CRB-Based Waveform Optimization for MIMO ISAC Systems With One-Bit ADCs

This paper studies the transmit waveform optimization for a quantized multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, where one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are employed to enable a low-cost and power-efficient hardware implementation. Focusing on the parameter estimation task, we propose two novel Cram\'er-Rao bounds (CRBs) for both point-like target (PT) and extended target (ET) to characterize the impact of quantization distortion on the estimation accuracy, where associated estimation methods are also developed to approach these theoretical CRBs. Moreover, with the goal of jointly enhancing the sensing and communication performances, we formulate the bi-criterion ISAC waveform optimization problem by minimizing the derived CRB objectives subject to a communication symbol error probability (SEP) constraint and a total power constraint, which, due to the high nonlinearity of the one-bit CRBs, are extremely nonconvex. To yield a high-quality suboptimal solution, we develop an efficient alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework which exploits the majorization-minimization (MM) technique to address the nonconvex issue. Simulation results verify that the one-bit CRBs are tight for characterizing the quantized estimation performance and the proposed estimation methods also show clear performance advantages over the existing benchmark schemes. Furthermore, a flexible trade-off between the CRB and the SEP performance can be achieved by the developed ADMM framework, demonstrating the effectiveness of the optimized ISAC waveform.

Industrial-Grade Sensor Simulation via Gaussian Splatting: A Modular Framework for Scalable Editing and Full-Stack Validation

Sensor simulation is pivotal for scalable validation of autonomous driving systems, yet existing Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) based methods face applicability and efficiency challenges in industrial workflows. This paper introduces a Gaussian Splatting (GS) based system to address these challenges: We first break down sensor simulator components and analyze the possible advantages of GS over NeRF. Then in practice, we refactor three crucial components through GS, to leverage its explicit scene representation and real-time rendering: (1) choosing the 2D neural Gaussian representation for physics-compliant scene and sensor modeling, (2) proposing a scene editing pipeline to leverage Gaussian primitives library for data augmentation, and (3) coupling a controllable diffusion model for scene expansion and harmonization. We implement this framework on a proprietary autonomous driving dataset supporting cameras and LiDAR sensors. We demonstrate through ablation studies that our approach reduces frame-wise simulation latency, achieves better geometric and photometric consistency, and enables interpretable explicit scene editing and expansion. Furthermore, we showcase how integrating such a GS-based sensor simulator with traffic and dynamic simulators enables full-stack testing of end-to-end autonomy algorithms. Our work provides both algorithmic insights and practical validation, establishing GS as a cornerstone for industrial-grade sensor simulation.

Performance Bounds and Degree-Distribution Optimization of Finite-Length BATS Codes

Batched sparse (BATS) codes were proposed as a reliable communication solution for networks with packet loss. In the finite-length regime, the error probability of BATS codes under belief propagation (BP) decoding has been studied in the literature and can be analyzed by recursive formulae. However, all existing analyses have not considered precoding or have treated the BATS code and the precode as two separate entities. In this paper, we analyze the word-wise error probability of finite-length BATS codes with a precode under joint decoding, including BP decoding and maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding. The joint BP decoder performs peeling decoding on a joint Tanner graph constructed from both the BATS and the precode Tanner graphs, and the joint ML decoder solves a single linear system with all linear constraints implied by the BATS code and the precode. We derive closed-form upper bounds on the error probability for both decoders. Specifically, low-density parity-check (LDPC) precodes are used for BP decoding, and any generic precode can be used for ML decoding. Even for BATS codes without a precode, the derived upper bound for BP decoding is more accurate than the approximate recursive formula, and easier to compute than the exact recursive formula. The accuracy of the two upper bounds has been verified by many simulation results. Based on the two upper bounds, we formulate an optimization problem to optimize the degree distribution of LDPC-precoded BATS codes, which improves BP performance, ML performance, or both. In our experiments, to transmit 128 packets over a line network with packet loss, the optimized LDPC-precoded BATS codes reduce the transmission overhead to less than 50% of that of standard BATS codes under comparable decoding complexity constraints.

Combating Interference for Over-the-Air Federated Learning: A Statistical Approach via RIS

Over-the-air computation (AirComp) integrates analog communication with task-oriented computation, serving as a key enabling technique for communication-efficient federated learning (FL) over wireless networks. However, owing to its analog characteristics, AirComp-enabled FL (AirFL) is vulnerable to both unintentional and intentional interference. In this paper, we aim to attain robustness in AirComp aggregation against interference via reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology to artificially reconstruct wireless environments. Concretely, we establish performance objectives tailored for interference suppression in wireless FL systems, aiming to achieve unbiased gradient estimation and reduce its mean square error (MSE). Oriented at these objectives, we introduce the concept of phase-manipulated favorable propagation and channel hardening for AirFL, which relies on the adjustment of RIS phase shifts to realize statistical interference elimination and reduce the error variance of gradient estimation. Building upon this concept, we propose two robust aggregation schemes of power control and RIS phase shifts design, both ensuring unbiased gradient estimation in the presence of interference. Theoretical analysis of the MSE and FL convergence affirms the anti-interference capability of the proposed schemes. It is observed that computation and interference errors diminish by an order of $\mathcal{O}\left(\frac{1}{N}\right)$ where $N$ is the number of RIS elements, and the ideal convergence rate without interference can be asymptotically achieved by increasing $N$. Numerical results confirm the analytical results and validate the superior performance of the proposed schemes over existing baselines.

Protograph-Based Batched Network Codes

Batched network codes (BNCs) are a low-complexity solution for communication through networks with packet loss. Although their belief propagation (BP) performance is proved to approach capacity in the asymptotic regime, there is no evidence indicating that their BP performance is equally good in the finite-length regime. In this paper, we propose a protograph-based construction for BNCs, referred to as protograph-based BNCs (P-BNCs), which significantly differs from existing BNCs in three aspects: 1) The vast majority of existing construction methods mainly focus on the degree distribution of check nodes (CNs), whereas P-BNCs not only specify the degree distributions of CNs and variable nodes (VNs) but also partially constrain the connectivity between CNs and VNs. 2) Traditional BNCs use a fixed degree distribution to generate all batches, making their performance highly sensitive to channel conditions, but P-BNCs achieve good performance under varying channel conditions due to their rate-compatible structures. 3) The construction of PBNCs takes into account joint BP decoding with a sparse precode, whereas traditional constructions typically do not consider a precode, or assume the presence of a precode that can recover a certain fraction of erasures. Thanks to these three improvements, P-BNCs not only have higher achievable rates under varying channel conditions, but more importantly, their BP performance is significantly improved at practical lengths.

Empowering Over-the-Air Personalized Federated Learning via RIS

Over-the-air computation (AirComp) integrates analog communication with task-oriented computation, serving as a key enabling technique for communication-efficient federated learning (FL) over wireless networks. However, AirComp-enabled FL (AirFL) with a single global consensus model fails to address the data heterogeneity in real-life FL scenarios with non-independent and identically distributed local datasets. In this paper, we introduce reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology to enable efficient personalized AirFL, mitigating the data heterogeneity issue. First, we achieve statistical interference elimination across different clusters in the personalized AirFL framework via RIS phase shift configuration. Then, we propose two personalized aggregation schemes involving power control and denoising factor design from the perspectives of first- and second-order moments, respectively, to enhance the FL convergence. Numerical results validate the superior performance of our proposed schemes over existing baselines.

Trainable Joint Channel Estimation, Detection and Decoding for MIMO URLLC Systems

The receiver design for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) systems can be a tough task due to the use of short channel codes and few pilot symbols. Consequently, error propagation can occur in traditional turbo receivers, leading to performance degradation. Moreover, the processing delay induced by information exchange between different modules may also be undesirable for URLLC. To address the issues, we advocate to perform joint channel estimation, detection, and decoding (JCDD) for MIMO URLLC systems encoded by short low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Specifically, we develop two novel JCDD problem formulations based on the maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion for Gaussian MIMO channels and sparse mmWave MIMO channels, respectively, which integrate the pilots, the bit-to-symbol mapping, the LDPC code constraints, as well as the channel statistical information. Both the challenging large-scale non-convex problems are then solved based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithms, where closed-form solutions are achieved in each ADMM iteration. Furthermore, two JCDD neural networks, called JCDDNet-G and JCDDNet-S, are built by unfolding the derived ADMM algorithms and introducing trainable parameters. It is interesting to find via simulations that the proposed trainable JCDD receivers can outperform the turbo receivers with affordable computational complexities.

Secure Outage Analysis for RIS-Aided MISO Systems with Randomly Located Eavesdroppers

In this paper, we consider the physical layer security of an RIS-assisted multiple-antenna communication system with randomly located eavesdroppers. The exact distributions of the received signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs) at the legitimate user and the eavesdroppers located according to a Poisson point process (PPP) are derived, and a closed-form expression for the secrecy outage probability (SOP) is obtained. It is revealed that the secrecy performance is mainly affected by the number of RIS reflecting elements, and the impact of the transmit antennas and transmit power at the base station is marginal. In addition, when the locations of the randomly located eavesdroppers are unknown, deploying the RIS closer to the legitimate user rather than to the base station is shown to be more efficient. We also perform an analytical study demonstrating that the secrecy diversity order depends on the path loss exponent of the RIS-to-ground links. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to verify the accuracy of these theoretical observations.

On Secrecy Performance of RIS-Assisted MISO Systems over Rician Channels with Spatially Random Eavesdroppers

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology is emerging as a promising technique for performance enhancement for next-generation wireless networks. This paper investigates the physical layer security of an RIS-assisted multiple-antenna communication system in the presence of random spatially distributed eavesdroppers. The RIS-to-ground channels are assumed to experience Rician fading. Using stochastic geometry, exact distributions of the received signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs) at the legitimate user and the eavesdroppers located according to a Poisson point process (PPP) are derived, and closed-form expressions for the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the ergodic secrecy capacity (ESC) are obtained to provide insightful guidelines for system design. First, the secrecy diversity order is obtained as $\frac{2}{\alpha_2}$, where $\alpha_2$ denotes the path loss exponent of the RIS-to-ground links. Then, it is revealed that the secrecy performance is mainly affected by the number of RIS reflecting elements, $N$, and the impact of the number of transmit antennas and transmit power at the base station is marginal. In addition, when the locations of the randomly located eavesdroppers are unknown, deploying the RIS closer to the legitimate user rather than to the base station is shown to be more efficient. Moreover, it is also found that the density of randomly located eavesdroppers, $\lambda_e$, has an additive effect on the asymptotic ESC performance given by $\log_2{\left({1}/{\lambda_e}\right)}$. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to verify the accuracy of these theoretical observations.

Robust MIMO Detection With Imperfect CSI: A Neural Network Solution

In this paper, we investigate the design of statistically robust detectors for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems subject to imperfect channel state information (CSI). A robust maximum likelihood (ML) detection problem is formulated by taking into consideration the CSI uncertainties caused by both the channel estimation error and the channel variation. To address the challenging discrete optimization problem, we propose an efficient alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based algorithm, which only requires calculating closed-form solutions in each iteration. Furthermore, a robust detection network RADMMNet is constructed by unfolding the ADMM iterations and employing both model-driven and data-driven philosophies. Moreover, in order to relieve the computational burden, a low-complexity ADMM-based robust detector is developed using the Gaussian approximation, and the corresponding deep unfolding network LCRADMMNet is further established. On the other hand, we also provide a novel robust data-aided Kalman filter (RDAKF)-based channel tracking method, which can effectively refine the CSI accuracy and improve the performance of the proposed robust detectors. Simulation results validate the significant performance advantages of the proposed robust detection networks over the non-robust detectors with different CSI acquisition methods.

Secure Outage Analysis of RIS-Assisted Communications with Discrete Phase Control

This correspondence investigates a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted wireless communication system with security threats. The RIS is deployed to enhance the secrecy outage probability (SOP) of the data sent to a legitimate user. By deriving the distributions of the received signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs) at the legitimate user and the eavesdropper, we formulate, in a closed-form expression, a tight bound for the SOP under the constraint of discrete phase control at the RIS. The SOP is characterized as a function of the number of antenna elements, $N$, and the number of discrete phase choices, $2^b$. It is revealed that the performance loss in terms of SOP due to the discrete phase control is ignorable for large $N$ when $b\!\geq\!3$. In addition, we explicitly quantify this SOP loss when binary phase shifts with $b\!=\!1$ is utilized. It is identified that increasing the RIS antenna elements by $1.6$ times can achieve the same SOP with binary phase shifts as that by the RIS with ideally continuous phase shifts. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify the accuracy of these theoretical observations.

Intelligent Reflection Enabling Technologies for Integrated and Green Internet-of-Everything Beyond 5G: Communication, Sensing, and Security

Internet-of-Everything (IoE) has gradually been recognized as an integral part of future wireless networks. In IoE, there can be an ultra-massive number of smart devices of various types to be served, imposing multi-dimensional requirements on wireless communication, sensing, and security. In this article, we provide a tutorial overview of the promising intelligent reflection communication (IRC) technologies, including reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and ambient backscatter communication (AmBC), to support the requirements of IoE applications beyond the fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication network. Specifically, we elaborate on the benefits of IRC-assisted IoE in the context of the space-air-ground integrated communications and green communications, which are regarded as key features of supporting future IoE application from society and industries. Furthermore, we envision that the IRC-assisted communication and sensing can mutually benefit each other and articulate multiple ways of enhancing the security in IoE by the IRC. Numerical results help illustrate the importance of the IRC in unfavorable secrecy environments. Finally, open research issues and challenges about the IRC-assisted IoE are presented.

RIS-Assisted Quasi-Static Broad Coverage for Wideband mmWave Massive MIMO Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can establish favorable wireless environments to combat the severe attenuation and blockages in millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands. However, to achieve the optimal enhancement of performance, the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) needs to be estimated at the cost of a large overhead that scales with the number of RIS elements and the number of users. In this paper, we design a quasi-static broad coverage at the RIS with the reduced overhead based on the statistical CSI. We propose a design framework to synthesize the power pattern reflected by the RIS that meets the customized requirements of broad coverage. For the communication of broadcast channels, we generalize the broad coverage of the single transmit stream to the scenario of multiple streams. Moreover, we employ the quasi-static broad coverage for a multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access (OFDMA) system, and derive the analytical expression of the downlink rate, which is proved to increase logarithmically with the power gain reflected by the RIS. By taking into account the overhead of channel estimation, the proposed quasi-static broad coverage even outperforms the design method that optimizes the RIS phases using the instantaneous CSI. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify these observations.

A Novel Iterative Soft-Decision Decoding Algorithm for RS-SPC Product Codes

This paper presents a generalized construction of RS-SPC product codes. A low-complexity joint-decoding scheme is proposed for these codes, in which a BP-based iterative decoding is performed based on the binary expansion of the whole parity-check matrix. Various powerful RS codes can be used as the component codes for RS-SPC product codes, which gives a good performance for local decoding (decode a single component codeword). The proposed BP-based iterative decoding is a global decoding, and it achieves an error-correcting capability comparable to codes of large blocklengths. This two-phase decoding scheme preserves the low decoding latency and complexity of the local decoding while achieves high reliability through the global decoding. The complexity of the proposed iterative decoding is discussed, and the simulation results show the proposed scheme offers a good trade-off between the complexity and the error performance.

ICINet: ICI-Aware Neural Network Based Channel Estimation for Rapidly Time-Varying OFDM Systems

A novel intercarrier interference (ICI)-aware orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) channel estimation network ICINet is presented for rapidly time-varying channels. ICINet consists of two components: a preprocessing deep neural subnetwork (PreDNN) and a cascaded residual learning-based neural subnetwork (CasResNet). By fully taking into account the impact of ICI, the proposed PreDNN first refines the initial channel estimates in a subcarrier-wise fashion. In addition, the CasResNet is designed to further enhance the estimation accuracy. The proposed cascaded network is compatible with any pilot patterns and robust against mismatched system configurations. Simulation results verify the superiority of ICINet over existing networks in terms of better performance and much less complexity.

Beamforming Optimization for IRS-Aided Communications with Transceiver Hardware Impairments

In this paper, we focus on intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multi-antenna communications with transceiver hardware impairments encountered in practice. In particular, we aim to maximize the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) taking into account the impact of hardware impairments, where the source transmit beamforming and the IRS reflect beamforming are jointly designed under the proposed optimization framework. To circumvent the non-convexity of the formulated design problem, we first derive a closed-form optimal solution to the source transmit beamforming. Then, for the optimization of IRS reflect beamforming, we obtain an upper bound to the optimal objective value via solving a single convex problem. A low-complexity minorization-maximization (MM) algorithm was developed to approach the upper bound. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed beamforming design is more robust to the hardware impairments than that of the conventional SNR maximized scheme. Moreover, compared to the scenario without deploying an IRS, the performance gain brought by incorporating the hardware impairments is more evident for the IRS-aided communications.

Beamforming Design with Fast Convergence for IRS-Aided Full-Duplex Communication

We study the beamforming optimization for an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided full-duplex (FD) communication system in this letter. Specifically, we maximize the sum rate of bi-directional transmissions by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming and the beamforming of the IRS reflection. A fast converging alternating algorithm is developed to tackle this problem. In each iteration of the proposed algorithm, the solutions to the transmit beamforming and the IRS reflect beamforming are obtained in a semi-closed form and a closed form, respectively. Compared to an existing method based on the Arimoto-Blahut algorithm, the proposed method achieves almost the same performance while enjoying much faster convergence and lower computational complexity.

Deep Learning Based Equalizer for MIMO-OFDM Systems with Insufficient Cyclic Prefix

In this paper, we study the equalization design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with insufficient cyclic prefix (CP). In particular, the signal detection performance is severely impaired by inter-carrier interference (ICI) and inter-symbol interference (ISI) when the multipath delay spread exceeding the length of CP. To tackle this problem, a deep learning-based equalizer is proposed for approximating the maximum likelihood detection. Inspired by the dependency between the adjacent subcarriers, a computationally efficient joint detection scheme is developed. Employing the proposed equalizer, an iterative receiver is also constructed and the detection performance is evaluated through simulations over measured multipath channels. Our results reveal that the proposed receiver can achieve significant performance improvement compared to two traditional baseline schemes.
