Groupoid exactness and the weak containment problem

Our purpose is to study in the setting of locally compact groupoids the analogues of the well-known equivalent definitions of exactness for discrete groups. Our best results are obtained for a class of étale groupoids that we call inner amenable. For locally compact groups this notion coincides with a classical notion of inner amenability. We give examples of such groupoids. Whether all étale groupoids have this property is still unknown. For inner amenable étale groupoids we extend what is known for discrete groups in proving the equivalence of six natural notions of exactness: (1) strong amenability at infinity; (2) amenability at infinity; (3) nuclearity of the uniform algebra of the groupoid; (4) exactness of this C^*-algebra; (5) exactness of the groupoid in the sense of Kirchberg-Wassermann; (6) exactness of the reduced C^*-algebra of the groupoid. We give several illustrations of these results. One of our motivations for this study of exactness is that it plays a crucial role in examining the relationships between the amenability of a groupoid and the fact that its full and reduced C^*-algebras coincide. This is highlighted in the review we give of the results obtained by several authors on this subject. We end our monograph with open questions and an appendix on fibrewise compactifications whose study is needed because our work requires to extend from discrete groups to any étale groupoid G the notion of Stone-Cech compactification on which G acts.

Amenability, exactness and weak containment property for groupoids

From the mid-1970s, Eberhard Kirchberg undertook a remarkable extensive study of $C^*$-algebras exactness whose applications spread out to many branches of analysis. In this review we focus on the case of groupoid $C^*$-algebras for which the notion of exactness needs to be better understood. In particular some versions of exactness play an important role in the study of the weak containment problem, that is whether the coincidence of the full and reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebras implies the amenability of the groupoid or not.

Some remarks about the weak containment property for groupoids and semigroups

A locally compact groupoid is said to have the weak containment property if its full $C^*$-algebra coincides with its reduced one. This property is strictly weaker than amenability and is known to be equivalent to amenability for transformation groupoids relative to actions of exact discrete groups. We believe that for general étale groupoids one should have the same equivalence of the two properties under some mild exactness assumption. In this paper we try to support this statement.

Amenable actions preserving a locally finite metric

The class A of countable groups that admit a faithful, transitive, amenable -- in the sense that there is an invariant mean -- action on a set has been widely investigated in the past. In this paper, we no longer require the action to be transitive, but we ask for it to preserve a locally finite metric (and still to be faithful and amenable). The groups having such actions are those that embed into a totally disconnected amenable locally compact group. Then we focus on the subclass A 1 of groups for which the actions are moreover transitive. This class is strictly contained into A and includes non-amenable groups. An important particular case of actions preserving a locally finite metric is given by actions by automorphisms of locally finite connected graphs. We take this opportunity, in our partly expository paper, to review some nice results about amenable actions in this setting.

Invariant proper metrics on coset spaces

It is known that for every second countable locally compact group G, there exists a proper G-invariant metric which induces the topology of the group. This is no longer true for coset spaces G/H viewed as G-spaces. We study necessary and sufficient conditions which ensure the existence of such metrics on G/H.

Old and new about treeability and the Haagerup property for measured groupoids

This is mainly an expository text on the Haagerup property for countable groupoids equipped with a quasi-invariant measure, aiming to complete an article of Jolissaint devoted to the study of this property for probability measure preserving countable equivalence relations. We show that our definition is equivalent to the one given by Ueda in terms of the associated inclusion of von Neumann algebras. It makes obvious the fact that treeability implies the Haagerup property for such groupoids. For the sake of completeness, we also describe, or recall, the connections with amenability and Kazhdan property (T).

Pointwise limits for sequences of orbital integrals

In 1967, Ross and Strömberg published a theorem about pointwise limits of orbital integrals for the left action of a locally compact group $G$ onto $(G,ρ)$, where $ρ$ is the right Haar measure. In this paper, we study the same kind of problem, but more generally for left actions of $G$ onto any measured space $(X,μ)$, which leaves the $σ$-finite measure $μ$ relatively invariant, in the sense that $sμ= Δ(s)μ$ for every $s\in G$, where $Δ$ is the modular function of $G$. As a consequence, we also obtain a generalization of a theorem of Civin, relative to one-parameter groups of measure preserving transformations. The original motivation for the circle of questions treated here dates back to classical problems concerning pointwise convergence of Riemann sums relative to Lebesgue integrable functions.

On the comparison of norms of convolutors associated to noncommutative dynamics

To any action of a locally compact group $G$ on a pair $(A,B)$ of von Neumann algebras is canonically associated a pair $(π\_A^α, π\_B^α)$ of unitary representations of $G$. The purpose of this paper is to provide results allowing to compare the norms of the operators $π\_A^α(μ)$ and $π\_B^α(μ)$ for bounded measures $μ$ on $G$. We have a twofold aim. First to point out that several known facts in ergodic and representation theory are indeed particular cases of general results about $(π\_A^α, π\_B^α)$. Second, under amenability assumptions, to obtain transference of inequalities that will be useful in noncommutative ergodic theory.

On ergodic theorems for free group actions on noncommutative spaces

We extend in a noncommutative setting the individual ergodic theorem of Nevo and Stein concerning measure preserving actions of free groups and averages on spheres $s_{2n}$ of even radius. Here we study state preserving actions of free groups on a von Neumann algebra $A$ and the behaviour of $(s_{2n}(x))$ for $x$ in noncommutative spaces $L^p(A)$. For the Cesàro means $\frac{1}{n}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} s_k$ and $p = +\infty$, this problem was solved by Walker. Our approach is based on ideas of Bufetov. We prove a noncommutative version of Rota ``Alternierende Verfahren'' theorem. To this end, we introduce specific dilations of the powers of some noncommutative Markov operators.

Cohomology of property T groupoids and applications

We extend the Delorme-Guichardet characterization of Kazhdan property $T$ groups to $r$-discrete measured groupoids. We give several applications, in particular to stability results of Kazhdan property $T$ and to the study of cocycles taking values in a group having the Haagerup property.
