A functional inequalities approach for the field-road diffusion model with (symmetric) nonlinear exchanges

In this note, we consider the so-called field-road diffusion model in a bounded domain, consisting of two parabolic PDEs posed on sets of different dimensions and coupled through (symmetric) nonlinear exchange terms. We propose a new and rather direct functional inequalities approach to prove the exponential decay of a relative entropy, and thus the convergence of the solution towards the stationary state selected by the total mass of the initial datum.

Existence of solutions and uniform bounds for the stationary semiconductor equations with generation and ionic carriers

We consider a stationary drift-diffusion system with ionic charge carriers and external generation of electron and hole charge carriers. This system arises, among other applications, in the context of semiconductor modeling for perovskite solar cells. Thanks to truncation techniques and iterative energy estimates, we show the existence and uniform upper and lower bounds on the solutions. The dependency of the bounds on the various parameters of the model is investigated numerically on physically relevant test cases.

Numerical analysis and simulation of lateral memristive devices: Schottky, ohmic, and multi-dimensional electrode models

In this paper, we present the numerical analysis and simulations of a multi-dimensional memristive device model. Memristive devices and memtransistors based on two-dimensional (2D) materials have demonstrated promising potential for neuromorphic computing and next-generation memory technologies. Our charge transport model describes the drift-diffusion of electrons, holes, and ionic defects self-consistently in an electric field. We incorporate two types of boundary models: ohmic and Schottky contacts. The coupled drift-diffusion partial differential equations are discretized using a physics-preserving Voronoi finite volume method. It relies on an implicit time-stepping scheme and the excess chemical potential flux approximation. We demonstrate that the fully discrete nonlinear scheme is unconditionally stable, preserving the free-energy structure of the continuous system and ensuring the non-negativity of carrier densities. Novel discrete entropy-dissipation inequalities for both boundary condition types in multiple dimensions allow us to prove the existence of discrete solutions. We perform multi-dimensional simulations to understand the impact of electrode configurations and device geometries, focusing on the hysteresis behavior in lateral 2D memristive devices. Three electrode configurations -- side, top, and mixed contacts -- are compared numerically for different geometries and boundary conditions. These simulations reveal the conditions under which a simplified one-dimensional electrode geometry can well represent the three electrode configurations. This work lays the foundations for developing accurate, efficient simulation tools for 2D memristive devices and memtransistors, offering tools and guidelines for their design and optimization in future applications.

Finite Volumes for a dissipative free boundary problem

We study a toy model for the evolution of the oxygen concentration in an oxide layer. It consists in a transient convection diffusion equation in a one-dimensional domain of variable width. The motions of the boundaries are governed by the traces of the concentration. We exhibit a necessary and sufficient condition on the parameters involved in the model for the existence of a unique traveling-wave solution. Moreover, we show that the model admits some universal entropy structure, in the sense that any convex function of the concentration yields a dissipated free energy (up to exchanges with the outer environment at the boundaries). We propose then an implicit in time arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian finite volume scheme based on Scharfetter-Gummel fluxes. It is shown to be unconditionally convergent, to preserve exactly the travelling wave, and to dissipate all the aforementioned free energies. Numerical experiments show that our scheme is first order accurate in time and second order in space, and that the transient solution converges in the long-time limit towards the traveling-wave solution.

Cross-diffusion systems coupled via a moving interface

We propose and study a one-dimensional model which consists of two cross-diffusion systems coupled via a moving interface. The motivation stems from the modelling of complex diffusion processes in the context of the vapor deposition of thin films. In our model, cross-diffusion of the various chemical species can be respectively modelled by a size-exclusion system for the solid phase and the Stefan-Maxwell system for the gaseous phase. The coupling between the two phases is modelled by linear phase transition laws of Butler-Volmer type, resulting in an interface evolution. The continuous properties of the model are investigated, in particular its entropy variational structure and stationary states. We introduce a two-point flux approximation finite volume scheme. The moving interface is addressed with a moving-mesh approach, where the mesh is locally deformed around the interface. The resulting discrete nonlinear system is shown to admit a solution that preserves the main properties of the continuous system, namely: mass conservation, nonnegativity, volume-filling constraints, decay of the free energy and asymptotics. In particular, the moving-mesh approach is compatible with the entropy structure of the continuous model. Numerical results illustrate these properties and the dynamics of the model.

Long time behavior of the field-road diffusion model: an entropy method and a finite volume scheme

We consider the so-called field-road diffusion model in a bounded domain, consisting of two parabolic PDEs posed on sets of different dimensions (a {\it field} and a {\it road} in a population dynamics context) and coupled through exchange terms on the road, which makes its analysis quite involved. We propose a TPFA finite volume scheme. In both the continuous and the discrete settings, we prove theexponential decay of an entropy, and thus the long time convergence to the stationary state selected by the total mass of the initial data. To deal with the problem of different dimensions, we artificially \lq\lq thicken'' the road and, then, establish a rather unconventional Poincar{é}-Wirtinger inequality. Numerical simulations confirm and complete the analysis, and raise new issues.

Structure Preserving Finite Volume Approximation of Cross-Diffusion Systems Coupled by a Free Interface

We propose a two-point flux approximation finite-volume scheme for the approximation of two cross-diffusion systems coupled by a free interface to account for vapor deposition. The moving interface is addressed with a cut-cell approach, where the mesh is locally deformed around the interface. The scheme preserves the structure of the continuous system, namely: mass conservation, nonnegativity, volume-filling constraints and decay of the free energy. Numerical results illustrate the properties of the scheme.

Numerical analysis of a finite volume scheme for charge transport in perovskite solar cells

In this paper, we consider a drift-diffusion charge transport model for perovskite solar cells, where electrons and holes may diffuse linearly (Boltzmann approximation) or nonlinearly (e.g. due to Fermi-Dirac statistics). To incorporate volume exclusion effects, we rely on the Fermi-Dirac integral of order -1 when modeling moving anionic vacancies within the perovskite layer which is sandwiched between electron and hole transport layers. After non-dimensionalization, we first prove a continuous entropy-dissipation inequality for the model. Then, we formulate a corresponding two-point flux finite volume scheme on Voronoi meshes and show an analogous discrete entropy-dissipation inequality. This inequality helps us to show the existence of a discrete solution of the nonlinear discrete system with the help of a corollary of Brouwer's fixed point theorem and the minimization of a convex functional. Finally, we verify our theoretically proven properties numerically, simulate a realistic device setup and show exponential decay in time with respect to the L^2 error as well as a physically and analytically meaningful relative entropy.

Long-time behaviour of hybrid finite volume schemes for advection-diffusion equations: linear and nonlinear approaches

We are interested in the long-time behaviour of approximate solutions to heterogeneous and anisotropic linear advection-diffusion equations in the framework of hybrid finite volume (HFV) methods on general polygonal/polyhedral meshes. We consider two linear methods, as well as a new, nonlinear scheme, for which we prove the existence and the positivity of discrete solutions. We show that the discrete solutions to the three schemes converge exponentially fast in time towards the associated discrete steady-states. To illustrate our theoretical findings, we present some numerical simulations assessing long-time behaviour and positivity. We also compare the accuracy of the schemes on some numerical tests in the stationary case.

Mathematical analysis of a thermodynamically consistent reduced model for iron corrosion

We are interested in a reduced model for corrosion of iron, in which ferric cations and electrons evolve in a fixed oxide layer subject to a self-consistent electrostatic potential. Reactions at the boundaries are modeled thanks to Butler-Volmer formulas, whereas the boundary conditions on the electrostatic potential model capacitors located at the interfaces between the materials. Our model takes inspiration in existing papers, to which we bring slight modifications in order to make it consistent with thermodynamics and its second principle. Building on a free energy estimate, we establish the global in time existence of a solution to the problem without any restriction on the physical parameters, in opposition to previous works. The proof further relies on uniform estimates on the chemical potentials that are obtained thanks to Moser iterations. Numerical illustrations are finally provided to highlight the similarities and the differences between our new model and the one previously studied in the literature.

Large time behavior of nonlinear finite volume schemes for convection-diffusion equations

In this contribution we analyze the large time behavior of a family of nonlinear finite volume schemes for anisotropic convection-diffusion equations set in a bounded bidimensional domain and endowed with either Dirichlet and / or no-flux boundary conditions. We show that solutions to the two-point flux approximation (TPFA) and discrete duality finite volume (DDFV) schemes under consideration converge exponentially fast toward their steady state. The analysis relies on discrete entropy estimates and discrete functional inequalities. As a biproduct of our analysis, we establish new discrete Poincaré-Wirtinger, Beckner and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. Our theoretical results are illustrated by numerical simulations.

A numerical analysis focused comparison of several Finite Volume schemes for an Unipolar Degenerated Drift-Diffusion Model

In this paper, we consider an unipolar degenerated drift-diffusion system where the relation between the concentration of the charged species $c$ and the chemical potential $h$ is $h(c)=\log \frac{c}{1-c}$. We design four different finite volume schemes based on four different formulations of the fluxes. We provide a stability analysis and existence results for the four schemes. The convergence proof with respect to the discretization parameters is established for two of them. Numerical experiments illustrate the behaviour of the different schemes.

Large-time behavior of a family of finite volume schemes for boundary-driven convection-diffusion equations

We are interested in the large-time behavior of solutions to finite volume discretizations of convection-diffusion equations or systems endowed with non-homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann type boundary conditions. Our results concern various linear and nonlinear models such as Fokker-Planck equations, porous media equations or drift-diffusion systems for semiconductors. For all of these models, some relative entropy principle is satisfied and implies exponential decay to the stationary state. In this paper we show that in the framework of finite volume schemes on orthogonal meshes, a large class of two-point monotone fluxes preserve this exponential decay of the discrete solution to the discrete steady state of the scheme. This includes for instance upwind and centered convections or Scharfetter-Gummel discretizations. We illustrate our theoretical results on several numerical test cases.

Exponential decay of a finite volume scheme to the thermal equilibrium for drift--diffusion systems

In this paper, we study the large--time behavior of a numerical scheme discretizing drift-- diffusion systems for semiconductors. The numerical method is finite volume in space, implicit in time, and the numerical fluxes are a generalization of the classical Scharfetter-- Gummel scheme which allows to consider both linear or nonlinear pressure laws. We study the convergence of approximate solutions towards an approximation of the thermal equilibrium state as time tends to infinity, and obtain a decay rate by controlling the discrete relative entropy with the entropy production. This result is proved under assumptions of existence and uniform-in-time $L $\infty$$ estimates for numerical solutions, which are then discussed. We conclude by presenting some numerical illustrations of the stated results.

Study of a fully implicit scheme for the drift-diffusion system. Asymptotic behavior in the quasi-neutral limit

In this paper, we are interested in the numerical approximation of the classical time-dependent drift-diffusion system near quasi-neutrality. We consider a fully implicit in time and finite volume in space scheme, where the convection-diffusion fluxes are approximated by Scharfetter-Gummel fluxes. We establish that all the a priori estimates needed to prove the convergence of the scheme does not depend on the Debye length $λ$. This proves that the scheme is asymptotic preserving in the quasi-neutral limit $λ\to 0$.

Large time behavior of a two phase extension of the porous medium equation

We study the large time behavior of the solutions to a two phase extension of the porous medium equation, which models the so-called seawater intrusion problem. The goal is to identify the self-similar solutions that correspond to steady states of a rescaled version of the problem. We fully characterize the unique steady states that are identified as minimizers of a convex energy and shown to be radially symmetric. Moreover, we prove the convergence of the solution to the time-dependent model towards the unique stationary state as time goes to infinity. We finally provide numerical illustrations of the stationary states and we exhibit numerical convergence rates.

Convergence of a Finite-Volume Scheme for a Degenerate Cross-Diffusion Model for Ion Transport

An implicit Euler finite-volume scheme for a degenerate cross-diffusion system describing the ion transport through biological membranes is analyzed. The strongly coupled equations for the ion concentrations include drift terms involving the electric potential, which is coupled to the concentrations through the Poisson equation. The cross-diffusion system possesses a formal gradient-flow structure revealing nonstandard degen-eracies, which lead to considerable mathematical difficulties. The finite-volume scheme is based on two-point flux approximations with "double" upwind mobilities. It preserves the structure of the continuous model like nonnegativity, upper bounds, and entropy dis-sipation. The degeneracy is overcome by proving a new discrete Aubin-Lions lemma of "degenerate" type. Under suitable assumptions, the existence and uniqueness of bounded discrete solutions, a discrete entropy inequality, and the convergence of the scheme is proved. Numerical simulations of a calcium-selective ion channel in two space dimensions indicate that the numerical scheme is of first order.
