Shigatse Astronomical Site Testing. I. Cloud-cover Climatology and Selected Local Meteorological Conditions

As the first paper in a Shigatse astronomical site-testing series, we present a multi-source assessment of cloud cover and selected local meteorological conditions at the Shigatse 40 m site on the southern Tibetan Plateau. The study combines CALIPSO-GOCCP active-lidar climatology, ISCCP HXG passive-satellite cloud fields, conventional total-cloud-amount observations from the Shigatse Meteorological Station, and on-site Weather Station measurements. Together, these records characterize Shigatse as a southern-plateau monsoon-transition cloud regime: the active-lidar climatology gives a moderate-to-low annual cloud fraction, and the cloudier months are concentrated in the June--September monsoon interval. In GOCCP, the annual mean cloud fraction is 42.1%, while the October--May low-cloud season has a mean cloud fraction of 26.3%, compared with 73.7% during the June--September monsoon interval. ISCCP gives higher absolute cloud fractions but supports the same seasonal phase and local spatial placement. The aligned 1988--2013 meteorological-station record gives a total-cloud-amount <=40% fraction of 80.7% during October--May, rising to 90.7% in the November--January core, and decreasing to 39.9% during June--September. The 2024--2025 Weather Station archive further shows high fractions of valid samples satisfying the adopted meteorological criteria during the low-cloud months: 92.6% for the October--May night-time proxy and 94.6% for the corresponding 24 h samples. These results identify Shigatse as a measured lower-latitude southern-plateau cloud-cover reference within China's site-testing network, with a well-defined October--May low-cloud observing period and a Shigatse--Ali low-cloud corridor for subsequent regional site testing.

SN 2021hpr: A Normal Type Ia Supernova Showing Excess Emission in the Early Rising Phase

We present extensive optical observations of a nearby Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), SN 2021hpr, located in the spiral galaxy NGC 3147 at a distance of $\sim$ 45 Mpc. Our observations cover a phase within $\sim 1-2$ days to $\sim 290$ days after the explosion. SN 2021hpr is found to be a spectroscopically normal SN Ia, with an absolute B-band peak magnitude of $M_{max}(B) \approx -19.16 \pm 0.14$ mag and a post-peak decline rate of $Δm_{15}(B)= 1.00 \pm 0.01 $ mag. Early-time light curves showed a $\sim 7.0 \%$ excess emission compared to a homogeneously expanding fireball model, likely due to SN ejecta interacting with a companion or immediate circumstellar matter. The optical spectra of SN 2021hpr are overall similar to those of normal SNe Ia, but characterized by prominent detached high-velocity features (HVFs) of Si {\sc ii} and Ca {\sc ii} in the early phase. After examining a small sample of well-observed normal SNe Ia, we find that the HVFs are likely common for the subgroup with early-excess emission. The association of early bump feature with the HVFs could be attributed to density or abundance enhancement at the outer layer of the exploding star, likely as a result of interactions with companion$/$CSM or experiencing more complete burning. Nevertheless, the redshifted Fe {\sc ii} and Ni {\sc ii} lines in the nebular-phase spectra of SN 2021hpr, contrary to the blueshift trend seen in other SNe Ia showing early bump features, indicate its peculiarity in the explosion that remains to be understood.

Optical Flares Detected on a Contact Binary: The First Photometric and Spectroscopic Analysis of a Long-period Low Mass Ratio Contact Binary HAT 307-0007476

This paper presents the photometric and spectroscopic analysis of a long-period totally eclipsing contact binary (HAT 307-0007476) for the first time. This system is a low mass ratio ($q\sim0.114$) and medium contact binary ($f\sim37.1\%$). Two flare events were detected in multiple bands observations in December 2022. The interval between the two flare events is 4 days. The average duration of these two flares is about 2289s. Both the two flares achieve the energy levels of superflares. The excess emission of the H$_α$ line in the LAMOST spectra of this object was analyzed, indicating its chromospheric activity. The $O-C$ diagram showed a long-term orbital period increase, which is due to the mass transfer between the two component stars. We conclude that HAT 307-0007476 is currently in a stable region based on both $J_{spin}/J_{orb}$ and the comparison between the instability parameters and its current values.

Optical turbulence in the atmospheric surface layer at the Pamir Plateau Muztagh-ata site

In this paper, we conducted a detailed analysis of optical turbulence in the Atmospheric Surface Layer (ASL) at Muztagh-ata site during on-site testing. We utilized ultrasonic anemometers positioned on a 30-meter tower to collect and process data at five height levels, obtaining data from October 1, 2021 to the present. We investigated the behavior of optical turbulence parameters (\(C_n^2\) and seeing \(\varepsilon\)) in the ASL. Nighttime \(C_n^2\) primarily fluctuated in the range of \(10^{-16}\) to \(10^{-14}\), exhibiting an exponential decrease with height. During the day, it showed a \(h^{-0.82}\) dependency, while at night, it displayed a \(h^{-0.48}\) dependency. Additionally, we presented the distribution of seeing across different layers within the ASL, showing a gradual decrease with increasing height, with a median seeing of 0.24 arcseconds at nighttime and 0.48 arcseconds at daytime between 6-30m. We investigated the relationship between surface temperature inversion, seeing in the ASL, and wind speed at the site. Our results show that under temperature inversion conditions, seeing significantly improves and is often accompanied by low to moderate wind speeds, while high wind speeds are usually associated with poorer seeing. Preliminary calculations and observational results, combined with the high altitude and unique geographical location, suggest that Muztagh-ata site has the potential to be an outstanding optical astronomical observatory in the western plateau of china.

Rapid Automatic Multiple Moving Objects Detection Method Based on Feature Extraction from Images with Non-sidereal Tracking

Optically observing and monitoring moving objects, both natural and artificial, is important to human space security. Non-sidereal tracking can improve the system's limiting magnitude for moving objects, which benefits the surveillance. However, images with non-sidereal tracking include complex background, as well as objects with different brightness and moving mode, posing a significant challenge for accurate multi-object detection in such images, especially in wide field of view (WFOV) telescope images. To achieve a higher detection precision in a higher speed, we proposed a novel object detection method, which combines the source feature extraction and the neural network. First, our method extracts object features from optical images such as centroid, shape, and flux. Then it conducts a naive labeling based on those features to distinguish moving objects from stars. After balancing the labeled data, we employ it to train a neural network aimed at creating a classification model for point-like and streak-like objects. Ultimately, based on the neural network model's classification outcomes, moving objects whose motion modes consistent with the tracked objects are detected via track association, while objects with different motion modes are detected using morphological statistics. The validation, based on the space objects images captured in target tracking mode with the 1-meter telescope at Nanshan, Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory, demonstrates that our method achieves 94.72% detection accuracy with merely 5.02% false alarm rate, and a processing time of 0.66s per frame. Consequently, our method can rapidly and accurately detect objects with different motion modes from wide-field images with non-sidereal tracking.

Early-Time Observations of SN 2023wrk: A Luminous Type Ia Supernova with Significant Unburned Carbon in the Outer Ejecta

We present extensive photometric and spectroscopic observations of the nearby Type Ia supernova (SN) 2023wrk at a distance of about 40 Mpc. The earliest detection of this SN can be traced back to a few hours after the explosion. Within the first few days the light curve shows a bump feature, while the B - V color is blue and remains nearly constant. The overall spectral evolution is similar to that of an SN 1991T/SN 1999aa-like SN Ia, while the C II $\lambda6580$ absorption line appears to be unusually strong in the first spectrum taken at $t \approx -$15.4 days after the maximum light. This carbon feature disappears quickly in subsequent evolution but it reappears at around the time of peak brightness. The complex evolution of the carbon line and the possible detection of Ni III absorption around 4700 Å and 5300 Å in the earliest spectra indicate macroscopic mixing of fuel and ash. The strong carbon lines is likely related to collision of SN ejecta with unbound carbon, consistent with the predictions of pulsational delayed-detonation or carbon-rich circumstellar-matter interaction models. Among those carbon-rich SNe Ia with strong C II $\lambda6580$ absorption at very early times, the line-strength ratio of C II to Si II and the B-V color evolution are found to exhibit large diversity, which may be attributed to different properties of unbound carbon and outward-mixing $^{56}$Ni.

New constraints on Triton's atmosphere from the 6 October 2022 stellar occultation

The atmosphere of Triton was probed directly by observing a ground-based stellar occultation on 6 October 2022. This rare event yielded 23 positive light curves collected from 13 separate observation stations contributing to our campaign. The significance of this event lies in its potential to directly validate the modest pressure fluctuation on Triton, a phenomenon not definitively verified by previous observations, including only five stellar occultations, and the Voyager 2 radio occultation in 1989. Using an approach consistent with a comparable study, we precisely determined a surface pressure of $14.07_{-0.13}^{+0.21}~\mathrm{μbar}$ in 2022. This new pressure rules out any significant monotonic variation in pressure between 2017 and 2022 through direct observations, as it is in alignment with the 2017 value. Additionally, both the pressures in 2017 and 2022 align with the 1989 value. This provides further support for the conclusion drawn from the previous volatile transport model simulation, which is consistent with the observed alignment between the pressures in 1989 and 2017; that is to say, the pressure fluctuation is modest. Moreover, this conclusion suggests the existence of a northern polar cap extended down to at least $45^\circ$N$-60^\circ$N and the presence of nitrogen between $30^\circ$S and $0^\circ$.

M31N 2013-10c: A Newly Identified Recurrent Nova in M31

The nova M31N 2023-11f (2023yoa) has been recently identified as the second eruption of a previously recognized nova, M31N 2013-10c, establishing the latter object as the 21st recurrent nova system thus far identified in M31. Here we present well sampled $R$-band lightcurves of both the 2013 and 2023 eruptions of this system. The photometric evolution of each eruption was quite similar as expected for the same progenitor system. The 2013 and 2023 eruptions each reached peak magnitudes just brighter than $R\sim16$, with fits to the declining branches of the eruptions yielding times to decline by two magnitudes of $t_2(R)=5.5\pm1.7$ and $t_2(R)=3.4\pm1.5$ days, respectively. M31N 2013-10c has an absolute magnitude at peak, $M_R=-8.8\pm0.2$, making it the most luminous known recurrent nova in M31.

Photometric calibration of the Stellar Abundance and Galactic Evolution Survey (SAGES): Nanshan One-meter Wide-field Telescope g, r, and i band imaging data

In this paper, a total of approximately 2.6 million dwarfs were constructed as standard stars, with an accuracy of about 0.01-0.02 mag for each band, by combining spectroscopic data from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope Data Release 7, photometric data from the corrected Gaia Early Data Release 3, and photometric metallicities. Using the spectroscopy based stellar color regression method (SCR method) and the photometric-based SCR method (SCR' method), we performed the relative calibration of the Nanshan One-meter Wide-field Telescope imaging data. Based on the corrected Pan-STARRS DR1 photometry, the absolute calibration was also performed. In the photometric calibration process, we analyzed the dependence of the calibration zero points on different images (observation time), different gates of the CCD detector, and different CCD positions. We found that the stellar flat and the relative gain between different gates depend on time. The amplitude of gain variation in three channels is approximately 0.5%-0.7% relative to the other channel, with a maximum value of 4%. In addition, significant spatial variations of the stellar flat fitting residual are found and corrected. Using repeated sources in the adjacent images, we checked and discovered internal consistency of about 1-2 mmag in all the filters. Using the PS1 magnitudes synthesized by Gaia DR3 BP/RP spectra by the synthetic photometry method, we found that the photometric calibration uniformity is about 1-2 mmag for all the bands, at a spatial resolution of 1.3 degree. A detailed comparison between the spectroscopy-based SCR and photometric-based SCR method magnitude offsets was performed, and we achieved an internal consistency precision of about 2 mmag or better with resolutions of 1.3 degree for all the filters. Which is mainly from the position-dependent errors of the E(B-V) used in SCR' method.

The Stellar Abundances and Galactic Evolution Survey (SAGES) -- -- I. General Description and the First Data Release (DR1)

The Stellar Abundances and Galactic Evolution Survey (SAGES) of the northern sky is a specifically-designed multi-band photometric survey aiming to provide reliable stellar parameters with accuracy comparable to those from low-resolution optical spectra. It was carried out with the 2.3-m Bok telescope of Steward Observatory and three other telescopes. The observations in the $u_s$ and $v_s$ passband produced over 36,092 frames of images in total, covering a sky area of $\sim9960$ degree$^2$. The median survey completeness of all observing fields for the two bands are of $u_{\rm s}=20.4$ mag and $v_s=20.3$ mag, respectively, while the limiting magnitudes with signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 100 are $u_s\sim17$ mag and $v_s\sim18$ mag, correspondingly. We combined our catalog with the data release 1 (DR1) of the first of Panoramic Survey Telescope And Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS1, PS1) catalog, and obtained a total of 48,553,987 sources which have at least one photometric measurement in each of the SAGES $u_s$ and $v_s$ and PS1 $grizy$ passbands, which is the DR1 of SAGES and it will be released in our paper. We compare our $gri$ point-source photometry with those of PS1 and found an RMS scatter of $\sim2$% in difference of PS1 and SAGES for the same band. We estimated an internal photometric precision of SAGES to be on the order of $\sim1$%. Astrometric precision is better than $0^{\prime\prime}.2$ based on comparison with the DR1 of Gaia mission. In this paper, we also describe the final end-user database, and provide some science applications.

The Wide-field Photometric System of the Nanshan One-meter Telescope

The Nanshan One-meter Wide-field Telescope (NOWT) is a prime focus system located at Nanshan Station of Xinjiang Astronomical Observatories (XAO). The field of view(FOV) was designed to 1.5 degree *1.5 degree, and Johnson-Cousins UBVRI system was chosen as the main Filter set. The telescope has been providing observation services for astronomers since Sept. 2013. Variable source searching and time-domain surveys are the main scientific goals. The system's test results are reported including linearity, dark current, bias, readout noise and gain of the CCD camera. The accurate instrumental calibration coefficients in UBVRI bands was driven with Landolt standard stars during photometric nights. Finally, the limiting magnitudes are given with signal-to-noise ratios and various exposure times for observers.

An optical and X-ray study of the contact binary, BH Cassiopeiae

We present the revised and high quality CCD time series observations in 2017 and 2018 of the W UMa-type contact binary BH~Cas. The combination of our new determinations of minimum times and those collected from the literatures reveal a long-term period increase with a rate of $\textit{dP/dt}\,=\,+3.27 \times 10^{-7} \textrm{d}\,\textrm{yr}^{-1}$, which can be accounted for by angular momentum transfer as the less-massive component loses its mass to the more massive one. One cyclical oscillation ($A'=0.00300$~days and $P'=20.09$~yrs) superimposed on the long-term period increase tendency is attributed to one additional object that orbits BH Cas. The low-resolution spectra of this source are observed at phase $\sim$0.0 and $\sim$0.5 in 2018 and 2019, and the spectral types are identified as K3V$\,\pm\,$1 and G8V$\,\pm\,$2. According to the luminosity contributions and spectra at these phases, the spectral type of the primary star is close to K3V$\,\pm\,$1. We infer a cool spot on the hotter and less-massive component to fit the asymmetry of light curves. In addition, changes in the location, temperature, and area of spots on the secondary star in different observations may indicate that the magnetic field activity of the secondary is more active than that of the primary. Such strong spot activities and optical flare are both detected at the same time from a W UMa-type star for the first time. With the \emph{XMM-Newton} observations taken in 2003 and 2012, the X-ray light curve is obtained and the X-ray spectra can be well described with a black-body or a bremsstrahlung model. The soft X-ray luminosity of BH Cas is estimated as 8.8\,--\,9.7$\,\times\,10^{30}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$.
