Projective synchronization in fractional order chaotic systems and its control

The chaotic dynamics of fractional (non-integer) order systems have begun to attract much attention in recent years. In this paper, we study the projective synchronization in two coupled fractional order chaotic oscillators. It is shown that projective synchronization can also exist in coupled fractional order chaotic systems. A simple feedback control method for controlling the scaling factor onto a desired value is also presented.

Synchronization of Coupled Nonidentical Genetic Oscillators

The study on the collective dynamics of synchronization among genetic oscillators is essential for the understanding of the rhythmic phenomena of living organisms at both molecular and cellular levels. Genetic oscillators are biochemical networks, which can generally be modelled as nonlinear dynamic systems. We show in this paper that many genetic oscillators can be transformed into Lur'e form by exploiting the special structure of biological systems. By using control theory approach, we provide a theoretical method for analyzing the synchronization of coupled nonidentical genetic oscillators. Sufficient conditions for the synchronization as well as the estimation of the bound of the synchronization error are also obtained. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our theoretical results, a population of genetic oscillators based on the Goodwin model are adopted as numerical examples.

On-off intermittency in small-world networks of chaotic maps

Small-world networks are highly clustered networks with small average distance among the nodes. There are many natural and technological networks that present this kind of connections. The on-off intermittency is investigated in small-world networks of chaotic maps in this paper. We show how the small-world topology would affect the on-off intermittency behavior. The distributions of the laminar phase are calculated numerically. The results show that the laminar phases obey power-law distributions.

An evolving network model with community structure

Many social and biological networks consist of communities - groups of nodes within which connections are dense, but between which connections are sparser. Recently, there has been considerable interest in designing algorithms for detecting community structures in real-world complex networks. In this paper, we propose an evolving network model which exhibits community structure. The network model is based on the inner-community preferential attachment and inter-community preferential attachment mechanisms. The degree distributions of this network model are analyzed based on a mean-field method. Theoretical results and numerical simulations indicate that this network model has community structure and scale-free properties.

Complex networks generated by the Penna bit-string model: Emergence of small-world and assortative mixing

The Penna bit-string model successfully encompasses many phenomena of population evolution, including inheritance, mutation, evolution and ageing. If we consider social interactions among individuals in the Penna model, the population will form a complex network. In this paper, we first modify the Verhulst factor to control only the birth rate, and introduce activity-based preferential reproduction of offspring in the Penna model. The social interactions among individuals are generated by both inheritance and activity-based preferential increase. Then we study the properties of the complex network generated by the modified Penna model. We find that the resulting complex network has a small-world effect and the assortative mixing property.

Hopf Bifurcation and Chaos in a Single Inertial Neuron Model with Time Delay

A delayed differential equation modelling a single neuron with inertial term is considered in this paper. Hopf bifurcation is studied by using the normal form theory of retarded functional differential equations. When adopting a nonmonotonic activation function, chaotic behavior is observed. Phase plots, waveform plots, and power spectra are presented to confirm the chaoticity.

Hopf Bifurcation and Chaos in Tabu Learning Neuron Models

In this paper, we consider the nonlinear dynamical behaviors of some tabu leaning neuron models. We first consider a tabu learning single neuron model. By choosing the memory decay rate as a bifurcation parameter, we prove that Hopf bifurcation occurs in the neuron. The stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions and the direction of the Hopf bifurcation are determined by applying the normal form theory. We give a numerical example to verify the theoretical analysis. Then, we demonstrate the chaotic behavior in such a neuron with sinusoidal external input, via computer simulations. Finally, we study the chaotic behaviors in tabu learning two-neuron models, with linear and quadratic proximity functions respectively.

Stability of a neural network model with small-world connections

Small-world networks are highly clustered networks with small distances among the nodes. There are many biological neural networks that present this kind of connections. There are no special weightings in the connections of most existing small-world network models. However, this kind of simply-connected models cannot characterize biological neural networks, in which there are different weights in synaptic connections. In this paper, we present a neural network model with weighted small-world connections, and further investigate the stability of this model.

Synchronization of fractional order chaotic systems

The chaotic dynamics of fractional order systems begin to attract much attentions in recent years. In this brief report, we study the master-slave synchronization of fractional order chaotic systems. It is shown that fractional order chaotic systems can also be synchronized.

A comprehensive weighted evolving network model

Many social, technological, biological, and economical systems are best described by weighted networks, whose properties and dynamics depend not only on their structures but also on the connection weights among their nodes. However, most existing research work on complex network models are concentrated on network structures, with connection weights among their nodes being either 1 or 0. In this paper, we propose a new weighted evolving network model. Numerical simulations indicate that this network model yields three power-law distributions of the node degrees, connection weights and node strengths. Particularly, some other properties of the distributions, such as the droop-head and heavy-tail effects, can also be reflected by this model.

Network connection strengths: Another power-law?

It has been discovered recently that many social, biological and ecological systems have the so-called small-world and scale-free features, which has provoked new research interest in the studies of various complex networks. Yet, most network models studied thus far are binary, with the linking strengths being either 0 or 1, while which are best described by weighted-linking networks, in which the vertices interact with each other with varying strengths. Here we found that the distribution of connection strengths of scientific collaboration networks decays also in a power-law form and we conjecture that all weighted-linking networks of this type follow the same distribution.
