v4 from ideal and viscous hydrodynamic simulations of nuclear collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

We compute v4/(v2)^2 in ideal and viscous hydrodynamics. We investigate its sensitivity to details of the hydrodynamic model and compare the results to experimental data from RHIC. Whereas v2 has a significant sensitivity only to initial eccentricity and viscosity while being insensitive to freeze out temperature, we find that v4/(v2)^2 is quite insensitive to initial eccentricity. On the other hand, it can still be sensitive to shear viscosity in addition to freeze out temperature, although viscous effects do not universally increase v4/(v2)^2 as originally predicted. Consistent with data, we find no dependence on particle species. We also make a prediction for v4/(v2)^2 in heavy ion collisions at the LHC.

Are eccentricity fluctuations able to explain the centrality dependence of $v_4$?

The fourth harmonic of the azimuthal distribution of particles $v_4$ has been measured for Au-Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The centrality dependence of $v_4$ does not agree with the prediction from hydrodynamics. In particular, the ratio $v_4/(v_2)^2$, where $v_2$ denotes the second harmonic of the azimuthal distribution of particles, is significantly larger than predicted by hydrodynamics. We argue that this discrepancy is mostly due to elliptic flow ($v_2$) fluctuations. We evaluate these fluctuations on the basis of a Monte Carlo Glauber calculation. The effect of deviations from local thermal equilibrium is also studied, but appears to be only a small correction. Combining these two effects allows us to reproduce experimental data for peripheral and midcentral collisions. However, we are unable to explain the large magnitude of $v_4/(v_2)^2$ observed for the most central collisions.

Why is $v_4/(v_2)^2$ larger than predicted by hydrodynamics?

The second and fourth Fourier harmonics of the azimuthal distribution of particles, $v_2$ and $v_4$, have been mesured in Au-Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The ratio $v_4/(v_2)^2$ is significantly larger than predicted by hydrodynamics. Effects of partial thermalization are estimated on the basis of a transport calculation, and are shown to increase the ratio by a small amount. We argue that the large value of $v_4/(v_2)^2$ seen experimentally is mostly due to elliptic flow fluctuations. However, the standard model of eccentricity fluctuations is unable to explain the large magnitude of $v_4/(v_2)^2$ in central collisions.

Effects of partial thermalization on HBT interferometry

Hydrodynamical models have generally failed to describe interferometry radii measured at RHIC. In order to investigate this ``HBT puzzle'', we carry out a systematic study of HBT radii in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions within a two-dimensional transport model. We compute the transverse radii $R_o$ and $R_s$ as functions of $p_t$ for various values of the Knudsen number, which measures the degree of thermalization in the system. For realistic values of the Knudsen number estimated from $v_2$ data, we obtain $R_o/R_s \simeq 1.2$, much closer to data than standard hydrodynamical results. Femtoscopic observables vary little with the degree of thermalization. Azimuthal oscillations of the radii in non central collisions do not provide a good probe of thermalization.
