Superdiffusive fractional dynamics: Unveiling regularity results in systems with general positive self-adjoint operators

We investigate the following fractional order in time Cauchy problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \mathbb{D}_{t}^{α}u(t)+Au(t)=f(u(t)), & 1<α<2, \\ u(0)=u_{0},\,\,\,u^{\prime }(0)=u_{1}. & \end{cases}% \end{equation*}% where $\mathbb{D}_{t}^{α}u(\cdot )$ is the Caputo time-fractional derivative of order $α\in (1, 2)$ of the function $u$. Such problems are increasingly used in concrete models in applied sciences, notably phenomena with memory effects. We obtain results on existence and regularity of weak and strong energy solutions assuming that $A$ is any positive self-adjoint operator in a Hilbert space, when the nonlinearity $f\in C^{1}({\mathbb{R}}) $ satisfies suitable growth conditions. Our aim is to obtain regularity results {without} assuming that the operator $A$ has compact resolvent readily extending our recent results from our previous paper \cite{AGKW}. Examples of operators $A$ are considered, mainly differential operators such as Schrödinger operators, as well as various nonlocal operators.

Global well-posedness and convergence to equilibrium for the Abels-Garcke-Grün model with nonlocal free energy

We investigate the nonlocal version of the Abels-Garcke-Grün (AGG) system, which describes the motion of a mixture of two viscous incompressible fluids. This consists of the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard system characterized by concentration-dependent density and viscosity, and an additional flux term due to interface diffusion. In particular, the Cahn-Hilliard dynamics of the concentration (phase-field) is governed by the aggregation/diffusion competition of the nonlocal Helmholtz free energy with singular (logarithmic) potential and constant mobility. We first prove the existence of global strong solutions in general two-dimensional bounded domains and their uniqueness when the initial datum is strictly separated from the pure phases. The key points are a novel well-posedness result of strong solutions to the nonlocal convective Cahn-Hilliard equation with singular potential and constant mobility under minimal integral assumption on the incompressible velocity field, and a new two-dimensional interpolation estimate for the $L^4(Ω)$ control of the pressure in the stationary Stokes problem. Secondly, we show that any weak solution, whose existence was already known, is globally defined, enjoys the propagation of regularity and converges towards an equilibrium (i.e., a stationary solution) as $t\rightarrow \infty$. Furthermore, we demonstrate the uniqueness of strong solutions and their continuous dependence with respect to general (not necessarily separated) initial data in the case of matched densities and unmatched viscosities (i.e., the nonlocal model H with variable viscosity, singular potential and constant mobility). Finally, we provide a stability estimate between the strong solutions to the nonlocal AGG model and the nonlocal Model H in terms of the difference of densities.

A unified framework for optimal control of fractional in time subdiffusive semilinear PDEs

We consider optimal control of fractional in time (subdiffusive, i.e., for $% 0<γ<1$) semilinear parabolic PDEs associated with various notions of diffusion operators in an unifying fashion. Under general assumptions on the nonlinearity we{~\textsf{first show}} the existence and regularity of solutions to the forward and the associated {\textsf{backward (adjoint)}} problems. In the second part, we prove existence of optimal {\textsf{controls% }} and characterize the associated {\textsf{first order}} optimality conditions. Several examples involving fractional in time (and some fractional in space diffusion) equations are described in detail. The most challenging obstacle we overcome is the failure of the\ semigroup property for the semilinear problem in any scaling of (frequency-domain) Hilbert spaces.

On some degenerate non-local parabolic equation associated with the fractional $p$-Laplacian

We consider a degenerate parabolic equation associated with the fractional $% p $-Laplace operator $\left( -Δ\right) _{p}^{s}$\ ($p\geq 2$, $s\in \left( 0,1\right) $) and a monotone perturbation growing like $\left\vert s\right\vert ^{q-2}s,$ $q>p$ and with bad sign at infinity as $\left\vert s\right\vert \rightarrow \infty $. We show the existence of locally-defined strong solutions to the problem with any initial condition $u_{0}\in L^{r}(Ω)$ where $r\geq 2$ satisfies $r>N(q-p)/sp$. Then, we prove that finite time blow-up is possible for these problems in the range of parameters provided for $r,p,q$ and the initial datum $u_0$.

On nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes systems in two dimensions

We consider a diffuse interface model which describes the motion of an incompressible isothermal mixture of two immiscible fluids. This model consists of the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a convective nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation. Several results were already proven by two of the present authors. However, in the two-dimensional case, the uniqueness of weak solutions was still open. Here we establish such a result even in the case of degenerate mobility and singular potential. Moreover, we show the strong-weak uniqueness in the case of viscosity depending on the order parameter, provided that either the mobility is constant and the potential is regular or the mobility is degenerate and the potential is singular. In the case of constant viscosity, on account of the uniqueness results we can deduce the connectedness of the global attractor whose existence was obtained in a previous paper. The uniqueness technique can be adapted to show the validity of a smoothing property for the difference of two trajectories which is crucial to establish the existence of an exponential attractor. The latter is established even in the case of variable viscosity, constant mobility and regular potential.

Transmission problems with nonlocal boundary conditions and rough dynamic interfaces

We consider a transmission problem consisting of a semilinear parabolic equation in a general non-smooth setting with emphasis on rough interfaces which bear a fractal-like geometry and nonlinear dynamic (possibly, nonlocal)\ boundary conditions along the interface. We give a unified framework for existence of strong solutions, existence of finite dimensional attractors and blow-up phenomena for solutions under general conditions on the bulk and interfacial nonlinearities with competing behavior at infinity.

On a regularized family of models for the full Ericksen-Leslie system

We consider a general family of regularized systems for the full Ericksen-Leslie model for the hydrodynamics of liquid crystals in $n$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifolds, $n$=2,3. The system we consider consists of a regularized family of Navier-Stokes equations (including the Navier Stokes-$α$-like equation, the Leray-$α$ equation, the Modified Leray-$α$ equation, the Simplified Bardina model, the Navier Stokes-Voigt model and the Navier-Stokes equation) for the fluid velocity $u$ suitably coupled with a parabolic equation for the director field $d$. We establish existence, stability and regularity results for this family. We also show the existence of a finite dimensional global attractor for our general model, and then establish sufficiently general conditions under which each trajectory converges to a single equilibrium by means of a Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality.

Long-term behavior of reaction-diffusion equations with nonlocal boundary conditions on rough domains

We investigate the long term behavior in terms of finite dimensional global and exponential attractors, as time goes to infinity, of solutions to a semilinear reaction-diffusion equation on non-smooth domains subject to nonlocal Robin boundary conditions, characterized by the presence of fractional diffusion on the boundary. Our results are of general character and apply to a large class of irregular domains, including domains whose boundary is Holder continuous and domains which have fractal-like geometry. In addition to recovering most of the existing results on existence, regularity, uniqueness, stability, attractor existence, and dimension, for the well-known reaction-diffusion equation in smooth domains, the framework we develop also makes possible a number of new results for all diffusion models in other non-smooth settings.

Singular limits of Voigt models in fluid dynamics

We investigate the long-term behavior, as a certain regularization parameter vanishes, of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Voigt model of a viscoelastic incompressible fluid. We prove the existence of global and exponential attractors of optimal regularity. We then derive explicit upper bounds for the dimension of these attractors in terms of the three-dimensional Grashof number and the regularization parameter. Finally, we also prove convergence of the (strong) global attractor of the 3D Navier-Stokes-Voigt model to the (weak) global attractor of the 3D Navier-Stokes equation. Our analysis improves and extends recent results obtained by Kalantarov and Titi in [31].

Coleman-Gurtin type equations with dynamic boundary conditions

We present a new formulation and generalization of the classical theory of heat conduction with or without fading memory which includes the usual heat equation subject to a dynamic boundary condition as a special case. We investigate the well-posedness of systems which consist of Coleman-Gurtin type equations subject to dynamic boundary conditions, also with memory. Nonlinear terms are defined on the interior of the domain and on the boundary and subject to either classical dissipation assumptions, or to a nonlinear balance condition in the sense of [11]. Additionally, we do not assume that the interior and the boundary share the same memory kernel.

On a regularized family of models for homogeneous incompressible two-phase flows

We consider a general family of regularized models for incompressible two-phase flows based on the Allen-Cahn formulation in n-dimensional compact Riemannian manifolds for n=2,3. The system we consider consists of a regularized family of Navier-Stokes equations (including the Navier-Stokes-α-like model, the Leray-α model, the Modified Leray-α model, the Simplified Bardina model, the Navier-Stokes-Voight model and the Navier-Stokes model) for the fluid velocity suitably coupled with a convective Allen-Cahn equation for the (phase) order parameter. We give a unified analysis of the entire three-parameter family of two-phase models using only abstract mapping properties of the principal dissipation and smoothing operators, and then use assumptions about the specific form of the parametrizations, leading to specific models, only when necessary to obtain the sharpest results. We establish existence, stability and regularity results, and some results for singular perturbations, which as special cases include the inviscid limit of viscous models and the α->0 limit in α-models. Then, we also show the existence of a global attractor and exponential attractor for our general model, and then establish precise conditions under which each trajectory converges to a single equilibrium by means of a LS inequality. We also derive new results on the existence of global and exponential attractors for the regularized family of Navier-Stokes equations and magnetohydrodynamics models which improve and complement the results of Holst et. al. [J. Nonlinear Science 20, 2010, 523-567]. Finally, our analysis is applied to certain regularized Ericksen-Leslie (RSEL) models for the hydrodynamics of liquid crystals in n-dimensional compact Riemannian manifolds.

Nonlinear elliptic problems with dynamical boundary conditions of reactive and reactive-diffusive type

We investigate classical solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations with two classes of dynamical boundary conditions, of reactive and reactive-diffusive type. In the latter case it is shown that well-posedness is to a large extent independent of the coupling with the elliptic equation. For both types of boundary conditions we consider blow-up, global existence, global attractors and convergence to single equilibria.

Semigroups of Operators on Spaces of Fuzzy-Number-Valued Functions with Applications to Fuzzy Differential Equations

In this paper we introduce and study semigroups of operators on spaces of fuzzy-number-valued functions, and various applications to fuzzy differential equations are presented. Starting from the space of fuzzy numbers, many new spaces sharing the same properties are introduced. We derive basic operator theory results on these spaces and new results in the theory of semigroups of linear operators on fuzzy-number kind spaces. The theory we develop is used to solve classical fuzzy systems of differential equations, including, for example, the fuzzy Cauchy problem and the fuzzy wave equation. These tools allow us to obtain explicit solutions to fuzzy initial value problems which bear explicit formulas similar to the crisp case, with some additional fuzzy terms which in the crisp case disappear. The semigroup method displays a clear advantage over other methods available in the literature (i.e., the level set method, the differential inclusions method and other "fuzzification" methods of the real-valued solution) in the sense that the solutions can be easily constructed, and that the method can be applied to a larger class of fuzzy differential equations that can be transformed into an abstract Cauchy problem.

Longtime behavior of nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equations

Here we consider the nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with constant mobility in a bounded domain. We prove that the associated dynamical system has an exponential attractor, provided that the potential is regular. In order to do that a crucial step is showing the eventual boundedness of the order parameter uniformly with respect to the initial datum. This is obtained through an Alikakos-Moser type argument. We establish a similar result for the viscous nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with singular (e.g., logarithmic) potential. In this case the validity of the so-called separation property is crucial. We also discuss the convergence of a solution to a single stationary state. The separation property in the nonviscous case is known to hold when the mobility degenerates at the pure phases in a proper way and the potential is of logarithmic type. Thus, the existence of an exponential attractor can be proven in this case as well.

Global attractor for a nonlocal model for biological aggregation

We investigate the long term behavior in terms of global attractors, as time goes to infinity, of solutions to a continuum model for biological aggregations in which individuals experience long-range social attraction and short range dispersal. We consider the aggregation equation with both degenerate and non-degenerate diffusion in a bounded domain subject to various boundary conditions. In the degenerate case, we prove the existence of the global attractor and derive some optimal regularity results. Furthermore, in the non-degenerate case we give a complete structural characterization of the global attractor, and also discuss the convergence of any bounded solutions to steady states. Finally, the existence of an exponential attractor is also demonstrated for sufficiently smooth kernels in the case of non-degenerate diffusion.

Hyperbolic Relaxation of Reaction Diffusion Equations with Dynamic Boundary Conditions

Under consideration is the hyperbolic relaxation of a semilinear reaction-diffusion equation on a bounded domain, subject to a dynamic boundary condition. We also consider the limit parabolic problem with the same dynamic boundary condition. Each problem is well-posed in a suitable phase space where the global weak solutions generate a Lipschitz continuous semiflow which admits a bounded absorbing set. We prove the existence of a family of global attractors of optimal regularity. After fitting both problems into a common framework, a proof of the upper-semicontinuity of the family of global attractors is given as the relaxation parameter goes to zero. Finally, we also establish the existence of exponential attractors.

Sup-norm estimates for parabolic systems with dynamic boundary conditions

We consider parabolic systems with nonlinear dynamic boundary conditions, for which we give a rigorous derivation. Then, we give them several physical interpretations which includes an interpretation for the porous-medium equation, and for certain reaction-diffusion systems that occur in mathematical biology and ecology. We devise several strategies which imply (uniform)}$L^{p} and}$L^{\infty}$ estimates on the solutions for the initial value problems considered.
