From Lagrangians to Events: Computer Tutorial at the MC4BSM-2012 Workshop

This is a written account of the computer tutorial offered at the Sixth MC4BSM workshop at Cornell University, March 22-24, 2012. The tools covered during the tutorial include: FeynRules, LanHEP, MadGraph, CalcHEP, Pythia 8, Herwig++, and Sherpa. In the tutorial, we specify a simple extension of the Standard Model, at the level of a Lagrangian. The software tools are then used to automatically generate a set of Feynman rules, compute the invariant matrix element for a sample process, and generate both parton-level and fully hadronized/showered Monte Carlo event samples. The tutorial is designed to be self-paced, and detailed instructions for all steps are included in this write-up. Installation instructions for each tool on a variety of popular platforms are also provided.

NNLO phase space master integrals for two-to-one inclusive cross sections in dimensional regularization

We evaluate all phase space master integrals which are required for the total cross section of generic 2 -> 1 processes at NNLO as a series expansion in the dimensional regulator epsilon. Away from the limit of threshold production, our expansion includes one order higher than what has been available in the literature. At threshold, we provide expressions which are valid to all orders in terms of Gamma functions and hypergeometric functions. These results are a necessary ingredient for the renormalization and mass factorization of singularities in 2 -> 1 inclusive cross sections at NNNLO in QCD.

UFO - The Universal FeynRules Output

We present a new model format for automatized matrix-element generators, the so- called Universal FeynRules Output (UFO). The format is universal in the sense that it features compatibility with more than one single generator and is designed to be flexible, modular and agnostic of any assumption such as the number of particles or the color and Lorentz structures appearing in the interaction vertices. Unlike other model formats where text files need to be parsed, the information on the model is encoded into a Python module that can easily be linked to other computer codes. We then describe an interface for the Mathematica package FeynRules that allows for an automatic output of models in the UFO format.

Introducing an interface between WHIZARD and FeynRules

While Monte Carlo event generators like WHIZARD have become indispensable tools in studying the impact of new physics on collider observables over the last decades, the implementation of new models in such packages has remained a rather awkward and error-prone process. Recently, the FeynRules package was introduced which greatly simplifies this process by providing a single unified model format from which model implementations for many different Monte Carlo codes can be derived automatically. In this note, we present an interface which extends FeynRules to provide this functionality also for the WHIZARD package, thus making WHIZARD's strengths and performance easily available to model builders.

Hopf algebras, coproducts and symbols: an application to Higgs boson amplitudes

We show how the Hopf algebra structure of multiple polylogarithms can be used to simplify complicated expressions for multi-loop amplitudes in perturbative quantum field theory and we argue that, unlike the recently popularized symbol-based approach, the coproduct incorporates information about the zeta values. We illustrate our approach by rewriting the two-loop helicity amplitudes for a Higgs boson plus three gluons in a simplified and compact form involving only classical polylogarithms.

Infrared singularities and the high-energy limit

We review recent results on the high-energy limit of gauge amplitudes, which can be derived from the universal properties of their infrared singularities. Using the dipole formula, a compact ansatz for infrared singularities of massless gauge amplitudes, and taking the high-energy limit, we provide a simple expression for the soft factor of a generic high-energy amplitude, valid to leading power in $t/s$ and to all logarithmic orders. This gives a direct and general proof of leading-logarithmic Reggeization for infrared divergent contributions to the amplitude, and it shows how Reggeization breaks down at NNLL level. We further show how the dipole formula constrains the high-energy limit of multi-particle amplitudes in multi-Regge kinematics, and how, on the other hand, Regge theory constrains possible corrections to the dipole formula.

The infrared structure of gauge theory amplitudes in the high-energy limit

We develop an approach to the high-energy limit of gauge theories based on the universal properties of their infrared singularities. Our main tool is the dipole formula, a compact ansatz for the all-order infrared singularity structure of scattering amplitudes of massless partons. By taking the high-energy limit, we show that the dipole formula implies Reggeization of infrared-singular contributions to the amplitude, at leading logarithmic accuracy, for the exchange of arbitrary color representations in the cross channel. We observe that the real part of the amplitude Reggeizes also at next-to-leading logarithmic order, and we compute the singular part of the two-loop Regge trajectory, which is universally expressed in terms of the cusp anomalous dimension. Our approach provides tools to study the high-energy limit beyond the boundaries of Regge factorization: thus we show that Reggeization generically breaks down at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, and provide a general expression for the leading Reggeization-breaking operator. Our approach applies to multiparticle amplitudes in multi-Regge kinematics, and it also implies new constraints on possible corrections to the dipole formula, based on the Regge limit.

From polygons and symbols to polylogarithmic functions

We present a review of the symbol map, a mathematical tool that can be useful in simplifying expressions among multiple polylogarithms, and recall its main properties. A recipe is given for how to obtain the symbol of a multiple polylogarithm in terms of the combinatorial properties of an associated rooted decorated polygon. We also outline a systematic approach to constructing a function corresponding to a given symbol, and illustrate it in the particular case of harmonic polylogarithms up to weight four. Furthermore, part of the ambiguity of this process is highlighted by exhibiting a family of non-trivial elements in the kernel of the symbol map for arbitrary weight.

An infrared approach to Reggeization

We present a new approach to Reggeization of gauge amplitudes based on the universal properties of their infrared singularities. Using the "dipole formula", a compact ansatz for all infrared singularities of massless amplitudes, we study Reggeization of singular contributions to high-energy amplitudes for arbitrary color representations, and any logarithmic accuracy. We derive leading-logarithmic Reggeization for general cross-channel color exchanges, and we show that Reggeization breaks down for the imaginary part of the amplitude at next-to-leading logarithms and for the real part at next-to-next-to-leading logarithms. Our formalism applies to multiparticle amplitudes in multi-Regge kinematics, and constrains possible corrections to the dipole formula starting at three loops.

CHAPLIN - Complex Harmonic Polylogarithms in Fortran

We present a new Fortran library to evaluate all harmonic polylogarithms up to weight four numerically for any complex argument. The algorithm is based on a reduction of harmonic polylogarithms up to weight four to a minimal set of basis functions that are computed numerically using series expansions allowing for fast and reliable numerical results.

A superspace module for the FeynRules package

We describe an additional module for the Mathematica package FeynRules that allows for an easy building of any N=1 supersymmetric quantum field theory, directly in superspace. After the superfield content of a specific model has been implemented, the user can study the properties of the model, such as the supersymmetric transformation laws of the associated Lagrangian, directly in Mathematica. While the model dependent parts of the latter, i.e., the soft supersymmetry-breaking Lagrangian and the superpotential, have to be provided by the user, the model independent pieces, such as the gauge interaction terms, are derived automatically. Using the strengths of the Feynrules program, it is then possible to derive all the Feynman rules associated to the model and implement them in all the Feynman diagram calculators interfaced to FeynRules in a straightforward way.

The one-loop six-dimensional hexagon integral with three massive corners

We compute the six-dimensional hexagon integral with three non-adjacent external masses analytically. After a simple rescaling, it is given by a function of six dual conformally invariant cross-ratios. The result can be expressed as a sum of 24 terms involving only one basic function, which is a simple linear combination of logarithms, dilogarithms, and trilogarithms of uniform degree three transcendentality. Our method uses differential equations to determine the symbol of the function, and an algorithm to reconstruct the latter from its symbol. It is known that six-dimensional hexagon integrals are closely related to scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory, and we therefore expect our result to be helpful for understanding the structure of scattering amplitudes in this theory, in particular at two loops.

The massless hexagon integral in D = 6 dimensions

We evaluate the massless one-loop hexagon integral in six dimensions. The result is given in terms of standard polylogarithms of uniform transcendental weight three, its functional form resembling the one of the remainder function of the two-loop hexagon Wilson loop in four dimensions.

A Two-Loop Octagon Wilson Loop in N = 4 SYM

In the planar N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at weak coupling, we perform the first analytic computation of a two-loop eight-edged Wilson loop embedded into the boundary of AdS3. Its remainder function is given as a function of uniform transcendental weight four in terms of a constant plus a product of four logarithms. We compare to the strong-coupling result, and test a conjecture on the universality of the remainder function proposed in the literature.

The Two-Loop Hexagon Wilson Loop in N = 4 SYM

In the planar N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, the conformal symmetry constrains multi-loop n-edged Wilson loops to be given in terms of the one-loop n-edged Wilson loop, augmented, for n greater than 6, by a function of conformally invariant cross ratios. That function is termed the remainder function. In a recent paper, we have displayed the first analytic computation of the two-loop six-edged Wilson loop, and thus of the corresponding remainder function. Although the calculation was performed in the quasi-multi-Regge kinematics of a pair along the ladder, the Regge exactness of the six-edged Wilson loop in those kinematics entails that the result is the same as in general kinematics. We show in detail how the most difficult of the integrals is computed, which contribute to the six-edged Wilson loop. Finally, the remainder function is given as a function of uniform transcendental weight four in terms of Goncharov polylogarithms. We consider also some asymptotic values of the remainder function, and the value when all the cross ratios are equal.

An Analytic Result for the Two-Loop Hexagon Wilson Loop in N = 4 SYM

In the planar N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, the conformal symmetry constrains multi-loop n-edged Wilson loops to be basically given in terms of the one-loop n-edged Wilson loop, augmented, for n greater than 6, by a function of conformally invariant cross ratios. We identify a class of kinematics for which the Wilson loop exhibits exact Regge factorisation and which leave invariant the analytic form of the multi-loop n-edged Wilson loop. In those kinematics, the analytic result for the Wilson loop is the same as in general kinematics, although the computation is remarkably simplified with respect to general kinematics. Using the simplest of those kinematics, we have performed the first analytic computation of the two-loop six-edged Wilson loop in general kinematics.

A comprehensive approach to new physics simulations

We describe a framework to develop, implement and validate any perturbative Lagrangian-based particle physics model for further theoretical, phenomenological and experimental studies. The starting point is FeynRules, a Mathematica package that allows to generate Feynman rules for any Lagrangian and then, through dedicated interfaces, automatically pass the corresponding relevant information to any supported Monte Carlo event generator. We prove the power, robustness and flexibility of this approach by presenting a few examples of new physics models (the Hidden Abelian Higgs Model, the general Two-Higgs-Doublet Model, the most general Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, the Minimal Higgsless Model, Universal and Large Extra Dimensions, and QCD-inspired effective Lagrangians) and their implementation/validation in FeynArts/FormCalc, CalcHep, MadGraph/MadEvent, and Sherpa.
