Naturality in real Heegaard Floer theory

In a previous paper we defined real Heegaard Floer homology, an invariant of three-manifolds equipped with involutions. Here we prove that real Heegaard Floer homology is natural, and that it admits an action of the equivariant mapping class group. We also establish naturality of real link Floer homology and real sutured Floer homology, and give a definition of involutive real Heegaard Floer homology.

Undecidability problems for semifree DG algebras

We prove that the stable tame isomorphism, quasi-isomorphism, and derived Morita equivalence problems for semifree noncommutative differential graded algebras (DGAs) are all undecidable. This resolves half of Problem 5.16 from the K3 Problem List in Low-Dimensional Topology. We present two solutions, both obtained (essentially autonomously) by Gemini Deep Think / Aletheia.

From knots to four-manifolds

This is a survey article about the connections between knot theory and four-dimensional topology. Every four-manifold can be represented in terms of a link, by a Kirby diagram. This point of view has led to progress in computing invariants of smooth four-manifolds that can detect exotic structures. We explain how this was done in two contexts: Heegaard Floer theory and skein lasagna modules. We also describe a program to understand four-manifolds through the properties of knots on their boundaries.

Canonical orientations in Heegaard Floer theory

We set up Heegaard Floer theory over the integers, using canonical orientations coming from coupled Spin structures on the Lagrangian tori. We prove naturality of Heegaard Floer homology, sutured Floer homology, and link Floer homology over $\mathbb{Z}$. We give a new proof of the surgery exact triangle in this context, as well as a definition of involutive Heegaard Floer homology over $\mathbb{Z}$.

Real Heegaard Floer Homology

We define an invariant of three-manifolds with an involution with non-empty fixed point set of codimension $2$; in particular, this applies to double branched covers over knots. Our construction gives the Heegaard Floer analogue of Li's real monopole Floer homology. It is a special case of a real version of Lagrangian Floer homology, which may be of independent interest to symplectic geometers. The Euler characteristic of the real Heegaard Floer homology is the analogue of Miyazawa's invariant, and can be computed combinatorially for all knots.

Lectures on the triangulation conjecture

We outline the proof that non-triangulable manifolds exist in any dimension greater than four. The arguments involve homology cobordism invariants coming from the Pin(2) symmetry of the Seiberg-Witten equations. We also explore a related construction, of an involutive version of Heegaard Floer homology.

Relative genus bounds in indefinite four-manifolds

Given a closed four-manifold $X$ with an indefinite intersection form, we consider smoothly embedded surfaces in $X \setminus $int$(B^4)$, with boundary a knot $K \subset S^3$. We give several methods to bound the genus of such surfaces in a fixed homology class. Our tools include adjunction inequalities and the $10/8 + 4$ theorem. In particular, we present obstructions to a knot being H-slice (that is, bounding a null-homologous disk) in a four-manifold and show that the set of H-slice knots can detect exotic smooth structures on closed $4$-manifolds.

From zero surgeries to candidates for exotic definite four-manifolds

One strategy for distinguishing smooth structures on closed $4$-manifolds is to produce a knot $K$ in $S^3$ that is slice in one smooth filling $W$ of $S^3$ but not slice in some homeomorphic smooth filling $W'$. In this paper we explore how $0$-surgery homeomorphisms can be used to potentially construct exotic pairs of this form. In order to systematically generate a plethora of candidates for exotic pairs, we give a fully general construction of pairs of knots with the same zero surgeries. By computer experimentation, we find $5$ topologically slice knots such that, if any of them were slice, we would obtain an exotic four-sphere. We also investigate the possibility of constructing exotic smooth structures on $\#^n \mathbb{C}P^2$ in a similar fashion.

Skein lasagna modules and handle decompositions

The skein lasagna module is an extension of Khovanov-Rozansky homology to the setting of a four-manifold and a link in its boundary. This invariant plays the role of the Hilbert space of an associated fully extended (4+epsilon)-dimensional TQFT. We give a general procedure for expressing the skein lasagna module in terms of a handle decomposition for the four-manifold. We use this to calculate a few examples, and show that the skein lasagna module can sometimes be locally infinite dimensional.

Searching for ribbons with machine learning

We apply Bayesian optimization and reinforcement learning to a problem in topology: the question of when a knot bounds a ribbon disk. This question is relevant in an approach to disproving the four-dimensional smooth Poincar\'e conjecture; using our programs, we rule out many potential counterexamples to the conjecture. We also show that the programs are successful in detecting many ribbon knots in the range of up to 70 crossings.

A Rasmussen invariant for links in $\mathbb{RP}^3$

Asaeda-Przytycki-Sikora, Manturov, and Gabrov\v{s}ek extended Khovanov homology to links in $\mathbb{RP}^3$. We construct a Lee-type deformation of their theory, and use it to define an analogue of Rasmussen's s-invariant in this setting. We show that the s-invariant gives constraints on the genera of link cobordisms in the cylinder $I \times \mathbb{RP}^3$. As an application, we give examples of freely 2-periodic knots in $S^3$ that are concordant but not standardly equivariantly concordant.

Skein lasagna modules for 2-handlebodies

Morrison, Walker, and Wedrich used the blob complex to construct a generalization of Khovanov-Rozansky homology to links in the boundary of a 4-manifold. The degree zero part of their theory, called the skein lasagna module, admits an elementary definition in terms of certain diagrams in the 4-manifold. We give a description of the skein lasagna module for 4-manifolds without 1- and 3-handles, and present some explicit calculations for disk bundles over $S^2$.

A generalization of Rasmussen's invariant, with applications to surfaces in some four-manifolds

We extend the definition of Khovanov-Lee homology to links in connected sums of $S^1 \times S^2$'s, and construct a Rasmussen-type invariant for null-homologous links in these manifolds. For certain links in $S^1 \times S^2$, we compute the invariant by reinterpreting it in terms of Hochschild homology. As applications, we prove inequalities relating the Rasmussen-type invariant to the genus of surfaces with boundary in the following four-manifolds: $B^2 \times S^2$, $S^1 \times B^3$, $\mathbb{CP}^2$, and various connected sums and boundary sums of these. We deduce that Rasmussen's invariant also gives genus bounds for surfaces inside homotopy 4-balls obtained from $B^4$ by Gluck twists. Therefore, it cannot be used to prove that such homotopy 4-balls are non-standard.

A knot Floer stable homotopy type

Given a grid diagram for a knot or link K in $S^3$, we construct a filtered spectrum whose homology is the knot Floer homology of K. We conjecture that the filtered homotopy type of the spectrum is an invariant of K. Our construction does not use holomorphic geometry, but rather builds on the combinatorial definition of grid homology. We inductively define models for the moduli spaces of pseudo-holomorphic strips and disk bubbles, and patch them together into a framed flow category. The inductive step relies on the vanishing of an obstruction class that takes values in a complex of positive domains with partitions.

Grid diagrams and Heegaard Floer invariants

We give combinatorial descriptions of the Heegaard Floer homology groups for arbitrary three-manifolds (with coefficients in Z/2). The descriptions are based on presenting the three-manifold as an integer surgery on a link in the three-sphere, and then using a grid diagram for the link. We also give combinatorial descriptions of the mod 2 Ozsvath-Szabo mixed invariants of closed four-manifolds, in terms of grid diagrams.

A two-variable series for knot complements

The physical 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory T[Y] was previously used to predict the existence of some 3-manifold invariants $\hat{Z}_{a}(q)$ that take the form of power series with integer coefficients, converging in the unit disk. Their radial limits at the roots of unity should recover the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants. In this paper we discuss how, for complements of knots in $S^3$, the analogue of the invariants $\hat{Z}_{a}(q)$ should be a two-variable series $F_K(x,q)$ obtained by parametric resurgence from the asymptotic expansion of the colored Jones polynomial. The terms in this series should satisfy a recurrence given by the quantum A-polynomial. Furthermore, there is a formula that relates $F_K(x,q)$ to the invariants $\hat{Z}_{a}(q)$ for Dehn surgeries on the knot. We provide explicit calculations of $F_K(x,q)$ in the case of knots given by negative definite plumbings with an unframed vertex, such as torus knots. We also find numerically the first terms in the series for the figure-eight knot, up to any desired order, and use this to understand $\hat{Z}_a(q)$ for some hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

A gluing theorem for the relative Bauer-Furuta invariants

In a previous paper we have constructed an invariant of four-dimensional manifolds with boundary in the form of an element in the stable homotopy group of the Seiberg-Witten Floer spectrum of the boundary. Here we prove that when one glues two four-manifolds along their boundaries, the Bauer-Furuta invariant of the resulting manifold is obtained by applying a natural pairing to the invariants of the pieces. As an application, we show that the connected sum of three copies of the K3 surface contains no exotic nuclei. In the process we also compute the Floer spectrum for several Seifert fibrations.

Seiberg-Witten-Floer stable homotopy type of three-manifolds with b_1=0

Using Furuta's idea of finite dimensional approximation in Seiberg-Witten theory, we refine Seiberg-Witten Floer homology to obtain an invariant of homology 3-spheres which lives in the S^1-equivariant graded suspension category. In particular, this gives a construction of Seiberg-Witten Floer homology that avoids the delicate transversality problems in the standard approach. We also define a relative invariant of four-manifolds with boundary which generalizes the Bauer-Furuta stable homotopy invariant of closed four-manifolds.
