Field-angular Dependence of Pairing Interaction in URhGe: Comparison with UCoGe

The field-angular dependence of Co-NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 has been measured for a 10% Co-doped single crystal of URhGe. The experiment revealed that spin fluctuations in ferromagnetic (FM) state of URhGe are robust against magnetic field below about 4 T, applied along any direction in the bc crystal plane. This is in clear contrast with the sister compound UCoGe, in which FM spin fluctuations are rapidly suppressed by a tiny applied field along the c axis. We show that such a difference in the character of the spin fluctuations is reflected in their two distinct phase diagrams for the upper critical field Hc2, providing further support to the mechanism of superconductivity mediated by spin fluctuations in these materials.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in High Magnetic Field: Application to Condensed Matter Physics

In this review, we describe the potentialities offered by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique to explore at a microscopic level new quantum states of condensed matter induced by high magnetic fields. We focus on experiments realised in resistive (up to 34~T) or hybrid (up to 45~T) magnets, which open a large access to these quantum phase transitions. After an introduction on NMR observable, we consider several topics: quantum spin systems (spin-Peierls transition, spin ladders, spin nematic phases, magnetisation plateaus and Bose-Einstein condensation of triplet excitations), the field-induced charge density wave (CDW) in high $T_c$~superconductors, and exotic superconductivity including the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconducting state and the field-induced superconductivity due to the Jaccarino-Peter mechanism.

Dynamics of Bound Magnon Pairs in the Quasi-One-Dimensional Frustrated Magnet LiCuVO_4

We report on the dynamics of the spin-1/2 quasi-one-dimensional frustrated magnet LiCuVO$\mathrm{_4}$ measured by nuclear spin relaxation in high magnetic fields 10--34 T, in which the ground state has spin-density-wave order. The spin fluctuations in the paramagnetic phase exhibit striking anisotropy with respect to the magnetic field. The transverse excitation spectrum probed by $^{51}$V nuclei has an excitation gap, which increases with field. On the other hand, the gapless longitudinal fluctuations sensed by $^7$Li nuclei grow with lowering temperature, but tend to be suppressed with increasing field. Such anisotropic spin dynamics and its field dependence agree with the theoretical predictions and are ascribed to the formation of bound magnon pairs, a remarkable consequence of the frustration between ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions.

Anomalous Spin Correlations and Mass-Generating Excitonic Instability of Interacting Weyl Fermions

Recent advances in the study of nodal Weyl fermions (WFs), quasi-relativistic massless particles, constitute a novel realm of quantum many-body phenomena. The Coulomb interaction in such systems, having a zero density of states at the Fermi level, is of particular interest, since in contrast to conventional correlated metals, its long-ranged component is unscreened. Here, through nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) measurements, we unveil the exotic spin correlations of two-dimensional WFs in an organic material, causing a divergent increase of the Korringa ratio by a factor of 1000 upon cooling, in striking contrast with conventional metallic behaviors. Combined with model calculations, we show that this divergence stems from the interaction-driven velocity renormalization that almost exclusively suppresses the zero-momentum spin fluctuations. At low temperatures, the NMR rate shows a remarkable increase, which is shown by numerical analyses to correspond to inter-node excitonic fluctuations, precursor of a transition from massless to massive quasiparticles.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Reveals Disordered Level-Crossing Physics in the Bose-Glass Regime of the Br-doped Ni(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$-4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$ Compound at a High Magnetic Field

By measuring the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) 1/T_1 relaxation rate in the Br (bond) doped DTN compound, Ni(Cl(1-x)Br_x)2-4SC(NH2)2 (DTNX), we show that the low-energy spin dynamics of its high magnetic field "Bose-glass" regime is dominated by a strong peak of spin fluctuations found at the nearly doping-independent position H* = 13.6 T. From its temperature and field dependence we conclude that this corresponds to a level crossing of the energy levels related to the doping-induced impurity states. Observation of the local NMR signal from the spin adjacent to the doped Br allowed us to fully characterize this impurity state. We have thus quantified a microscopic theoretical model that paves the way to better understanding of the Bose-glass physics in DTNX, as revealed in the related theoretical study [M. Dupont, S. Capponi, and N. Laflorencie, Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 067204 (2017), arXiv:1610.05136].

Nuclear magnetic resonance study of the magnetic-field-induced ordered phase in the NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2 compound

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of the high magnetic field (H) part of the Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) phase of the quasi-onedimensional (quasi-1D) antiferromagnetic quantum spin-chain compound NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2 (DTN) was performed. We precisely determined the phase boundary, Tc(H), down to 40 mK; the critical boson density, n_c(Tc); and the absolute value of the BEC order parameter S_perp at very low temperature (T = 0.12 K). All results are accurately reproduced by numerical quantum Monte Carlo simulations of a realistic three-dimensional (3D) model Hamiltonian. Approximate analytical predictions based on the 1D Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid description are found to be precise for Tc(H), but less so for S_perp(H), which is more sensitive to the strength of 3D couplings, in particular close to the critical field. A mean-field treatment, based on the Hartree-Fock-Popov description, is found to be valid only up to n_c = 4% (T < 0.3 K), while for higher n_c boson interactions appear to modify the density of states.

Observation of an anisotropic Dirac cone reshaping and ferrimagnetic spin polarization in an organic conductor

The Coulomb interaction among massless Dirac fermions in graphene is unscreened around the isotropic Dirac points, causing a logarithmic velocity renormalization and a cone reshaping. In less symmetric Dirac materials possessing anisotropic cones with tilted axes, the Coulomb interaction can provide still more exotic phenomena which have not been experimentally unveiled yet. Here, using site-selective nuclear magnetic resonance, we find a non-uniform cone reshaping accompanied by a bandwidth reduction and an emergent ferrimagnetism in tilted Dirac cones that appear on the verge of charge ordering in an organic compound. Our theoretical analyses based on the renormalization-group approach and the Hubbard model show that these observations are the direct consequences of the long-range and short-range parts of the Coulomb interaction, respectively. The cone reshaping and the bandwidth renormalization, as well as the novel magnetism revealed here, can be ubiquitous and vital for many Dirac materials.

Emergence of Orbital Nematicity in the Tetragonal Phase of BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

We report on $^{75}$As-NMR measurements in single crystalline BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.96}$P$_{0.04}$)$_{2}$ for magnetic fields parallel to the orthorhombic $[110]_{\rm o}$ and $[100]_{\rm o}$ directions above the structural transition temperature $T_{\rm S}\simeq121$ K. A large difference in the linewidth between the two field directions reveals in-plane anisotropy of the electric field gradient, even in the tetragonal phase. This provides microscopic evidence of population imbalance between As-$4p_{x}$ and $4p_{y}$ orbitals, which reaches $|n_x-n_y|/|n_x+n_y| \sim 15$\% at $T\rightarrow T_{\rm S}$ and is a natural consequence of the orbital ordering of Fe-3$d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ electrons. Surprisingly, this orbital polarization is found to be already static near room temperature, suggesting that it arises from the pinning of anisotropic orbital fluctuations by disorder. The effect is found to be stronger below $\sim 160$ K, which coincides with the appearance of nematicity in previous torque and photoemission measurements. These results impose strong constraints on microscopic models of the nematic state.

Incomplete devil's staircase in the magnetization curve of SrCu2(BO3)2

We report on NMR and torque measurements on the frustrated quasi-two-dimensional spin-dimer system SrCu2(BO3)2 in magnetic fields up to 34 T that reveal a sequence of magnetization plateaus at 1/8, 2/15, 1/6, and 1/4 of the saturation and two incommensurate phases below and above the 1/6 plateau. The magnetic structures determined by NMR involve a stripe order of triplets in all plateaus, suggesting that the incommensurate phases originate from proliferation of domain walls. We propose that the magnetization process of SrCu2(BO3)2 is best described as an incomplete devil's staircase.

High-field Phase Diagram and Spin Structure of Volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2/2H2O

We report results of 51V NMR experiments on a high-quality powder sample of volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2/2H2O, a spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a distorted kagome lattice. Following the previous experiments in magnetic fields $B$ below 12 T, the NMR measurements have been extended to higher fields up to 31 T. In addition to the two already known ordered phases (phases I and II), we found a new high-field phase (phase III) above 25 T, at which a second magnetization step has been observed. The transition from the paramagnetic phase to the antiferromagnetic phase III occurs at 26 K, which is much higher than the transition temperatures from the paramagnetic to the lower field phases I (B < 4.5 T) and II (4.5 < B < 25 T). At low temperatures, two types of the V sites are observed with different relaxation rates and line shapes in phase III as well as in phase II. Our results indicate that both phases II and III exhibit a heterogeneous spin state consisting of two spatially alternating Cu spin systems, one of which exhibits anomalous spin fluctuations contrasting with the other showing a conventional static order. The magnetization of the latter system exhibits a sudden increase upon entering into phase III, resulting in the second magnetization step at 26 T.We discuss the possible spin structure in phase III.

Statics and dynamics of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladders in a magnetic field

We investigate weakly coupled spin-1/2 ladders in a magnetic field. The work is motivated by recent experiments on the compound (C5H12N)2CuBr4 (BPCB). We use a combination of numerical and analytical methods, in particular the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, to explore the phase diagram and the excitation spectra of such a system. We give detailed results on the temperature dependence of the magnetization and the specific heat, and the magnetic field dependence of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation rate of single ladders. For coupled ladders, treating the weak interladder coupling within a mean-field or quantum Monte Carlo approach, we compute the transition temperature of triplet condensation and its corresponding antiferromagnetic order parameter. Existing experimental measurements are discussed and compared to our theoretical results. Furthermore we compute, using time dependent DMRG, the dynamical correlations of a single spin ladder. Our results allow to directly describe the inelastic neutron scattering cross section up to high energies. We focus on the evolution of the spectra with the magnetic field and compare their behavior for different couplings. The characteristic features of the spectra are interpreted using different analytical approaches such as the mapping onto a spin chain, a Luttinger liquid (LL) or onto a t-J model. For values of parameters for which such measurements exist, we compare our results to inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the compound BPCB and find excellent agreement. We make additional predictions for the high energy part of the spectrum that are potentially testable in future experiments.

NMR and NQR study of the tetrahedral frustrated quantum spin system Cu2Te2O5Br2 in its paramagnetic phase

The quantum antiferromagnet Cu2Te2O5Br2 was investigated by NMR and NQR. The 125Te NMR investigation showed that there is a magnetic transition around 10.5K at 9T, in agreement with previous studies. From the divergence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate, we ruled out the possibility that the transition could be governed by a one-dimensional divergence of the spin-spin correlation function. The observed anisotropy of the 125Te shift was shown to be due to a spin polarization of the 5s2 "E" doublet of the [TeO3E] tetrahedra, highlighting the importance of tellurium in the exchange paths. In the paramagnetic state, Br NQR and NMR measurements led to the determination of the Br hyperfine coupling and the electric field gradient tensor, and to the the spin polarization of Br p orbitals. The results demonstrate the crucial role of bromine in the interaction paths between Cu spins.
