in the limit that the U(1)' gaugino mass is large compared to the electroweak scale. We find that the Z-χ-χcoupling can be enhanced due to the singlino components in the extended neutralino sector. Neutralino annihilation through the Z-resonance then reproduces the measured cold dark matter density over broad regions of the model parameter space.

Detecting a Higgs Pseudoscalar with a $Z$ Boson at the LHC

We have adopted two Higgs doublet models to study the production of a Higgs pseudoscalar ($A^0$) in association with a $Z$ gauge boson from gluon fusion ($gg \to ZA^0$) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The prospects for the discovery of $ZA^0 \to \ell \bar{\ell} b\bar{b}$ are investigated with physics backgrounds and realistic cuts. Promising results are found for $m_A \alt 260$ GeV in two Higgs doublet models when the heavier Higgs scalar ($H^0$) can decay into a $Z$ boson and a Higgs pseudoscalar ($A^0$). Although the cross section of $gg \to ZA^0$ is usually small in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, it can be significantly enhanced in general two Higgs doublet models. This discovery channel might provide an opportunity to search for a Higgs scalar and a Higgs pseudoscalar simultaneously at the LHC and could lead to new physics beyond the Standard Model and the minimal supersymmetric model.

Higgs Decays into Leptons

We discuss the prospects for the discovery of neutral Higgs bosons ($ϕ^0 = H^0, h^0, A^0$) in multi-Higgs doublet models via their decays into leptons at hadron colliders. A major focus will be searching for Higgs bosons produced with bottom quarks via Higgs decays into muon pairs ($pp \to b\bar{b}ϕ^0 \to b\bar{b}μ\barμ +X$) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric model.

Searching for the Higgs Bosons of Minimal Supersymmetry with Muon Pairs and Bottom Quarks

The prospects for the discovery of neutral Higgs bosons (phi^0 = H^0, h^0, A^0) produced with bottom quarks via Higgs decays into muon pairs (pp --> b b-bar phi^0 --> b b-bar mu mu-bar +X) at the CERN LHC are investigated in the minimal supersymmetric model. The complete physics background from the production of b b-bar mu mu-bar, b b-bar W^+ W^- (including t t-bar) and jj mu mu-bar, j = g, u, d, s, c in the Standard Model is calculated with realistic acceptance cuts. This discovery mode has a simple production mechanism from gg --> b b-bar phi^0 with its cross section proportional to 1/cos^2(beta) and could provide an opportunity to measure tan(beta) and the b b-bar phi^0 couplings. In addition, we compare the associated discovery mode above with the inclusive discovery channel pp --> phi^0 --> mu mu-bar +X. Promising results are found for the CP-odd pseudoscalar (A^0) and the heavier CP-even scalar (H^0) Higgs bosons for tan(beta) equivalent to v_2/v_1 >~ 14 and m_A,m_H <~ 325 GeV.

Constraints on extra dimensions from cosmological and terrestrial measurements

If quantum fields exist in extra compact dimensions, they will give rise to a quantum vacuum or Casimir energy. That vacuum energy will manifest itself as a cosmological constant. The fact that supernova and cosmic microwave background data indicate that the cosmological constant is of the same order as the critical mass density to close the universe supplies a lower bound on the size of the extra dimensions. Recent laboratory constraints on deviations from Newton's law place an upper limit. The allowed region is so small as to suggest that either extra compact dimensions do not exist, or their properties are about to be tightly constrained by experimental data.

Implications of New CMB Data for Neutralino Dark Matter

The combination of new cosmic microwave background data with cosmological priors has determined the physical cold dark matter (cdm) density to be $Ω_{\rm cdm} h^2 = 0.13\pm0.01$. We find the corresponding regions of parameters in the minimal supergravity model for which the lightest neutralino is the cdm particle. We then compare with the muon anomalous magnetic moment ($a_μ$) measurement, the mass of the lighter CP-even Higgs boson ($h^0$), the trilepton search at the upgraded Fermilab Tevatron collider, and a direct search for relic neutralinos. The intersection of $Ω_{\rm cdm} h^2$ and $a_μ$ constraints selects $\tanβ\approx 40-45$.

Indirect Search for Neutralino Dark Matter with High Energy Neutrinos

We investigate the prospects of indirect searches for supersymmetric neutralino dark matter. Relic neutralinos gravitationally accumulate in the Sun and their annihilations produce high energy neutrinos. Muon neutrinos of this origin can be seen in large detectors like AMANDA, IceCube and ANTARES. We evaluate the relic density and the detection rate in several models---the minimal supersymmetric model, minimal supergravity, and supergravity with non-universal Higgs boson masses at the grand unification scale. We make realistic estimates for the indirect detection rates including effects of the muon detection threshold, quark hadronization, and solar absorption. We find good prospects for detection of neutralinos with mass above 200 GeV.
