Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in 4-dimensional space-time

In this Letter we present a general covariant modified theory of gravity in $D\!=\!4$ space-time dimensions which propagates only the massless graviton and bypasses the Lovelock's theorem. The theory we present is formulated in $D\!>\!4$ dimensions and its action consists of the Einstein-Hilbert term with a cosmological constant, and the Gauss-Bonnet term multiplied by a factor $1/(D\!-\!4)$. The four-dimensional theory is defined as the limit $D\!\to\!4$. In this singular limit the Gauss-Bonnet invariant gives rise to non-trivial contributions to gravitational dynamics, while preserving the number of graviton degrees of freedom and being free from Ostrogradsky instability. We report several appealing new predictions of this theory, including the corrections to the dispersion relation of cosmological tensor and scalar modes, singularity resolution for spherically symmetric solutions, and others.

The Self-consistent Matter Coupling of a Class of Minimally Modified Gravity Theories

The self-consistent matter coupling is found in a broad class of minimally modified gravity theories which was discovered recently. All constraints in the theories remain first class and thus a graviton has only 2 local degrees of freedom. The cosmological solution of one of the examples in this class, the so-called square root gravity, exhibits a singularity freeness at high energy limit. At low energy limit, the theory smoothly connects to GR. A general feature of the theories in this class, with the self-consistent matter coupling discovered in our current work, is the non-trivial interaction among different components of matter sector. We have also checked the Hamiltonian structure of a scalar QED coupling to the square root gravity in the same manner. All constraints in the theory are first class too and thus the local U(1) gauge symmetry in scalar QED is preserved.

Phenomenology in type-I minimally modified gravity

We study cosmology in a class of minimally modified gravity (MMG) with two local gravitational degrees of freedom. We classify modified gravity theories into type-I and type-II: theories of type-I have an Einstein frame and can be recast by change of variables as general relativity (GR) with a non-minimal matter coupling, while theories of type-II have no Einstein frame. Considering a canonical transformation of the lapse, the 3-dimensional induced metric and their conjugate momenta we generate type-I MMG. We then show that phenomenological deviations from GR, such as the speed of gravitational waves $c_T$ and the effective gravitational constant for scalar perturbations $G_{\rm eff}$, are characterized by two functions of an auxiliary variable. We study the phenomenology of several models all having $c_T=1$. We obtain a scenario with $c_T=1$ in which the effective equation-of-state parameter of dark energy is different from $-1$ even though the cosmic acceleration is caused by a bare cosmological constant, and we find that it is possible to reconstruct the theory on choosing a selected time-evolution for the effective dark energy component.

Observational signatures of the parametric amplification of gravitational waves during reheating after inflation

We study the evolution of Gravitational Waves (GWs) during and after inflation as well as the resulting observational consequences in a Lorentz-violating massive gravity theory with one scalar (inflaton) and two tensor degrees of freedom. We consider two explicit examples of the tensor mass $m_g$ that depends either on the inflaton field $ϕ$ or on its time derivative $\dotϕ$, both of which lead to parametric excitations of GWs during reheating after inflation. The first example is Starobinsky's $R^2$ inflation model with a $ϕ$-dependent $m_g$ and the second is a low-energy-scale inflation model with a $\dotϕ$-dependent $m_g$. We compute the energy density spectrum $Ω_{\rm GW}(k)$ today of the GW background. In the Starobinsky's model, we show that the GWs can be amplified up to the detectable ranges of both CMB and DECIGO, but the bound from the big bang nucleosynthesis is quite tight to limit the growth. In low-scale inflation with a fast transition to the reheating stage driven by the potential $V(ϕ)=M^2 ϕ^2/2$ around $ϕ\approx M_{\rm pl}$ (where $M_{\rm pl}$ is the reduced Planck mass), we find that the peak position of $Ω_{\rm GW}(k)$ induced by the parametric resonance can reach the sensitivity region of advanced LIGO for the Hubble parameter of order 1 GeV at the end of inflation. Thus, our massive gravity scenario offers exciting possibilities for probing the physics of primordial GWs at various different frequencies.

Massive gravity and the suppression of anisotropies and gravitational waves in a matter-dominated contracting universe

We consider a modified gravity model with a massive graviton, but which nevertheless only propagates two gravitational degrees of freedom and which is free of ghosts. We show that non-singular bouncing cosmological background solutions can be generated. In addition, the mass term for the graviton prevents anisotropies from blowing up in the contracting phase and also suppresses the spectrum of gravitational waves compared to that of the scalar cosmological perturbations. This addresses two of the main problems of the matter bounce scenario.

Hamiltonian Analysis of an On-shell U(1) Gauge Field Theory

We perform the Hamiltonian analysis of an on-shell U(1) gauge field theory, in which the action is not invariant under local U(1) transformations but recovers the invariance when the equations of motion are imposed. We firstly apply Dirac's method of Hamiltonian analysis. We find one first-class constraint and two second-class constraints in the vector sector. It implies the photons have only two polarisations, at least at the classical level, although the standard U(1) symmetry is explicitly broken. The reduced Hamiltonian is bounded from below and the on-shell U(1) gauge field theory is free from ghosts at the classical level.

Large Hierarchy from Non-minimal Coupling

In this paper, a model is proposed to solve the gauge hierarchy problem. Beyond the standard model, we introduce an extra scalar field that non-minimally couples to gravity. The fundamental scale is set at weak scale and Planck scale emerges dynamically by a spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism.

A Class of Minimally Modified Gravity Theories

We investigate the Hamiltonian structure of a class of gravitational theories whose actions are linear in the lapse function. We derive the necessary and sufficient condition for a theory in this class to have two or less local physical degrees of freedom. As an application we then find several concrete examples of modified gravity theories in which the total number of local physical degrees of freedom in the gravity sector is two.

CMB Scale Dependent Non-Gaussianity from Massive Gravity during Inflation

We consider a cosmological model in which the tensor mode becomes massive during inflation, and study the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and polarization bispectra arising from the mixing between the scalar mode and the massive tensor mode during inflation. The model assumes the existence of a preferred spatial frame during inflation. The local Lorentz invariance is already broken in cosmology due to the existence of a preferred rest frame. The existence of a preferred spatial frame further breaks the remaining local SO(3) invariance and in particular gives rise to a mass in the tensor mode. At linear perturbation level, we minimize our model so that the vector mode remains non-dynamical, while the scalar mode is the same as the one in single-field slow-roll inflation. At non-linear perturbation level, this inflationary massive graviton phase leads to a sizeable scalar-scalar-tensor coupling, much greater than the scalar-scalar-scalar one, as opposed to the conventional case. This scalar-scalar-tensor interaction imprints a scale dependent feature in the CMB temperature and polarization bispectra. Very intriguingly, we find a surprizing similarity between the predicted scale dependence and the scale-dependent non-Gaussianities at low multipoles hinted in the WMAP and Planck results.

Inflationary Magnetogenesis with Broken Local U(1) Symmetry

We point out that a successful inflationary magnetogenesis could be realised if we break the local U(1) gauge symmetry during inflation. The effective electric charge is fixed as a fundamental constant, which allows us to obtain an almost scale invariant magnetic spectrum avoiding both the strong coupling and back reaction problems. We examine the corrections to the primordial curvature perturbation due to these stochastic electromagnetic fields and find that, at both linear and non-linear orders, the contributions from the electromagnetic field are negligible compared to those created from vacuum fluctuations. Finally, the U(1) gauge symmetry is restored at the end of inflation.

Effective Field Theory of Broken Spatial Diffeomorphisms

We study the low energy effective theory describing gravity with broken spatial diffeomorphism invariance. In the unitary gauge, the Goldstone bosons associated with broken diffeomorphisms are eaten and the graviton becomes a massive spin-2 particle with 5 well-behaved degrees of freedom. In this gauge, the most general theory is built with the lowest dimension operators invariant under only temporal diffeomorphisms. Imposing the additional shift and SO(3) internal symmetries, we analyze the perturbations on a FRW background. At linear perturbation level, the observables of this theory are characterized by five parameters, including the usual cosmological parameters and one additional coupling constant for the symmetry-breaking scalars. In the de Sitter and Minkowski limit, the three Goldstone bosons are supermassive and can be integrated out, leaving two massive tensor modes as the only propagating degrees of freedom. We discuss several examples relevant to theories of massive gravity.

Resonant Primordial Gravitational Waves Amplification

We propose a mechanism to evade the Lyth bound in models of inflation. We minimally extend the conventional single-field inflation model in general relativity (GR) to a theory with non-vanishing graviton mass in the very early universe. The modification primarily affects the tensor perturbation, while the scalar and vector perturbations are the same as the ones in GR with a single scalar field at least at the level of linear perturbation theory. During the reheating stage, the graviton mass oscillates coherently and leads to resonant amplification of the primordial tensor perturbation. After reheating the graviton mass vanishes and we recover GR.

SO(3) massive gravity

In this paper, we propose a massive gravity theory with 5 degrees of freedom. The mass term is constructed by 3 Stuckelberg scalar fields, which respects SO(3) symmetry in the fields' configuration. By the analysis on the linear cosmological perturbations, we found that such 5 d.o.f are free from ghost instability, gradiant instability, and tachyonic instability.

Massive Graviton on a Spatial Condensate

In this paper, we consider the spatial gauge symmetries spontaneously break down in GR, and graviton becomes massive on this spatial condensate background. Such model can be considered as a simplest example of massive gravity. We then apply our massive gravity theory to inflation, the graviton mass removes the IR divergence of the inflationary loop diagram.

Hamiltonian structure of scalar-tensor theories beyond Horndeski

We study the nature of constraints and the Hamiltonian structure in a scalar-tensor theory of gravity recently proposed by Gleyzes, Langlois, Piazza and Vernizzi (GLPV). For the simple case with A_5 = 0, namely when the canonical momenta conjugate to the spatial metric are linear in the extrinsic curvature, we prove that the number of physical degrees of freedom is three at fully nonlinear level, as claimed by GLPV. Therefore, while this theory extends Horndeski's scalar-tensor gravity theory, it is protected against additional degrees of freedom.

Topological Inflation with Large Tensor-to-scalar Ratio

BICEP2's detection on the primordial B-mode of CMB polarization suggests that inflation occurred around GUT scale, with the tensor-to-scalar ratio r~0.2. Inspired by this discosvery, we study the topological inflation which was driven by a double/single/no well potential. We show that with proper choice of parameters, all these three types of topological inflationary models could be consistent with the constraints from current observations.

On the cosmology of massive gravity

We present a review of cosmological solutions in non-linear massive gravity, focusing on the stability of perturbations. Although homogeneous and isotropic solutions have been found, these are now known to suffer from either Higuchi ghost or a new non-linear ghost instability. We discuss two approaches to alleviate this issue. By relaxing the symmetry of the background by e.g. breaking isotropy in the hidden sector, it is possible to accommodate a stable cosmological solution. Alternatively, extending the theory to allow for new dynamical degrees of freedom can also remove the conditions which lead to the instability. As examples for this case, we study the stability of self-accelerating solutions in the quasi-dilatonic extension and generic cosmological solutions in the varying mass extension. While the quasi-dilaton case turns out to be unstable, the varying mass case allows stable regimes of parameters. Viable self-accelerating solutions in the varying mass theory yet remain to be found.
