Kondo effect in a side-coupled double-quantum-dot system embedded in a mesoscopic ring

We study the finite size effect of the Kondo screening cloud in a double-quantum-dot setup via a large-N slave-boson mean-field theory. In this setup, one of the dots is embedded in a close metallic ring with a finite size $L$ and the other dot is side-coupled to the embedded dot via an anti-ferromagnetic spin-spin exchange coupling with the strength K. The antiferromagnetic coupling favors the local spin-singlet and suppresses the Kondo screening. The effective Kondo temperature T_k (proptotional to the inverse of the Kondo screening cloud size) shows the Kosterlitz--Thouless (KT) scaling at finite sizes, indicating the quantum transition of the KT type between the Kondo screened phase for K < K_c and the local spin-singlet phase for K > K_c in the thermodynamic limit with K_c being the critical value. The mean-field phase diagram as a function of 1/L and K shows a crossover between Kondo and local spin-singlet ground states for K < K_c (L=4n, 4n+1, 4n+3) and for K>K_c (L=4n+2). To look into the crossover region more closely, the local density of states on the quantum dot and the persistent current at finite sizes with different values of $K$ are also calculated.

Non-equilibrium transport at a dissipative quantum phase transition

We pioneerly investigate the non-equilibrium transport near a quantum phase transition in a generic and relatively simple case model, the dissipative resonant level model, that has many ramifications in nanosystems. We formulate a rigorous mapping and apply a controlled frequency-dependent renormalization group approach to compute the non-equilibrium current in the presence of a finite bias voltage V. For V -> 0, we find that the conductance has its well-known equilibrium form, while it displays a distinct non-equilibrium profile at finite voltage.

Commensurate lock-in and incommensurate supersolid phases of hardcore bosons on anisotropic triangular lattices

We investigate the interplay between commensurate lock-in and incommensurate supersolid phases of the hardcore bosons at half-filling with anisotropic nearest-neighbor hopping and repulsive interactions on triangular lattice. We use numerical quantum and variational Monte Carlo as well as analytical Schwinger boson mean-field analysis to establish the ground states and phase diagram. It is shown that, for finite size systems, there exist a series of jumps between different supersolid phases as the anisotropy parameter is changed. The density ordering wavevectors are locked to commensurate values and jump between adjacent supersolids. In the thermodynamic limit, however, the magnitude of these jumps vanishes leading to a continuous set of novel incommensurate supersoild phases.

Two-stage Kondo effect in side-coupled quantum dots: Renormalized perturbative scaling theory and Numerical Renormalization Group analysis

We study numerically and analytically the dynamical (AC) conductance through a two-dot system, where only one of the dots is coupled to the leads but it is also side-coupled to the other dot through an antiferromagnetic exchange (RKKY) interaction. In this case the RKKY interaction gives rise to a ``two-stage Kondo effect'' where the two spins are screened by two consecutive Kondo effects. We formulate a renormalized scaling theory that captures remarkably well the cross-over from the strongly conductive correlated regime to the low temperature low conductance state. Our analytical formulas agree well with our numerical renormalization group results. The frequency dependent current noise spectrum is also discussed.

Quantum phase transitions in a resonant-level model with dissipation: Renormalization-group studies

We study a spinless level that hybridizes with a fermionic band and is also coupled via its charge to a dissipative bosonic bath. We consider the general case of a power-law hybridization function $Γ(\w)\propto |\w|^r$ with $r\ge 0$, and a bosonic bath spectral function $B(\w)\propto \w^s$ with $s\ge -1$. For $r<1$ and $\mathrm{max}(0,2r-1)<s<1$, this Bose-Fermi quantum impurity model features a continuous zero-temperature transition between a delocalized phase, with tunneling between the impurity level and the band, and a localized phase, in which dissipation suppresses tunneling in the low-energy limit. The phase diagram and the critical behavior of the model are elucidated using perturbative and numerical renormalization-group techniques, between which there is excellent agreement in the appropriate regimes. For $r=0$ this model's critical properties coincide with those of the spin-boson and Ising Bose-Fermi Kondo models, as expected from bosonization.

Quantum criticality in a double quantum-dot system

We discuss the realization of the quantum-critical non-Fermi liquid state, originally discovered within the two-impurity Kondo model, in double quantum-dot systems. Contrary to the common belief, the corresponding fixed point is robust against particle-hole and various other asymmetries, and is only unstable to charge transfer between the two dots. We propose an experimental set-up where such charge transfer processes are suppressed, allowing a controlled approach to the quantum critical state. We also discuss transport and scaling properties in the vicinity of the critical point.

Kondo effect in coupled quantum dots with RKKY interaction: Finite temperature and magnetic field effects

We study transport through two quantum dots coupled by an RKKY interaction as a function of temperature and magnetic field. By applying the Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) method we obtain the transmission and the linear conductance. At zero temperature and magnetic field, we observe a quantum phase transition between the Kondo screened state and a local spin singlet as the RKKY interaction is tuned. Above the critical RKKY coupling the Kondo peak is split. However, we find that both finite temperature and magnetic field restore the Kondo resonance. Our results agree well with recent transport experiments on gold grain quantum dots in the presence of magnetic impurities.

Formation of Electronic Nematic Phase in Interacting Systems

We study the formation of an electronic nematic phase characterized by a broken point-group symmetry in interacting fermion systems within the weak coupling theory. As a function of interaction strength and chemical potential, the phase transition between the isotropic Fermi liquid and nematic phase is first order at zero temperature and becomes second order at a finite temperature. The transition is present for all typical, including quasi-2D, electronic dispersions on the square lattice and takes place for arbitrarily small interaction when at van Hove filling, thus suppressing the Lifshitz transition. In connection with the formation of the nematic phase, we discuss the origin of the first order transition and competition with other broken symmetry states.

Evolution of the single-hole spectral function across a quantum phase transition in the anisotropic-triangular-lattice antiferromagnet

We study the evolution of the single-hole spectral function when the ground state of the anisotropic-triangular-lattice antiferromagnet changes from the incommensurate magnetically-ordered phase to the spin-liquid state. In order to describe both of the ground states on equal footing, we use the large-N approach where the transition between these two phases can be obtained by controlling the quantum fluctuations via an 'effective' spin magnitude. Adding a hole into these ground states is described by a t-J type model in the slave-fermion representation. Implications of our results to possible future ARPES experiments on insulating frustrated magnets, especially Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$, are discussed.

The planar pyrochlore antiferromagnet: A large-N analysis

We study possible quantum phases of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the planar pyrochlore lattice, also known as the checkerboard lattice or the square lattice with crossings. It is assumed that the exchange coupling on the square-lattice-links is not necessarily the same as those along the crossing links. When all the couplings are the same, this model may be regarded as a two dimensional analog of the pyrochlore antiferromagnet. The large-N limit of the Sp($N$) generalized model is considered and the phase diagram is obtained by analyzing the fluctuation effects about the $N \to \infty$ limit. We find a topologically-ordered $Z_2$-spin-liquid phase in a narrow region of the phase diagram as well as the plaquette-ordered and staggered spin-Peierls phases as possible quantum-disordered paramagnetic phases.

Competing Orders and Superconductivity in the Doped Mott Insulator on the Shastry-Sutherland Lattice

Quantum antiferromagnets on geometrically frustrated lattices often allow a number of unusual paramagnetic ground states. The fate of these Mott insulators upon doping is an important issue that may shed some light on the high $T_c$ cuprate problem. We consider the doped Mott insulator on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice via the t-J model. The U(1) slave-boson mean field theory reveals the strong competition between different broken symmetry states. It is found that, in some ranges of doping, there exist superconducting phases with or without coexisting translational-symmetry- breaking orders such as the staggered flux or dimerization. Our results will be directly relevant to SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ when this material is doped in future.

Signatures of Electronic Nematic Phase at Isotropic-Nematic Phase Transition

The electronic nematic phase occurs when the point-group symmetry of the lattice structure is broken, due to electron-electron interactions. We study a model for the nematic phase on a square lattice with emphasis on the phase transition between isotropic and nematic phases within mean field theory. We find the transition to be first order, with dramatic changes in the Fermi surface topology accompanying the transition. Furthermore, we study the conductivity tensor and Hall constant as probes of the nematic phase and its transition. The relevance of our findings to Hall resistivity experiments in the high-$T_c$ cuprates is discussed.

Statistics of spinons in the spin-liquid phase of Cs2CuCl4

Motivated by a recent experiment on Cs2CuCl4, we study the spin dynamics of the spin-liquid phase of the spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the anisotropic triangular lattice. There have been two different proposals for the spin-liquid phase of Cs2CuCl4. These spin-liquid states support different statistics of spinons; the bosonic Sp(N) large-N mean field theory predicts bosonic spinons while the SU(2) slave-boson mean field theory leads to fermionic spinons. We compute the dynamical spin structure factor for both types of spin-liquid state at zero and finite temperatures. While at zero temperature both theories agree with experiment on a qualitative level, they show substantial differences in the temperature dependence of the dynamical spin structure factor.
