Hodge loci and absolute Hodge classes

We combine Deligne's global invariant cycle theorem, and the algebraicity theorem of Cattani, Deligne and Kaplan, for the connected components of the locus of Hodge classes, to conclude that under simple assumptions these components are defined over number fields (assuming the initial family is), as expected from the Hodge conjecture. We also show that the Hodge conjecture for (weakly) absolute Hodge classes reduces to the Hodge conjecture for (weakly) absolute Hodge classes on varieties defined over number fields.

A generalization of the Kuga-Satake construction

The Kuga-Satake construction associates to a K3 type polarized weight 2 Hodge structure H an abelian variety A such that H is a quotient Hodge structure of H^2(A). The first step is to consider the Clifford algebra of H. It turns out that it is endowed with a weight 2 Hodge structure compatible with the algebra structure. We show more generally that a weight 2 polarized Hodge structure which carries a compatible (unitary, associative) algebra structure is a quotient of the H^2 of an abelian variety.

On integral Hodge classes on uniruled or Calabi-Yau threefolds

If X is a smooth projective complex threefold, the Hodge conjecture holds for degree 4 rational Hodge classes on X. Kollar gave examples where it does not hold for integral Hodge classes of degree 4, that is integral Hodge classes need not be classes of algebraic 1-cycles with integral coefficients. We show however that the Hodge conjecture holds for integral Hodge classes of degree 4 on a uniruled or a Calabi-Yau threefold.

Green's canonical syzygy conjecture for generic curves of odd genus

We prove the Green conjecture for generic curves of odd genus. That is we prove the vanishing $K_{k,1}(X,K_X)=0$ for $X$ generic of genus $2k+1$. The curves we consider are smooth curves $X$ on a K3 surface whose Picard group has rank 2. This completes our previous work, where the Green conjecture for generic curves of genus $g$ with fixed gonality $d$ was proved in the range $d\geq g/3$, with the possible exception of the generic curves of odd genus.

On the homotopy types of Kaehler manifolds and the birational Kodaira problem

We recently constructed examples of compact Kaeler manifolds which do not have the homotopy type of a projective complex manifold. They were however obtained by blowing-up certain complex tori, which are themselves deformation equivalent to complex projective manifolds. Thus it remained possible that in higher dimension, a birational version of Kodaira's theorem still holds. We construct however in this paper compact Kaehler manifolds, no birational model of which has the homotopy type of a projective manifold.

On the homotopy types of compact kaehler and complex projective manifolds

We show that in every dimension greater than or equal to 4, there exist compact Kaehler manifolds which do not have the homotopy type of projective complex manifolds. Thus they a fortiori are not deformation equivalent to a projective manifold, which solves negatively Kodaira's problem. We give both non simply connected (of dimension at least 4) and simply connected (of dimension at least 6) such examples.

K-correspondences and intrinsic pseudovolume forms

We introduce the notion of K-correspondence, and show that many Calabi-Yau varieties carry a lot of self-K-isocorrespondences, which furthermore satisfy the property of multiplying the canonical volume form by a constant of modulus different from 1. This leads to the introduction of a modified Kobayashi-Eisenman pseudovolume form, for which we are able to prove many instances of the Kobayashi conjecture.

Green's generic syzygy conjecture for curves of even genus lying on a K3 surface

We consider the generic Green conjecture on syzygies of a canonical curve, and particularly the following reformulation thereof: {\it For a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g$ in characteristic 0, the condition ${\rm Cliff} C>l$ is equivalent to the fact that $K_{g-l'-2,1}(C,K_C)=0, \forall l'\leq l$.} We propose a new approach, which allows up to prove this result for generic curves $C$ of genus $g(C)$ and gonality ${\rm gon(C)}$ in the range $$\frac{g(C)}{3}+1\leq {\rm gon(C)}\leq\frac{g(C)}{2}+1.$$

A counterexample to the Hodge conjecture for Kaehler varieties

Summary: The Hodge conjecture asks whether rational Hodge classes on a smooth projective manifolds are generated by the classes of algebraic subsets, or equivalently by Chern classes of coherent sheaves. On a compact Kaehler manifold, Hodge conjecture is known to be false if algebraic subsets are replaced with analytic subsets. Here we show that it is even false that for a Kaehler manifold, Hodge classes are generated by Chern classes of coherent sheaves. We also show that finite free resolution do not in general exist for coherent sheaves on compact Kaehler manifolds.

The Chow ring of a K3 surface

Let X be a K3 surface. We show that the Chow group CH_0(X) of 0-cycles contains a "fundamental class" c_X of degree 1 with remarkable properties: any product of divisors is proportional to this class, and so is the second Chern class c_2(X). This preprint supersedes the preprint math.AG/0109063 by the first author, where the latter property was conjectured.

Some results on Green's higher Abel-Jacobi map

We study the higher Abel-Jacobi invariant defined recently by M. Green. We first construct a counterexample to the injectivity of Green's higher Abel-Jacobi map. On the other hand, we prove that the higher Abel-Jacobi map governs Mumford's pull-back of holomorphic forms. We deduce from this that if a surface has holomorphic 2-forms, the image of the higher Abel-Jacobi map, defined on its group of zero-cycles Albanese equivalent to 0, has infinite dimensional image.
