Conformal Pomeron and Odderon in Strong Coupling

We discuss how exact conformal invariance in the strong coupling leads naturally through AdS/CFT correspondence to a systematic expansion for the Pomeron and Odderon intercepts in power of $λ^{-1/2}$, with $λ=g^2N_c$ the 't Hooft coupling. We also point out the importance of confinement for a realistic treatment of DIS in the HERA energy range.

BCFW Deformation and Regge Limit

BCFW deformation has served as an extremely useful tool in providing a recursive approach in studying color-ordered gauge amplitudes. This procedure has also been generalized to the study of graviton scattering. An important ingredient of this approach is the ability to identify amplitudes satisfying convergent dispersion relation when the BCFW parameter, z, is treated as a complex variable. In a modified BCFW treatment, we show in what sense the BCFW deformation in the large-z limit can be understood as the Regge limit. We also discuss how the issue of convergent dispersion integral for amplitudes involving external spins relates to the study of super-convergence relation which served as the precursor to the s-t duality relation for flat space string amplitudes.

Recurrence Relations of Higher Spin BPST Vertex Operators for Open String

We calculate higher spin BPST vertex operators for open bosonic string and express these operstors in terms of Kummer function of the second kind. We derive infinite number of recurrence relations among BPST vertex operators of different string states. These recurrence relations among BPST vertex operators lead to the recurrence relations among Regge string scattering amplitudes discovered recently.

Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and Higgs Production Using the Pomeron in AdS

In the past decade overwhelming evidence has emerged for a conjectured duality between a wide class of gauge theories in d dimensions and string theories on asymptotically AdS_{d+1} spaces. We apply this duality to scattering processes that occur via Pomeron exchange. First we develop the Pomeron in string theory, as done by Brower, Polchinski, Strassler and Tan, showing that it naturally emerges as the Regge Trajectory of the AdS graviton. Next we apply the AdS Pomeron to the study of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS), and see that our model gives good results when compared to HERA data. We then show how we can extend our results to double Pomeron exchange, and apply it to developing a formalism for the study of double diffractive Higgs production.

Holographic Double Diffractive Production of Higgs and the AdS Graviton/Pomeron

The holographic approach to double diffractive Higgs production is presented for the AdS graviton/Pomeron. The goal is to provide a predictive phenomenology for the strong coupling expansion of QCD. This is the first step to set up the framework for the double diffractive Higgs production in anticipation of experimental observations at the LHC. Comparisons are made with the weak coupling approach based on the BFKL Pomeron models and soft Regge parameterizations.

Small-x Deep Inelastic Scattering via the Pomeron in AdS

We examine the process of Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) in the small-x limit, where Pomeron exchange dominates. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study Pomeron exchange in the dual string theory in AdS space, which allows us to study DIS at strong coupling. Two possibilities are examined, a purely conformal model, and a model with a hard-wall cutoff introduced to take into account the effects of confinement. Comparing our calculations with HERA DIS data, we find a very good agreement not only at large $Q^2$ dominated by conformal symmetry, but due to our strong coupling approach which allows us to go beyond traditional pQCD methods, at small $Q^2$ as well, taking into account all available HERA small x data.

Diffractive Higgs Production by AdS Pomeron Fusion

The double diffractive Higgs production at central rapidity is formulated in terms of the fusion of two AdS gravitons/Pomerons first introduced by Brower, Polchinski, Strassler and Tan in elastic scattering. Here we propose a simple self-consistent holographic framework capable of providing phenomenologically compelling estimates of diffractive cross sections at the LHC. As in the traditional weak coupling approach, we anticipate that several phenomenological parameters must be tested and calibrated through factorization for a self-consistent description of other diffractive process such as total cross sections, deep inelastic scattering and heavy quark production in the central region.

The AdS Graviton/Pomeron Description of Deep Inelastic Scattering at Small x

In the holographic or AdS/CFT dual to QCD, the Pomeron is identified with a Reggeized Graviton in $AdS_5$. We emphasize the importance of confinement, which in this context corresponds to a deformation of $AdS_5$ geometry in the IR. The holographic Pomeron provides a very good fit to the combined data from HERA for Deep Inelastic Scattering at small $x$, lending new confidence to this AdS dual approach to high energy diffractive scattering.

String-Gauge Dual Description of Deep Inelastic Scattering at Small-$x$

The AdS/CFT correspondence in principle gives a new approach to deep inelastic scattering as formulated by Polchinski and Strassler. Subsequently Brower, Polchinski, Strassler and Tan (BPST) computed the strong coupling kernel for the vacuum (or Pomeron) contribution to total cross sections. By identifying deep inelastic scattering with virtual photon total cross section, this allows a self consistent description at small-$x$ where the dominant contribution is the vacuum exchange process. Here we formulate this contribution and compare it with HERA small-$x$ DIS scattering data. We find that the BPST kernel along with a very simple local approximation to the proton and current "wave functions" gives a remarkably good fit not only at large $Q^2$ dominated by conformal symmetry but also extends to small $Q^2$, supplemented by a hard-wall cut-off of the AdS in the IR. We suggest that this is a useful phenomenological parametrization with implications for other diffractive processes, such as double diffractive Higgs production.

On the Eikonal Approximation in AdS Space

We explore the eikonal approximation to graviton exchange in AdS_5 space, as relevant to scattering in gauge theories. We restrict ourselves to the regime where conformal invariance of the dual gauge theory holds, and to large 't Hooft coupling where the computation involves pure gravity. We give a heuristic argument, a direct loop computation, and a shock wave derivation. The scalar propagator in AdS_3 plays a key role, indicating that even at strong coupling, two-dimensional conformal invariance controls high-energy four-dimensional gauge-theory scattering.

On The Pomeron at Large 't Hooft Coupling

We begin the process of unitarizing the Pomeron at large 't Hooft coupling. We do so first in the conformal regime, which applies to good accuracy to a number of real and toy problems in QCD. We rewrite the conformal Pomeron in the $J$-plane and transverse position space, and then work out the eikonal approximation to multiple Pomeron exchange. This is done in the context of a more general treatment of the complex $J$-plane and the geometric consequences of conformal invariance. The methods required are direct generalizations of our previous work on single Pomeron exchange and on multiple graviton exchange in AdS space, and should form a starting point for other investigations. We consider unitarity and saturation in the conformal regime, noting elastic and absorptive effects, and exploring where different processes dominate. Our methods extend to confining theories and we briefly consider the Pomeron kernel in this context. Though there is important model dependence that requires detailed consideration, the eikonal approximation indicates that the Froissart bound is generically both satisfied and saturated.

Elastic and Diffractive Scattering after AdS/CFT

At high energies, elastic hadronic cross sections are believed to be dominated by vacuum exchange. In leading order of the leading $1/N_c$ expansion this exchange process has been identified as the BFKL {\em Pomeron} or its strong AdS dual the closed string graviton \cite{Brower:2006ea}. However difference of particle anti-particle cross sections are given by a so-called {\em Odderon} carrying C = -1 quantum numbers identified in weak coupling with odd numbers of exchanged gluons. Here we show that the dual description associates this with the Neveu-Schwartz ($B_{μν}$) sector of closed string theory. We also discuss the extension of the strong coupling treatment to central diffractive Higgs production at LHC.

Analyticity for Multi-Regge Limits of the Bern-Dixon-Smirnov Amplitudes

As a consequence of the AdS/CFT correspondence, planar ${\cal N} =4$ super Yang-Mills SU(N) theory is expected to exhibit stringy behavior and multi-Regge asymptotic. In this paper we extend our recent investigation to consider issues of analyticity, a central feature of Regge asymptotics. We contrast flat-space open string theory in the planar limit with the ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, as represented by the Bern, Dixon and Smirnov \cite{Bern:2005iz} (BDS) conjecture for n-gluon scattering, believed to be exact for $n=4,5$ and modified only by a function of cross-ratios for $n\geq 6$. It is emphasized that multi-Regge factorization should be applied to trajectories with definite signature. A variety of analyticity and factorization constraints realized in flat space string theory are not satisfied by the BDS conjecture, at least when the exponential factors are truncate in the infra-red regulator below $O(ε)$.

Odderon in Gauge/String Duality

At high energies, elastic hadronic cross sections, such as $pp, \overline p p, π^{\pm} p$, are dominated by vacuum exchange, which in leading order of the $1/N_c$ expansion has been identified as the BFKL Pomeron or its strong AdS dual the closed string Reggeized graviton \cite{Brower:2006ea}. However the difference of particle anti-particle cross sections are given by a so-called Odderon, carrying C = -1 vacuum quantum numbers identified in weak coupling with odd numbers of exchanged gluons. Here we show that in the dual description the Odderon is the Reggeized Kalb-Ramond field ($B_{μν}$) in the Neveu-Schwartz sector of closed string theory. To first order in strong coupling, the high energy contribution of Odderon is evaluated for ${\cal N} = 4$ Super Yang-Mills by a generalization of the gravity dual analysis for Pomeron in Ref. \cite{Brower:2006ea}. The consequence of confinement on the Odderon are estimated in the confining QCD-like $AdS^5$ hardwall model of Polchinski and Strassler \cite{Polchinski:2001tt}.

Implications of multi-Regge limits for the Bern-Dixon-Smirnov conjecture

Planar ${\cal N} =4$ super Yang-Mills SU(N) theory is expected to exhibit stringy behavior, anticipated by the 't Hooft genus expansion and the $AdS/CFT$ correspondence. We examine the Bern-Dixon-Smirnov (BDS) conjecture for $n$-gluon amplitudes in the context of single-Regge and multi-Regge limits and show that these amplitudes have the expected Regge form in the Euclidean region.

Saturation and Confinement: Analyticity, Unitarity and AdS/CFT Correspondence

In $1/N_c$ expansion, analyticity and crossing lead to crossing even and odd ($C=\pm 1$) vacuum exchanges at high-energy, the {\em Pomeron} and the {\em Odderon}. We discuss how, using {\em String/Gauge duality}, these can be identified with a reggeized {\em Graviton} and the anti-symmetric {\em Kalb-Ramond fields} in $AdS$ background. With confinement, these Regge singularities interpolate with glueball states. We also discuss unitarization based on eikonal sum in $AdS$.

Ultra-high energy neutrino scattering

Estimates are made of the ultra-high energy neutrino cross sections based on an extrapolation to very small Bjorken x of the logarithmic Froissart dependence in x shown previously to provide an excellent fit to the measured proton structure function F_2^p(x,Q^2) over a broad range of the virtuality Q^2. Expressions are obtained for both the neutral current and the charged current cross sections. Comparison with an extrapolation based on perturbative QCD shows good agreement for energies where both fit data, but our rates are as much as a factor of 10 smaller for neutrino energies above 10^9 GeV, with important implications for experiments searching for extra-galactic neutrinos.

The Pomeron and Gauge/String Duality

The traditional description of high-energy small-angle scattering in QCD has two components -- a soft Pomeron Regge pole for the tensor glueball, and a hard BFKL Pomeron in leading order at weak coupling. On the basis of gauge/string duality, we present a coherent treatment of the Pomeron. In large-N QCD-like theories, we use curved-space string-theory to describe simultaneously both the BFKL regime and the classic Regge regime. The problem reduces to finding the spectrum of a single j-plane Schrodinger operator. For ultraviolet-conformal theories, the spectrum exhibits a set of Regge trajectories at positive t, and a leading j-plane cut for negative t, the cross-over point being model-dependent. For theories with logarithmically-running couplings, one instead finds a discrete spectrum of poles at all t, where the Regge trajectories at positive t continuously become a set of slowly-varying and closely-spaced poles at negative t. Our results agree with expectations for the BFKL Pomeron at negative t, and with the expected glueball spectrum at positive t, but provide a framework in which they are unified. Effects beyond the single Pomeron exchange are briefly discussed.
