Hopf-Galois structures on cyclic extensions and skew braces with cyclic multiplicative group

Let $G$ and $N$ be two finite groups of the same order. It is well-known that the existences of the following are equivalent: (a) a Hopf-Galois structure of type $N$ on any Galois $G$-extension; (b) a skew brace with additive group $N$ and multiplicative group $G$; (c) a regular subgroup isomorphic to $G$ in the holomorph of $N$. We shall say that $(G,N)$ is realizable when any of the above exists. Fixing $N$ to be a cyclic group, W. Rump (2019) has determined the groups $G$ for which $(G,N)$ is realizable. In this paper, fixing $G$ to be a cyclic group instead, we shall give a complete characterization of the groups $N$ for which $(G,N)$ is realizable.

The multiple holomorph of split metacyclic $p$-groups

Given any group $G$, the normalizer $\mathrm{Hol}(G)$ of the subgroup of left translations in the group of all permutations on $G$ is called the holomorph, and the normalizer $\mathrm{NHol}(G)$ of $\mathrm{Hol}(G)$ in turn is called the multiple holomorph. The quotient $T(G) = \mathrm{NHol}(G)/\mathrm{Hol}(G)$ has been computed for various families of groups $G$ in the literature. In this paper, we shall supplement the existing results by considering finite split metacyclic $p$-groups $G $ with $p$ an odd prime. We are able to give a closed formula for the order of $T(G)$ when $G$ satisfies some mild conditions. Our work gives a new family of groups $G$ for which $T(G)$ is not a $2$-group.

The number of quartic $D_4$-fields with monogenic cubic resolvent ordered by conductor

In this paper, we consider maximal and irreducible quartic orders which arise from integral binary quartic forms, via the construction of Birch and Merriman, and whose field of fractions is a quartic $D_4$-field. By a theorem of M. Wood, such quartic orders may be regarded as quartic $D_4$-fields whose ring of integers has a monogenic cubic resolvent. We shall give the asymptotic number of such objects when ordered by conductor, as well as estimate the asymptotic number of such objects when ordered by discriminant.

Finite skew braces with isomorphic non-abelian characteristically simple additive and circle groups

A skew brace is a triplet $(A,\cdot,\circ)$, where $(A,\cdot)$ and $(A,\circ)$ are groups such that the brace relation $x\circ (y\cdot z) = (x\circ y)\cdot x^{-1}\cdot (x\circ z)$ holds for all $x,y,z\in A$. In this paper, we study the number of finite skew braces $(A,\cdot,\circ)$, up to isomorphism, such that $(A,\cdot)$ and $(A,\circ)$ are both isomorphic to $T^n$ with $T$ non-abelian simple and $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We prove that it is equal to the number of unlabeled directed graphs on $n+1$ vertices, with one distingusihed vertex, and whose underlying undirected graph is a tree. In particular, it depends only on $n$ and is independent of $T$.

Hopf-Galois structures on finite extensions with almost simple Galois group

In this paper, we study the Hopf-Galois structures on a finite Galois extension whose Galois group $G$ is an almost simple group in which the socle $A$ has prime index $p$. Each Hopf-Galois structure is associated to a group $N$ of the same order as $G$. We give necessary criteria on these $N$ in terms of their group-theoretic properties, and determine the number of Hopf-Galois structures associated to $A\times C_p$, where $C_p$ is the cyclic group of order $p$.

The multiple holomorph of a semidirect product of groups having coprime exponents

Given any group $G$, the multiple holomorph $\mathrm{NHol}(G)$ is the normalizer of the holomorph $\mathrm{Hol}(G) = ρ(G)\rtimes \mathrm{Aut}(G)$ in the group of all permutations of $G$, where $ρ$ denotes the right regular representation. The quotient $T(G) = \mathrm{NHol}(G)/\mathrm{Hol}G)$ has order a power of $2$ in many of the known cases, but there are exceptions. We shall give a new method of constructing elements (of odd order) in $T(G)$ when $G=A\rtimes C_d$, where $A$ is a group of finite exponent coprime to $d$ and $C_d$ is the cyclic group of order $d$.

On the multiple holomorph of groups of squarefree or odd prime power order

Let $G$ be a group and write $\mbox{Perm}(G)$ for its symmetric group. Define $\mbox{Hol}(G)$ to be the holomorph of $G$, regarded as a subgroup of $\mbox{Perm}(G)$, and let $\mbox{NHol}(G)$ denote its normalizer. The quotient $T(G) = \mbox{NHol}(G)/\mbox{Hol}(G)$ has been computed for various families of groups $G$, and in most of the known cases, it turns out to be elementary $2$-abelian, except for two groups of order $16$ and some groups of odd prime power order and nilpotency class two. In this paper, we shall show that $T(G)$ is elementary $2$-abelian for all finite groups $G$ of squarefree order, and that $T(G)$ is not a $2$-group for certain finite $p$-groups $G$ of nilpotency class at most $p-1$.

On the multiple holomorph of a finite almost simple group

Let $G$ be a group. Let $\mathrm{Perm}(G)$ denote its symmetric group and write $\mathrm{Hol}(G)$ for the normalizer of the subgroup of left translations in $\mathrm{Perm}(G)$. The multiple holomorph $\mathrm{NHol}(G)$ of $G$ is in turn defined to be the normalizer of $\mathrm{Hol}(G)$ in $\mathrm{Perm}(G)$. In this paper, we shall show that the quotient group $\mathrm{NHol}(G)/\mathrm{Hol}(G)$ has order two when $G$ is finite and almost simple. As an application of our techniques, we shall also develop a method to count the number of Hopf-Galois structures of isomorphic type on a finite almost simple extension in terms of fixed point free endomorphisms.

On the self-duality of rings of integers in tame and abelian extensions

Let $L/K$ be a tame and Galois extension of number fields with group $G$. It is well-known that any ambiguous ideal in $L$ is locally free over $\mathcal{O}_KG$ (of rank one), and so it defines a class in the locally free class group of $\mathcal{O}_KG$, where $\mathcal{O}_K$ denotes the ring of integers of $K$. In this paper, we shall study the relationship among the classes arising from the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_L$ of $L$, the inverse different $\mathfrak{D}_{L/K}^{-1}$ of $L/K$, and the square root of the inverse different $A_{L/K}$ of $L/K$ (if it exists), in the case that $G$ is abelian. They are naturally related because $A_{L/K}^2 = \mathfrak{D}_{L/K}^{-1} = \mathcal{O}_L^*$, and $A_{L/K}$ is special because $A_{L/K} = A_{L/K}^*$, where $*$ denotes dual with respect to the trace of $L/K$.

Binary quartic forms with bounded invariants and small Galois groups

In this paper, we consider integral and irreducible binary quartic forms whose Galois group is isomorphic to a subgroup of the dihedral group of order eight. We first show that the set of all such forms is a union of families indexed by integral binary quadratic forms $f(x,y)$ of non-zero discriminant. Then, we shall enumerate the $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of all such forms associated to a fixed $f(x,y)$.

Non-existence of Hopf-Galois structures and bijective crossed homomorphisms

By work of C. Greither and B. Pareigis as well as N. P. Byott, the enumeration of Hopf-Galois structures on a Galois extension of fields with Galois group $G$ may be reduced to that of regular subgroups of $\mbox{Hol}(N)$ isomorphic to $G$ as $N$ ranges over all groups of order $|G|$, where $\mbox{Hol}(-)$ denotes the holomorph. In this paper, we shall give a description of such subgroups of $\mbox{Hol}(N)$ in terms of bijective crossed homomorphisms $G\longrightarrow N$, and then use it to study two questions related to non-existence of Hopf-Galois structures.

Galois module structure of the square root of the inverse different over maximal orders

Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ and let $G$ be a \mbox{finite group of} odd order. Given a $G$-Galois $K$-algebra $K_h$, let $A_h$ be the square root of the inverse different of $K_h/K$, which exists by Hilbert's formula. If $K_h/K$ is weakly ramified, then $A_h$ is locally free over $\mathcal{O}_{K}G$ by a result of B. Erez, in which case it determines a class in the locally free class group $\mbox{Cl}(\mathcal{O}_KG)$ of $\mathcal{O}_KG$. Such a class in $\mbox{Cl}(\mathcal{O}_KG)$ is said to be $A$-realizable, and tame $A$-realizable if $K_h/K$ is tame. Let $\mathcal{A}(\mathcal{O}_KG)$ and $\mathcal{A}^t(\mathcal{O}_KG)$ denote the sets of all $A$-realizable classes and tame $A$-realizable classes, respectively. For $G$ abelian, we will show that the two sets $\mathcal{A}(\mathcal{O}_KG)$ and $\mathcal{A}^t(\mathcal{O}_KG)$ are equal when extended scalars to the maximal order in $KG$.

Realizable classes and embedding problems

Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ and let $G$ be a finite group. Given a $G$-Galois $K$-algebra $K_h$, let $\mathcal{O}_h$ denote its ring of integers. If $K_h/K$ is tame, then a classical theorem of E. Noether implies that $\mathcal{O}_h$ is locally free over $\mathcal{O}_KG$ and hence defines a class in the locally free class group of $\mathcal{O}_KG$. For $G$ abelian, by combining the work of J. Brinkhuis and L. McCulloh, we prove that the structure of the collection of all such classes is related to the study of embedding problems.

On the realizable classes of the square root of the inverse different in the unitary class group

Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ and let $G$ be a finite abelian group of odd order. Given a $G$-Galois $K$-algebra $K_h$, let $A_h$ denote its square root of the inverse different, which exists by Hilbert's formula. If $K_h/K$ is weakly ramified, then the pair $(A_h,Tr_h)$ is locally $G$-isometric to $(\mathcal{O}_KG,t_K)$ and hence defines a class in the unitary class group $\mbox{UCl}(\mathcal{O}_KG)$ of $\mathcal{O}_KG$. Here $Tr_h$ denotes the trace of $K_h/K$ and $t_K$ the symmetric bilinear form on $\mathcal{O}_KG$ for which $t_K(s,t)=δ_{st}$ for all $s,t\in G$. We study the collection of all such classes and show that a subset of them is in fact a subgroup of $\mbox{UCl}(\mathcal{O}_KG)$.
