Generative Adversarial Estimation of Channel Covariance in Vehicular Millimeter Wave Systems

Enabling highly-mobile millimeter wave (mmWave) systems is challenging because of the huge training overhead associated with acquiring the channel knowledge or designing the narrow beams. Current mmWave beam training and channel estimation techniques do not normally make use of the prior beam training or channel estimation observations. Intuitively, though, the channel matrices are functions of the various elements of the environment. Learning these functions can dramatically reduce the training overhead needed to obtain the channel knowledge. In this paper, a novel solution that exploits machine learning tools, namely conditional generative adversarial networks (GAN), is developed to learn these functions between the environment and the channel covariance matrices. More specifically, the proposed machine learning model treats the covariance matrices as 2D images and learns the mapping function relating the uplink received pilots, which act as RF signatures of the environment, and these images. Simulation results show that the developed strategy efficiently predicts the covariance matrices of the large-dimensional mmWave channels with negligible training overhead.

Optimal Training for Residual Self-Interference for Full Duplex One-way Relays

Channel estimation and optimal training sequence design for full-duplex one-way relays are investigated. We propose a training scheme to estimate the residual self-interference (RSI) channel and the channels between nodes simultaneously. A maximum likelihood estimator is implemented with Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) algorithm. In the presence of RSI, the overall source-to-destination channel becomes an inter-symbol-interference (ISI) channel. With the help of estimates of the RSI channel, the destination is able to cancel the ISI through equalization. We derive and analyze the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) in closed-form by using the asymptotic properties of Toeplitz matrices. The optimal training sequence is obtained by minimizing the CRB. Extensions for the fundamental one-way relay model to the frequency-selective fading channels and the multiple relays case are also considered. For the former, we propose a training scheme to estimate the overall channel, and for the latter the CRB and the optimal number of relays are derived when the distance between the source and the destination is fixed. Simulations using LTE parameters corroborate our theoretical results.

Joint Scheduling and Power-Control for Delay Guarantees in Heterogeneous Cognitive Radios

An uplink multi secondary user (SU) cognitive radio system having average delay constraints as well as an interference constraint to the primary user (PU) is considered. If the interference channels between the SUs and the PU are statistically heterogeneous due to the different physical locations of the different SUs, the SUs will experience different delay performances. This is because SUs located closer to the PU transmit with lower power levels. Two dynamic scheduling-and-power-allocation policies that can provide the required average delay guarantees to all SUs irrespective of their locations are proposed. The first policy solves the problem when the interference constraint is an instantaneous one, while the second is for problems with long-term average interference constraints. We show that although the average interference problem is an extension to the instantaneous interference one, the solution is totally different. The two policies, derived using the Lyapunov optimization technique, are shown to be asymptotically delay optimal while satisfying the delay and interference constraints. Our findings are supported by extensive system simulations and shown to outperform existing policies as well as shown to be robust to channel estimation errors.

Throughput Optimization in Multi-Channel Cognitive Radios with Hard Deadline Constraints

In a cognitive radio scenario we consider a single secondary user (SU) accessing a multi-channel system. The SU senses the channels sequentially to detect if a primary user (PU) is occupying the channels, and stops its search to access a channel if it offers a significantly high throughput. The optimal stopping rule and power control problem is considered. The problem is formulated as a SU's throughput-maximization problem under a power, interference and packet delay constraints. We first show the effect of the optimal stopping rule on the packet delay, then solve this optimization problem for both the overlay system where the SU transmits only at the spectrum holes as well as the underlay system where tolerable interference (or tolerable collision probability) is allowed. We provide closed-form expressions for the optimal stopping rule, and show that the optimal power control strategy for this multi-channel problem is a modified water-filling approach. We extend the work to multiple SU scenario and show that when the number of SUs is large the complexity of the solution becomes smaller than that of the single SU case. We discuss the application of this problem in typical networks where packets arrive simultaneously and have the same departure deadline. We further propose an online adaptation policy to the optimal stopping rule that meets the packets' hard-deadline constraint and, at the same time, gives higher throughput than the offline policy.

Unified Sum-BER Performance Analysis of AF MIMO Beamforming in Two-Way Relay Networks

Unified performance analysis is carried out for amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) beamforming (BF) two-way relay networks in Rayleigh fading with five different relaying protocols including two novel protocols for better performance. As a result, a novel closed-form sum-bit error rate (BER) expression is presented in a unified expression for all protocols. A new closed-form high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) performance is also obtained in a single expression, and an analytical high-SNR gap expression between the five protocols is provided. We compare the performance of the five relaying protocols with respect to sum-BER with appropriately normalized rate and power, and show that the proposed protocol with four time slots outperforms other protocols when transmit powers from two sources are sufficiently different, and the one with three time slots dominates other protocols when multiple relay antennas are used, at high-SNR.
