Holographic & Channel-Aware Distributed Detection of a Non-cooperative Target

This work investigates Distributed Detection (DD) in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), where spatially distributed sensors transmit binary decisions over a shared flat-fading channel. To enhance fusion efficiency, a reconfigurable metasurface is positioned in the near-field of a few receive antennas, enabling a holographic architecture that harnesses large-aperture gains with minimal RF hardware. A generalized likelihood ratio test is derived for fixed metasurface settings, and two low-complexity joint design strategies are proposed to optimize both fusion and metasurface configuration. These suboptimal schemes achieve a balance between performance, complexity, and system knowledge. The goal is to ensure reliable detection of a localized phenomenon at the fusion center, under energy-efficient constraints aligned with IoT requirements. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed holographic fusion, even under simplified designs.

Beampattern Design for Transmit Architectures Based on Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

In this work, we tackle the problem of beampattern design for a transmit system employing a large reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to redirect radio frequency signals emitted by a few active antennas (sources). We begin by establishing a convenient signal model and discussing the impact of signal bandwidth, source-RIS channel, and system geometry on our derivations. Subsequently, we propose a joint optimization of the waveform emitted by each source and the phase shifts introduced by the RIS. The objective is to match a desired space-frequency distribution of the far-field radiation pattern, relevant to both radar and communication applications. We present a sub-optimal solution to this problem, subject to a constraint on the total power radiated by the sources and, optionally, on the constant modulus of the waveforms. The provided example demonstrates the effective beampattern shaping capabilities of this RIS-based transmit architecture. Specifically, for the same array size and the same desired radiation pattern, the resulting approximation error is comparable to that obtained with a fully-digital MIMO array, especially when constant-modulus waveforms are enforced, and significantly smaller than that of a phased array.

Track-before-detect in RIS-aided Integrated Sensing and Communication

This study considers a base station equipped with sensing and communication capabilities, which serves a ground user and scans a portion of the sky via a passive reconfigurable intelligent surface. To achieve more favorable system tradeoffs, we utilize a multi-frame radar detector, comprising a detector, a plot-extractor, and a track-before-detect processor. The main idea proposed here is that user spectral efficiency can be enhanced by increasing the number of scans jointly processed by the multi-frame radar detector while maintaining the same sensing performance. A numerical analysis is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed solution and to evaluate the achievable system tradeoffs.

Integrated Communication and RIS-aided Track-Before-Detect Radar Sensing

This paper investigates an integrated sensing and communication system where the base station serves multiple downlink users, while employing a passive reconfigurable intelligent surface to detect small, noncooperative airborne targets. We propose a method to design the two-way beampattern of the RIS-assisted monostatic radar, which allows controlling the sidelobe levels in the presence of eavesdroppers, jammers, and other scattering objects and avoiding any radar interference to the users. To obtain more favorable system tradeoffs, we exploit the correlation of the target echoes over consecutive scans by resorting to a multi-frame radar detector, which includes a detector, a plot-extractor, and a track-before-detect processor. A numerical analysis is provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed solutions and to assess the achievable tradeoffs. Our results show that, by increasing the number of scans processed by the radar detector (and therefore its implementation complexity), we can reduce the amount of power dedicated to the radar function while maintaining the same sensing performance (measured in terms of probability of target detection and root mean square error in the estimation of target position); this excess power can be reused to increase the user sum-rate.

On the Coexistence of eMBB and URLLC in Multi-cell Massive MIMO

The non-orthogonal coexistence between the enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and the ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) in the downlink of a multi-cell massive MIMO system is rigorously analyzed in this work. We provide a unified information-theoretic framework blending an infinite-blocklength analysis of the eMBB spectral efficiency (SE) in the ergodic regime with a finite-blocklength analysis of the URLLC error probability relying on the use of mismatched decoding, and of the so-called saddlepoint approximation. Puncturing (PUNC) and superposition coding (SPC) are considered as alternative downlink coexistence strategies to deal with the inter-service interference, under the assumption of only statistical channel state information (CSI) knowledge at the users. eMBB and URLLC performances are then evaluated over different precoding techniques and power control schemes, by accounting for imperfect CSI knowledge at the base stations, pilot-based estimation overhead, pilot contamination, spatially correlated channels, the structure of the radio frame, and the characteristics of the URLLC activation pattern. Simulation results reveal that SPC is, in many operating regimes, superior to PUNC in providing higher SE for the eMBB yet achieving the target reliability for the URLLC with high probability. Moreover, PUNC might cause eMBB service outage in presence of high URLLC traffic loads. However, PUNC turns to be necessary to preserve the URLLC performance in scenarios where the multi-user interference cannot be satisfactorily alleviated.

Energy-Efficient Power Control in Cell-Free and User-Centric Massive MIMO at Millimeter Wave

In a cell-free massive MIMO architecture a very large number of distributed access points simultaneously and jointly serves a much smaller number of mobile stations; a variant of the cell-free technique is the user-centric approach, wherein each access point just serves a reduced set of mobile stations. This paper introduces and analyzes the cell-free and user-centric architectures at millimeter wave frequencies, considering a training-based channel estimation phase, and the downlink and uplink data transmission phases. First of all, a multiuser clustered millimeter wave channel model is introduced in order to account for the correlation among the channels of nearby users; second, an uplink multiuser channel estimation scheme is described along with low-complexity hybrid analog/digital beamforming architectures. Third, the non-convex problem of power allocation for downlink global energy efficiency maximization is addressed. Interestingly, in the proposed schemes no channel estimation is needed at the mobile stations, and the beamforming schemes used at the mobile stations are channel-independent and have a very simple structure. Numerical results show the benefits granted by the power control procedure, that the considered architectures are effective, and permit assessing the loss incurred by the use of the hybrid beamformers and by the channel estimation errors.

Co-existence Between a Radar System and a Massive MIMO Wireless Cellular System

In this paper we consider the uplink of a massive MIMO communication system using 5G New Radio-compliant multiple access, which is to co-exist with a radar system using the same frequency band. We propose a system model taking into account the reverberation (clutter) produced by the radar system at the massive MIMO receiver. Then, we propose several linear receivers for uplink data-detection, ranging by the simple channel-matched beamformer to the zero-forcing and linear minimum mean square error receivers for clutter disturbance rejection. Our results show that the clutter may have a strong effect on the performance of the cellular communication system, but the use of large-scale antenna arrays at the base station is key to provide increased robustness against it, at least as far as data-detection is concerned.
