Global strong solutions to the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system in the exterior of a cylinder

In this paper, the global strong axisymmetric solutions for the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes system are established in the exterior of a cylinder subject to the Dirichlet boundary conditions. Moreover, the vacuum is allowed in these solutions. One of the key ingredients of the analysis is to obtain the ${L^{2}(s,T;L^{\infty}(Ω))}$ bound for the velocity field, where the axisymmetry of the solutions plays an important role.

Existence and Optimal Convergence Rates of Multi-dimensional Subsonic Potential Flows Through an Infinitely Long Nozzle with an Obstacle Inside

In this paper, the well-posedness and optimal convergence rates of subsonic irrotational flows through a three dimensional infinitely long nozzle with a smooth obstacle inside are established. More precisely, the global existence and uniqueness of the uniformly subsonic flow are obtained via variational formulation as long as the incoming mass flux is less than a critical value. Furthermore, with the aid of delicate choice of weight functions, we prove the optimal convergence rates of the flow at far fields via weighted energy estimates and Nash-Moser iteration.

Structural stability of the transonic shock problem in a divergent three dimensional axisymmetric perturbed nozzle

In this paper, we prove the structural stability of the transonic shocks for three dimensional axisymmetric Euler system with swirl velocity under the perturbations for the incoming supersonic flow, the nozzle boundary, and the exit pressure. Compared with the known results on the stability of transonic shocks, one of the major difficulties for the axisymmetric flows with swirls is that corner singularities near the intersection point of the shock surface and nozzle boundary and the artificial singularity near the axis appear simultaneously. One of the key points in the analysis for this paper is the introduction of an invertible Lagrangian transformation which can straighten the streamlines in the whole nozzle and help to represent the solutions of transport equations explicitly.

Existence and asymptotic behavior of large axisymmetric solutions for steady Navier-Stokes system in a pipe

In this paper, the existence and uniqueness of strong axisymmetric solutions with large flux for the steady Navier-Stokes system in a pipe are established even when the external force is also suitably large in $L^2$. Furthermore, the exponential convergence rate at far fields for the arbitrary steady solutions with finite $H^2$ distance to the Hagen-Poiseuille flows is established as long as the external forces converge exponentially at far fields. The key point to get the existence of these large solutions is the refined estimate for the derivatives in the axial direction of the stream function and the swirl velocity, which exploits the good effect of the convection term. An important observation for the asymptotic behavior of general solutions is that the solutions are actually small at far fields when they have finite $H^2$ distance to the Hagen-Poiseuille flows. This makes the estimate for the linearized problem play a crucial role in studying the convergence of general solutions at far fields.

Uniform Structural stability of Hagen-Poiseuille flows in a pipe

In this paper, we prove the uniform nonlinear structural stability of Hagen-Poiseuille flows with arbitrary large fluxes in the axisymmetric case. This uniform nonlinear structural stability is the first step to study Liouville type theorem for steady solution of Navier-Stokes system in a pipe, which may play an important role in proving the existence of solutions for the Leray's problem, the existence of solutions of steady Navier-Stokes system with arbitrary flux in a general nozzle. A key step to establish nonlinear structural stability is the a priori estimate for the associated linearized problem for Navier-Stokes system around Hagen-Poiseuille flows. The linear structural stability is established as a consequence of elaborate analysis for the governing equation for the partial Fourier transform of the stream function. The uniform estimates are obtained based on the analysis for the solutions with different fluxes and frequencies. One of the most involved cases is to analyze the solutions with large flux and intermediate frequency, where the boundary layer analysis for the solutions plays a crucial role.

Structural stability of Supersonic solutions to the Euler-Poisson system

The well-posedness for the supersonic solutions of the Euler-Poisson system for hydrodynamical model in semiconductor devices and plasmas is studied in this paper. We first reformulate the Euler-Poisson system in the supersonic region into a second order hyperbolic-elliptic coupled system together with several transport equations. One of the key ingredients of the analysis is to obtain the well-posedness of the boundary value problem for the associated linearized hyperbolic-elliptic coupled system, which is achieved via a delicate choice of multiplier to gain energy estimate. The nonlinear structural stability of supersonic solution in the general situation is established by combining the iteration method with the estimate for hyperbolic-elliptic system and the transport equations together.

A note on optimal decay rates for the axisymmetric D-solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, we investigate the decay properties of an axisymmetric D-solutions to stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes systems in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We obtain the optimal decay rate $|{\bf u}(x)|\leq \frac{C}{|x|+1}$ for axisymmetric flows without swirl. Furthermore, we find a dichotomy for the decay rates of the swirl component $u_θ$, that is, either $O(\frac{1}{r+1})\leq |u_θ(r,z)|\leq \frac{C\log(r+1)}{(r+1)^{1/2}}$ or $|u_θ(r,z)|\leq \frac{C r}{(ρ+1)^3}$, where $ρ=\sqrt{r^2+z^2}$. In the latter case, we can further deduce that the other two components of the velocity field also attain the optimal decay rates: $|u_r(r,z)|+ |u_{z}(r,z)|\leq \frac{C}{ρ+1}$. We do not require any small assumptions on the forcing term.

Singularity formation and global existence of classical solutions for one dimensional rotating shallow water system

We study classical solutions of one dimensional rotating shallow water system which plays an important role in geophysical fluid dynamics. The main results contain two contrasting aspects. First, when the solution crosses certain threshold, we prove finite-time singularity formation for the classical solutions by studying the weighted gradients of Riemann invariants and utilizing conservation of physical energy. In fact, the singularity formation will take place for a large class of ${C}^1$ initial data whose gradients and physical energy can be arbitrarily small and higher order derivatives should be large. Second, when the initial data have constant potential vorticity, global existence of small classical solutions is established via studying an equivalent form of a quasilinear Klein-Gordon equation satisfying certain null conditions. In this global existence result, the smallness condition is in terms of the higher order Sobolev norms of the initial data.

Non-uniqueness of Admissible Weak Solutions to Compressible Euler Systems with Source Terms

We consider admissible weak solutions to the compressible Euler system with source terms, which include rotating shallow water system and the Euler system with damping as special examples. In the case of anti-symmetric sources such as rotations, for general piecewise Lipschitz initial densities and some suitably constructed initial momentum, we obtain infinitely many global admissible weak solutions. Furthermore, we construct a class of finite-states admissible weak solutions to the Euler system with anti-symmetric sources. Under the additional smallness assumption on the initial densities, we also obtain multiple global-in-time admissible weak solutions for more general sources including damping. The basic framework are based on the convex integration method developed by De~Lellis and Székelyhidi \cite{dLSz1,dLSz2} for the Euler system. One of the main ingredients of this paper is the construction of specified localized plane wave perturbations which are compatible with a given source term.

Two Dimensional Subsonic Euler Flow. Past a Wall or a Symmetric Body

The existence and uniqueness of two dimensional steady compressible Euler flows past a wall or a symmetric body are established. More precisely, given positive convex horizontal veloicty in the upstream, there exists a critical value $ρ_{cr}$ such that if the incoming density in the upstream is larger than $ρ_{cr}$, then there exists a subsonic flow past a wall. Furthermore, $ρ_{cr}$ is critical in the sense that there is no such subsonic flow if the density of the incoming flow is less than $ρ_{cr}$. The subsonic flows possess large vorticity and positive horizontal velocity above the wall except at the corner points on the boundary. Moreover, the existence and uniqueness of a two dimensional subsonic Euler flow past a symmetric body are also obtained when the incoming velocity field is a general small perturbation of a constant velocity field and the density of the incoming flow is larger than a critical value. The asymptotic behavior of the flows is obtained with the aid of some integral estimates for the velocity field and its far field states.

Two dimensional subsonic flows with self-gravitation in bounded domain

We investigate two dimensional steady Euler-Poisson system which describe the motion of compressible self-gravitating flows. The unique existence and stability of subsonic flows in a duct of finite length are obtained when prescribing the entropy at the entrance and the pressure at the exit. After introducing the stream function, the Euler-Poisson system can be decomposed into several transport equations and a second order nonlinear elliptic system. We discover an energy estimate for the associated elliptic system which is a key ingredient to prove the unique existence and stability of subsonic flow.

Subsonic solutions for steady Euler-Poisson system in two dimensional nozzles

In this paper, we prove the existence and stability of subsonic flows for steady full Euler-Poisson system in a two dimensional nozzle of finite length when imposing the electric potential difference on non-insulated boundary from a fixed point at the entrance, and prescribing the pressure at the exit of the nozzle. The Euler-Poisson system for subsonic flow is a hyperbolic-elliptic coupled nonlinear system. One of the crucial ingredient of this work is the combination of Helmholtz decomposition for the velocity field and stream function formulation together. In terms of the Helmholtz decomposition, the Euler-Poisson system is rewritten as a second order nonlinear elliptic system of three equations and transport equations for entropy and pseudo-Bernoulli's invariant. The associated elliptic system in a Lipschitz domain with nonlinear boundary conditions is solved with the help of the estimates developed in [2] based on its nice structure. The transport equations are resolved via the flow map induced by the stream function formulation. Furthermore, the delicate estimates for the flow map give the uniqueness of the solutions.

Subsonic flow for multidimensional Euler-Poisson system

We establish unique existence and stability of subsonic potential flow for steady Euler-Poisson system in a multidimensional nozzle of a finite length when prescribing the electric potential difference on non-insulated boundary from a fixed point at the exit, and prescribing the pressure at the exit of the nozzle. The Euler-Poisson system for subsonic potential flow can be reduced to a nonlinear elliptic system of second order. In this paper, we develop a technique to achieve a priori $C^{1,\alp}$ estimates of solutions to a quasi-linear second order elliptic system with mixed boundary conditions in a multidimensional domain with Lipschitz continuous boundary. Particularly, we discovered a special structure of the Euler-Poisson system which enables us to obtain $C^{1,\alp}$ estimates of velocity potential and electric potential functions, and this leads us to establish structural stability of subsonic flows for the Euler-Poisson system under perturbations of various data.

Three Dimensional Steady Subsonic Euler Flows in Bounded Nozzles

In this paper, we study the existence and uniqueness of three dimensional steady Euler flows in rectangular nozzles when prescribing normal component of momentum at both the entrance and exit. If, in addition, the normal component of the voriticity and the variation of Bernoulli's function at the exit are both zero, then there exists a unique subsonic potential flow when the magnitude of the normal component of the momentum is less than a critical number. As the magnitude of the normal component of the momentum approaches the critical number, the associated flows converge to a subsonic-sonic flow. Furthermore, when the normal component of vorticity and the variation of Bernoulli's function are both small, the existence of subsonic Euler flows is established. The proof of these results is based on a new formulation for the Euler system, a priori estimate for nonlinear elliptic equations with nonlinear boundary conditions, detailed study for a linear div-curl system, and delicate estimate for the transport equations.

We prove global in time dynamical stability of steady transonic shock solutions in divergent quasi-one-dimensional nozzles. We assume neither the smallness of the relative slope of the nozzle nor the weakness of the shock. Key ingredients of the proof are an exponentially decaying energy estimate for a linearized problem together with methods from \cite{LRXX}.

Asymptotic Behavior of Massless Dirac Waves in Schwarzschild geometry

In this paper, we show that massless Dirac waves in the Schwarzschild geometry decay to zero at a rate $t^{-2λ}$, where $λ=1, 2,...$ is the angular momentum. Our technique is to use Chandrasekhar's separation of variables whereby the Dirac equations split into two sets of wave equations. For the first set, we show that the wave decays as $t^{-2λ}$. For the second set, in general, the solutions tend to some explicit profile at the rate $t^{-2λ}$. The decay rate of solutions of Dirac equations is achieved by showing that the coefficient of the explicit profile is exactly zero. The key ingredients in the proof of the decay rate of solutions for the first set of wave equations are an energy estimate used to show the absence of bound states and zero energy resonance and the analysis of the spectral representation of the solutions. The proof of asymptotic behavior for the solutions of the second set of wave equations relies on careful analysis of the Green's functions for time independent Schrödinger equations associated with these wave equations.

Existence of Steady Subsonic Euler Flows through Infinitely Long Periodic Nozzles

In this paper, we study the global existence of steady subsonic Euler flows through infinitely long nozzles which are periodic in $x_1$ direction with the period $L$. It is shown that when the variation of Bernoulli function at some given section is small and mass flux is in a suitable regime, there exists a unique global subsonic flow in the nozzle. Furthermore, the flow is also periodic in $x_1$ direction with the period $L$. If, in particular, the Bernoulli function is a constant, we also get the existence of subsonic-sonic flows when the mass flux takes the critical value.
