Observation of Unprecedented Fractional Magnetization Plateaus in a New Shastry-Sutherland Ising Compound

Geometrically frustrated magnetic systems, such as those based on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL), offer a rich playground for exploring unconventional magnetic states. The delicate balance between competing interactions in these systems leads to the emergence of novel phases. We present the characterization of Er2Be2GeO7, an SSL compound with Er3+ ions forming orthogonal dimers separated by non-magnetic layers whose structure is invariant under the P-421m space group. Neutron scattering reveals an antiferromagnetic dimer structure at zero field, typical of Ising spins on that lattice and consistent with the anisotropic magnetization observed. However, magnetization measurements exhibit fractional plateaus at 1/4 and 1/2 of saturation, in contrast to the expected 1/3 plateau of the SSL Ising model. By comparing the energy of candidate states with ground-state lower bounds we show that this behavior requires spatially anisotropic interactions, leading to an anisotropic Shastry-Sutherland Ising Model (ASSLIM) symmetric under the Cmm2 space group. This anisotropy is consistent with the small orthorhombic distortion observed with single-crystal neutron diffraction. The other properties, including thermodynamics, which have been investigated theoretically using tensor networks, point to small residual interactions, potentially due to further couplings and quantum fluctuations. This study highlights Er2Be2GeO7 as a promising platform for investigating exotic magnetic phenomena.

Tailoring Physical Properties of Crystals through Synthetic Temperature Control: A Case Study for new Polymorphic NbFeTe2 phases

Growth parameters play a significant role in the crystal quality and physical properties of layered materials. Here we present a case study on a van der Waals magnetic NbFeTe2 material. Two different types of polymorphic NbFeTe2 phases, synthesized at different temperatures, display significantly different behaviors in crystal symmetry, electronic structure, electrical transport, and magnetism. While the phase synthesized at low temperature showing behavior consistent with previous reports, the new phase synthesized at high temperature, has completely different physical properties, such as metallic resistivity, long-range ferromagnetic order, anomalous Hall effect, negative magnetoresistance, and distinct electronic structures. Neutron diffraction reveals out-of-plane ferromagnetism below 70K, consistent with the electrical transport and magnetic susceptibility studies. Our work suggests that simply tuning synthetic parameters in a controlled manner could be an effective route to alter the physical properties of existing materials potentially unlocking new states of matter, or even discovering new materials.

Magnetic properties of the quasi-one-dimensional S = 1 spin chain antiferromagnet BaNiTe2O7

We report a quasi-one-dimensional S = 1 spin chain compound BaNiTe2O7. This magnetic system has been investigated by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron powder diffraction. These results indicate that BaNiTe2O7 develops a short-range magnetic correlation around T ~ 22 K. With further cooling, an antiferromagnetic phase transition is observed at TN ~ 5.4 K. Neutron powder diffraction revealed antiferromagnetic noncollinear order with a commensurate propagation vector k = (1/2, 1, 0). The refined magnetic moment size of Ni2+ at 1.5 K is 1.84μB, and its noncollinear spin texture is confirmed by first-principles calculations. Inelastic neutron-scattering results and density functional theory calculations confirmed the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the spin systems.

Spinon continuum in the Heisenberg quantum chain compound Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$

Magnetic excitations in the spin chain candidate Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$ have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. A spinon continuum with a bandwidth of $\sim22$ meV is observed along the chain formed by alternating magnetic V$^{4+}$ and nonmagnetic V$^{5+}$ ions. Incipient magnetic Bragg peaks due to weak ferromagnetic interchain couplings emerge when approaching the magnetic transition at $T_N\sim 5.3$ K while the excitations remain gapless within the instrumental resolution. Comparisons to the Bethe ansatz, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, and effective field theories confirm Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$ as a host of weakly coupled $S = 1/2$ chains dominated by antiferromagnetic intrachain interactions of $\sim7.1$(1) meV.

Interwoven atypical quantum states in CeLiBi$_2$

We report the discovery of CeLiBi$_2$, the first example of a material in the tetragonal Ce$TX_2$ ($T$ = transition metal; $X$ = pnictogen) family wherein an alkali cation replaces the typical transition metal. Magnetic susceptibility and neutron powder diffraction measurements are consistent with a crystal-field $Γ_6$ ground state Kramers doublet that orders antiferromagnetically below $T_N = 3.4$ K with an incommensurate propagation wave vector ${\bf{k}} = (0, 0.0724(4), 0.5)$ that generates a nanometric modulation of the magnetic structure. The best model of the ordered state is an elliptical cycloid with Ce moments primarily residing in the $ab$ plane. This is highly unusual, as all other $Γ_6$ Ce$TX_2$ members order ferromagnetically. Further, we observe an atypical hard-axis metamagnetic transition at $2$ T in magnetostriction, magnetization, and resistivity measurements. CeLiBi$_2$ is a rare example of a highly conductive material with dominant skew scattering leading to a large anomalous Hall effect. Quantum oscillations with five frequencies arise in magnetostriction and magnetic susceptibility data to $T = 30$ K and $μ_0H = 55$ T, which indicate small Fermi pockets of light carriers with effective masses as low as 0.07$m_e$. Density functional theory calculations indicate that square-net Dirac-like Bi$-p$ bands are responsible for these ultralight carriers. Together, our results show that CeLiBi$_2$ enables multiple atypical magnetic and electronic properties in a single clean material.

Gapless spin-excitations in the superconducting state of a quasi-one-dimensional spin-triplet superconductor

Majorana zero modes form as intrinsic defects in an odd-orbital one-dimensional superconductor thus motivating the search for such materials in the pursuit of Majorana physics. Here, we present combined experimental results and first principles calculations which suggest that quasi-one-dimensional K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ may be such a superconductor. Using inelastic neutron scattering we probe the dynamic spin-susceptibilities of K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ and K$_2$Mo$_3$As$_3$ and show the presence of antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations in both compounds. Below the superconducting transition, these fluctuations gap in K$_2$Mo$_3$As$_3$ but not in K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. Using first principles calculations, we show that these fluctuations likely arise from nesting on one dimensional features of the Fermi surface. Considering these results we propose that while K$_2$Mo$_3$As$_3$ is a conventional superconductor, K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ is likely a spin-triplet, and consequently, topological superconductor.

Effect of iron vacancies on the magnetic order and spin dynamics of the spin ladder BaFe$_{2-δ}$S$_{1.5}$Se$_{1.5}$

Quasi-one-dimensional iron chalcogenides possess various magnetic states depending on the lattice distortion, electronic correlations, and presence of defects. We present neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the spin ladder compound BaFe$_{2-δ}$S$_{1.5}$Se$_{1.5}$ with $\sim$6% iron vacancies. The data reveal that long-range magnetic order is absent, while the characteristic magnetic excitations that correspond to both the stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic correlations are observed. First-principles calculations support the existence of both stripe and block-type antiferromagnetic short-range order in the experimental sample. The disappearance of long-range magnetic order may be due to the competition between these two magnetic orders, which is greatly enhanced for a certain concentration of iron vacancies, which we calculate to be about 6%, consistent with the measured iron vacancy concentration. Our results highlight how iron vacancies in the iron-based spin ladder system strongly influence the magnetic ground state.

Spiral spin-liquid on a honeycomb lattice

Spiral spin-liquids are correlated paramagnetic states with degenerate propagation vectors forming a continuous ring or surface in reciprocal space. On the honeycomb lattice, spiral spin-liquids present a novel route to realize emergent fracton excitations, quantum spin liquids, and topological spin textures, yet experimental realizations remain elusive. Here, using neutron scattering, we show that a spiral spin-liquid is realized in the van der Waals honeycomb magnet FeCl$_3$. A continuous ring of scattering is directly observed, which indicates the emergence of an approximate U(1) symmetry in momentum space. Our work demonstrates that spiral spin-liquids can be achieved in two-dimensional systems and provides a promising platform to study the fracton physics in spiral spin-liquids.

Magnetic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice material BaNd$_2$ZnO$_5$

We investigate the physical properties of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice material BaNd$_2$ZnO$_5$. Neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements reveal antiferromagnetic order below 1.65 K. The magnetic order is found to be a 2-$\boldsymbol{Q}$ magnetic structure with the magnetic moments lying in the Shastry-Sutherland lattice planes comprising the tetragonal crystal structure of BaNd$_2$ZnO$_5$. The ordered moment for this structure is 1.9(1) $μ_B$ per Nd ion. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal that the crystal field ground state doublet is well separated from the first excited state at 8 meV. The crystal field Hamiltonian is determined through simultaneous refinement of models with both the LS coupling and intermediate coupling approximations to the inelastic neutron scattering and magnetic susceptibility data. The ground state doublet indicates that the magnetic moments lie primarily in the basal plane with magnitude consistent with the size of the determined ordered moment.

Hierarchical excitations from correlated spin tetrahedra on the breathing pyrochlore lattice

The hierarchy of the coupling strengths in a physical system often engenders an effective model at low energies where the decoupled high-energy modes are integrated out. Here, using neutron scattering, we show that the spin excitations in the breathing pyrochlore lattice compound CuInCr$_4$S$_8$ are hierarchical and can be approximated by an effective model of correlated tetrahedra at low energies. At higher energies, intra-tetrahedron excitations together with strong magnon-phonon couplings are observed, which suggests the possible role of the lattice degree of freedom in stabilizing the spin tetrahedra. Our work illustrates the spin dynamics in CuInCr$_4$S$_8$ and demonstrates a general effective-cluster approach to understand the dynamics on the breathing-type lattices.

Evidence for the topological order in a kagome antiferromagnet

A Z2 quantum spin liquid hosts one of the simplest topological orders and exhibits many exotic properties due to long-range quantum entanglements. Its elementary excitations are anyons such as spinons carrying fractionalized spin quantum number and visons carrying emergent Z2 gauge flux. However, experimental detection of these anyons remains elusive. The difficulties lie not only in the fact that there exists few candidates for Z2 quantum spin liquids but also in that visons are magnetically inert hence immune to available experimental techniques. Here we have studied the spin excitations and specific heats of kagome-lattice antiferromagnet Cu$_4$(OH)$_6$FBr and Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr, which consists of two-dimensional Cu$^{2+}$ kagome layers with either Cu$^{2+}$ or Zn$^{2+}$ ions in between. By combining the first principle calculations and inelastic neutron scattering data in the former, we show that the dominate couplings in Cu$_4$(OH)$_6$FBr are between the nearest neighbor spins within the kagome planes, and the kagome and interlayer spin systems are essentially decoupled above the antiferromagnetic transition temperature. The intrinsic spin excitations and specific heats of the kagome layers for Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr are thus derived by removing the contributions from the residual interlayer Cu$^{2+}$ magnetic impurities. Accordingly, the kagome spin system exhibits spin continuum with momentum-dependent spin gap and a large magnetic entropy at low temperature that is insensitive to magnetic field, which can be understood as the evidences of spinons and visons in this kagome quantum spin liquid candidate. Our results suggest the existence of the Z2 anyons in the material, and therefore provide a comprehensive set of evidences for the Z2 topological order in kagome quantum spin liquid and bring their choreographed entanglement dances to the stage of real materials.

Tuning from Frustrated Magnetism to Superconductivity in Quasi-One-Dimensional KCr$_3$As$_3$ Through Hydrogen Doping

We report the charge doping of KCr$_3$As$_3$ via H intercalation. We show that the previously reported ethanol bath deintercalation of K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ to KCr$_3$As$_3$ has a secondary effect whereby H from the bath enters the quasi-one-dimensional Cr$_6$As$_6$ chains. Furthermore, we find that - contrary to previous interpretations - the difference between non-superconducting as-grown KCr$_3$As$_3$ samples and superconducting hydrothermally annealed samples is not a change in crystallinity but due to charge doping, with the latter treatment increasing the H concentration in the CrAs tubes effectively electron-doping the 133 compound. These results suggest a new stoichiometry KH$_x$Cr$_3$As$_3$, that superconductivity arises from a suppressed magnetic order via a tunable parameter and pave the way for the first charge-doped phase diagram in these materials.

Incommensurate magnetism in K$_2$MnS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ and prospects for tunable frustration in a triangular lattice of pseudo-1D spin chains

We report the first detailed investigation of K$_2$MnS$_2$ and K$_2$MnSe$_2$ from the K$_2$MnS$_2$ structure type and their magnetic solid solution K$_2$MnS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ and find that compounds of this structure type consist of strongly-coupled pseudo-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains that collectively represent a frustrated two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnet. Bulk samples of K$_2$MnS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ with $0 \leq x \leq 2$ are characterized using X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, magnetization and heat capacity measurements. An incommensurate cycloid magnetic structure with a magnetic propagation vector $k = [0.58~0~1]$ is observed for all samples in K$_2$MnS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$, and the ordering is robust despite a 12\% increase in cell volume. Geometric frustration of chains results in incommensurability along $a$ and a two-step magnetic transition. The varying geometries accessible in compounds of this structure type are presented as promising avenues to tune frustration.

Antiferromagnetism in kagome $α$-Cu$_{3}$Mg(OH)$_6$Br$_2$

The antiferromagnetism in $α$-Cu$_3$Mg(OH)$_6$Br$_2$ was studied by magnetic-susceptibility, specific-heat and neutron-diffraction measurements. The crystal structure consists of Cu$^{2+}$ kagome layers with Mg$^{2+}$ ions occupying the centers of the hexagons, separated by Br$^{1-}$ ions. The magnetic system orders antiferromagnetically at 5.4 K with the magnetic moments aligned ferromagnetically within the kagome planes. The ordered moment is 0.94 $μ_B$, suggesting little quantum and geometrical fluctuations. By comparing the magnetic and specific-heat properties with those of the haydeeite, we suggest that $α$-Cu$_3$Mg(OH)$_6$Br$_2$ may be described by the two-dimensional spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg kagome model and is in the region of the ferromagnetic-order side of the phase diagram.

Effect of Zn doping on the antiferromagnetism in kagome Cu$_{4-x}$Zn$_x$(OH)$_6$FBr

Barlowite Cu$_4$(OH)$_6$FBr shows three-dimensional (3D) long-range antiferromagnetism, which is fully suppressed in Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr with a kagome quantum spin liquid ground state. Here we report systematic studies on the evolution of magnetism in the Cu$_{4-x}$Zn$_x$(OH)$_{6}$FBr system as a function of $x$ to bridge the two limits of Cu$_4$(OH)$_6$FBr ($x$=0) and Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$FBr ($x$=1). Neutron-diffraction measurements reveal a hexagonal-to-orthorhombic structural change with decreasing temperature in the $x$ = 0 sample. While confirming the 3D antiferromagnetic nature of low-temperature magnetism, the magnetic moments on some Cu$^{2+}$ sites on the kagome planes are found to be vanishingly small, suggesting strong frustration already exists in barlowite. Substitution of interlayer Cu$^{2+}$ with Zn$^{2+}$ with gradually increasing $x$ completely suppresses the bulk magnetic order at around $x$ = 0.4, but leaves a local secondary magnetic order up to $x\sim 0.8$ with a slight decrease in its transition temperature. The high-temperature magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements further suggest that the intrinsic magnetic properties of kagome spin liquid planes may already appear from $x>0.3$ samples. Our results reveal that the Cu$_{4-x}$Zn$_x$(OH)$_6$FBr may be the long-thought experimental playground for the systematic investigations of the quantum phase transition from a long-range antiferromagnet to a topologically ordered quantum spin liquid.

Coincident structural and magnetic order in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$)P$_x$)$_2$ revealed by high-resolution neutron diffraction

We present neutron diffraction analysis of BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ over a wide temperature (10 to 300 K) and compositional ($0.11 \leq x \leq 0.79$) range, including the normal state, the magnetically ordered state, and the superconducting state. The paramagnetic to spin-density wave and orthorhombic to tetragonal transitions are first order and coincident within the sensitivity of our measurements ($\sim 0.5$ K). Extrapolation of the orthorhombic order parameter down to zero suggests that structural quantum criticality cannot exist at compositions higher than $x = 0.28$, which is much lower than values determined using other methods, but in good agreement with our observations of the actual phase stability range. The onset of spin-density wave order shows a stronger structural anomaly than the charge-doped system in the form of an enhancement of the $c/a$ ratio below the transition.

Unusual Relationship between Magnetism and Superconductivity in FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$

We use neutron scattering, to study magnetic excitations in crystals near the ideal superconducting composition of FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$. Two types of excitations are found, a resonance at (0.5, 0.5, 0) and incommensurate fluctuations on either side of this position. We show that the two sets of magnetic excitations behave differently with doping, with the resonance being fixed in position while the incommensurate excitations move as the doping is changed. These unusual results show that a common behavior of the low energy magnetic excitations is not necessary for pairing in these materials.
