Experimental advances with the QICK (Quantum Instrumentation Control Kit) for superconducting quantum hardware

The QICK is a standalone open source qubit controller that was first introduced in 2022. In this follow-up work, we present recent experimental use cases that the QICK uniquely enabled for superconducting qubit systems. These include multiplexed signal generation and readout, mixer-free readout, pre-distorted fast flux pulses, and phase-coherent pulses for parametric operations, including high-fidelity parametric entangling gates. We explain in detail how the QICK was used to enable these experiments.

Tunable inductive coupler for high fidelity gates between fluxonium qubits

The fluxonium qubit is a promising candidate for quantum computation due to its long coherence times and large anharmonicity. We present a tunable coupler that realizes strong inductive coupling between two heavy-fluxonium qubits, each with $\sim50$MHz frequencies and $\sim5$ GHz anharmonicities. The coupler enables the qubits to have a large tuning range of $\textit{XX}$ coupling strengths ($-35$ to $75$ MHz). The $\textit{ZZ}$ coupling strength is $<3$kHz across the entire coupler bias range, and $<100$Hz at the coupler off-position. These qualities lead to fast, high-fidelity single- and two-qubit gates. By driving at the difference frequency of the two qubits, we realize a $\sqrt{i\mathrm{SWAP}}$ gate in $258$ns with fidelity $99.72\%$, and by driving at the sum frequency of the two qubits, we achieve a $\sqrt{b\mathrm{SWAP}}$ gate in $102$ns with fidelity $99.91\%$. This latter gate is only 5 qubit Larmor periods in length. We run cross-entropy benchmarking for over $20$ consecutive hours and measure stable gate fidelities, with $\sqrt{b\mathrm{SWAP}}$ drift ($2 \sigma$) $< 0.02\%$ and $\sqrt{i\mathrm{SWAP}}$ drift $< 0.08\%$.

Fast high-fidelity gates for galvanically-coupled fluxonium qubits using strong flux modulation

Long coherence times, large anharmonicity and robust charge-noise insensitivity render fluxonium qubits an interesting alternative to transmons. Recent experiments have demonstrated record coherence times for low-frequency fluxonia. Here, we propose a galvanic-coupling scheme with flux-tunable $\textit{XX}$ coupling. To implement a high-fidelity entangling $\sqrt{i\mathrm{SWAP}}$ gate, we modulate the strength of this coupling and devise variable-time identity gates to synchronize required single-qubit operations. Both types of gates are implemented using strong ac flux drives, lasting for only a few drive periods. We employ a theoretical framework capable of capturing qubit dynamics beyond the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) as required for such strong drives. We predict an open-system fidelity of $F>0.999$ for the $\sqrt{i\mathrm{SWAP}}$ gate under realistic conditions.

The QICK (Quantum Instrumentation Control Kit): Readout and control for qubits and detectors

We introduce a Xilinx RFSoC-based qubit controller (called the Quantum Instrumentation Control Kit, or QICK for short) which supports the direct synthesis of control pulses with carrier frequencies of up to 6 GHz. The QICK can control multiple qubits or other quantum devices. The QICK consists of a digital board hosting an RFSoC (RF System-on-Chip) FPGA \cite{zcu111}, custom firmware and software and an optional companion custom-designed analog front-end board. We characterize the analog performance of the system, as well as its digital latency, important for quantum error correction and feedback protocols. We benchmark the controller by performing standard characterizations of a transmon qubit. We achieve an average Clifford gate fidelity of $\mathcal{F}_{avg}=99.93\%$. All of the schematics, firmware, and software are open-source \cite{QICKrepo}.
