The Hessian map

In this paper we study the Hessian map $h_{d,r}$ which associates to any hypersurface of degree $d$ in ${\mathbb P}^r$ its Hessian hypersurface. We study general properties of this map and we prove that: $h_{d,1}$ is birational onto its image if $d\geq 5$; we study in detail the maps $h_{3,1}$, $h_{4,1}$ and $h_{3,2}$; we study the restriction of the Hessian map to the locus of hypersurfaces of degree $d$ with Waring rank $r+2$ in ${\mathbb P}^r$, proving that this restriction is injective as soon as $r\geq 2$ and $d\geq 3$, which implies that $h_{3,3}$ is birational onto its image; we prove that the differential of the Hessian map is of maximal rank on the generic hypersurfaces of degree $d$ with Waring rank $r+2$ in ${\mathbb P}^r$, as soon as $r\geq 2$ and $d\geq 3$.

Moduli of curves on Enriques surfaces

We compute the number of moduli of all irreducible components of the moduli space of smooth curves on Enriques surfaces. In most cases, the moduli maps to the moduli space of Prym curves are generically injective or dominant. Exceptional behaviour is related to existence of Enriques--Fano threefolds and to curves with nodal Prym-canonical model.

On the irreducibility of Severi varieties on K3 surfaces

Let $(S,L)$ be a polarized $K3$ surface of genus $p \geqslant 11$ such that $\mathrm{Pic}(S)=\mathbf{Z}[L]$, and $δ$ a non-negative integer. We prove that if $p\geqslant 4δ-3$, then the Severi variety of $δ$-nodal curves in $|L|$ is irreducible.

The classification of complex algebraic surfaces

This text grew up from the notes of a graduate course I gave at the University of Roma ``Tor Vergata'' in the academic year 2018--19. The subject is the classification of complex algebraic surfaces following Mori's theory. It includes the $P_{12}$--Theorem, Sarkisov's programme in the surface case and Noether--Castelnuovo's Theorem in its classical version.

On Fano schemes of complete intersections

We provide enumerative formulas for the degrees of varieties parameterizing hypersurfaces and complete intersections which contain pro-jective subspaces and conics. Besides, we find all cases where the Fano scheme of the general complete intersection is irregular of dimension at least 2, and for the Fano surfaces we deduce formulas for their holomorphic Euler characteristic.

Gonality of curves on general hypersurfaces

This paper concerns the existence of curves with low gonality on smooth hypersurfaces of sufficiently large degree. It has been recently proved that if $X\subset \mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ is a hypersurface of degree $d\geq n+2$, and if $C\subset X$ is an irreducible curve passing through a general point of $X$, then its gonality verifies $\mathrm{gon}(C)\geq d-n$, and equality is attained on some special hypersurfaces. We prove that if $X\subset \mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ is a very general hypersurface of degree $d\geq 2n+2$, the least gonality of an irreducible curve $C\subset X$ passing through a general point of $X$ is $\mathrm{gon}(C)=d-\left\lfloor\frac{\sqrt{16n+1}-1}{2}\right\rfloor$, apart from a series of possible exceptions, where $\mathrm{gon}(C)$ may drop by one.

On complete intersections containing a linear subspace

Consider the Fano scheme $F_k(Y)$ parameterizing $k$-dimensional linear subspaces contained in a complete intersection $Y \subset \mathbb{P}^m$ of multi-degree $\underline{d} = (d_1, \ldots, d_s)$. It is known that, if $t := \sum_{i=1}^s \binom{d_i +k}{k}-(k+1) (m-k)\leqslant 0$ and $Π_{i=1}^sd_i >2$, for $Y$ a general complete intersection as above, then $F_k(Y)$ has dimension $-t$. In this paper we consider the case $t> 0$. Then the locus $W_{\underline{d},k}$ of all complete intersections as above containing a $k$-dimensional linear subspace is irreducible and turns out to have codimension $t$ in the parameter space of all complete intersections with the given multi-degree. Moreover, we prove that for general $[Y]\in W_{\underline{d},k}$ the scheme $F_k(Y)$ is zero-dimensional of length one. This implies that $W_{\underline{d},k}$ is rational.

Francesco Severi: il suo pensiero matematico e politico prima e dopo la Grande Guerra

The aim of this article has been to put together various aspects of the personality of the Italian mathematician Francesco Severi: the mathematical, the political, the institutional, academic and philosophical one. We tried in particular to elucidate if the events related the First World War represented a turning point in the life and scientific production of Severi.

Moduli of nodal curves on K3 surfaces

We consider modular properties of nodal curves on general $K3$ surfaces. Let $\mathcal{K}_p$ be the moduli space of primitively polarized $K3$ surfaces $(S,L)$ of genus $p\geqslant 3$ and $\mathcal{V}_{p,m,δ}\to \mathcal{K}_p$ be the universal Severi variety of $δ$--nodal irreducible curves in $|mL|$ on $(S,L)\in \mathcal{K}_p$. We find conditions on $p, m,δ$ for the existence of an irreducible component $\mathcal{V}$ of $\mathcal{V}_{p,m,δ}$ on which the moduli map $ψ: \mathcal{V}\to \mathcal{M}_g$ (with $g= m^2 (p -1) + 1-δ$) has generically maximal rank differential. Our results, which for any $p$ leave only finitely many cases unsolved and are optimal for $m\geqslant 5$ (except for very low values of $p$), are summarized in Theorem 1.1 in the introduction.

Contractible curves on a rational surface

In this paper we prove that if S is a smooth, irreducible, projective, rational, complex surface and D an effective, connected, reduced divisor on S, then the pair (S,D) is contractible if the log-Kodaira dimension of the pair is $-\infty$. More generally, we even prove that this contraction is possible without blowing up an assigned cluster of points on S. Using the theory of peeling, we are also able to give some information in the case D is not connected.

Gaps for geometric genera

We investigate the possible values for geometric genera of subvarieties in a smooth projective variety. Values which are not attained are called gaps. For curves on a very general surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$, the initial gap interval was found by Xu (see [7] in References), and the next one in our previous paper (see [4] in References), where also the finiteness of the set of gaps was established and an asymptotic upper bound of this set was found. In the present paper we extend some of these results to smooth projective varieties of arbitrary dimension using a different approach.

A few questions about curves on surfaces

In this note we address the following kind of question: let X be a smooth, irreducible, projective surface and D a divisor on X$satisfying some sort of positivity hypothesis, then is there some multiple of D depending only on X which is effective or movable? We describe some examples, discuss some conjectures and prove some results that suggest that the answer should in general be negative, unless one puts some really strong hypotheses either on D or on X.

Guido Castelnuovo's Last Higher Geometry Lectures (1922-23)

Here we present the transcription of the handwritten notes, carefully taken by an anonymous student, of the last lecture course taught by Guido Castelnuovo in 1922-23. The title of the course is "Curve algebriche piane e sghembe" ("Plane and space algebraic curves"): indeed, the language of both the original text and our brief introduction is Italian. The manuscript belongs to the legacy of Alfredo Franchetta (1916-2011) and the typesetting is due to Natascia Zangani. This edition is our modest contribution to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Guido Castelnuovo (1865-1952).

Cremona linearizations of some classical varieties

In this paper we present an effective method for linearizing rational varieties of codimension at least two under Cremona transformations, starting from a given parametrization. Using these linearizing Cremonas, we simplify the equations of secant and tangential varieties of some classical examples, including Veronese, Segre and Grassmann varieties. We end the paper by treating the special case of the Segre embedding of the n-fold product of projective spaces, where cumulant Cremonas, arising from algebraic statistics, appear as specific cases of our general construction.

Genera of curves on a very general surface in $P^3$

In this paper we consider the question of determining the geometric genera of irreducible curves lying on a very general surface $S$ of degree $d$ at least 5 in $\mathbb{P}^3$ (the cases $d \leqslant 4$ are well known). We introduce the set $Gaps(d)$ of all non-negative integers which are not realized as geometric genera of irreducible curves on $S$. We prove that $Gaps(d)$ is finite and, in particular, that $Gaps(5)= \{0,1,2\}$. The set $Gaps(d)$ is the union of finitely many disjoint and separated integer intervals. The first of them, according to a theorem of Xu, is $Gaps_0(d):=[0, \frac{d(d-3)}{2} - 3]$. We show that the next one is $Gaps_1(d):= [\frac{d^2-3d+4}{2}, d^2-2d-9]$ for all $d \geqslant 6$.

On finiteness of curves with high canonical degree on a surface

The \emph{canonical degree} of a curve $C$ on a surface $X$ is $K_X\cdot C$. Our main result, is that on a surface of general type there are only finitely many curves with negative self--intersection and sufficiently large canonical degree. Our proof strongly relies on results by Miyaoka. We extend our result both to surfaces not of general type and to non--negative curves, and give applications, e.g. to finiteness of negative curves on a general blow--up of $\mathbb P^ 2$ at $n\geq 10$ general points (a result related to \emph{Nagata's Conjecture}). We finally discuss a conjecture by Vojta concerning the asymptotic behaviour of the ratio between the canonical degree and the geometric genus of a curve varying on a surface. The results in this paper go in the direction of understanding the \emph{bounded negativity} problem.
